In the interest of moving things forward, I'm going to push on here. I still need to know where some of you are going, though, so go ahead and get back to me on that either in or out of thread if you can. Also, if anyone's making any preparations before heading out, purchasing stuff or anything, IM or PM me about it, and if you want you can also make a post about it but that's optional; Seethe and Spleen especially, since Rosalyn and Theller were talking about buying healing potions just now.

Infinite Staircase

When ready, the gathered Planewalkers head out onto the stairs. The paths to the two cities - Automata for one, and an Indep village in the sixth ring for the other - follow the same course for the first three hours of travel, and for the first time the group of eight all set out together, if temporarily. Or rather, nine, as on this trip Florence has chosen to join them, walking alongside Shawn and keeping a close eye on her. She looks to have scantly prepared for this trip, with nothing but a pack of food and water with her. She doesn't seem to even carry a weapon or wear armor of any sort, though when asked, she hardly seems concerned about the matter.

Also joining the nine of them, of course, are Aaron and Nora, who seem to be reacting wholly differently to the large, slightly-loud group as they head up the endless ascent. Nora barely notices it, weaving between legs as if they weren't there, and showing a special curiosity in Shawn. Aaron, however, doesn't seem to care much at all for being in such a crowded environment, his feathers fairly rankled by the whole thing. Most of his time is spent grooming, with the occasional nervous glance thrown to the others; especially Magpie, perhaps not unexpectedly.

Lorraine:
Spoiler:
Everyone is loud and together and Aaron does not like this! He might get knocked off! And why does that metal man smell like a tree anyway?!

Kelne:
Spoiler:
Why is that girl a cat now? She smells funny. Why aren't you a cat too? Nora would like you to be a cat now too.

The construct has packed very little for its journey; carrying with it only its weapons, shield and the bag of tools it carries around at all times. It has, however, offered to help carry anything else, and if the offer has been taken up upon it is carrying that as well.

The green in its eyes have been fairly dull for most of the journey, sparking up only whenever a discussion has been going, or it has noticed a particularily interesting piece of scenery. If it is aware of Aaron's discomfort, it does not show it, although Magpie has been devoting some attention to Nora, trying somewhat clumsily to catch the attention of the cat as they have walked.

Not pushing on just yet, but now that everyone's decided, for all your reference here's where everyone's headed:

Theller smiled at the cat girl, not having heard that this is Shawn's new form. "I don't believe we've meet. My name is Theller of Homespire."
"Tell you what, Leto, I won't fight with you. Zeus' wives are pretty tough customers. You have my permission to boast openly that you have beaten the daylights out of me."

Rosalyn was familiar enough with Shawn after travelling with her on the last two excursions that the new cat features didn't stop her from recognizing the girl. They were a surprise, though. But then again, she did remember Shawn changing form once before, on the steam ship back when they were looking for the Tower of Ice.

"I think you may have met her before," Rosalyn said to Theller, then looked Shawn over one more time. "This is new, though."

Theller looked confused. "I think I would have remembered. I've got a good memory for faces."

Other group in the other thread.

Infinite Staircase

At the fork in the stairs, Asp, Zant, Lorraine, Trivale, and Magpie leave their companions, whose footsteps and conversation soon fade into the ever-present fog. Two hours later, the five reach their doorway, a heavy iron door that shrieks on its hinges as they pull it open. As they pass through, they emerge onto a hall of similar doors, some open and some not. The door swings shut behind them once they all pass through, and as they peek into the adjoining rooms, they soon determine that they've found themselves in a storage center, a place where people can keep their valuables and important documents under lock and key. A zenythri and dwarf in light-blue plate stand watch at the stairs at the far end, while a small mass of people mill up and down the hall and its tributaries, bringing or retrieving gems, pieces of art, or even simply documents under guard to be secured. Many of these sorts wear identical dress - a reddish-grey robe tied with a white sash - but enough don't to suggest this certainly isn't a city-wide requirement. Each door is numbered, with multiple heavy locks and runic inscriptions that suggest great dangers to those that would try breaking into one of these vaults.

Automata

Upstairs and out the simple, well-guarded foyer, they reach the city proper. The building opens right onto the street, which if they were to bother measuring it they would find was precisely 10 feet wide. Mostly humans and dwarves walk the streets here, about half wearing the robes seen below, though some more zenythri and what looks to be a baatezu or two can be spotted as well; overhead, a winged zelekhut flies to its destination, its face intent as always.

