New Freestyle RP ("The Twelve")

Unread postby Molokidan » Tue Sep 14, 2004 3:45 am

(Edit of 10/1: This game is CLOSED!! Sorry dudes!)

"The Twelve"

The setting: A large wasteland island far from civilization.

--Introduction--

The vast wasteland stretched out for miles. It wasn`t a desert, but there was no greenery anywhere. It was if there had been a monumental battle fought here years ago, the scars and memories of death and blood forever left behind in the soil. The first men to come to this island, the way it is now, had named it "The Killing Field".

Barely visible, on the horizon, was a hulking grey tower, stretching up into the clouds. It was the tower of the Killing Field Tournament, a tournament held every three years in honor of the battle fought here decades aeons ago. Previously, there had only been cash awards offered, however, this year. . .

The tournament commitee, a group of 7 highly-skilled bounty hunters who first started the tournament 24 years ago, announced the prize only three months ago, after 400 competitors had already applied. From that moment until the day of the tournament, the entrees jumped by over a thousand.

But why? What item could possibly entice so many warriors into trying their skills in the most infamous tournament in the world, known for its grueling elimination rounds and anything-goes battles?

The name of this item as well as where it was excavated are both kept in the shadows. The faces of the commitee members themselves are kept hidden, so no one knows how or why this item was brought to public eye. But it is said, that this item is the key to opening the door to the "Space-Time Continuum", the crux of the universe. What lies in there. . .is anybody`s guess.

Gathered today are these 1400 contestants, each one of them risking their lives to get their hands on the item. Most have already arrived, whether it be by boat, airship, or their own wings. Colors and shapes of all sizes of creatures have made their prescence here, as well as battle-scared bounty hunters to young, plucky warriors.

The beach of the island was as plain as the island itself, there was no sea life to be seen anywhere. The crowd of 1400 was growing impatient under the glare of the hot sun, and some adventurous people had already run off into the desert, never to return again.

What lies ahead for these poor souls? And more importantly, who has the brains, strength, and desire to rise to the top and claim the life-threatening prize?

----

This is a freestyle RP, that, obviously, is going to focus heavily on fighting. So, it`d probably be in your best interest to make a character focused on combat, whether it be physical, mental, or magical. Just post your sheet here and I`ll check and admit you. Don`t hold back on your character`s abilities, etc. Make whatever sort of crazy stuff up you want. There are just a few catches:

1. No mind control, time control, or shapeshifting. Pocket Dimension-creating is allowed with some limits.
2. Monster summoning and materialization, etc. is okay, but has to be a specialized summoning or materialization. i.e. you only summon dragons, or you can only materialize metal things, or swords, for a specific time.
3. Flying is allowed, if your character has wings, but that must be incorporated into their special skills.
4. If you are mage, you can only specialize in a certain element of magic. Same goes for warriors, they can only specialize in one type of weaponry.

Anyway, more rules will come up here as people do stuff that is too powerful. =) I`ll start the RP once we get 4 people, but as many people can apply as they want, so don`t hold back!

Last note!! This is NOT going to be a crazy 24-hour fight fest. There *is* a story! I just haven`t revealed it yet, due to the mystery and suspense! *dun dun dun* But seriously, I have a lot planned, so there is going to be a lot of things going on behind the scenes here. . .it`s gonna be good! There are two things this RP is going to focus on: 1) character drama and 2) battles, in that order. The tournament is not the main focus of the RP, more of like the "Opening Stage", or the "Prologue." So for those of you looking at this and saying "Hmm...this is an Arena RP....*frown*...." It`s not! I just want to start it off with a bang. =)

Character Sheet-

Name: Adarl Writon
Race: Half-Drow
Age: 44 (appears 21)
Sex: Male
Physical Description: Blue skin and slightly pointed ears, long black hair with streaks of white. Squared face with green eyes, loose fitting brown studded leather, and a bastard sword strapped to his back.

