>But the gods-<

Sylavi who was still in a semi-relaxed state while talking to Yeran, tensed slightly as the question was asked, then relaxed. She stared into his eyes for a moment.

>It depends what exactly you mean by watching, do you desire secrey, or openess? Do you wish for me to be a companion to them, or simply a watcher? I believe if you do desire openess, it might be best to send someone who has already had contact with them, and whom they have had contact with.<

She had the choice of continuing on with her studies, or being pulled into something else, who knows how long she would be keeping aneye on these people. INside she had already decided.

>I would welcome the chance to continue observing them whatever the case may be, to try to determine their intentions. However, if it is secretly, I am most-likely not the one who should accomplish this task.<

Tanake grimaced slightly. "I like what I've seen so far of this place, but I agree— we really should be trying to find a way out. I doubt our ship's going to be capable of flight, though— especially if we cannibalize the plasma for energy. But that doesn't mean we should go as soon as we can. After all, we can still try to learn more about the local race, and explore a bit. As Candice pointed out, that's our job."

After muttering something about their job not including making friends with green-skinned critters, Calvin spoke up.

"You know, there might be another ship somewhere that crashed onto this planet a long time ago. That could explain the alien's reaction to us. And apparently it also lifted off again— I'm making a lot of assumptions here, but if we could find where the first ship landed, we might be able to find some kind of help." Then he crossed his arms, having said his piece and now waiting for reactions.

"...slim chance, but better than none," admitted Tanake.

"...nothing like this planet was ever reported before, though," commented Eduardo, fingers gripping the armrests of his wheelchair. "So either the original scouts— assuming of course that there WERE others— didn't report it— which I doubt; they got lost in space or perished after the attempt— which seems a bit more likely— or they weren't human at all."

* * *

>I was planning on doing it openly anyway,< replied Yeran tranquilly. >Despite the male's earlier behaviour, I doubt we have any reason to expect unaggravated hostilities. And they would most likely include spying on them as aggravation. By all means present yourself as a companion to them— friends learn much more than mere observers.<

>For as long as they stay here, Sylavi. If possible, perhaps even quartering with them, starting tomorrow when you take lessons with them in the hand-language of the Myrria.<

>Go prepare yourself for tomorrow.<

* * *

Tanake frowned, processing that information.

"...maybe. Too many 'maybes', though. For now, let's just concentrate on the present before wondering about what happened before. Maybe we can ask more details about their gods later, but for now... we're doing the language lessons, and learning more about this world.

"But I think that's enough for today. Try to catch some rest, people."

* * *

So the afternoon of the next day found them taking language lessons from Yeran, who patiently explained things via telepathy before showing the signals. Tanake took notes as well, and turned out to have a knack for it. By evening, she was able to communicate in simple sentences, responding to Yeran's telepathy.

Jenni had a lesser affinity with it, and Eduardo and Calvin were also able to pick up a few 'words', although not at a high level of complexity.

Sylavi's essentials were taken with her, and Tanake allowed her to use Samuel's room. Jon's corpse was also given a decent burial.

When the lesson ended, Yeran lingered a bit to eat with them, and so all the crew, plus Sylavi and Yeran, were there.

(OOC: ...in other words, char interaction time now, folks. Keep in mind the language barriers, though. I leave each individual's grasp of the sign language up to them. So POST.)

"I can take an engine apart and put it back together in my sleep, but I can't master a damn sign language system... what's wrong with this picture?" Derrik was standing by himself in a corner, trying to make some sense out of what he had just learned. About all he had down so far was 'yes' and 'no'. After a moment he sighed and gave it up and wandered over to the captain.

"Ma'am," he began, "I'd like to talk to you about something, if you have the time."

Ryoko had gotten down the majority of the lesson, and understood it fairly well. "Well this certainly is turning out to be a adventure!" She stated to no one exactly, just letting out how she felt about this so far.

Edmund had not done very well on learning the sign language of the aliens, but he could manage a few simple words and phrases. While he ate, he looked to Yeran from time to time, wondering about the alien religion.

When Eyalla 'spoke' her concerns about her company Edmund just shook his head, offered a small smile and tried to sign out, 'Not really'.

Her next question however, he knew he couldn't handle, for reasons of it not being his place to answer and because he had no idea how to answer.

Tanake looked up at Derrik, and nodded slightly. The light caught the small golden studs on her earlobes, reflecting them for a brief moment before she spoke.

"What do you need?"

Jenni, meanwhile, was attempting to answer Sylavi, although she turned bright pink every time she fumbled a word.

'Think stay. Learn. Later— explore. Learn,' she signed quickly. 'Need more? Ask her.' She gestured at Tanake.

Candice had also shown a knack for the sign language, even though she hadn't been a particularly keen participant in the lesson. She turned to Sylavi and concurred with Jenni.

'I want to explore.'

Liam idly munched on some of the supposedly edible food from this planet. Today's snack was a peculiar fruit, one that possessed a taste similar to oranges. As far as the sign language was concerned, Liam was having a bit of trouble with it. He had the verbs down perfectly fine, as they were logically similar to motions used in the military ro give out orders when voices could not be heard. However, that was about it, as he was sadly deficient in the areas of nouns, prepositions, adverbs, adjectives, and even articles.

Sylavi hadn't gotten too many words of the sign language down herself, nouns were the easiest for her, and she got the easy verbs, however she had trouble with most everything else.

