A (new?) Idea! Comments and Critques wanted!

Unread postby Besyanteo » Tue Dec 09, 2003 1:02 am

As some of you know, I used to RP with a PvP type group before I joined RPGWW. Well, even they couldn't be death angst and destruction 24/7, so they made something decidedly less negative.
The RP world was called SF, short for San Francisco. An Alt Life RP.
Everyone had one character. Themself. Yes, that's right, you played an alternate reality version of yourself. Here's how it works.

1.) Character History:
Take everything that has happened within the span of your own life, and dump that on this character. That is his or her base history. Then we start to have some fun with it.
Before the RP begins, a permanent location is selected. This is where all the characters now live. Their Doma as it were. Through means of your own choosing, you moved to this location recently and are new in town. You may know that other RPGWWers have moved there, or not know at your own discretion. From this point on, your character's timeline and your own real life are completely separate. Remember that. (I've also seen people take grudges based on the happenings of this kind of RP. "You'd do that to ME?! >:!!" ... I trust we're all more mature than that.)

2.) Playing:
When you play in this style, not all of the rules of the real world apply. For example: Where did the money come from for that apartment? I don't know, but you're in it for now. Did Shaun just build a secret weapons lab in his basement? Sure, so long as he doesn't specifically come after you without good reason, he can go ahead and do that. Can Reako turn the world into furries? ... ... ok, no, that's just getting out of hand.
On that note! You have one race choice: HUMAN. Jean the Chocolate Kitsune is not going to walk into the arcade waving his fuzzy tail as he goes. Not without alot of hard work by several PCs at any rate.
This is a semi-spammy RP setting. Look at it kind of like Something Positive, or Real Life Comic. This also means, ironically, BW could date a catgirl, Ryoko, or Beldandy, but she can't appear very often (Or, you get one shot and then she's axed. >:)
You can die, break bones, damage your brain, whatever, as a result of being hit by things, sliced up, or falling from great heights. If it doesn't kill you, great, you can spring back to health in a few weeks! ... Of course, if you die, then you're dead. Or very very lucky and happen to know someone with the time and resources required to revive you (Don't bet on it.)

My thought is that this would be primarily a chat RP type thing. It would be -intended- to run longer than the 'few days' period that most kawaii/highschool/other spammy RP ideas we get, but obviously if it doesn't then it just doesn't.

Questions, comments, ideas? <p>

There's always room for Jello, Especially CHRISTMAS Jello.</p>

Sweet!

Unread postby Besyanteo » Wed Dec 10, 2003 12:56 am

Then all we need to do is vote on a location we like and begin a chat CI whenever. It would be best to pick a place we're all somewhat familiar with, or most of us are familiar with.

... Therefore I bow to the experience of others and nominate the Ohio/Kentucky area as a generalized point, and suggest a town somewhere around there be chosen.

Ideas for a specific place?

None for the town, but I'd like to throw in on this as well, if you don't have too many people already. <p>

Well, I'm not familiar with any cities in that area, so whatever everyone else decides...

Also, with the flexibility of reality... Is magic allowed in small doses as well as the rest of the lot?

I would allow parlor trick magic, such as tricks done with cards. I will allow small portions of uber-l337 ninja skillz. I will even allow you to stuff an especially annoying NPC coworker into a breif case and ram needles into it. Just be reasonable for the -most- part.
In honesty, this WOULD be kind of like the chat spamming we do, but wattered down and with IC continuity rather than real life continuity.

Which means you can buy yourself a house. And a car. >.> Or whatever else you can't quite reach right now but feasibly could under other circumstances.

As an (amusing!) afterthought, it might be possible to RP *other* people later on once this gets started.

Also, I nominate Dayton in specific for this purpose. For the record, it is a rather large city (it has an actual downtown area that's not good to walk around on foot in at night, unless you'z seriously hardcore or masochistic) with a bazillion and a half one-way streets--it's said that half the people driving in downtown Dayton aren't on the way to their destination; they are passing their destination so that they can turn around and come back to it five streets later.

