Of course, the man did not listen. And having a sufficient head start on Sayra, she knew she was going to have to do some running to catch up to him.

As he dashes away, a few loose coins jingle out of his pocket; it seems he has quite a few in there...

Kaze watched as the pickpocket made his escape. What the lady thought of him was he own buisness, he knew a thief when he spotted one. And furthermore, he hated thieves, and had ever since the magical teleporter he had spent six months working on had been stolen mere days before it's completion. Being something of a loose cannon, he immidiately took justice into his own hands.
As the man ran towards him he raised his right hand and extended his first and third fingers, the second and fourth were pressed tightly against his palm. Without warning, he spoke the following words: "Heaven's light from beyond the horizons, bind the limbs of my enemy. Paralysis Shock!"
With the casting of the spell, small tendrils of electricity lept up from the ground and coursed through the miscreant's body. Whether it had the desired affect or not, however...

The Lightning crackles, but fails to take hold. Kaze can sense some kind of light magic deflecting the Paralysis, helping hold it at bay.

(OOC: Everyone who's acting, act. I'll GM it all the next time I post. If you aren't acting, make a post letting me know. For the sake of convenience, I will rule that you can all see the guy from your various posistions; as he is pretty visible.)

Kaze's father, turning from his discussion looked at Kaze in surprise. "What do you think you're doing, young man?"
Kaze, however, acted with his usual abruptness, and began to move along a parallel course, already trying to figure out how to bring the annoying bug down. He refused to let such a lowly thing as a thief out do him. He had no way of directly removing the thieve's Light Block, as he was thinking of it, and even he knew better than to use offensive magic in this crowded area. But maybe...
"Shadows of all, take the illusion of form, take the image I see in my mind, O Shadow Doppleganger!"
Charging from the crowd into the open area that was quickly forming, as it always will around a commotion in a crowd, was a pair Argent Guards, directly cutting off the man's path. A third came up from Kaze's side, so the thieve's retreat was blocked in three directions: from the back, there was the irritated victim, in the front and to his left Argent Guards with drawn weapons. However, if one looked closely they would note that the Guards seemed to waver, as if standing in great heat. Also, their features were fairly indistinct, and they all looked the same, much like the Argent Guard Kaze had talked to earlier.
It was doubtful the thief would notice this, but Kaze didn't have the time or strength to create further dopplegangers that far away without giving the illusion away completely.

~What the Hell....isn't it possible to get some reading in?~

Talos looked up from his book, to see the one man ganged up on by three supposed gaurds, and Kaze.

~Well, that's something new.~

Talos closed his book, and began to walk over to the small group.

"Hello! What seems to be the problem?"

thief? stabber!

Postby Besyanteo » Mon Dec 23, 2002 1:45 pm

Well, Ardiss had found out the hard way that if he was going to leave his name at the palace, he was going to have to wait till the festival was over.
He had been heading back through the crowd, when a flurry of irrregular movement caught his attention. As he drew a little closer to that area, he could see three guards, standing over something. If nothing else, this should be interesting.
He headed closer.

Aoki bowed even lower to the Guru. "Very well. I thank you for your time, and I shall seek out the Guru of Reason."

He was promptly swept away by a sudden surge of human traffic through the area, of which he was somewhat relieved, as it saved him the dilemma of A) Taking the chance of accidentally backing into someone, or B) Turning his back on the Guru of Time.

Noting the massive disturbance and the obvious implication that the man was a thief, he turned and raised his hands.

The least he could do was aid the guards. As he pointed his hands toward the thief, he shifted them suddenly to about six feet in front of the pickpocket (relative to his position, it's a small angle change) and released his spell.

(Earth Wall, six feet in front of the pickpocket.)

Magic = SPEED UP!!

Postby Deeum » Tue Dec 24, 2002 6:32 am

Sayra was growing frustrated with this thief, not to mention she could have been possibly looted back there. She grew weary of trying to catch him by foot. Within that momment, her muscles jolted and twiched and her speed increased damn near instantly, gaining enough speed to hopefully catch her target.

Kumenil waited for the guru to reply, but before an answer was given he was pushed back, nearly falling over the elder man. When he managed to turn around he saw a person disappearing in the crowds, running, while the young woman he'd been talking to earlier was following him/her.

Kumenil did a quick bow to the guru, mumbled some excuse and then set off after the thief, trying to catch him/her. But when he saw the young woman increase her speed remarkable he slowed down a bit. The girl seemed to contain enough magic power to fend for herself, and after all it was rather rude to just leave the guru. He quickly headed back to the old man, bowing again when he arrived.

"Forgive me, master guru, for my hasty decision of running after that thief, but I believed I would be of use."

And now, the virtues of uncoordination.

Postby Uncle Pervy » Wed Dec 25, 2002 4:50 am

The Thief reacted quickly to the circumstances. He dashed right, just as a wall raised up to block the path that he was taking, as it cut off the shadowy Argent Guard.

Talos suddenly finds himself directly in the thief's path. Then he finds himself on the ground, as the man pushes past him.

Sayra gains on him, compensating for the sudden turn beautifully, then finds a fallen scholar in between herself and the thief. She could either go around him and lose a little time, or try to vault over him.

All the while, the thief is running lat top speed toward the edge of the square, and toward the flooded section of Kajar near it, passing near Ardiss.

****

"It is not a problem," Mura replies, leaning on his cane, "No, not a problem. It is quite alright. Yes."

Then fixing an eye on Kumenil, he asks, "Is there anything else that you need? Is anything else required?"

