Something Dia's post doesn't mention but is nifty, it's been confirmed that VC purchases will be hardware independant; if something happens to your console, you won't need to repurchase all your VC items for your new one. <p><hr />

This all sounds too good to be true. How can Nintendo really afford to offer all of this?

Man, I'm definitely going to be hitting up that Bonk's Adventure jazz.

I wonder how 3rd party consoles are going to be priced in the Wii point structure? Perhaps they're going to go by era? So, like, Turbografix 16 games would cost 800 points. That seems fairly logical.

Also, WOO PAPER MARIO! Even though it's nowhere near as awesome as it's sequal, it's still pretty awesome. <p><div style="text-align:center">Image</div></p>

Well, Nintendo's the only company that's going to be selling their next-gen console at a profit, even if it's a razor-thin margin. That's part of it, I'm sure, Nick. <p><hr />

And we all know that the idea that moving lots of inventory at a loss still earns you a profit is a fallacy of obvious mathematical proportions. <p><hr /><div style="text-align:center">Image

Well as a meeting says that I was at:

"We never plan to make money on a console...

... That's what the third party games, the add on's, memory cards and controllers are for."

I got to see how much money they lost when the PS1 and PS2 came out, and how much they expect to lose on the PS3 when it comes out.

I can only say: BASTARDS!

I wish I could afford to lose even 1/10th of that much. <p><div style="text-align:center"> </div>

Yeah, it's just the Gilette model of sales, Brian. You sell the long-term central item at a loss, and drive up huge profit margins on the necessary additions. All of Microsoft and Sony's money is from first-party games and console accessories now.

There's really no mathematical fallacy here when you look at the whole picture, as opposed to consoles alone. <p><hr />

Oh, I'm totally familiar with the Gilette model; it's becoming more and more common for the companies that make blood glucose testing meters to give the meters away for literally nothing (they retail for $50-$80, but include full rebate mail-in coupons or we have them in the store). The catch, of course, is that each box of 50 test strips is going to cost you another $50, And most people test their blood sugar between four and eight times a day.

That is what I call profit.

I was more referring to an oddly common fallacy where people have this strange tendency to think that it's okay to sell things at a loss just because they're moving tons of inventory. If every sale is at a loss... <p><hr /><div style="text-align:center">Image

The beauty of the Virtual Console makes me almost want to cry. I bow before the mighty Wii.

Also: So this is why Nintendo cracked down on emulation sites. I have a hunch that every title or nearly every title on this list is on the "fuck you don't emulate" list. <p>-_-___-___-___-_-

Nintendo's been quick to crack down on illegal usage of its hardware ever since the NES days with Tengen. They've always been among the staunchest anti-emulation companies, long before they'd even thought of the Wii. One of the reasons for using cartridges in the N64, or minidiscs in the Gamecube. In fact, I'd be surprised if one of the reasons they're pushing ahead with the virtual console wasn't to discourage illegal emulation, rather than cracking down on emulation to help support the virtual console.

Also, there aren't specific games they hunt down to keep people from emulating, they crack down on any ROMs for one of their consoles that they hear word of. <p><hr />

To (very succinctly) summarise, MSX was a computer that went through several iterations and had Microsoft's backing (in the form of some programming). It never really took off in the US, but it was apparently fairly successful elsewhere.

According to Wikipedia, the following series started off on the MSX:
Dragon Quest
Metal Gear
Puyo Puyo
Parodius
Wizardry
Ys

As well as receiving entries from the following:
Aleste
Dragon Slayer
Golvellius
Gradius (Nemesis)
Castlevania (as Vampire Killer)
Xak
Zanac

Pretty neat. <p>

Dan: Yeah, you've changed a lot too, into an old man! I went to see the devil, now it's your turn!
Curtis: Oh, my pupil, so tenacious of life, guess I have to kill you again.
Dan: Shut up, before you run out of breath!
Curtis: I got rid of those smiles, there's no one left to disturb our game. Just you, and me.
Dan: Sounds fair, 'cuz I hate holding back, even for an old fart like yourself.
Curtis: Talk all you want, I won't need six bullets for you.
Dan: Or four for you.</span>

It's somehow disastrously amusing that Nintendo is selling their profit at one third of the price of Sony, and Sony is still raking in a lower profit margin than Nintendo.

When are the release dates for these things, anyway? <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. -- PS3: 11 Nov (Japan), 17 Nov (US, Canada), March 2007 (European Union, Australia, New Zealand), Q1 2007 (Mexico)
-- Wii: 19 Nov (U.S.A.), 2 Dec (Japan), 7 Dec (Australia), 8 Dec (European Union)

This is from wikipedia, so take that as you will.

Speaking of profits, it's being said that Sony has cut the price of the lower model PS3 in the Japanese market from 59,800 yen to 49,800. Also, HDMI output ports have been added to the cheaper model. <p><hr /><div style="text-align:center">dictionary.com | encyclopædia dramatica
