'The ultimate question', he whispered to himself, so quietly that even Kilra's heightened sense of hearing was strained a little to pick it up, 'is "When do you think you have the right to judge?"'

Louder now, he was addressing Kilra.

'When I said you had what it took to be a warden I was speaking the truth. If ever you feel that you need some direction in life, contact me. I'll arrange a meeting with Him.' His tone spoke of a great reverence and respect for "Him", whoever he was.

'And now...we have let ourselves be distracted. I do not think these men came across us by chance. They were sent to delay us. Ayra is in great trouble...'

Kilra brushed aside her doubts, reminding herself that her internal conflicts would have to wait until she had done her self appointed duty.

"Xas. The pursuit must continue. Such a fiend can not be allowed to escape, especially with an innocent life at stake."

"Yeah enough of this alright, off to that...um...town mentioned earlier else an innocent child is gonna get it...just leave the woman here...." Seeing her fallen comrades slain around her when she wakes up will be much worse than death... Aya thought to herself, "If she comes after us again she'll be defeated in battle..."

Ara had already started walking away from the group silently, "I don't give a sh!t what happens to that dumb broad, I just want my lil sis back damnit."

Janice was already far off, walking with a long and strongly determined pace. She couldn't help but think about what was happening to her dear little friend, Ayra, and she knew that she would never forgive herself if she were to let the hunter get away with it.

She yelled to the others without ceasing, nor looking back at them. "What, now you're gonna just let the hunter take Ayra? Move it already!"

Her tail twitched, and she slowed her pace, letting the others catch up to her. She spoke to Ara once she was by her side. "Sorry I took so long, Ara... I got caught up with some of my... fellow kin while searching for Ayra's scent. I'm just glad i managed to catch up." Her facial features softened slightly, allowing her face to be recognised of that of a girl.

Point of infomation!

Unread postby Justice Augustus » Sat May 25, 2002 3:29 pm

(OOC - Actually I think it was the Roman war tactic that whenever they had a battle they would always leave one alive and free, to tell any others what had happened. It had great psychological impact, especially on the one left alive.)

Only about another 25 miles to go until I reach my destination. I better keep running, they are faster than me, and according to my master they've just finished mopping up those hired fodder I left back before Turo. That means that if they go full speed after me they'll overtake me about 30 minutes before I reach my destination. Luckily I don't think they have endurance potions, so they'll probably have to rest for half an hour or so.

Kraken jogged along after everyone else counting his loot (Occ:If there was any it would really help to know SS) he had started huffing and puffing a little earlier than usual. Between wheezes he said, "you know, being a kinda mega rich queen couldn't you buy us horses or something at the next stop, we'd be able to cover ground alot fast that way."

Arrival

Unread postby ChancellorSmartz » Sun May 26, 2002 1:19 pm

Xander just got out of the forest. He was still scratching his arms from the poison ivy.

"Thank god, I'm finally out! Now to find my bounty..."

Then he finally noticed some dead guys lying on the field in front of him. They were pretty beaten up, and recently too.

"Woo boy, these guys sure got their asses kicked. Better mind my own business then-*squish*...What the-?"

He stepped on somebody's face by accident. His boot was covered by blood that squirted out of the guy's nostril. But the closer he looked at the face, the more puzzled he became. Where have I seen this man before? thought Xander. Then a surprised look came upon his face. He quickly pulled out the warrrent of Johan he kept in his coat. The man he just stepped on was Johan himself.

"...Dammit. Just PERFECT. The guy is dead now so now I can't turn him in for the reward...but wait! If he was killed, the guys who did him in must have a purpose. Otherwise they wouldn't have killed him and turned him in for a reward. Since these guys were killed so recently, they must have not gone so far..."

He then went in the direction of the nearest town, since it's the closest place for the party to go to.

Aftermath...

Unread postby Justice Augustus » Sun May 26, 2002 4:02 pm

All of the mercenaries were wearing leather armour, witht he exception of their leader who had a chain mail shirt as well. Their respective weapons, plus a few daggers, were also obvious loot. Johan also had the gems that the Huntsman had paid him with, and after scrounging through the other's pockets one could find about 65 gil. The female warrior also had a gold chain around her neck.