Kaze growled in frustration as outside interference prevented his illusions from doing their job. He allowed the shadows to fade out, as their presence was no longer required. On his left shoulder, his ferret made alarmed noises, clearly distraught over the sudden movements and speaking on Kaze's part. Kaze, however, was determined to at least see this event out. He did his best to keep pace with the retreating thief while remaining in the crowd for as long as possible. He fell a fair distance behind, due to both his inferior speed, lesser endurance, and greater difficulty in maneuvering through the crowd. As the thief approached Ardiss, he had already fallen about twenty feet behind, but could still see the action as it unfolded.

NO NEED FOR RUNNING!

Postby Besyanteo » Thu Dec 26, 2002 3:48 pm

He noted that a figure was running at him, very quickly, from the direction of the guards. Well, there are only a few explanations here, and they all boil down to someone running from the law.

And Ardiss believed that the law was usually right.

Rather than start out by targetting a spell at a fast moving target in the middle of a large group of people, he stuck his leg out very suddenly in the theif's path as he was just about to run by, a self assured smirk alighting his features.

The thief doesn't seem to notice Ardiss' foot until it is too late. He cries out as he stumbles, and falls to the ground. He rolls, coins tumbling from his pockets.

Sayra quickly closes the distance, as the thief comes to his feet. She also notes a few Argent Guardsmen coming through the crowd.

He swears to himself, then shouts, "Light!"

A brilliant flash of light suddenly flares from the thief's hands, overwhelming Sayra's vision, as well as Ardiss and everyone else's. When the light clears, some ten seconds later, the thief is gone. Amidst the general chaos and confusion in the wake of the sudden spell and so many being temporarily blinded, it is hard to tell which way he went. The Argent Guard set to work trying to calm the crowd.

However, both Sayra and Adriss see a dropped coin, to the north of their position.

He just avoided cursing as the light filled his vision. And when he could see again, he cursed anyway. A breif glance gave him a small clue, a single coin to the north, and he headed in that direction with a purpose, looking in everywhere for the Thief whom he'd gotten a very good look at before everyone had been blinded.

So, our next question: What will Ardiss do to him when should he find him? A case of the fever seemed in order. He smirked at that thought, and quickened his pace.

Kaze, on observing that the thief had managed to get away, sighed and turned his attention back to his ferret, who was in a high state of agitation after the large flash of light. Kaze merely added the irritation of his pet to the long list of greivences he had against thieves, and began walking back towards his father.

Kumenil, who had been watching the event while waiting for a reply from the guru, saw the young woman he'd been discussing with notice something on the ground. He looked back at the guru, to find that the old man was talking to someone else.

"Just typical..." Kumenil thought for himself."Very well, then he won't notice me leaving..." Kumenil did a quick bow and then bolted after Sayra. The thief wasn't caught, apparently, and that blinding flash proved the man was a Zealan, and not just a surface dweller.

Sayra moves toward the coin, and scoops it up easily. It is a Gold Noble, a relatively valuable coin; people don't just drop those.

She also catches sight of a few more, leading toward the mouth of an alley outside the square.

****

Kumenil catches up with the noblewoman easily enough, and traces her line of sight to the fallen coins.

****

Ardiss, searching around, finds no sign of the thief anywhere in the crowd.

****

Jet mewled hungrily, prompting Kaili to reach into her pocket for one of the little treats she keeps for her fluffy companion. In doing so, she notices that her coin purse is gone...

****

As the others were not truly pursuing so much as searching about, Talos finds himself catching up to them rather quickly.

Ardiss was not a happy mage.

No one made a fool of him, he made fools of them. This lawless street rat should be no exception.

He continued to search, for the moment heedless of the others, listen for cries of things like "my purse!" or "Stop! Thief!" or maybe just a "Hey, watch it buddy!".

Besides... if he couldn't catch one lousy thief, how could he defend the guru...
The thought was sobering, and he paid more attention to detail as he searched.

IM: Well, that was interesting.

Of course, Aoki had little attachment to the matter of the thief; simply another human being forced to live against the wishes of society.

Watch how a society treats those who get in its way. It says a lot about the culture in of itself.

Beginning to search for the Guru of Reason as recommended, he mulled over the turn of events.

IM: And yet, I could easily have been he, had our fates been but slightly different.

Kumenil opened his mouth to say something, then suddenly remembered his own purse... which had been... cut.

Kumenil sighed, trying to focus. This could of course be coincidence, but heck, now this was personal.

"You've found the trail, good. Now if we'll just head after this trail." Kumenil sighed, looked up the general direction of the coins and started running down it. He did not accept thievery in this new world they'd made themselves, and damned if the little thief was getting away with it.

Breaking free of the crowd, Sayra and Kumenil follow the trail to the alley. It is narrow, and rather muddy from all the run-off water. It also has a set of very fresh footprints going through that mud. This trail terminates near the other end of the alley, where the thief rests against a wall, breathing heavily.

As he glances over toward the two shadows that darken the alley, he exclaims, "Shit!" Then he begins to run again.

****

Talos finds himself meeting a thick spot in the crowd. As he tries to work himself through, He catches eye of a woman with a cat trying to do the same, as well as a Frustrated-looking young man with a pet ferret. It'll take them a moment to get past the crowd.

****

Aoki finds the Guru of Reason as she says some terse words to another woman, panicking after the light burst. The woman cringes a little at the Guru's tone, and seems to settle a bit.

The then Guru of Reason looks over at the architect, and eyes his critically. "Well, at least you aren't scared stupid." she says after a moment.

Kumenil frowned. "Oh no, you don't." he whispered under his breath. He knew full and well that the thief could probably try something again, and that meant the only real way to catch him would be knocking him out...
