"Unless this thing has some specific reason for going after Kumo, I expect he'll never see hide nor hair of it," Kelne said, "Still, I can go and check it out if you like. I'm not the guest of honour, so nobody's going to be particularly bothered if I melt away."

DW: Post or suffer.

Unread postby Endesu » Mon Jun 26, 2006 10:48 am

It wouldn't take long for Greg to wander his way into a wide open section of the city where the sun had a good amount of space to radiantly shine.

As he stepped into the light, he would find that his shadow had literally detached from his body and stayed well away from the all-exposing light.

For all intents and purposes, he had just lost his shadow, as bizarre as that was. His shadow stayed motionless in the shadowier part of the town where it had detached.

There was further astral energy about in the shadow that remained behind.

***

End sighed. "Could ya, Kelne? Might just be worrisome of me, but I wanna make sure that he didn't get lost or anything. Lemme know if you manage to find him, huh?"

Kelne, upon emerging from the ranch, would likely note that the flow of people had ceased. Presumably the crisis had ended, or perhaps the mass hysteria had simply ceased. Whatever the case, there was no one to follow to the scene of the apparent crime. It would be simple enough to head directly into town and look, though. Likely, anything of the calibur of the crime's source would be simple enough to locate.

***

Kumo found himself deeper in the forest at this point, far, far away from his original starting point. This wasn't quite as bad as having a cat woman threaten to gut him, but it was somewhat aggravating. This in mind, the Moogle decided to turn back and attempt to reverse his steps.

Several moments later, he found that this wasn't going to work terribly well.

Continuing on for a brief bit until he can get to a part of this area with a few more people, Greg feigns a glance downwards for an unrelated reason. 'Surprised' at the complete lack of one, he turns back towards the shadowy area where it remains, staring straight at it while standing in the middle of the small crowd.

Kelne decided to take the direct approach - Work his way back to where they'd left Kumo and track him down from there, enquiring whether passers-by had seen a young moogle as necessary. One thing about moogles - they were distinctive, and thus tended to register in peoples' minds.

It wouldn't take long for Greg to put himself amidst a few other people in the area simply doing their business. As he stood there, none of the people really noticed Greg, from what he could tell; for all intents and purposes, he was simply a man staring into the distance for some reason or another.

His shadow, meanwhile, remained still, exactly as he had 'left' it.

The astral energy that he had sensed from the shadow earlier seemingly culminated further, but gave no visible sign of such.

***

It wouldn't take long for Kelne to make his way back to where Kumo had originally parted company with the group, as he had diverged through a fairly prominent portion of the town. As Kelne followed the general path he had seen the Moogle take out, he inquired to random passerbys in as direct a fashion as he could manage if they had seen a Moogle.

Some folk responded in the positive. Though they hadn't much focused on the Moogle beyond a passing glance, most gave the impression that he had gone off in the general direction of the forest just beyond Doma, where Sorune lived and where much trouble happened on a regular basis.

From what Kelne could discern, these people would have no reason to lie, so it seemed reasonable enough to follow the moogle's supposed trail into the thick of it.

***

Speaking of Kumo, he was still neck deep in the forest. Try as he might, he couldn't find any sort of convenient exit anywhere. It was as if the forest itself had overgrown while he was exploring it, so as to destroy former paths and create entirely new ones.

... whatever the case, he would be looking for an exit for some time now.

Kingdom Hearts: Enigmatic Man Battle

Unread postby Endesu » Wed Jun 28, 2006 9:34 am

Greg couldn't see it making any active motions as he moved down the street.

However, as soon as he left the relative safeness of the light and submerged himself in the next relatively shady area that popped up, he saw his detached shadow suddenly seem to submerge into the ground.

And then everything seemed to freeze... except for him. The people that were around him suddenly halted and froze completely. The clouds in the sky had ceased to move. Even the wind had ceased. All that remained was any noise he made.

And but a moment later, he would feel a swift slashing at the back of his legs... nothing overly painful, perhaps only meant to surprise him. A quick look back would confirm that his shadow, obviously in his shape, had risen out of the ground behind him and had sword ready.

Greg's attention is caught by the sudden lack of motion, though it's once more diverted upon the feel of the slash, causing him to jump noticably as he spins to face his newly-formed doppelganger a bit gape-mouthed

"Aah! Th' hell?"

He draws his sword as he tries to get a better view on what exactly is going on.

(Detect Strong Feelings on the shadow creature. Also, could I get a current HP/MP for Greg?)

