Castles in the Sky: Myst-style RP recruitment.

Unread postby The Great Nevareh » Fri Oct 29, 2004 12:04 am

It appeared in the sky in the countryside of Doma, without warning.
And it sat there, inert.
Some people, hearing of this phenomenon, went to study it and found that it was almost impossible to glean anything about it, and no one knew why (though there was plenty of speculation!). People who tried to teleport there ended up... well, not there. People who tried to fly there through magic found that the winds didn't want them to come anywhere close to the island. Someone was planning on catapulting themselves up there, but they were dissuaded as to the fact that not only were their yaw calculations incorrect, but they would probably go splat if the succeeded, anyway.
Soon it drifted away, apparently driven to the south by winds blowing from the north.
No one was quite sure what it was doing there in the first place.
So, after much sitting around and speculation, some of the more well-off members of Doman society decided that it would be best if some people were sent via airship to investigate this island in the sky- Not many, since what was found there might need to be kept under wraps, aside from the fact that getting them there would require a lot of resources (Baron rarely if ever lends out an Airship). So, very descreetly, and very carefully, they began looking for adventurers who wouldn't mind exploring a strange artifact that no one knows much about while being completely cut off from civilization due to being several thousand feet above the ground.

I thought about this a bit, and I thought an exploration-style adventure would be fun, with no standard physical dangers, no known or overt enemies, just the characters and an area that needs its mysteries puzzled out. Before I start doing detailed work on the isle, though, I'd like to know if there's any interest in doing something like this.
Also, if it's entirely impossible to do something like this in a Gaeran setting, then I'll have to move it out of Gaera, which shouldn't be too hard to do.
[---------------------------]

What stopped the numerous Domans from exploring it and scanning it when it first came?

I imagine, given how varied and creative they can be, they they'd be able to unravel a lot about it before it left.
-------------------------------------

I think "out of Gaera" sort of messes up his idea. On that note, I don't think he said "Doma City", soit could very well have appeared above a small farming town or something.

'tis Ok for an RP, but this will be one RP where our upcoming GM will have to put MAJOR amounts of effort into it. More so than any other RP, as the only real thing of note are the puzzles.

Are you up to it, tGN?

wkz/Theo makes a good point. As a moderately-seasoned GM, (not just from RPGWW, either) I find nothing harder in an RP than to make tricky situations/puzzles for the players.

...but, that's because most of the time my players are smarter than I am. -_-;;
---------------

I've got several characters <s>stupid</s> heroic enough to do this. And I see nothing wrong with it being Gaeran.

Is this going to be a chat RP or a board RP? Because I kind of prefer board for this sort of thing myself.
-----

I'm not too shabby in terms of things like this- You have to remember that Myst was most likely much easier than what I'm going to throw out due to the limited number of locations you could go.
It would be board- Chat would make repetition a constant thing- people would always be trying to do the same thing over and over again since they didn't remember doing it the previous time.
Also, you've got goals which don't happen to happily coincide like in Myst- figuring out the mysteries of the island won't necessarily get you off of it, and vice versa.
Anyway, now I'm going to begin drafting the island in detail.
[---------------------------]

All right! This is going to be freestyle. Here is what I need:

Characters
Character inventories (what they are carrying on them.)

Here's the limit on characters- No one who requires magic to survive (like undead), nothing extraplanar, but everything else is fair game. Also, list any biologically-derived abilities they might have, like "I can fly 'cuz I've got wings" or "I can breathe underwater due to my gills!"
[---------------------------]

Molokidan
Biological Abilities- Due to being a sushijin, he has gills along from his armpit down, allowing him to breathe underwater. His ears and toes are also lightly finned. He is a very fast swimmer/runner.

Inventory-
Chopsticks: These are actually Molokidan's weapons, but in normal form, look like small silver chopsticks. He keeps them with him at all times, and are probably one of the only things he can't lose. They were the treasure of the Sushijin village
where he lived, and when a Sushijin holds them, they can transform into two mid-sized katanas.

Oranges and Pears: Molokidan keeps at least one orange and one pear on him at all times, in case he gets hungry. They're his two favorite fruits of all time.

Coin Purse: A cute coin purse shaped like an imp's head. He usually has no money in it, but keeps a note with his address on it because he usually forgets.

Clothing-
He wears a green vest/tunic combo, with a purple undershirt underneath. If the environment is cold, he'll bring along an olive green cloak with him. He also wears a dark purple bandanna.