Next door to them, the Red Eagle mercenary troupe advertises their skills from a building nearly identical to the one they've just exited. Up and down the street, more near-identical buildings offering various services fill both sides of the thruway, some with more stories than others, but all made of the same reddish-grey stone. Across the street, a group of florists and apothecaries stand. Down the street to their left, a few taverns and restaurants advertise their products without standing out too much from one another. Indeed, micro-organization seems the byword here in Automata, though there's not much sign of macro-.

With nothing but a building and a time still some hours in the future to indicate their meeting place, the party has ample time to explore this city - the most entertaining part of finding a new spot for some. It doesn't take long to track down their future meeting place, a general store called "Mona's Provisions"; knowing where and when they need to meet up tonight, they're free to split up or stay together as they'd like.

Here's a map of Automata to give you an idea what it looks like. The green dot is where the vault building is, and the red dot is where you're to meet. The entire city seems to be arranged in blocks of similar-purpose buildings, though there's no rhyme or reason what blocks are next to one another. There are more than three buildings per block, of course; as a whole, it's a city of about 10,000 people.

It may take a short while for anyone to realise it, but they already seem to have lost Asp. All those fascinating, heavily secured doors (and the implied fascinating stuff behind them) were just too much.

For the moment, Asp is still deciphering the runes, trying to determine just what kind of horrible things they portend. But his fingers are already twitching in the direction of his lockpicks. That constant stream of people causes him to hesitate as the prospect of Certain Doom does not. This is one of those situations where people are bound to be unreasonable about it all.

Automata - Vault

Asp can tell they're definitely spell runes of some sort, though unfortunately for him this is a field his research hasn't yet brought him to. He could name any number of things they could potentially be - from wizard locks to summoning triggers to power words - but the details of geometric arcanology are at the moment beyond his grasp.

Sorry, but Asp whiffed his K:Arcana check on this one.

Magpie had been... well, delighted would have been the wrong choice of words (the construct couldn't exactly show emotions)...

Magpie had seemed pleased with the fact that Nora was accompanying its group to Automata, and although the cat hadn't seemed particularily interested in being carried by the warforged, it had none the less kept its green eyes semi-focused on the fuzzy little critter as they had said goodbye to those heading elsewhere and stepped onto the stairs leading to the planes of Law.

Well there, it had remained quiet, looking around and taking in its first impression of the city. It should fit in here, and it did feel a strange sense of belonging, but it also disliked the way the buildings were close to identical in design... it reminded it not a little of...

It turned suddenly and looked around, informing the others with a calm tone: "We have lost Asp."

After careful consideration, Asp concludes that it's just not going to happen. It's a shame, but it would only lead to shouting, recriminations, and being thrown out the door and back onto the stairway. Not that this would be all that bad, but then he wouldn't be able to help the others, and it's certain that they'd only get into trouble without him.

With a faint sigh, and mentally adding the storeroom to his list of things to investigate one day, Asp turns and makes for the exit. Hopefully there'll be some equally interesting stuff elsewhere in town, though he somewhat doubts it.

Zant glanced around, Magpie's words snapping him out of whatever thoughts he was entertaining.

"That does appear to be the case. Is Asp prone to wondering off on his own?" he asked Lorraine, remembering that she had journeyed with the short one before.

Lorraine shook her head.

"I haven't known him long enough to say. I only met up with him and Shawn at the end of their last mission, and there was about a week where I mostly kept to myself during that time, doing research."

One corner of her mouth turned up and she cast here eyes about for Asp. They'd literally been here less than ten minutes. He couldn't have gotten far at all. Logic dictated that he would be inside still, if anywhere. That said, she poked her head back into the door of the building they'd just left.

"Asp?"

Automata

When she peeks her head in, Lorraine can just spot a disappointed Asp coming up the stairs. Outside the vault-like building, the kender's bemused familiar sits just on the edge of Magpie's reach, almost daring the warforged to reach for her again. And while this all is happening, a human in plate, the color of which is the constantly reappearing reddish-grey, walks up to them, looking them over with a glitter in her hazel eyes. She's a dark-skinned and dark-haired woman of indeterminate age; perhaps 30, perhaps 50. After a quick once-over she speaks up, her voice a fairly forced monotone. "New arrivals, yes? Your first time in the city?"

"Oh yes," Asp pipes up, abruptly cheerful again at the prospect of a welcoming committee, however dour, "Can you tell us about the sights?" A greater contrast in tones of voice is difficult to imagine.

Magpie looms over the cat, the calm glow in its eyes not betraying anything of its intention, the construct remaining completely still as it looks down on the little creature. There is no sign of alertness, no slight twitching in muscles as it prepares to move...

In all sense, a statue... until it suddenly jerks to life to take a step towards the sitting familiar, hand reaching out and.

