Derrik watched Candice go, and then turned back to the captain. "Do you think it was a good idea to let her go alone?"

Tanake was about to speak, but Calvin snorted slightly.

"The dyke? You think she'd honestly risk one of the female crew?"

Tanake shot him a glare, but held her tongue.

"As Mr. Dartmann so succintly stated, I would hardly risk a member of the crew. I don't think the priest's intentions are anything but honorable, and I doubt there are any dangerous forms of wildlife in the area, or we would have seen evidence of them."

Jenni then spoke up, biting her lip.

"What would Mr. Yeran want with her, though?"

* * *

>It is not precisely of magic... in some locations, in some objects, the gods have placed their blessings. If the appropriate prayers and magic are used, the memories of the deities can be awakened. Please, take my hand.<

He held out his hand, smooth, green palm held upwards directly over the cairn. Yeran's gaze never left Candice's eyes.

Yeran began singing softly, sounds without meaning— just pure, drawn out musical notes which hung in the air, dying away after several minutes. Nothing was happening though. The faint breeze prickled at the hairs on Candice's neck. Several more long minutes passed, but Yeran's eyes were fixed on Candice's, until he finally broke contact, looking down at the stones. Her own gaze followed, and she could see the stones glowing a rippling blue.

Oddly enough, it felt completely natural, the cool light dancing over their hands, and Yeran's antenna and hair was floating slightly from his head, as if he were submersed in water. His priestly robes were doing likewise, and Candice realized her own clothing and hair was doing the same.

Again, though— it was impossible to feel startled, despite the strangeness. It was as though something holy was taking place, and she could feel like a cool, nurturing presence was surrounding her.

Then, a ghostly image was suspended above their hands; it flickered slightly, like a hologram, but with an ethereal aura to it that no machinery could produce. No more than a handspan in height, it showed in perfect miniature a slender, breathtakingly beautiful woman with skin the pale blue of a morning sky, and a long mass of curly green hair, with silver streaks. She wore a glistening dress, and a small shawl was half-carried on her elbows. However, there was a sense of distance— as Yeran had said, more of a memory of a presence than anything else.

>This— this is our lady Ylliana, goddess of the waters.<

The slightly translucent figure turned slightly, nodding to Yeran in blessing, then up at Candice. For a brief moment, huge, jewellike violet eyes filled her vision, and the woman's soft lips opened—

Then, the image suddenly flickered out, and the priest and the scout were in the twilight, the stones' glow gone. His hand was still holding hers, and his face seemed weary.

Sylavi could no longer hide her nervousness, her gaze turning to the path Yeran and Candice had taken, and then back to the captain and appearent leader, "Tanake." All the while she told Eduardo of her gods, seemingly trying to distract herself from her own thoughts.

> As you wish. K'lorn is described to us in the ancient texts as a muscular man with hair like falling snow, short but flaring slightly from him in a constant wind, his skin as white as the clouds of a calm day. His eyes are cold, blue as a glacier, and he is dipicted wearing a black outfit worn by those who practice the arts of physical combat, with white shoes which have curling toes, and a silver design of clouds stitched on it. According to the texts he favored using silver feathers, incredibly sharp as his weapon, which he was able to throw at his enemies with deadly accuracy. <

Sylavi's eyes had drifted towards Calvin as she began to describe this god, but the moment she met his eyes she turned away. Part of herself still feared retribution from this creature, and she continued on, trying to leave such fears behind for the moment.

>Yameli, The goddess of the sun and moon. She is known to us to be a slender woman, almost wraith-like, wearing veils of light and shadow. Beneath the shifting veils, nothing is visible of her skin, except for her face and hands. And even her face is covered with a veil, and her hair pinned under another veil. The veil across her face is half light, half shadow, creating a vivid contrast. What's visible of her skin is a soft peach color, like sunset. Her eyes brilliant purple, like what one mgiht catch in a sunset. She is said to wield no weapons. <

IM: Though her stunning beauty was probably enough to captivate a thousand men and even sway the wishes of a demon.

> Now of my patron god, Tristian, the fire god. He is said to be slender and extrodinarily lean, with an angular face and feral expression. His hair is a mass of flames, and his eyes are glowing orange.<

Her thoughts began to carry a feeling of definite enthusiasm and she briefly peeked at Tanake.

>His skin was dark brown , like mine almost, and he wore a loose, open-faced red vest, with golden trim and a symbol of a flame on the back. His leg garments orange, and he goes barefoot. His chosen weapon is a flaming blade.<

Her thoughts then seem to loose the feeling they briefly carried.

> Continuing on, we have Kami... goddess of earth and nature. Known to be a sturdily built female, with green skin and intertwined vines growing across her brown hair. She had round ears, despite that all the other gods ears ended in more of a point. Her eyes are brown as well, and she wore loose brown robes, with a simple belt. Her weapon of choice was a staff.<

Sylavi tilted her head slightly as she peered at the ears of some of the crew next to her.

> And at last I come to Ylliana,Goddess of water. She had blue skin, with long, curly green hair, which has silver streaks and wore a loose, glistening gown which sparkles like sunlight on water, with a small shawl that she usually half-carries on her elbows. She carried no weapons, and is believed to be considered the most beautiful of the goddesses.

Kyoko let out a large yawn as Sylavi went on about the gods. She was growing rather tired of all this talk. It was like she was at school and listening to a professor lecture her. She ran a hand through her hair gently.

"Aiyah.... " She let out a sigh and just sat there quietly not having anything to contribute.

Derrik absorbed all the information he got from the priest, and paid some attention to Sylavi's discorse on the gods. He sat quietly and mulled it over for some time. Then he returned to miming to himself, trying to get a better grasp on what he should be doing to communicate.