As noted, the other Greg looked exactly like him, beyond the fact that there was no color beyond black and no actual clothings on the apparent double. Even the blade was dark, a sort of "shadow" of his own blade.

Although, astrally, the energy emnating from the shadow was now immense and seemed to be trying to match his own, Greg's spell failed to detect any feelings whatsoever. Either this was a being who lacked any emotions whatsoever... or wasn't even a living creature of any sort.

As for the area around him, it had indeed frozen, perhaps due to some sort of magical spell.

Whatever the case, the shadow did not pause - instead, it began to charge at Greg, blade swinging even quicker than before!

(Going to do my best to keep to the PS stats while doing the actual battles in freestyle. Hooray, needless difficulty!

Greg
HP: 90/91 - one point of damage due to the sneak attack
MP: 66/74 - due to the usage of Detect Strong Emotions)

Greg swings his own sword up, in an attempt at blocking the swift attack, and begins backing towards the lighted area from before, blocking the strikes of his double as best he can.

For the most part, the double, while aggressive, certainly wasn't stronger than Greg. This led to the shadow's slashes being blocked by Greg's own defensive sword swings.

A sort of pattern begin to emerge as Greg began to back away towards the well-lit area. During this time, the shadow's attacks increased in frequency, but still failed to break through.

In what might have been interepreted as annoyance, the shadow pulled its arms far back behind itself and then brought the blade back down at a particularly forward angle upon Greg's own with increased force.

A sort of explosion of force emnated from the shadow's blade and jerked into Greg's own with a sudden boom, effectively knocking him off his feet and sending him flying hard enough to clear the well-lit area and land in yet another shaded area.

(Greg: 88/91 -2 HP due to being knocked about a bit)

Wonderful. He was going to wind up tracking Kumo all the way back to the farm. Just the way to spend his day. Mind you, it was odd he hadn't run into Kumo along the way.

Possibly the kid had been accosted by Fae or something. On the other hand, it was also entirely possible that End's fears were not without basis, and the youngster was in the process of doing something stupid.

Sighing, Kelne headed into the woods, checking for signs of passage as he went and keeping an eye out for frothing lunatics with eerie magical powers. Or, in fact, anyone, since it was often difficult to tell frothing loonies just by lookig at them.

The shadow submerged into the ground and then unsubmerged directly in front of Greg, the darkness shedding from its form and revealing a detailed duplicate of Greg, right down to the last stitch of fabric.

It swiftly pointed an arm towards Greg and mumbled something thorougly incomprehensible.

A moment later, the wound(s) on the back of Greg's legs began to bleed violently, due to the shadow apparently having a blade of equal severity.

(No damage just yet)

***

As Kelne proceeded in pursuit of the trail and on the spoken word of the people, he ended up eventually leaving the city and walking deep into the thick of the forest.

He had perhaps a moment of peace before he could hear the loud, violent tromping of a figure charging towards him. Turning to the source of the sound would reveal some sort of man just barely missing Kelne with a grotesquely large axe of some sort.

A quick glance at the man would reveal him to be a fairly broad, muscular type, dressed in a set of ragged clothes that barely fit his form. His hair and the color of his eyes seemed to shift from moment to moment, creating a veritable rainbow of colors within his face.

His teeth were suspiciously pointy, and the tip of his ears followed suit... Kelne may have been right on the money on keeping an eye out for the 'frothing lunatics' part.

He wouldn't have much time to make sarcastic commentary, however... the man swiftly jumped back and began to charge at Kelne once more.

Pulling in a sharp breath when he feels the wounding enchantment take hold, Greg slashes forth against his assailant, taking stock of the situation around him and trying to come up with a plan.

IM: Damn it, that backfired pretty bad. Well, let's show him wha' happens when you try t' trick a trickster.

(Greg's looking for anything that his prankster-like personality could use against this shadow guy to help him recover his edge. Bags of flour, sacks of feathers, jars of lard, pints of lamp oil, anything of that nature.)

The slash took the shadow by surprise, and most definitely struck him, but cumulative/additional damage was cancelled out by some sort of curious rebounding effect the shadow apparently held within its 'skin'.

(24 HP damage to Shadow)

A quick look around the immediate area revealed a large number of items that could possibly be used to prank and/or stall the enemy.

