What???

That's awefully strange. Although Sephiroth's English voice is great. Cloud's too. But seriously, why would anyone think dialogue like that is a good idea? <p><div style="text-align:center">

Well, for a start, the guy who's saying "You Meany" is also the guy who keeps on crying at the drop of a hat and is in fact a bit (actually a lot) of an idiot and like a Big Child. You watch the Japanese version and he comes off in the same way.

So the whole "You Meany" isn't that much out of place despite everyone frothing at the mouth about it. <p><div style="text-align:center"> </div>

Somehow, I knew that was going to be the English version of "zuru zuru" before I even clicked on it.

It... makes more sense than that "drifting, drifting," thing everyone seems to prefer. At least dilly dallying is sort of like dragging. By this, Tifa means that Cloud is complacently staying in the same place emotionally, which is just like saying that he's dragging emotional baggage with him. "Drifting" would just mean that he's wandering aimlessly, but that's not really so close to what Tifa meant by "zuru zuru."

Oh, I know that, Seethe, and I agree that "drifting" isn't a good choice for translating that line. But you can't tell me that a piece of apparant baby talk that if you didn't know the Japanese script you wouldn't even understand what it was supposed to mean is a good choice for that scene. (And I'm not accepting the excuse that Reno explains what it means just after the fact, it still doesn't fit the scene.)

And I had forgotten about that about him, actually, Cho, that's a good point. Though I thought it was just amusing, myself, I wasn't frothing at the mouth at that part.

My own opinions: Aeris's VA is listless and unemotional, Sephiroth's VA is using too much of a conversational tone, and the rest aren't bad. And none of this really matters, anyway, because who's going to be watching AC for the plot? <p><hr />

I gotta admit, I didn't. That's what Last Order was for.

The fight scenes were pretty neat, but a lot of them were so fast and extreme that it made them hard to follow on my tiny monitor.

Yes, please join us for the next countless FF7 spin-off titles in our attempt to milk the title for every last buck. With every plothole we close, we will open a new plothole, insuring the place for yet another spin-off and thus, more cash.

Also: lol subjective translation <p><hr />

Dan: Yeah, you've changed a lot too, into an old man! I went to see the devil, now it's your turn!
Curtis: Oh, my pupil, so tenacious of life, guess I have to kill you again.
Dan: Shut up, before you run out of breath!
Curtis: I got rid of those smiles, there's no one left to disturb our game. Just you, and me.
Dan: Sounds fair, 'cuz I hate holding back, even for an old fart like yourself.
Curtis: Talk all you want, I won't need six bullets for you.
Dan: Or four for you.</span>

I have to agree on Aeris' VA. Although personally I always thought that Sephi sounded mentally like that anyway. He's not the type of guy who has to raise his voice for anything, and that's part of what's mildly creepy about him. He just doesn't SOUND like he cares about you.

And meh. I wasn't really interested in AC before, and I'm still not TOO terribly interested now. Certainly not enough to waste money on it. <p><span style="font-size:small;"><hr />

UNCLE PHIL IS SHREDDER!!!

Postby Nick Shogun » Mon Apr 24, 2006 5:19 pm

The thing is, I'd always thought Sephiroth was one of those villains who never needed to say much, so he never spoke. I'd always imagined him as sort of a whisper. But this is fine. It could be worse, right?

I don't like Rude's voice at all. He sounds too intelligent. <p><div style="text-align:center">

...Wait... Rude didn't sound intelligent to you? Rude was the good cop when Reno was around after all. Do you not remember playing the game?

Edit: In hindsight, they were both retards. Rude was just more serious when you find him.

Anyways, from what little Aeris did say, she hardly sounded unemotional. She just had the WRONG emotion for what was going on. You know, like some guy trying to chat a girl up after Cthulhu awoke and ate her family. It's not really what the situation calls for. Albeit at the beginning of her talking she sounded like she was rather like a first year acting student at a community college who wished to act, though they'd never done anything in the theatre in their life.

Sephiroth sounded perfect, if you ask me, since he wasn't angry or spiteful in that scene, so you can't really tell how the VA took his character at all. I doubt the people who took the jobs for these are stupid... Just the directors might have been smoking too much before giving direction.

I already knew that Tifa's "zuru zuru" was going to be difficult to translate, and I already knew I was going to hate whatever retarded crap they came up with for it, but I was at least hoping that it wasn't goign to be something that incredibly stupid. Tifa's a lighthearted person, certainly, but come on. Shilly shally? That's the best they could come up with?

But that's where my complaints end. Everything else seemed to work out fairly well. Let's list them!

The "You meany" line is juvenile, yes, but then again, so is the person that spoke it. In fact, all three of those guys are sissy little mama's boys at heart.