A major river runs through here (the Little Miami river), and cuts the city right about a third of the way in. Two colleges dwell in the city, both on the same side of the river--one is a community college, very friendly and comfortable; and one is actually a university, complete with residence halls and whathaveyou. Additionally, at least two functioning hospitals are here, as well as one that has been shut down.

Also of note is the recently-built Fifth-Third Field, home of the Dayton Dragons minor league baseball team! It's a very well known place to go and just have a good time--the people who run the place go out of their way to make sure the whole event is entertaining, fairly independently of what happens in the baseball game.

Just a little ways away from the (Sinclair) Community College, there is an area of the city a couple blocks large known as the Oregon District. All the weirdest things happen here, and any given urban legend is actually somewhat likely in there. It's known for parties of every nature, fun of every nature and then some, and something that will freak ANYONE out.

On an atmospheric note, a train runs through Dayton, near the outskirts on one side. Not enough to usually obstruct important traffic in the city, but on any given night you can usually hear the trains running about every two hours or so.

Of course, the Wright Bicycle Shop still exists, and has been preserved for posterity, along with the surrounding area on its block. It's not generally bothered at all, partly because it's on one of the less-busy streets in the city.

Not to mention the suburbs. Oh, the suburbs!

"Warm and Cheerful" Centerville, home of the white-collar worker and their preppy, angsty-or-jockish kids. Not tremendously notable, except for its fairly legitimate comfortable, affluent feeling.
Oakwood, the only place in the world I've ever seen traffic signs reading "DO NOT STAND", and the only place I would ever think they might actually be enforced. Don't speed here, even one mph over the limit. I've seen someone pulled over for anticipating a light turning green. On the plus side, though, the lawns are all perfectly manicured and the houses are nice-looking.
Miamisburg, where the Dayton Mall resides. The Dayton Mall is actually quite large as malls go, and has been around for a very long time.
Fairborn, home to Wright State University (which has mostly commuter students), and the Fairfield Commons Mall. This mall is newer than the Dayton Mall, and its comprising stores illustrate that rather nicely--it has a slight feeling in general of art-noveau. Wright State is actually a decently respected campus, and a good gathering ground for all purposes. Nearby is the Ervin J Nutter Center, where many concerts, hockey games, and other random large-scale events take place.

Other people can comment on Huber Heights, Xenia, or any other suburb if they want, because I don't know those areas very well.

All in all, there is very little that is missing from Dayton, as far as RP needs go. Submitted for group approval. <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. I'll agree with Dayton. And the fact that we have someone/several someones who know things about it helps the setting greatly.

Unless, anyone objects, perhaps an opening chat RP session come Tomorrow after 8PM/Monday/Tuesday? Not sure about the rest of my schedule this week...

Oh yeah. Let's not forget King's Island amusement park, easily within 20 miles of most Dayton area cities. Famous internationally for the wooden rollercoaster called "The Beast," which is the fastest wooden coaster in the world (or at least it was the last time I checked). Also another good, go-there-and-have-fun-with-friends-and/or-family place, if you got about $25 per person to spend for entry. There's even a waterpark within its bounds! <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. Or just do what we did in the DF rp's. Either "Sex-related goings on: *happen!*" or some such "*conveniently move into another room for an hour or two*" type thing. Not like people never have sex in the real world; they just don't usually do it in the open.

Also, has this happened at all yet? If not, I'd like to be reminded when it *does* happen, if someone wouldn't mind. I've switched back to my "OMG Priam" aim account, by the by. <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. Since this is actually looking to get started, I think now might be a good time to open the floor to a Q&A session about Dayton and the surrounding area, for those who might care to get some sort of backstory set up. Obviously some of us live here or have lived here, and some other of us have visited, but some of us have done neither.

You've got questions, maybe? Submit them to the floor. SUBMIT! <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television.