They included:
a few flower pots (small one close by, on a window ledge; one just behind the shadow, further distance)
a pitcher of water and a shovelful of dirt (located just by a small window-side garden on a close building a short distance behind him)
a duck, suspiciously out of place (loaded with feathers, amidst the small number of people within the well lit area, very close to Greg)

There wasn't as much as he would've liked, but there wasn't a large amount of time to check thoroughly. There was also no guarantee any of it would work.

In the meantime, the Shadow hung back where it stood and swung its blade out towards Greg. The blade swiftly transformed into a long red lance of some sort, and when directed towards him, slashed Greg for a good bit of damage, but not as much as it could've, due to the distance and any defense Greg may have put up at the last moment. It was almost as if Greg was beying toyed with...

(-15 HP damage to Greg.
HP: 73/91. No bleeding damage yet.)

IM: Hmm. Disappointing sele...heh. Let's see if we can't delay him a bit. If this works, this'll be great.

Greg begins backing up towards the pitcher and shovel, and begins hunting through what mind the shadow possesses, looking for that transformative ability of his.

(Browse Mental Spellbook for said ability.)

The pitcher and the shovel drew closer to Greg, though the duck drew further away.

(-8 MP.
MP: 58/74)

Although the shadow had no specific name for it, Greg located the shadow's transformation ability easily enough. Although the details of it weren't easily classifiable, either, due to the shadow's bizarre mind structure, he could glean the necessary details.

MP Cost: 30
Rank: Apparently fairly high; no way of telling
Trigger possible?: Possible, though likely risky
Details: Summons a good deal of shadow-related darkness to both cover and uncover the target whenever the caster wishes. When summoned to cover, submerges and enhances the body in darkness and provides both an attack and defense booster. However, ineffective under intense light.
When unsummoned, the body returns to normal.

From what Greg could discern, the ability would be possible but would eat up a good deal of magical energy and would submerge him in the same darkness that shadow itself could effortlessly utilise. This also had its own, obvious risk factor.

In the meantime, the shadow performed a weak slash with the same extended red blade as it swiftly ran past him. Once again, weaker than it could've been. He would have to act quickly and decisively.

(-5 HP to Greg.
68/91 HP. Bleeding damage will begin soon.)

The intent behind Greg's plan is slightly different, however, as he attempts to trigger it, transforming that lance of his into a very large and angry ferret with a taste for the faces of Shadow things.

Whether it succeeds or not, he continues backing up, positioning himself within grabbing distance of the pitcher and shovel.

(-30 MP to Greg.
MP: 28/74)

The spell triggered.

The red blade/lance the shadow had swiftly transformed into a red ferret of some sort.

And it began to bite the shadow's arm.

The shadow was, again, somewhat surprised and momentairly halted in his attack by the ferret, though this likely wouldn't last long, as it was already trying to seize the ferret with both hands.

(-1 HP to Shadow due to sudden ferret bite)

This obviously left the shadow open to attack.

Having placed himself in position, he grabs the pitcher, flinging it towards the shadow thing's face as he struggles with the enraged weasel. If he gets on target and the creature is appropriately slashed/moistened, he follows up with grabbing the shovel, and sending its load of dirt along the same path, hopefully blinding the creature a bit, as well as making those facial wounds sting nastily.

(This'll probably have to be across two rounds, I'm assuming, but that's fine with me.)

Having been distracted by the weasel, the pitcher of water managed to hit the shadow's face dead-on, breaking into pieces and simultaneously soaking him. The weasel, unperturbed by the assault, scrabbled to the arm trying to pull it off and sank its fangs into that arm instead.

The shadow stumbled back and received a slap of dirt in the face, causing it to stumble back.
(-1 for Weasel, -3 for water/breakage, -1 for dirt. -5 HP total)

The shadow, if it had emotion, would likely be growing increasingly frustrated at this point. Stumbling back further, it managed to finally grab the weasel with a hand and squeeze it into submission, swiftly reforming the weasel back into a blade. It swiftly slammed the blade into the ground and sent a wave of shadow energy swiftly skidding through the ground, unperturbed by the light, and into Greg, knocking him back slightly and shocking him at the same time.

(-15 HP for Shadow damage, -1 HP for knockback, -1 HP for sustained bleeding damage. -17 HP total.
51/94 HP.)

The shadow halted its attack, at least for the time being, and seemed to swing the lance up in a defensive position over itself. Any of Greg's attacks made during this time, until it decided to halt its defense, would deal less harm than before, unsurprisingly.

