Chapter 1:Familiar Faces

Ten years after Meteor was destoryed. Everything is perfect, except for the fact
that one person, no matter how hard they try, will never return from their watery grave.

"Cloud." a voice calls from a far. "Yes?" he answers. "Where are you?" the voice asks.
"Here! Here I am." he tells the familiar voice. "I can't see you!" Cloud yells looking
around. "I'm scared." the voice said, "Why aren't you here protecting me anymore?"
the voice began to fade. "But," Cloud starts, "I can't find you." "I'm beyond the
Lifestream, come and find me. I'm scared alone." the voice faded away. "Wait !,"
Cloud yelled, "Aeris!!" "Cloud." another voice calls. "Cloud, wake up!" Cloud slowly
opens his eyes. The glare of the sun forces him to close his eyes again. As his eyes
adjust he looks around.He finds himself in his bed. The covers were falling of his
shirtless chest. "Cloud." Tifa calls again. "Will you get up. It' s almost noon." Cloud eyes
Tifa. Tifa was wearing her short black skirt and white tee, with her favorite black
suspenders. She stood in the doorway, tilted her head and said, "Cloud get up. Zack' s
waiting for you upstairs."
Tifa and Cloud married after Meteor was stopped, and had a son. They live in
Nibelheim, downstairs of Tifa' s new bar, the 7th Hevan. It was built in front of the
entrance of Mount Nibel beside the Shinra Mansion; where Vincent, Reno, Rude, Elena,
and Tseng live. Cloud's son was born nine months after their marrige. Genki Strife is
nine years old , with his father' s reputation for being powerful and his mother' s kind
nature. Genki has gained the nickname of 'Toad', for his natural agility in and out of
water. He uses a sword, that like his father, and can just as efficently fight without a
weapon, like his mother.
Cloud dresses himself in his Soldier pants, but instead of his blue shirt he wore
a white tee with a short brown and green vest on top. He pulls his large sword over his
shoulder from the corner of the roomm where it laid. He walked upstairs to the top floor
where the bar was set up. Reno and Rude were already in the front counter quietly
drinking. "Yo Cloud." Zack greeted his freind by patting him on his back. " Hey Zack."
Cloud smiled.
Zack was found half-dead by the city of Kalm. He was filled in on what happen
when he woke from his coma and discovered by Cloud. Cloud had gone Kalm with Barret
to pick up Marlene and Elmyra. Zack claimedthat after him and Cloud had reached Midgar, he found himself crawling into the city wounded. Next thing he knew he was walking chanting ‘Reunion’, but only made it to the field. The constant monster attacks drained him, and without a weapon he laid there helpless. He thought he was going to die. After slipping into a coma, some men heading into Kalm found him, and were amazed that he wasn’t finished off by Kalm Fangs, so they took care of him while he laid in the coma.
“Hey Cloud.” Tifa called to him from behind the counter. He walked to her. “You don’t look well. Are you feeling okay?” She walked from behind the counter and touched his forehead. Cloud began to rub his chin, “Now that you mention it, I did have this weird dream.” Tifa looks at Cloud with concern. “Well,” He began, “Aeris…” “Aeris?” she repeated. “Yeah,” Cloud said with a serious look, “Aeris called out to me. She said she was scared ,and aked why I wasn’t there – protecting her.” Cloud finishes and isn’t even sure of what he said. “Well, I don’t know Cloud…” Tifa goes back to the counter to refill Rude and Reno’s drinks. “Why don’t you stop thinking about it for now, Zack said he found a job you can do.” Cloud turns to Zack. And poor Zack hadn’t the slightest clue as to what Tifa and Cloud were talking about. “Anyway…” he shrugs as he shook his head side to side, “That’s right. Miss Elmyra needs help with something and…” “Miss Elmyra?” Cloud interrupts. “What’s with the formalities all of a sudden?” Cloud teased. “Shut up Cloud!” Zack stomps his foot in anger, and crossed his arms over his chest. “Look do you want the job or not?” “So-rrry, continue please.” “Okay,” Zack continues. “She’s willing to pay us 3000 GIL each.” “Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait, for what?” Cloud interrupts again. “She wouldn’t say.” Zack said raising a brow. “Well,” Cloud said reluctantly, “I don’t really…fine I’m in.” Cloud and Zack shake hands.