Background:
Quiet and reserved, this mercenary for hire is easily missed in the various taverns and meeting places of cities and villages. When spotted, its not uncommon for some to hurl insults at his racial heritage. One swing of his large bastard sword, however, is usually enough to demonstrate these actions unwise, and that he is far stronger than one would think from appearance. Despite this, he usually tries to avoid conflict, be it by negotiation or intimidation. However, should the need arise, he is both swift and merciless in his chosen task.

Not much is known to others about the man, other than his being a half drow, half human. He is reluctant to speak of his past, and has great difficulty in trusting others right away. While not entirely difficult to get along with, he makes no effort to know those he works with, only speaking to his cohorts when needed. The only things that seem to modivate him are his given assignment, and seeking information for a paticular Drow...

Special Ability: Adarl is skilled in using a Bastard Sword, often surprising his opponents with how easily he can weild it and the speed he can swing.

Stats:

HP: 300
SP: 20
Evade: 10

Strength: 5
Defense: 4
Magic Attack: 0
Magic Defense: 3
Speed: 2
Stamina: 3
Intelligence: 3

Weapon of Choice:
Bastard Sword

Skill #1: Overhead Slash - Adarl raises his sword over his head, making a running leap and bringing his blade down quickly at his opponent.

Skill #2: Blade Ram - While in a defensive posture, his blade held before his chest, Adarl charges at the enemy, attempting to either knock them down or off balance.

Skill #3: Tri-Cut - Adarl lets loose with a burst of adrenaline, quickly making three slashes at his opponent.

The Great Nevareh

As shall I, though I will undoubtably get it wrong.

Unread postby The Great Nevareh » Tue Sep 14, 2004 11:43 pm

Let's see how I do.

Name: Zachary Templeton
Race: Human. Really, really human.
Age: 27
Sex: Male
Physical Description: Pale caucasian complexion, with clear blue eyes and somewhat unkempt dark hair. Small, fashionable steel-rimmed spectacles adorn his face and sit upon his nose. Well-proportioned face and body, but not to the point of being extremely attractive. He could be, if he tried, but he doesn't appear to. Wears what appears to be a blue duster coat over a set of normal clothes, the strange parts being the greaves and vambraces he's wearing. He doesn't appear to carry a weapon.

Background: Zachary is a student of the arcane arts, though he fancies himself as a "Runic Knight" of the days of old. He doesn't have much of an interesting past- it isn't shrouded in mystery, it's just not all that interesting. He's currently studying at an Igalan magical institution, and he's entered this contest mostly for the fact that the item, if acquired, would be very useful in writing his thesis so he can graduate from the doctorate program and start teaching.

Special Skill: Zachary wields a form of pressure/gravity sorcery that he in turn uses to manipulate his environment. He blends this sorcery with reasonably competent staff combat.

Stats:

HP: 200
SP: 40
Evade: 5
Strength: 1
Defense: 2
Magic Attack: 5
Magic Defense: 3
Speed: 2
Stamina: 2
Intelligence: 4

Weapon of Choice: Staff- He carries one on his person that is extendable, so it can be carried with convenience.

Skill 1: Burst of Force- A combination of spell and staff use that creates the illusion of incredible staff proficiency- Though this is only a side effect. Zachary twirls his staff, then rams it to the ground, sending a pulse of speedy, almost-perceptible invisible force towards an opponent.

Skill 2- Weight- A spell that enchants Zachary's weapon for a short period of time, putting extra force behind the blow.

Skill 3- 100 Gs- A spell that essentially grounds flying opponents. Once on the ground, they can easily take off again, due to the short duration of this spell.

Oooh, gravity sorcery. I like! Except one problem, you put 5 skills down, but in the beginning you can have a max of three. So, decide which two to save for later, and you`re set! <p>---------------

Because I really should do more around here...