Liam scowled. This story merely confirmed his belief that these creatures were barbaric pagans, not that it needed any confirmation to begin with. However, the captain said they should be friendly, and damnit, he wasn't like that Japanese pilot wench...following orders had saved him quite a bit during the war, and he wasn't about to stop now.

He also couldn't deny that Derrik had the right idea. If they figured out how the natives did this so-called magic, perhaps they could figure out how to keep it from happening anywhere near themselves, which would no doubt save them from a world of difficulty.

Yeran slowly withdrew his hand from Candice's, seeming too tired for further talk before leading her back to the others.

* * *

Jenni was listening to the descriptions Sylavi was giving with visible delight, seeming to enjoy them more as a story than for any real information, unlike Eduardo, who was paying much more attention to details, noting how the crew might have been mistaken for gods.

Calvin glanced up at Candice and Yeran's return, then stood, stalking away without a word towards the river, sitting by it just out of earshot of the others, though still in view if one knew where to look.

Yeran bowed graciously to the others.

>I fear I am growing weary. I leave Sylavi in your care now, and wish you all a good night.<

With that, the priest went away into the gathering darkness.

Tanake glanced at Candice speculatively.

"So. What did he want?"

As her elder left Sylavi bowed, and when he was gone from sight she raised herslef up and loked in the direction of her temporary home. Glancing at Candice she gave her an inquisitive look.

Sylavi still could not grasp a word of what these "words" meant, however she could definitely conclude it was a question, and probably one she wished to ask herself. However she hesitated, she did not wish to be rude and interrupt their conversation.

'I honestly don't know what he really wanted with me. He took me back along the route I explored and showed me a "recording" of one of their gods. The goddess of water.'

Derrik nodded. "Could just be different tech. Oh, how I'd like to get a good look at the innards of that thing. If it's still running after all this time, it must be real stable. And their 'gods'... sound alot like another alien race with advanced technology. Captain," he looked over at Tanake, "permission to go investigate this alien holo device?"

Tanake nodded.

"Candice, please take Derrik back to the device."

Jenni chose that moment to speak up shyly. "May I go as well? I'd be interested in seeing it."

Again, the captain nodded.

Eduardo, meanwhile, was watching the affair with interest, before tugging at Sylavi's shoulder gently to reclaim her attention before signing at her.

'Where gods now?'

Tanake started, then grimaced apologetically.

"Sorry Candice, wasn't thinking. Sure. Just say when you're ready."

Jenni flushed slightly, then grabbed a fruit, munching into it quickly, although it seemed to be more to occupy the time than anything else.

Tanake switched her attention to Sylavi, rapidly signing 'Know the place of memory, of images of gods?' This was the closest she could come to communicating what she wanted.

Eduardo was leaning forward intently, and wheeled himself a bit closer to listen.

Tanake glanced from Candice to Sylavi, evidently weighing which she would prefer to attend to herself. This only lasted a moment before she called to Eduardo "Answer her questions. Find as much as you can."

The crippled doctor nodded, signing to Sylavi 'We wish to learn.'

Then the captain nodded to Candice. "I'd like to see this as well. Derrik, Jenni— come as well, since you expressed interest."

Jennivere was quick to swallow her food, scrambling to her feet.

Subject Change!

Derrik was deep in thought as he followed the party's scout over the terrain. He needed something to let his mind work on, and right now, there just weren't enough challenges in the engineering department. In fact, there were almost none at all in that department. Hopefully, the alien holographic device would prove interesting.

By now, the sun was completely down, although there was still enough light left for the small group to see the cairn of blue stones. The aura of sanctity was felt by all of them, although for Candice, it felt stronger than before, but also oddly... hollow.

Jenni looked at it, then impulsively picked a spray of nearby flowers, setting it at the base of the pile of stones as a sort of tribute.

Tanake pursed her lips. "Would it be possible for something, for some device to be cued by auditory sounds, within it?"

Jenni shrugged, kneeling in front of the stones.

"I don't know... it just feels good here. Sacred, I guess. Can any machine make that? Or do you think that their gods could be... well, real?"

Tanake shook her head. "Too farfetched. Of course, I'm a bit of an atheist, so my opinion's probably skewed," she added, with a slight grimace. Her left hand reached behind her, thumb pressing over the base of her spine as she winced slightly.

"Injuries from the Bug War," she said nonchalantly.

Jenni, meanwhile, was idly taking a few more flowers, small, delicate blue bell shapes with vibrant orange centers and long stems, plaiting them into a crown.

Eduardo pursed his lips, attention on Sylavi.

Every culture usually has demons, if it has gods...

'What... bad gods, have?' he asked, as Yeran hadn't taught them the official word for demons.

Tanake shrugged, grinning slightly to make light of it.

"Docs said I could get some synthetic skin grafts, which would make the area numb at least, but... call me old-fashioned. I'd rather not have my body sliced up too much, even for medical reasons."

Jenni glanced over, and shyly spoke up, although her fingers were still occupied with the wreath.

"Even if it could stop it from hurting...?"

Tanake's grin was decidedly crooked.

"You don't like girls, I don't like being sliced. We've got our own issues."

Derrik, in the mean time, was kneeling down by the area where Candice had indicated the hologram had appeared. He tried a few expirimental whistles, but didn't expect a reaction. His hands reached down and poked around, looking for some sort of an input/output device.

The pile of stones shifted slightly under his touch, but as far as Derrik could tell, it all seemed completely natural. No evidence of any sort of hardware could be found.

Jenni flushed slightly from Tanake's earlier comment, and glanced over at Derrik.

"We're going to put the stones back after we're finished, right?"
