Which doesn't mean much if people can't get into it because they don't know where to go or there isn't room left. In retrospect, with a capacity of 16 people and only 8 people already on the network, that shouldn't be a problem yet.

But we still really kind of need people's AIM names and suchlike to send them access information. Unless you want to open up the login and pasword information to anyone who browses the forum.

Brian is FAR TOO FUCKING GOOD AT THIS GAME.

Eventually we will have to stop him.

BUT HOW?

I'd like to arrange some kind of team game, with teams to be determined depending on interested participants. Who's in?

I was going to say that I had lost my original StarCraft CD, but it would appear that that issue has been addressed. Neat!

Ok: I'm more than sure that my sister's computer was a source of viral infection now than I was before. She also doesn't have a firewall anymore, and that computer is still technically connected to Hamachi. I can, of course, uninstall it but that means that the network I made on there goes away. I don't mean to do that right at this moment, since some people might like to play some before I do it.

Reason for this post: Would people like me to run a new network on my personal computer, which is mroe secure, or would someone else like to host it? I want to know what folks are comfortable with.

I'd suggest you host it using a different computer as the computer that sets it up. However, I think I'm missing something. Hamachi's servers aren't actually hosted by your computer locally, are they? I was under the impression that the "host" was just a dummy router service that assigned IP addresses unlikely to interfere with existing networks--so, for example, Spleen's Hamachi is connectable even if Spleen's computer is not on.

In which case it makes absolutely no difference who the "host" is, because no one is actually "hosting" anything.

The "host" has the power to destroy the network, and evict members at their discretion. At the moment, that host is my sister. Unless she uninstalls Hamachi at some point. Anyway. That account also can't leave the server. It has to delete it or stay. So it would effectively reduce our maximum size (16) by 1 (15!). I'm seeing more and more people interested in this, so I thought it should atleast be brought up.

Someone could also break down and pay for the program, but somehow I doubt that. We could always pool some money for it!

Hey, also: I'd love to participate in a big team game, as long as it's not as laggy as what we've experienced today.

EDIT: Teams should be randomized.

There're two ways to go about figuring out teams.

One is to assign people based on relative play skill so that in theory the "skill sums" of each team are as close as possible. The other is complete random selection, as Spleen mentioned.

Depending on who and how many people, we can choose one method or the other.

Here is my computer illiterate question: can virii spread over Hamachi? I don't think I can afford to get a virus on this computer. I'm not sure I'd be able to System Restore it without some kind set of backup disks it's been wanting me to make and which I have no intention of making.

Otherwise, I'd be interested in a team game if it falls into my schedule and if I ever get around to getting a Hamachi account.

And allow me my (only?) Slightly Snarky Comment of the day when I say this:

If it is on the internet, it can be used to spread virii. This is not just for Hamachii, but a general rule of, you know, connecting. But yeah, we're trying to avoid getting Viruses while playing with Hamachii here.

Also: YAY! I get to post in this thread.... with ACTUAL CONTENT. Take THAT, lack of Starcraft!

Snarky comment the second: The plural of virus is "viruses." The plural of the Latin word virus, meaning "toxin, poison," would in fact be viri; it would only be virii if it were the word "virius."

And the word viri is plural for the word vir, or "man." Virus being a neuter noun, it is not likely that it would be pluralized "viri."

But if it's neuter that makes the plural vira....like data.

Also: What I should have asked was, would it be more likely for me to contract a virus by playing Starcraft over Hamachii than over Battlenet?

Also the second: co cor dcor dcore rdcore ardcore hardcor hardco hardc ardco rdco dco hardcore I FOUND A SECRET WORD!!!

.... I have no idea! I think the answer is to trust that we've reached a point where we won't virus one another to death!

As it is, we're currently using BAttle.net, since the people who have been willing to get on and take part have all been capalbe of using battle.net. So, the better question is which is more convenient for you? BNet or Hamachi?

Vires, maybe? I forgot how to do this after Latin I.

No it wouldn't. The latin word "virus" is a plural noun already, though not the plural of a singluar noun. I can't remember the term, but it's a word that's only ever used in plural to refer to many countless items in a group.

Edit: I could be mixing this up with something else, come to think of it, but I believe this is correct.

I'm not really worried about us virusing each other intentionally, but what I would worry about is a virus spreading across the network on its own. Of course, I guess that would require a virus that's specifically designed to spread across the network on its own and I would expect Battlenet to be a more likely target of such a virus. But then again, I don't know the first thing about viruses anyway. I don't think I'm going to worry about it, though, if it hasn't become an issue for Hamachi users already.

Battlenet's more convenient for me, but if we go with Hamachi I'd probably be willing to get an account for it.

We tend to switch back and forth as necesary... So! It will depend on if we have someone with us that can't do BNet. Anyway, IM me some time and I'll tell you how to access the Hamachi server. :o

It is my experience that Battle.net is very very reliable and secure. Blizzard are usually quite good at stamping out that sort of thing.

Update: James has de-virused his computer. He gets a good ping now and doesn't lag Starcraft. Yay! Idran got an ISO from BW. While he won't be playying with us any time soon, we might hopefully wrangle him into playying with us one day? Who knows. For those of you who don't know... BW has started playying! Hurrah!

... Still waiting to hear from Seethe, or Glu.