For no reason the drunken Reno yells, “Incoming…” he slurred at the top of his voice. The bar door suddenly flies open. “Hi mom, hi dad, hey Reno Rude- and Zack!” Toad runs upstairs to his room, without even a passing glance. Through the doorway a very familiar face storms in. Vincent stood at the doorway with his entire head covered in black paint. “Where is he?!?!” Vincent really annoyed. Cloud, Zack, Reno, and Rude started snickering, but Vincent’s ‘evil eye’ quickly silenced them. “What happen?” Tifa asked trying her hardest not to laugh. “Your son dumped the whole bucket of paint on me. Vincent had been painting some rooms in the Shinra Mansion. “On purpose?” Tifa asked. “I SAID I WAS SORRY!!!” Toad yelled from his room. “BUT I TOLD YOU NOT TO TOUCH IT!!” Vincent yelled back. “I’m sorry Vincent, he was only trying to help.” Tifa apologized while refilling Rude and Reno’s cups. Vincent turns to leave. “Fine,” he scoffs, “I’m gonna wash up before its permanent/” “Sorry again Vincent.” Tifa yells as he leaves.
“Okay Zack,” Cloud starts, “Let’s go.” Cloud kissed Tifa good-bye, “We’ll talk about the dream later.” He whispered to her. She smiles and Cloud and Zack head off. “Later Tifa,” Zack laughed, “Don’t let Reno and Rude drink to much!” Reno and Rude glare with dirty looks, but Zack just ignores them and follows Cloud. Zack runs after Cloud. “Uhh, Cloud,” Zack started as he rolled his eyes to the side, “I was wondering about that dream you and Tifa were talking about…” As Cloud stood there listening to Zack he crossed he arms over his chest and leaned off on his left leg. “Do you think Aeris can still, like, be alive?” “Zack I told you,” Cloud started as he began walking again, “She’s dead… I carried her cold, lifeless body to the water and…” Cloud’s voice began to fade. “Look Zack can we not talk about this now?” Zack and Cloud continued on. They mounted the Gold Chocobos that stood in the field of dark green grass, and rode off to Midgar.
Many people had moved from the run down cities of Midgar. Even so, there were some who couldn’t leave their homes no matter how bad it got. Cloud walked toward the home where Aeris used to live. All the flowers still bloomed and the air was filled with an awe inspiring fragrance that left Cloud lost in thought. Zack knocked on the door as Cloud stood there in a trance. The door slowly opened. “Hello Zack.”: Elmyra greeted in a rather cold tone. Zack looked at her face. It used to be so warm and inviting, but now… “H-hello Miss Elmyra.” Elmyra looked over at Cloud. “Are we done reminiscing over there Cloud?” Elmyra says coldly. Cloud turns around, turns, and taps the back of his head. “Ohh-uh, no I was just – hi Elmyra.” She smiles and lets the two in. “You’re what?!?!” Zack slammed his hands on the table. “Calm down Zack,” Cloud warns, “But who will take care of the flowers when you leave?” Cloud asked with concern. Elmyra stands up and walks toward a picture frame by the vase of flowers. ”These flowers will continue to grow and bloom without me. As long as Aeris’ will lives, these flowers will live eternally.” She pauses. Cloud stands and walks to the door in disappointment. “Okay Elmyra,” Cloud started, “But I’m not accepting any payment…” He leaves. “Sorry, I can’t either miss Elmyra.” Zack adds in agreement. *Outside in Sector 6* “You know Cloud we just gave up 6000 GIL.” Zack sips his hands in his pocket. “Look Zack,” Cloud clenches his fists, “You didn’t have to give up your pay. I had my reasons for…” “Cloud relax,” Zack interrupted the enraged mercenary. “I understand. Miss Elmyra has been living there for many years, but you have to understand, without Aeris there’s nothing else for her here.” Cloud begins to walk and motions Zack to follow.
In the bar Tifa was talking with Yuffie, who had just arrived on her Gold Chocobo Evra. As they talked Rude and Reno were drunk, and giggling. Rude whispered to Reno, “Do it.” “Reno giggled and shook his head. “No.” than directly after he said “’Kay.” Reno reached down and grabbed Yuffie’s left leg. She slapped his hand and Reno pulled back. “Well!” Reno said at the reaction. Than him and Rude began giggling again. Yuffie continued to talk to Tifa while Rude kept daring Reno to do the same thing. Reno and Yuffie had been going out for four years now, but still the two lovers made no commitment, both being so full of pride prevented any sort of marriage. Wutai has gotten back on track thanks to Cloud’s ‘generous’ contributions of Materia. Toad storms downstairs from his room. He enters a trance. “Oh! Um mom?” “Yes Toad.” Tifa answers. “Hi Yuffie! Can I ride my Chocobo around? Please.” “Till your dad gets home, okay?” “Yeah!” Toad cheers, and runs out of the bar.