Unread postby JoshuaDurron » Wed Sep 15, 2004 2:41 pm

Name: Fwupo
Race: Moogle
Age: Some
Sex: Occasionally
Physical Description: A whopping four feet, three inches tall, and weighing in at almost one hundred and twenty pounds of cute and cuddly muscle, Fwupo is probably the most bizzare moogle you've ever met (unless you've met End.) Not only is his antenna slicked straight back so that it sticks out behind him like a spike, and not only are his wings an odd, translucent yellow color, but the fur on his head and face has been trimmed unusually short on most of the head, and grown out long on the top, creating a mohawk that is dyed a deep, forest green.
Background: Fwupo is one of those new fangled, trouble causing, moogles with no respect for authority. He likes fast music, hard fighting, and a carefree lifestyle. He dances when he feels like it, makes money doing whatever, and generally makes a nusiance of himself, doing whatever he feels like the rest of the time. He fights, drinks, plays cards, fights, gambles on races, dances, fights, makes enimies, robs bandits, robs merchants, fights... you get the idea.
Fwupo has no real trade, but rather does whatever he wants to do, whenever he wants to do it. And it just so happened that today, he felt like entering a tournament to aquire godly power. Who knows, tomorrow he may give that godly power to a kid so he can go get a drink in peace and quiet...

Special Ability: He is a moogle. Therefore, he SLAM DANCES!!!!111one (He can also play the banjo. However, this is not useful in combat, unless his enimies are vulnerable to really bad music.)

Weapon of Choice: Fwupo's weapons of choice include his forehead, his right and left shoulders, his right and left elbows, his right and left knees, and occasionally his hands and feet. Usually, he just slams into (and off of) people with astonishing speed and accuracy, dancing (quite litterally) through battle leaving the bruised and broken in his wake. Fwupo wears a headband on his head, along with padded knee and elbow pads that have steel caps. Otherwise, he trusts more to speed and agility than armor to protect himself.

Skills:
Skill #1: Supplex Shuffle-kupo
By running up to a happless victim, and then dancing around behind them, Fwupo can easily pick them up and drop them on their head. Not only is this painful, but it leaves them flat on their back.
Skill #2: Funky Chocobo-kupo
Fwupo immitates a Chocobo, strutting up to someone and then rappidly battering them with forehead, elbow, and knee in rappid succession. Looks so weird that most people don't realize what's coming.
Skill #3: Krimal's Cannonball-kupo
The dancer waltzes through a battle, flings himself into the air, and lands with an incredibly forceful flop on a poor, ususpecting victim below. <p>

Name: Theodarus Banjo
Race: Human
Age: looks in his early 30s (he ain't telling, but he's closer to 18s. Maybe its to make him look a little more "distinguished")
Sex: Male
Physical Description:
Medium built and bit "shoujo" looking (a.k.a "Pretty Boy" or "Girly Man"). He probably wouldn't be able to lift that crate, and will have problems with that light sack of grain beside it. He does not run fast at all, and he does not has the stamina to run far. The only thing that he does at any amounts of strength and speed is hand/fingers-based (throwing a dart, writing, etc).

Background:
You wouldn't know from looking at him, and you'll probably laugh if he told you, since he's so effemine, cultured and gentlemanly, but Theodarus is a bounty hunter. A particuarly weak looking but sneaky one with a unique magic: one that depends on the user's negotiation skills.

The skills came from a family beholden to a lord, but bored of negotiation the next land-lease and wanting to do "more useful things", he left and went into the world.

Many a bounty had been captured by just saying "Yes" to him, and more had been caught by his word-traps written on their bodies (some actually written in combat). And if you EVER sign one of his documents, you are so DOOMED.