A quick attack by Greg manages to get some damage in despite the defense put up by the shadow, and forces it back enough to fall under the ledge with said flowerpot.

Greg continues to press on the shadow, keeping him against the wall, and keeping with upward blows smacking into the ledge when possible, hoping that even with the enchantment surrounding the area the shadow slamming into the walls combined with Greg's own efforts will be enough to plummet it down upon the being's head.

The shadow stumbled back and slammed into the wall behind him, shaking the wall and the ledge above enough to bring the flower pot smashing down onto the shadow's head.

(-10 HP for additional attack, -5 HP for flowerpot)

The shadow, perhaps taken aback, seemed somewhat weakened and surprised by the additional attack. It submerged into the ground once more and reemerged some further distance from Greg, bringing the blade into the air and reforming it into what appeared to be a claymore with a series of vicious blue and red tips at its base. Even as it did so, though, it appeared to be wavering a bit as it stood. Perhaps one or two additional attacks would finish it?

However, it wasted no time in worrying about this possibility.
In a rush of movement, it ran towards Greg and smashed the violently claymore into him.

(-25 HP for claymore attack. -1 additional HP for bleeding.

HP: 25/94.)

Even with his wounds, Greg can't help but give out a snicker or two at the events as they've unfolded. He makes a single strike against the shadow and dashes off towards the nearest alley, crouching down at its entrance and waiting for the shadow to follow; with luck, he'll be upset enough to miss him and trip. If not, he's still got the chance for a quick surprise slash to his legs.

The struck was dealt, though a chunk of the damage was blocked by the shadow in a moment of timing (-15 HP) and the shadow stumbled back further, arms swinging about violently as it did so.

Greg's ducking into the alley caused the shadow to give chase with a seemingly mindless rush, giving Greg ample opportunity to stick out a leg/sword/similar object and trip the shadow.

The shadow did indeed trip over Greg's chosen object and was sent skidding into the alleyway face-first with a violent groaning noise. (-5 HP for sudden trip/fall)

The shadow brought itself to stand, wavering and wrenching its hands into fists, perhaps almost annoyed by how well Greg's trickery seemed to be working.

It turned towards him and rather than attacking with its weapon, took a running stance, went into a burst of speed, and KICKED HIM IN THE FACE, sending him flying back out of the alleyway.

(-18 HP for kick/inevitable fall. -1 HP for bleeding.
-19 HP total.
6/94 HP. Greg is in the red zone.)

(29 HP restored.
HP: 35/91)

Greg's status was restored a bit, but he was still fairly damaged from the battle. Even as he scrambled to get away, the shadow seemed to persist in angrily pursuing him, making random, violent swipes with the claymore the closer it got.

It once again slammed its weapon to the ground as it came closer and closer towards him, this time creating a wave of purple energy that swiftly traveled towards him and seemed to seep into his wounds.

Almost immediately, he could feel the effects of a poison taking effect and working away at his system.

(-10 HP for wave, -5 HP for poison impact, -1 HP for bleeding.

(Corrected, sorry 'bout that.)

One last direct attack caught it while still off guard, somewhat blinded, and in an apparent rushing rage, thus dealing full slashing damage (-29 HP).

It fell back, form rumbling, and its weapon faded away. The shadow seemed to dissolve into the ground, and there, in its place, immediately appeared a woman of some sort. The clothes were some sort of bizarre set of ninja togs loosely tied together over the entire body by a series of black straps. The face was that, apparently, of some sort of cat-person... a Nekonian?... bearing a half-moon tattoo on the forehead.

Although Greg would not recognize the appearance, he would immediately recognize, were he to check astrally or mentally, that this was the same mysterious being earlier who had set him up when he had attempted a Spell Trigger.

This being looked somewhat surprised, likely due to his managing to dispatch the shadow, but was nonetheless furious. He/she hissed and made a series of jumps backwards, directing her/himself away from Greg's position. "This isn't the end!"

Scanning the woman as she escapes, he discovers exactly that.

IM: ...Wow...surprised I came away from that, th' way Jikuro was talkin'. Either I'm better than she thought, or that cat's worse.

Quite exhausted by the fight, he binds up the wounds on his legs as best he can, and waves to the likely-confused crowd, hobbling to the nearest alchemist he knows of; friendly sort he's stopped in at for the occasional scheme. The purpose of which has been entirely unbeknownst to the shopkeep, of course.

