My statements are mostly based on the fact that I've played a fair number of MMORPGs in my day as well, and probably the most extensive of those that I would say had any real depth was FFXI.
In FFXI, you could
tell the guys who'd bought their accounts with the high-level characters on ebay or IGN or whatever the fuck or purchased billions of gil with real money; they all
sucked. They didn't know anything about proper gear choices. They didn't know anything about proper party dynamics. They had no idea what they were supposed to be doing, didn't understand how their skills should work, didn't understand how the game's more complex abilities (such as combination skillchains) worked, etc.
If you do some research on other forums and read a lot of FAQs and do a good bit of research, I'm sure you can figure things out. Since you'll apparently be playing with some people you know, they'll probably be a little more lenient with you making mistakes, but you never know. I would never suggest that it took great "skill" to play an MMORPG, because it usually doesn't; what separates good players from not-good players is
knowledge, and sometimes that takes a while to soak up. <p>