Now he's on the trail of a bounty who is trying to lose himself by joining the contest's crowd. (little does he know that the informant had been bought and was lying through his teeth, AND suffering from unbearable amounts of itch right then in punishment due to a "contract")

Special Ability: Negotiation Magic
Weapon of Choice: Self-inking Writing Brush and Various amounts and types of Paper. Also has a metal writing pad with one edge grinded sharp

Skills:
Skill #1: Binding Agreement -- The spell is prepared when Theodarus says out a statement (details thought out in his mind) and asks for the victim to accept ("You will hop on one foot"). If the victim even shows a visible valid 'YES' response to the statement ("yea, right I'll do that *laughs*"), (s)he will be binded to the agreement, and do as it says (*hops on foot*).
Duration depends on (whichever comes first):
a) If Theodarus decide to break off the agreement in a valid way ("You can stop now")
b) If victim moves away from Theodarus's sight.
c) 15 minutes later.

Skill #2: Binding Contract -- Basically a Binding Agreement on a piece of paper, with the victim's signature. The differences:
a) The victim must FULLY agree to the contract. (No using of Binding Agreement or any other means of forcing a victim to sign a Binding Contract, not even small print.)
b) Duration is greatly extended to 3 months. This is even when the original contract's partchment is destroyed. (its PEOPLE the spell affects, not a piece 'o paper)
c) Multiple terms can be put on a single Contract.
d) Binding Contract is valid on BOTH sides. (if Binding Contract says "Stick to me for xx days", even Theodarus himself will not be able to master enough willpower to refuse the victim holding onto him for xx days).
e) No "line-of-sight" rule.

Skill #3: Words of Power -- By concentrating on a writing instrument for a bit, then writing a single/few words, Theodarus can change the properties of that object. Time spent on concentration depends on number of words he's going to write (about 10 seconds per word), and the amount of change said words will make.

Similar to Binding Agreement, details of the spell can be thought out in his mind, it will last 15 minutes, need line-of-sight, and can be broken at will.

Examples:
a) to write "Stop" will take just a moment (10 seconds) of concentration, while to write "Hit your own head" will take a bit more than half a minute.
b) to write "Run" on a horse will take just a moment of concentration, while to write the same on an inanimate cart (and expect it to move) will take the better part of half an hour.

Edit:
Skill #4: Words of Command -- By really tweaking his voice tone, mannerisms, volume, pitch, timing and a few other such things, Theodarus has the power to command a target in such a way he would be doing a simple action against his will before he knew it. Skill is limited by the following:
1) He has to KNOW the person. Not just read about him or something.... KNOW his past, his possible motivations, his behaviour, his mannerisms, etc....
2) Due to the lack of talent Theodarus has with this skill, he has a 30% success rate in most situations, and a 50% success rate in optimal conditions... (GM to decide which number to use)
3) Target has to be really close (5 paces away) to be able to feel the full weight of the words and be affected by it.
4) Deaf people are not affected by this skill.
5) Theo has to be really composed to shape his voice correctly (no panting, tiredness, etc)

Note: All 4 skills affect only the actions of the participants. Any feelings and/or "mind control" that occur will either be the victim's fault, or brought about indirectly (example: Pain => Cry, Torture => Submissive victim)

Oooh, ho ho. Nice character, very tricky. This is looking more and more fun. .

Alright, I got 4 characters, like I hoped! I`m going to start the RP, but if anyone wants to join, they are still free to! And please, ladies! We are severely lacking in the ladies dept.

You 4 are free to post your introduction posts! then we`ll get down to business. <p>---------------

Hey, Molo

I note you suddenly moved this into Gaera for some reason. And given its location as well as current event, This would have the Barian Miltary all over it like stink on a monkey.

You may want to reconsider a few things. I'd be willing to get you up to speed if you catch me on AIM. Tis an honest mistake, given your abscene and all. <p>

Indeed, the Barians would be all over this.

In a very bad way.