'@#%$!'

Blaze began sprinting torwards Turo, grinding his teeth together as he inspected the wound in his arm. The arrow had passed straight through the flesh...

The man has a point, I need to find a mount, bred for speed and endurance...

When he was passing through the town he slowed his pace and looked around for a stable.

Turo wasn't a small town, and it did have a stable, situated right by the southern gate through which the party was entering (the battle was about 15 mins outside Turo). There were 13 horses and a donkey in the stable, but none of them locked like a royal charger. However they weren't farm horses, and the best could probably put up a very good pace.

"Hmm..." Aya glanced about, "As much as I hate to say this..." she growled angrily, "We're probably going to have to take some sort of rest...."

"Ah screw that, I can go on for hours!" Ara grumbled.

"You maybe, but what about everyone else sis? Be reasonable, you were wounded during that last battle too..."

Ara sighed, "Yeah but..." she looked off into the distance, "A piece of me is out there and in trouble....it's a lil hard for me to rest..."

"Hey you! You on the horse! What in the nine hells dya think you're doing?" A man, slightly over middle age by his grey hairs, of large girth waddled out from behind a desk by the door to the stables. "Those things aint free ya know! Ya gotta pay! Get off 'im until I see some gold!"

Blaze walked the horse out of the stable, talking as he went.

'I am one of the Queen's guard, on a mission to save her Majesty's sister. The Queen herself will no doubt be through that door in a matter of minutes to get herself a horse. I can assure you that you will be reimbursed for your troubles.'

"What?" Janice was infuriated by Aya's suggestion. "What the hell are you say-..." Janice realised that she was being unreasonable, and that the blood was getting to her head.

She took a deep breath, then went on.

"Sorry. I just don't really think it is that necessary to rest... I mean, Kilra's fine, you two are ok now," she gestured towards Ara and Aya, "and so's that other guy, whatever his name is..." She was referring to Krak. "Though, if you are tired, Aya, then I would rather we have a fully capable group, instead of one disabled member." Janice was being as altruistic as ever, her three large scars showing up as broadly as daylight as she waved her arms around. She thought for a while. "Is it because of some lingering injury? I could try to heal it for you... Or... Something..."

>_> Horses...

Unread postby Jak Snide » Mon May 27, 2002 9:33 am

Kilra would have said about the queen being lazy, hardly considering the battle much of an effort. However, she was too busy keeping her eye on the horses. She'd only seem them once before, and she wasn't comfortable with them at all.

"Do we really have to ride these things?" she asked nervously, not wishing to go anywhere near them.

Before the man could reply Blaze spurred the horse into a gallop as it turned into the street outside. He was going to leave the others behind, he knew - but he didn't want there to be any chance of this hunter getting away with Ayra. He blamed himself for her capture - he should have been more alert.

With these thoughts going through his mind, he brought the horse to a fast speed which he thought it could maintain for some time without being rested, and made for the other side of Turo and the hills beyond.

"Hey!" Janice yelled at the guard. "Where are you going?!?!" She turned to Ara and Aya, obviously not expecting an answer. "We have to go with him!"

She started off, changing into a wolf as she took her first strides. After a moment, she stopped. Telepathically, she told the group, "Come on, we can't fall back like this! Hop onto a horse and let's go!" She was confused, being very anxious to follow, but she could not leave them behind so readily. Then again, Ayra's safety could depend on her decision, and again, she probably stood no chance against the hunter by herself.

Janice, although at a distance, could sense Kilra's nervousness, and she ran up to the horse that Kilra was approaching, and barked at it suddenly.

Probably to Kilra's surprise, the horse was not frightened at Janice's sudden approach, but instead, the horse bent over onto its knees, as though waiting for Kilra to mount. Janice barked to the other horses, and three of them promptly trotted out and bent over, majestically, one next to the other.

Janice resumed telepathy. "Come on everyone! I asked them to help us. You can rest assured, Kilra, they won't try anything sudden." She spun round at those words, and sped off, stopping again at a distance.