Other Notes of Interest: An idiot.

Here's my character...

Damian Vaza: A tall, athletic Valthi male with pale skin, bright green eyes, and loose, slightly wavy black hair which barely reaches his shoulders. He usually wears a black trenchcoat. As a rather antisocial jerk, he is trying to remedy that a bit, though he's currently contemplating a deathwish. Why else rush into the great unknown?

Inventory: Two Valthi pistols, with ammunition.
A knife with a blackened blade.

He might be bringing along some supplies as well or something, unless the people giving the notices are giving provisions nad such as well.

All righty, I'll have to ask that those who have not previously posted characters and inventories and the like do so now.
I need to know what your character can do BIOLOGICALLY, as in not in a magically-augmented manner, but biologically.
I also need to know what your character would carry on them on said expedition.
So, if your character has wings and can fly, please say so. I don't need a flying speed, though.
If your character REQUIRES magic to live, then they can't do this for in-game reasons. This applies to magical items as well, though you can bring them if you like. Whether or not the items work (or do anything at all) is another story.
[---------------------------]

Very well!

Since this looks to be a somewhat long trip, Winfred will bring a pack containing lots of food, water and writing supplies. Also a standard dagger, a prop sword, a bottle of something flammable and matches. Likely he'll ask to borrow from Nevareh's gun collection, something along the lines of a shotgun; whether or not she lets him is up to you.

-He is capable of bench pressing a potato thirty times. Aww yeah.
-He can run a three minute mile... for about twenty seconds.
-I've mentioned before he can look like a woman convincingly.
-He is capable of throwing and changing his voice. Just hasn't done it in a long time.
-He is capable of hacking your computer and posting obscene things in your name when you take too long to GM. Be forewarned.
-He's a hobbyist-level mechanic who can take things apart, probably put them back together and with luck, figure out how they work in the meantime!
-He can steal candy from children without asking.
-He can die from poison. And just about anything else that kills normal people.
-Capable of going without sleep for a very long time with few ill effects. But he -likes- to sleep, so this rarely if ever comes into play.
-He scored 17 inches on the sit-and-reach flexibility test, a rating of "excellent."
-He can swallow swords. Any and all juvenile comments are to be directed to the wall. >:
-He has a good response time.
-He can hold a gun without it shaking too much. Fire it, too, and maybe not miss.
-He can breathe fire without using magic. All it takes is a bottle of something flammable and a match! He can do this without burning himself much, unlike most amateurs.

I think that's about it. Anything else?

Erm, that's more information than I really need- Your character's skill set isn't something I'm going to monitor closely. I meant along the lines of things people can't normally do, like survive without oxygen for days on end. I'm not going to look at one of your actions and say YOU NEVER SAID YOU CAN DO THAT THAT IS WRONG YOU FALL OUT OF THE SKY AND DIE THE END! I just care about what you're going to be bringing with you, as your inventories are VERY important.
And no, you can't bring one of everything.

That, and Nevareh would loan Winnie a gun, albeit one of her more common, more inexpensive (though expertly maintained) firearms, on the condition that he gives her a small (literally) share of his spoils. And she wouldn't let Winnie near one of her shotguns- not with HIS handshake. He'd break his arm pulling the trigger.
[---------------------------]

Chantelle, being a normal human, has nothing she can do biologically that's really strange.

However:
- She can use two hand axes in combat, though she's only average at them.
- She also uses a crossbow sometimes.
- She can cast spells that use various types of energies (fire, wind, cold, etc.) and usually get the type of energy she wanted.
- She can cast healing spells, though there's a small chance that it'll burn them with holy magic instead.
- She can simply use wild magic to create completely random effects, ranging from a rain of feathers to the opening of a portal of DOOM (though the last doesn't happen often). Sometimes, these things happen in addition or instead of her normal spell effects.
- She is not afraid of heights, and in fact, likes them a lot. Because of this, she has learned to climb most types of walls rather well.
- Because of the fact that her spells have blown up in her face before, she's become good at resisting spells.
- She is a good conversationalist, if you can keep her on one topic.
- And last, she occasionally, when casting her spells, undergoes severe random emotional changes. These seldom last long, though.

She will bring with her enough dried food and water for a week, some reading material, a compass, her axes and crossbow, and paper and pens for mapping.
-----