(This piece of background was completely BSed on the spot, so I don't actually have any background details on this last-minute NPC. Just some guy that pretends to not know why Greg wants the stuff he has him brew up. :O)

A dark portal of some sort opened up just as the woman made her last jump backwards, disappearing entirely as Greg made a scan on her. From what he could glean, she used quite a bit of the power of shadow, as a good deal of it was emnating from her even post-battle.

Her words came ringing back to him telepathically as she disappeared; "Next time, my shadow won't give you the chance to pull any of your bullshit!"

And, indeed, everything had unfrozen by the end of the battle, leaving Greg in a rather curious position. One curious person was taking a look at the shattered remains of their pitcher, while another was looking for the shovel. No one had investigated the broken flower pot as of yet, but someone would likely be along to wonder about it. The duck had, by now, mysteriously left the premises.

Before he left, Greg would note that the girl had dropped something, perhaps while disappearing through the portal. More likely than not, he would have picked it up while on his way to his neighborhood's 'friendly' alchemist.

Presuming he had struck a deal with the chap and had gotten something of worth from him, he would have a chance to check out the item that had been dropped; it appeared to be a somewhat smooth piece of paper, folded over.

Feeling much better now that he's got something to take that poison out of his system, Greg takes a closer look at that folded piece of paper; perhaps a note of some kind left for him, but hopefully, some sort of clue instead.

(Not sure how much the poison antidote'd cost from him, but I'm guessing he'll be able to afford it out of the payment. If not, I'll edit this, and what the heck are they putting in antidotes nowadays, platinum?)

(Given that Idran knows the chap and that he has a good bundle of gil in addition to whatever he started out with, he should have no problems affording it.)

The piece of paper, unfolded, appeared to actually be a black & white picture of some sort.

The picture was quite detailed, far more than any drawing he had ever seen before.

From left to right, there appeared to be:
A Moogle decked out in what appeared to be Dragoon armor.
An Angelic woman of some sort.
A man in a jacket, rapier drawn, with a lizard tail trailing behind him.
Another man in a different sort of jacket, buffered by a few figures with shovels, sporting quite a cynical and annoyed look on his mug.
A man in a large cloak of some sort.
Another man, in what appeared to be armor of some sort with a curious cannon-like attachment on one of his arms.
Another Moogle, smaller than the first on the photo. There appeared to be an 'X' mark over him.
A Dragonish man, wearing some sort of elaborate cape.
A man and woman who appeared completely identical to the Angelic woman and the man with the cynical expression.
What appeared to be yet another figure standing in a cloak just to the right of the second cynical man.
And, finally, what looked like a floating orb with one eye.

There was also a smaller note, with what appeared to be a smaller set of figures at the extreme right, noting them with a question mark.
One was what appeared to be the Queen of Doma herself.
The next was the Queen's sister.
Just after came a man in a bold coat and a fairly strapping figure, who Greg may or may not recognize as a particular hero of the Doman War.
Finally came an Angelic girl, considerably smaller than the first sported by the picture.

A few additional lines below the general group, printed in a language Greg could not interpret, seemed to note something.

IM: Huh...a hit list? But...no, the guy that was killed doesn't look like th' guy with an X, whatever he is...guess I'll be stopping in at Jikuro's again earlier than she thought.

Stopping at home and actually grabbing the rest of his If nothing further stops him, Greg proceeds to finally get home and grab the rest of his equipment. He then makes his way back to Jikuro, giving a sharp rap on her door.

The day was decreasing at this point; it was clearly afternoon by now. Not too much longer until dark.

There was no response to Greg's rapping as he knocked on the door. A long, eerie moment passed, and, ultimately, nothing happened. No angry woman opening the door in a flash.

There was no sign up announcing that she was out and/or was unavailable to come to the door, either.

So something was up.

Opening the door carefully, he calls within.

"Hey, Jikuro! You here?"

The door would swing open to reveal that the place had been trashed. The table and bed had been smashed. The books and assorted papers had apparently been torn to bits and flung everywhere.

A sudden shuffling in a corner would reveal a bloody heap; said heap was apparently Jikuro, clothes torn, bearing many bloody wounds and in a limp position. Her weapon, a gun of some sort, lay several feet away and had apparently been shattered into pieces.

Just over her stood what appeared to be a shadow of herself, similar to what Greg had faced not too long ago. It was wavering as if it, too, had been weakened, but it looked as if it had managed to get in the final blow, and it now looked as if it were about to deal the killing blow with what appeared to be a set of rather vicious looking claws.

It paid no notice to Greg.