Also, it's unlikly that many people outside offworlders and select groups of people with access to space and time mages would even have a general concept of a space-time continuum, let alone an artifact with the very mention of it in the name. <p>

Erm... I think that, if agreeing to any of the contracts makes them suddenly more agreeable to the terms, and they are emotionally and thought-wise unable to consider breaking one of the contracts, then it probably falls under the grounds of mind-control. However, if it's a PHYSICAL thing that prevents them from disobeying the contracts (like sudden loss of motor functions), then I think it's not mind control. So, it's only mind control if the spell directly changes what or how the target thinks. <p>"There is great disorder under Heaven, and the situation is excellent."

I was thinking in the order of: "The guy was obviously angry, and straining against the command, trying to stop. But there he was, still hopping on the spot on one foot........."

Of course, the contracts themselves run the great risk of mind-control. Take this example:
TB:-"Love me"
Some girl-*blush and nods*
Kissing begins.....

hmm...... maybe I'll have to put in a few "limiters". Lets see what our GM has to say about it first..... <p>

Number one isn't mind control, it's body control. So, the guy will get revenge when you stop.

Number two is super-duper mind control.

Perhaps the contracts and agreements shouldn't be along the lines of "You shall think and feel this!" and more along the lines of "You shall perform this action!" dealie. And "Fall in Love" isn't an action. "Hop on one foot!" is. "Hop on one foot and enjoy it, damn it!" might be pushing it. <p>"There is great disorder under Heaven, and the situation is excellent."

I don't know. I'm just saying what I think, not correcting you. Honestly, you're probably in a better place to rule what is or is not mind control than I am. But I like pie, so there. <p>"There is great disorder under Heaven, and the situation is excellent."

Alright..... I guess that's that then.
Mr Molokidan, please change the character thread as needed: I have added the following into this thread's description:

"All 3 skills affect only the actions of the participants. Any feelings and/or "mind control" that occur will either be the victim's fault, or brought about indirectly (example: Pain => Cry, Torture => Submissive victim)" <p>

(( First post here, tell me if I should be like, posting a "Hi" thread or something Image ))

Name: Sophia DeRespe
Race: Human(Modified by magic)
Age: 27
Sex: Female
Physical Description: Rather tall(5'11"), black hair that goes a few inches past her shoulders, with eyes like diamonds. She weighs about 120 pounds and wears loose, deep purple robes. There are tears across the first layer of fabric all over the robes in the shape of runes, revealing the golden cloth within. She wears a silver and gold circlet on her head with various gems embedded in it. Her face is rather comely, but due to her height and weight, she is rather ungainly across rocks and such. The one truly outstanding feature about Sophia are her black-ish purple wings. Not normal, feathered wings, mind you, but more like bat's wings. This is a result of magical experimentation on her as a child, which I will go into in the background.

Background: Sophia is the child of a normal father and a sorceress mother. Her mother kept her, as both her mother and father felt a place where she could practice her gifts without being shunned was better for their daughter. About a year after Sophia's birth, her mother began working for the government to search magically for veins of ore and coal in the mountains near their city. They also took an interest in Sophia, and performed experiments on her without her mother's knowledge. The first side-effect of this were her eyes, the pupils of which were transmuted into diamonds, granting Sophia incredible eyesight and ensuring blindness and other eye problems would never befall her. Her mother saw this, but was not infuriated by the results, and let them continue their research. When trying to give Sophia an ability similar to a bat's echolocation, she grew her wings. Her mother was not pleased with this, and left the city for her husband's house in the country. Her mother schooled her in Ice magic. She is very talkative, but has a very dry sense of humor. Almost to the extent that some may think of her as detached and jaded.

Special Ability: Sophia is skilled with Ice magics and can freeze the air to create small ice structures or instruments.

Weapon of Choice: Rather proficient with a dagger, but she has no skills for it.

Skills:
Skill #1: Chilblain -- To activate this spell, Sophia speaks the conjuration and raises her arms to eye level, cause spikes of ice to form in a circle around the victim, dealing minor damage and holding them in place:
A) For 5 minutes, if Sophia does not look elsewhere.
B) Until Sophia makes a forceful downward motion with her arms, causing the spikes to lower.