Kilra warily approached the horse, still not sure of its docile nature. When she realised that it wasn't actually going to try something, she slowly mounted it, trying to remember how it had been ridden the only time she had seen horses before this.

With some difficulty, she guided the steed out onto the open plains, Janices orders helping a great deal.

IM: "Right...I *think* I've got the hang of this."

She made her mount trot in a circle, just to get a proper feel for the reins, smiling triumphantly as she did.

"Okay, I'm ready here."

"Aw, damnit..." Aya grumbled unhappily, "The guard ran away...screw resting, let's just go..." she nodded to the stableman, smirking a little. Heh heh, being queen has it's perks...

Ara mounted the horse uneasily, muttering a few things, in fact, talking to it. Hey can you just be really fast, and no funny business this is my first time....

Aya climbed on another horse, "Whoah, steady...gah, I don't know how to ride one of these things!"

"Just tap it on the sides and he'll go!" Ara called back.

"Okay...." she nudged the horse, which reared a bit before galloping off into the distance, "WHOOOHOOO! I'M DOING IT! YAH!"

>.>;; "I just hope she knows how to stop...." she nudged her horse and took off after Aya.

Kraken meanwhile had been busily searching the stables and had found a powerful black gelding. He leaped into the saddle with a practiced ease achieved from years of being a "lazy bugger" and cantered off after Blaze passing dangerously close to Kilra laughing as he went. Anyone who knew anything about horses would be able to see quite clearly that Kraken had no technique and had never been taught how to ride but his confidence came from experience and a suicidal attitude.

Janice was constantly up ahead of the party, making sure that none of their horses got out of control. She made them keep together and not get too close, either, except for Kraken's, which was as stubborn as a mule.

The group soon gained up on Blaze and Kraken again, yet they were still a great deal behind, since their horses weren't weak either.

And so the heros cantered on, with nothing on their minds other than what they were planning to do to the inhumane monster that could kidnap such a sweet and innocent girl like Ayra, with the exception of Kraken who was wondering just how he could get the saddle to stop poking him in lower areas which he did not like to be poked in. After what seemed like ages of seeing the scenery fly past the Riva border came closer and closer. At the same time the Huntsman's poison was starting to wear off in Ayra's system, and by her telepathy and Janice's nose they discovered that he had vered off the track to the left, towards a small range of hills.

Without changing the horse's pace, Blaze changed direction torwards the hills, now keeping a more wary eye out - they had already been ambushed once. He was still wounded, and though he had bound it as best he could, he didn't think he would last much more of that sort of thing.

It will be five minutes until you are ready, master?...Very well, I am your strong right arm...and I shall not give in until I can fight no more!

The Huntsman slung his rifle from around his shoulder and into his hands. running his fingers delicately and smoothly, caressing the sleek, silver, metal rifle he muttered under his breath a small good luck charm, and then slowly slid a bullet into the awaiting chamber with easy and pleasure.

"Let them come, their death will mean nothing to me, for they shall be recieved with nothing but the cold, dark, empty embrace of oblivion."

Xander arrived at the stables, tired and panting. He then noticed the stable manager a bit tiffed and sweating. He slowly went up to him.

"Er...hey mister? Have you noticed any stange people stop by here lately?"

"Strange?" he replied. "That's an understatement. About 6 guys came here, the strangest looking bunch. One was some guy who ran off with one of my horses, another was some blue girl, a guy counting some loot, a werewolf girl, and 2 ladies with dragony features!"

Xander was startled at the description. "Geez man...no wonder they beat those guys earlier. They sound pretty tough."

"I wasn't done! Get this...one of the dragon girls is the Queen of Doma! And the other looked almost exactly like her! It's weird I tells ya..."

"A queen? This must be serious if it involves royalty...Say do you know where they went?"

"Sure do. Just follow the horse tracks over there." He pointed in the general direction of the party. "And why do you care anyways? I'd stay out of it if I were you. They looked pretty darn agitated at something..."

"Mister...I make it my business, okay?" Xander started to follow the freshly made tracks, but then he stopped and turned around. "Uh...can I take a horse? I really don't want to run after them again, and I'll pay."

"...*sigh* Sure."

And so, he RODE after the party, hoping he will get some answes.
