URGENT - READ ASAP

Postby Halitosis the Hedgehog » Tue Aug 12, 2003 12:55 am

Apparently, there's a HUGE Hacker attack going on as we speak, the biggest ever, apparently. Approximately 6,000 sites currently have a bug, which when you have it, hackers can gain full power of your computer. They can run any program, turn it on and off, make the disc drive pop out, move the mouse around, etc etc etc. If you have a newer version of Windows, download this patch immediately. www.microsoft.com/technet...03-026.asp

If you have 95 or 98 you aren't in danger.

I wouldn't say 'HUGE' if it's only 6000 domains. If that's the only way it spreads, then it'll have a very small impact indeed, even if the pages infected included slashdot, newgrounds, and PA all combined (though at that point I guess it would move from 'very small' to 'almost significant'). Remember the 'iloveyou' virus? Email is WAY more prolific a medium.

Call me cynical, but I think that chances are, if you've heard of this, then the attack is already over, and the damage has already been done.

*goes to read the article about it*

...yeah, okay. That was revised last on July 21st. Computer-wise, that's AGES ago. Not to mention the patch was intended for, and relevant to, network admins--not end users.

Still something to keep in mind if you ARE a network admin, but other than that, this fire drill has been a success--you may return to your classrooms. <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. Not that old Priam. Seems Pervy, and a couple of people at GC as well, have been hit with it.

Well, it would probably help if Pervy and the other people who got hit with it weren't morons.

Sorry, but someone had to say it :( <p>

I just got this thing yesterday. If you click on that link again, you'll see that it was revised today. There's some kind of virus going around that exploits this. Myself, and several people I know have already gotten it.

And.....July 21st is like a month ago. That's not that old at all.

edit: As of about 20 minutes ago, I have used the Symantec tool to rid myself of this virus. I'd link it, but I don't remember the URL.

Actually, it appears i was wrong about the number of sites-- It's apparently an unofficial contest between hackers-hack 6,000 sites in six hours. Which means, there is much more than 6,000, as multiple hackers were attempting at that many. And the virus can apparently be spread extremely easily, through any files. I witnessed a good friend of mine being hacked yesterday, And my brother witnessed many, many more.

Okay, that was old news. The thing I said about the virus, though, was like yesterday, and that's the patch you want to have to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Adware can also excise it, I have found.

This isn't really any more dangerous than most trojan's. It basically has the same effect, and yes 6000 domains affected isn't really very many at all.