The old well in the center of Nibel was still standing, but has long gone dry. Toad slows his pace as he past the well, than completely stops. From the well came an eerie howl, and unlike the Niebl wolves, but more like a ghost. Toad stood brave, but quivering in his boots. “I-I’ m not s-s-cared. I’ll face you!” He shouts at the sound as he pulled a small sword from the sheath that hung off his hip. Toad climbed onto the ledge of the well. Holding the sword in his right hand, he climbed down the well with his left. He slowly made his way down the dried, crumbling well. Finally on ground he made his way through the dark, cobweb-lined well. Drips of water could be heard in the distance. “Wait,” he thought, “The well’s supposed to be dry.

Than why…” he paused. In the distance footsteps could be heard. The dragging footsteps moved closer and closer. As they did a small light appeared. The light moved closer and closer. The footsteps became louder and louder. “Is that a Tonberry?” He thought. “Ahhhhh!!!!” Toad yells at the top of his lungs. He turns and runs back the way he came. With his sword still in his hand he scrambled up the well’s wall. He grabbed the well’s edge in attempts to pull himself up, but the old well wall finally gave way.

“Mom!” Toad yelled as he fell. At the bar Yuffie and Tifa were still talking. A sudden chill ran down Tifa’s spine. “What’s wrong Tifa?” Yuffie asked her distraught friend. “It’s Toad.” She answers, “Something’s wrong.” Tifa jumped the counter and rushed out the bar. As she ran towards the town entrance Cloud and Zack were just arriving. “Cloud!” Tifa yells for him in tears.

Seeing the distress in her eyes Cloud unsheathed his Ultima Weapon. “What happened?” He asked as she ran into his arms. “Its Toad!” “What happened?” “I don’t know. I have a terrible feeling.
I let him go outside to play with his chocobo, and he knows better than to leave the area.” “Shh,” Cloud tried to calm her, “How far could he have gone on a Yellow Chocobo?” Tifa looks up to Cloud in tears. “I heard him call out to me…” “It was probably your imagination.” Cloud assures. Tifa pulls away from him. ”It’s not my imagination. It’s a mother’s intuition. Something happened to my son.” She stamped her foot in anger.

“Okay, okay.” Cloud backs away. “If you heard him call out than he’s probably in town, ‘kay?” Tifa wipes her eyes. “Don’t worry, I’ll help look.” Zack said as he stood in his cocky posture. Yuffie comes outside and walks to the group. Tifa looks at Yuffie.

“It’s okay. You can go home. We can handle this.” “You sure Tifa?” “Yeah.” Tifa waves bye to Yuffie as she left the town dragging the drunken Reno behind her.

The three searched for hours for Toad. Tifa stood by the well, worried that they may never find Toad. She began to tremble, than started to cry.
Cloud walks over to her to try and comfort her, though there is nothing he could say to ease her pain.

She leans against Cloud’s chest and continues to cry. “What if we never find him…”

“Don’t say that Tifa. He’s a strong boy. He’ll be okay.”

“Hey guys!” Zack calls. Zack’s voice seemed to echo from afar. Cloud and Tifa look around in confusion. “Down here!” Cloud and Tifa look over the well’s edge. They see Zack waving to them from the well’s bottom. “Yo.” Zack laughed.

“What are you doing down there?” Cloud asked in an irritated voice.

“Maybe he’s in here. I would’ve explored a dried up well if I were his age. There’s even a long tunnel down here.”

“Tunnel?” Tifa and Cloud repeated.