>To explore, To see what is beyond the hills and valleys.<

She said this to make sure she had understood, jut in case she made a msitake.

Sylavi took a bite of the orange-tasing fruit as she said this.

"Well, I was serrious about investigating the alien's odd abilities, but I can't get enough of their 'language' down to ask any constructive questions about it. I was wondering if you could ask one of the more fluent people to put in a few questions about it."

Tanake nodded slightly. "Either myself, Candice, or Kyoko would be best for that, then. Or possibly Jenni. What questions in particular did you mean to ask?"

* * *

Yeran turned his benevolent gaze towards Edmund, feelers swaying slightly.

>What is it like to travel in the voids between stars?< he queried, being careful to use the hand signals as well as telepathy to reinforce the lesson.

Derrik ticked them off his fingers. "First of all, what was it. They have to have some explanation for it, although I have my doubts as to how scientific it is. Second, how much effort does it take to learn? And can only speciffic people do it, or can anyone learn? That's enough to start with, I think."

>It must be,< Yeran concurred tranquilly. >Exploration and the thirst to discover are driving forces among our kind, and I fail to see why it should not be the same for yours.<

Eduardo chuckled slightly, signalling a brief, affirmative 'Yes.'

Tanake, meanwhile, was starting to serve as translator for Derrik, and caught Yeran's attention with a brief cough before signalling rapidly, 'When trap in ship, Sylavi help. Great fire, burst. What cause it?'

Yeran's feelers cocked themselves slightly.

>Magic, of course.<

OMG MAGIK?

Kyokos eyes lit up quickly upon hearing Yeran say it was, 'magic'. She quickly turned around in her chair and faced him.

"Magic?! You mean like from those cartoon shows back home where they could set things on fire by saying a few words and making some hand gestures!?" She let out a squeal of delight. "I wanna learn! I wanna burn things!"

Tanake gave Kyoko the sharp command to shush, then translated Derrik's question.

Yeran was surprisingly calm throughout Kyoko's outburst.

>...such an eager child,< he observed mildly.

It could be observed that Jenni was trying to bite back giggles, not all together successful.

>And while anyone can learn the theories of magic, which are rather simple, not everyone has the innate ability to perform magic. Less than a quarter of the Eyalla or Myrmia posess even the simple ability of lighting a candle or other minor magics. Less than one in ten of those who have the power are of any real power whatsoever. And even less— much less— are truly potent mages.<

Calvin was now focussing his absolute attention upon the 'conversation' between Derrik and Yeran, with Tanake as translator. His face had a slightly calculating expression, and the captain noted it before asking Yeran 'Teach magic, then?'

>It's simple, really. Only those blessed by the gods or otherwise touched by them possess the reservoirs of energy which power magic. They regenerate, but every person has only a limited amount of it. The limit varies, though, although most people have none or a very small amount. Sylavi and I have been blessed in that respect.<

>Of course, in order to channel the energy, one must learn how to spin it out and form 'patterns' with it, if you will. The more complex the pattern for the spell, the more difficult. In fact, the main training for magic just requires learning how to do the patterns quickly and without mistake. This is actually is more difficult than it appears, but not much, as the specific patterns required vary from person to person.... most would find it instinctive, though, with an instructor standing by to help control any excess.<

With a shrug, the priest added >Of course, it only works if the person has been blessed by the gods. I see no such talent in this group.< He spread his arms slightly, gesturing to each member of the crew as if to make it clearer. When he glanced at Calvin, though, his eyes narrowed slightly, almost imperceptibly brief before he noticed Candice.

His expression immediately changed, and he stood, walking to the scout's side as if he had just realized something.

>Would my lady permit me to speak to her in private?<

* * *

Eduardo, meanwhile, was good-naturedly attempting communication with Sylavi.

'What gods like?'

Re: OMG MAGIK?

Being called "blessed" caused Sylavi to lower her head, trying to hide her blushing. Her feelers also moving to cover her face. In a waqy she was thankful that she had a reasonto blush and hide her other thoughts. She had become nervous when they asked to learn the art of magic. If they were demons, and needed help in training their powers, and were simply using them, who knows what might happen.

Sylavi raised her head slightly when she heard that none of these people had the potential... then he had called the female named, "Candice" to have a private chat. Why would he want to talk to her... and privately? What was Yeran hiding? She had never known Yeran to do such things...

Sylavi was broguht back to reality with the question about the gods.

>The gods are not "like" anything specifically. Well they are all good-willed beings. They are K'lorn, God of the wind and sky. Yameli, Goddess of the sun and moon. Tristian, God of fire. Kami, Goddess of the earth and nature. Ylliana, Goddess of water. I can go into detail, if you wish?<

Yeran nodded, inclining his head slightly before beginning to walk, following the stream calmly, as Candice followed. The path they were taking was basically retracing the way that the scout had gone the other day, Candice remembered, to where the odd cairn had been.

As it proved, her memory was correct, although as it was a different time now, the air was cooler, and different forms of wildlife could be seen. Some odd fernlike plants were also abundant, and when she watched them out the corner of her eye, it seemed as though they were unfurling slowly.

The blue stones glistened slightly in the fading light, although a flicker of color in the depths of the top stone seemed for a brief moment to make it glow— a trick of the light, perhaps.
