For the record...<blockquote>Quote:
Nintendo: What type of special moves will Solid Snake have [in Super Smash Bros. Brawl]?

Masahiro Sakurai:
That's a good question. We thought a lot about what to do with Snake and his moves in Smash Bros. because Snake as you all know is the type of character who in most games is walking around with a gun. Whereas in Smash Bros. I didn't want to try and bring in the real weaponry like guns and rifles that people can get their hands on into the game, so that was a bit of a challenge.

But conversely I thought that if we could use things like rocket launchers and other explosives, that would be fitting for Snake, but also something we could use in a very comedic fashion in the game, and so we're looking at that - and who knows, maybe he'll end up just exclusively using explosives.

And he'll use a cardboard box. [Laughter]
</blockquote>Anyway, the majority of the characters in the Smash Brothers series have been "classic." That is to say, they're guys who have some combination of of fame, oldschool, and/or universal appeal. Sometimes they throw you a curveball (Mewtwo), but for the most part, the character roster has traditionally been fairly classic. The Metal Gear series has been around for a long time, and has a large following, and Solid Snake is a classic example of a scruffy action movie hero type guy. Besides, even if you're not really into Metal Gear, I'm sure most people can appreciate the comedic value of the infamous cardboard box.

I can't wait to see what Kirby looks like after stealing Snake's abilities.

So, yea, Pyramid Head might be hardcore and all, but he's way too obtuse to be considered a "classic." Besides, survival horror is a rather serious and macabre jenre to attempt to include in a nonsensical series like Smash Brothers. Soma Cruz may be a little newschool, but it's still much more likely that we'll see him, or one of the Belmonts, or Mega Man, or Sonic, or the dude from Startropics, or Hell, even a metal slime than anyone from a series like Silent Hill.

Also, Wario's motorcycle is boss. <p><div style="text-align:center">Image</div></p>Edited by: [url=http://p068.ezboard.com/brpgww60462.showUserPublicProfile?gid=brainwalker>BrainWalker</A]&nbsp; Image at: 5/18/06 17:48

My friend pointed out the other day that if they're going to buy the rights to use Snake off of Capcom, they might as well do the same for Mega Man. He's twice the classic Snake is. <p>-_-___-___-___-_-

Then you might want to tell your friend that MGS is a Konami series, not Capcom. <p><hr />

I'm fairly certain that this only means that it's practically ensured that the Princely Prince will be in the new game.

I hope you realize that there's only about fifty quadrillion princes out there in video game lore. <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. While I can come to agree that a character like PH doesn't necessarily fit in any sort of Nintendo game, I don't necessarily agree with the statement that he isn't 'classic'.

Beyond perhaps Nemesis from the RE series, he's the only figure from any sort of horror game that's well known even by non-horror fans, and his appearance, noise, and style of doing things made him an instant hit with those who got to see him in action.

In terms of the survival horror genre, and indeed all video game-dom, PH is a classic character. He just doesn't necessarily mesh well with crossovers and the like. <p><hr />

Dan: Yeah, you've changed a lot too, into an old man! I went to see the devil, now it's your turn!
Curtis: Oh, my pupil, so tenacious of life, guess I have to kill you again.
Dan: Shut up, before you run out of breath!
Curtis: I got rid of those smiles, there's no one left to disturb our game. Just you, and me.
Dan: Sounds fair, 'cuz I hate holding back, even for an old fart like yourself.
Curtis: Talk all you want, I won't need six bullets for you.
Dan: Or four for you.</span>

Well, you may have a point, but while everyone's favorite horny sadistic mysogynist has infamy reaching beyond the borders of his series, you have to realize that Smash Brothers is rated T. PH may be a classic among people in our age range, but when you start getting down to the T-rating theshold, you're kind of stepping out of the demographic that is really equipped to appreciate him. The appeal just isn't quite as universal. Tragic :( <p><div style="text-align:center">Image</div></p>

I cite myself in the case of PH v. Classicness, in the fact that I didn't even know he existed till I heard he'd be in the movie. >.> <p><hr />

The only reason I know of him originally myself is because of End, so that's some weird kind of circular thing going on there. Though to be fair, I would likely have learned of him later from an unrelated source (and still not the game). <p><hr />

Yeah, End is pretty much where I first heard of Pyramid Head, too. <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. PH for Mayor!

Unread postby Nick Shogun » Sat May 20, 2006 6:46 am

I don't think PH comes up much in the contest of greatest video game characters; he is pretty obscure. The only reason I knew about him is because I've read all the in-depth examinations of the Silent Hill video games.

He is pretty cool, though. <p><div style="text-align:center">

Okay, I'll basically restate. In the sense and context that he exists (given that he exists in a series of games that is primarily only picked up by a now-dedicated fanbase and a few curious shoppers), he is a classic character.

As far as horror games go (which none of you play, save perhaps Ash) he is one of the most memorable characters to emerge in... a while. Since none of you generally play such games, it falls to people who have played them to inform you.

Even still, it won't have the same impact on you as it will the person who did the reporting; indeed, they saw the character, and thus they were affected by it.

Okay? All right.

That is all. <p><hr />

Point made, End.

Maybe the survival-horror fans and friends should band together and petition a Horror version of Super Smash Bros.

You could put in Pyramid Head, Nemisis, Jill Valentine, Bloodrayne, Cthulhu, Dante, and maybe even that chick from Parasite Eve. I dunno. Good idea? I'd support it. <p><div style="text-align:center">

... I could get in on that. Some sort of arena style deathmatch. Perhaps throw in some classics, like Jason or the Wolf Man or something, as well. I'd be down with that. <p><hr />

Or Frankenstein's monster. Not the inarticulate beast from the movies, but the one from the original book, who learns reason and compassion from watching a poor peasant family but is corrupted by selfishness and his nature as an outcast and commits great atrocities against his creator in pursuit of selfish goals, before finally dogsledding into the North Pole to commit suicide by self-combustion. <p>-_-___-___-___-_-

He wouldn't do the stiff-legged zombie walk, for one thing. The monster in the book actually had superhuman agility.

Plus, he should start every battle by saying something like "They are dreadful circumstances indeed that bring me to this point, but this is my chosen path," or something cool like that. <p>-_-___-___-___-_-

Also tell him that they didn't buy the rights to anyone, Snake's creator begged Nintendo to include him. It wouldn't surprise me if there was no money (or only a token amount) that changed hands.