Skill #2: Bitter Ice Blast -- Making a forward motion with her right arm, Sophia conjures several ice shards which fly toward the target and pierce the target, causing some damage and a painful shock from the freezing cold ice again flesh. The target must be in Sophia's line of sight, and the shards are not tracking.

Skill #3: Lesser Ice Genesis -- Holding her hands together, Sophia can freeze the air to create small ice instruments(scissors, knives, etc.). The shaping process takes about 2 minutes, and the object melts after 5 minutes.

EDIT: Got rid of the wormhole such-and-such.
EDIT2: Lesser Ice Genesis

Hey! I like your character, very very well-done.

Just one minor problem. Although wormhole magic is awesome, it has absolutely NOTHING to do with ice magic. And although that would be perfectly fine in any other RP, this one is centered around characters with "specialties," and developing those specialties, so. . .sorry, but just to make stuff work better, I have to ask you to get rid of the wormhole stuff.

Anyway, do you have an AIM name? as the RP is well underway, you can still enter fine, we'll just need to talk about a proper entrance. And make sure you've read (or at least skimmed) through the RP and basically know what's going on. Other than that, you're fine! We're glad to have you. (A girl....*cries* finally!!) <p>---------------

Is it me, or is "Conjure Ice Key" a really limited skill? After all, only when the party comes to a locked door will it be effective.

(Look who's talking, Theodarus would most likely not be able to find the time to write a Binding Contract...)

And the fact she would have to have a thief's training to be able to understand how lockpicking works...

Maybe she can change her skill to something like Item Creation, where keys are one of the miniture items that she can create. It makes much more sense that way, and there's the added fun of .....
"SNOWBALL FIGHT!!"
:) <p>

Yeah, Theo has a point there. The limitations and the way the spell works is fine, but instead of just a key only, we can make it conjure "Very small objects". (Within limited reason.) <p>---------------

Oooh! You could call it something like "Lesser Genesis", because that's a really cool name. Then, as time goes on, you could master higher levels of Genesis magic.

Then again, I just like the name "Genesis." <p>[---------------------------]

Done and done!

By the way, I removed the words "Ice" from the latter two spell names, because they sound cooler without it! <p>---------------

Motivaiton breakdown:

Unread postby wkz » Mon Oct 11, 2004 3:57 am

Alright guys. At this point Theodarus is passing around a notpad with a Binding Contract, basically acting like one of those annoying roadside petitioners/survey people. Just like to fill you in on his motives:

As he said earlier: "I like to test the waters, and manipulate people" (not an exact quote). And he's just trying to gather some people he can 'use' in the future. Not that he's some evil overlord who like some minions to throw away in the future (maybe...), but he knows his limitations (he + someone else in a clear-cut 1 vs 1 fight = dead Banjo) and is trying to patch it up (by getting a meat-shield from where he can hide behind and work his art of sowing chaos and suspicion...).

With the above said, Adral, while acting in character, probably made the smartest decision of all....

Skills?

Molo, you mentioned at one point that we'd learn new skills over time. I was just wondering if/when this was going to happen. <p>[---------------------------]

I know I'm technically not part of this RP, but I can't help but ask: wkz, are you familiar with Macc Maverick by any chance? <p>

Nevareh, you are well on your way to learning a new skill. (Which may be why you are in a fighting round. . .*hint hint*.) Basically, to learn a new skill, you have to develop one, first. You made one when you smashed through that wall. use it successfully, and I'll let you name it and add it to your character list. 'Tis as simple as that.

Edit: Now that I think about it, Nevareh, you DID pull off your move well, even though you accidentally crashed into a wall. In that case, name it and I'll add it to your list. <p>---------------

Nothing that's been updated in...a couple of years, at least. Just the whole contract thing and all reminded me of him. <p>