The appearance of the armored woman seem to actually surprise the construct as it stops mid-movement, head swivelling to look at her, eyes flaring up for a second before it puts down its raised foot, turning its body and putting both hands behind its back, suddenly standing at attention.

"I have... not been here before."

Ah ha, there he is. Well, he didn't seem to have gotten them into trouble yet, there really hadn't been enough time for that she didn't think. This woman must be here for other reasons.

"I think that will largely be the case with most of us, yes."

She paused, a bit awkwardly. This wasn't actually who they wanted to meet, but she didn't want to be rude and rush away...

"Lovely city."

Automata

"If you wish to know what Automata has to offer, I would suggest you visit the tout square, sir," she says to Asp, "but I am afraid that is not why I've approached you. I see you lack travelers' passes, which is a fineable offense here. As you've just arrived, you do have a 24 hour grace period, but you will need to file for your passes soon. If one of you wishes, I can show that person to the town office, where they can take care of this for all of you. It should be done well before your grace period has elapsed. There is information to be taken, but the process is fairly easy."

"Will one of you be joining me? Or is your stay to be less than a day? If so, the requirement is waived, for the convenience of travelers of course."

Magpie looked at Lorraine and then seemed to take a sweep of the whole scenerey around them before adding in its mechanical voice: "I have little interest in this city, it is disturbing. Shall I attend to these matters?"

Asp makes a face at the mention of paperwork. Studying in order to further his understanding of magic is one thing, the filling out of pointless forms is quite another. Paperwork, he is convinced, is something willingly contemplated only by the terminally boring.

"So, where to, then?" Asp asks, looking about, "It is pretty orderly, isn't it? Kind of reminds me of Palanthas. I wonder if there's an evil tower in the middle of town..."

Lorraine convinced herself Asp was joking, and just smiled. But, he had a valid question.

"We're going to the meeting place on the other side of town. We'll meet with our client, and wait for Magpie to make his way over from there."

It seemed superfluous to ask if everyone was ready, seeing as making ready was something that had happened, or should have, back at the Guild, Lorraine simply lead the way. So far, so good.

Magpie looked to Zant and replied, "I will do this task and be with you all shortly."

The behaviour of Magpie, for those who had met it a few times, seemed, if possible, more mechanic and strained than before. Much of the nuance of its speech seemed to go missing, replaced instead with the choppy, syllabic vocality it had originally had.

Some sad news, I'm afraid Shaun will be dropping out of the game. For sake of convenience, I'm going to retcon that he didn't go along with Lorraine after all, since I can't see a good reason he'd come only to leave at this point. And of course, he's always welcome back in the future.

Outlands - Automata

Lorraine leads the way on the search for their meeting spot, but it's Zant that first spies the general store block. Mona's Provisions stands right in the middle, door open and welcoming. Inside, the walls and free-standing shelves are lined with rations, fruits and vegetables, and dry goods from across the planes and all arranged by plane of origin, from Abyssal dried eyewing and Acheronian military packs, to salted herring from Water and einheriar provisions from Ysgard. One wall's filled with skins of the well-known common beverages from across the Multiverse, both alcoholic and non-. Nothing that would be especially hard to come by, but having it all in one place is a definite sight to behold.

At the far end, a halfling stands behind a counter, waving to the party as they enter and grinning with delight. "Well, welcome to my humble store, friends. I'd be Mona. Pleasure to see travelers stop in. I hope you find what you're looking for here."

Automata - Mona's Provisions

While Zant focuses on the variety of merchandise, Asp strikes up a conversation with Mona. "Oh, it's easier than you might think! Most of it keeps pretty well so I don't have to rotate often. And when I run low, I just send out an order for more. The hard part was getting it together in the first place, but now that it's here, folks like you can sample foods from all about the planes. Anything in particular that's drawing your attention?"

"Well, all sorts of things look interesting," Asp says, "I'm not sure I'd want to eat some of them, but they definitely look interesting. Say, is this the stuff from Mechanus?" he asks, spotting the beef cubes, "They really like square stuff, don't they?"

Zant had spent a while examining the herring, attempting to gauge its freshness. Something else had caught his eye, though.

"How does one package and sell the essence of thought?" he wondered aloud.

The essence of stray thoughts. It was an intriguing name, and the lady had an intriguing story behind how it was gathered. On the one hand, she was hesitant to take it and simply imbibe; So many questions she couldn't answer about it easily. At the same time, curiosity compelled her to try it anyway. On top of it all, the shop lady insisted that it wasn't dangerous... What to do?

Well, she could always buy two and examine the second portion later on. Yes, that should be just fine. She could worry about the possibly ethics of drinking thoughts later, when she knew more about it and what it really was.

"I'll take two, please."