Sephiroth doesn't sound quite bishounen enough, but I'm actually a little relieved by that. I really like the tone of his voice, though. Sephiroth rarely ever gets emotional, and tends to view just about everything around him with a sort of curious stoicism. He always struck me as a man who had absolute confidence in his abilities and his philosophy, and thus does not need to know fear, rage, or uncertainty. Most of the time he is either amused, curious, or simply preoccupied. So, why shouldn't his tone be calmly conversational?

Rude sounds fucking awesome, because he is voiced by the omnipresent Crispin Freeman, whose talent for the craft of voice acting is legend. Still, it doesn't sound quite like Rude. I mean, for one thing, he's black. Hell, I dunno, maybe he's bi-racial. I think Beau Billingslea would have been a more appropriate choice, but he's already doing Barret. Thus, I present the following theory: Since it is law that Crispin Freeman has to be in everything, and since Billingslea already had a role in Advent Children, Rude is really the only remaining character badass enough to support Freeman's voice. Cid comes close, but he's a little too salty. Rufus might have been a good fit, though...

Finally, Aeris sounds exactly like a woman who is talking to a man she cares for about important stuff. She knows him and his ways all too well, but she doesn't want to come off as... umm... well, knowing him and his ways all too well. She probably has her own ideas on how to set him straight, but she knows that it is better for him to solve his own problems. So, rather than providing him direction, she merely offers guidance, which unfortunatley means she has to hold back a tiny little bit on the mood she would probably rather convey. Even if she does sound a little emotionally distant, it is still clear that she is happy to see him. It is bittersweet, however, because it's not really "real," and their time together is so short. How would you feel, being so close and yet so far from someone that was important to you?

Or maybe I'm just overanalyzing things, and the VA just screwed up Aeris's characteristic perkiness. What do I know? <p><div style="text-align:center">Image</div></p>Edited by: [url=http://p068.ezboard.com/brpgww60462.showUserPublicProfile?gid=brainwalker>BrainWalker</A]&nbsp; Image at: 4/24/06 20:46

COW ALERT.

Postby Nick Shogun » Wed Apr 26, 2006 1:12 am

No matter; it was very good. I particularly enjoyed Vincent's voice; it had a certain 'demonic' quality to it that added to his character.

Tea-Fah? Rachel Leigh Cook? She's doing a lot of voice acting these days.

Special Features-wise, you can watch all the cinematics from FFVII the game, and a making-of documentary where they show how they layered the thing.

Also, you're correct, they're milking FFVII for all it's worth. They've got an anime movie coming out, a Nintendo DS game, and Dirge of Cerebus for PS3. Geez... that's overkill. <p><div style="text-align:center">

I still think something along the lines of "You're such a whiner" would have been a better choice. Christ. "Dilly dally" might have even worked if she didnt hurry so damn much in saying it. <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. FYI in case anyone wasn't aware, Vincent is voiced by Steve Blum, who has been the voice for every male character in every anime series ever (and also numerous video games, including Star Wars: Battlefront II).

Notable roles include (in case for some reason, again, you weren't aware) Spike Spiegel, Kazuma from s-cry-ed, Mugen from Samurai Champloo, Roger from Big O, list goes on. <p><hr /><div style="text-align:center">Image

The anime club here made a retardedly big deal about having a "special sneak preview screening" and they charged a dollar a head. This was about two weeks after it had been available from any number of fine torrent sites.

Someone stole the CD they burnt the video onto, though. It was funny and they deserved it.

The best part of FF7 is that now at my school in my group of friends, bring it up in serious conversation in any of it's forms removes the validity of the conversation. It's like when you call someone Hitler on a political forum, the conversation is officially over. It's great. :X Cause no one I've ever met can have a conversation about it withotu saying "LAWL IT SUKED" or "BEST GAEM EVAR" or anything.

IN CASE YOU ARE ALL SO CURIOUS~ the following topics are ones that may also destroy the validity of any and all conversation:

Evangelion.
Naruto.
PS3 vs Everything.

I have been known to troll saying FF7 sucks. ._. Just cause it's funny to see the reaction I get. Try it, it's rad. <p>[--------------------------------------------]

...I played FF4 and FF6 on SNES before I even owned a computer. Back when Saturday morning television was something not only to look forward to... BUT TO WATCH RELIGIOUSLY, so religiously, your parents would tell you to go back to bed!

Those were the days when I never knew a thing such as "GameFAQs" to make confusing parts less confusing...No... I HAD TO WATCH SOMEONE ELSE PLAY THE GAME FIRST. AND THINGS WERE BETTER THEN! *Shakes a cane*

If you want an Eva flaming discussion, simply go to /b/ and start a discussion. Amidst the folk casting you out for being an weaboo animu fag, the folk who hate and the folk who love Eva will slowly flood in. I recall one image of a guy in particular who scarred himself forever with an image of Rei.
