Phoenix turned to Pervy. "I have no maps, so I cannot gain your trust that way. I understand how you must feel, so I shall show you this instead." She closed her eyes for a moment, and then a transformation occured. Two thin, blue wings erupted from her back, tearing the tight shirt she wore. Two dull grey horns appeared to spring forth from her blonde hair. She looked at Pervy.

"I am Phoenix, the leader of the Children of Doma. I am a dragonhalf. My mother was killed twenty years ago, and my father died protecting her. Men, show them who you are."

The others removed masks, and other plastic shapings, revealing who they were. One human was really an elf, another was a nekojin wearing a convicing mask. Still another had cat ears like the Captain himself. There was only one real human among them.

"Is this proof sufficient?"

Children of Doma.... this is getting really complicated.

Zukath turned toward Nagan and Pervy. "We may as well fess up, guys. There's really no way around it."

Unless they already told the truth and didn't say anything....

Looking back at Phoenix, Zukath replied, "....I think that's enough truth right there."

In truth, it didn't prove a thing. He had seen the police in Inustan use weapons that were outlawed to the common people. And this could easily be the same thing. Silently, he wanted to kick Zukath for being dense enough to be drawn in.

Still...

"We ain't mages," he says. 'But I'll give ye th' benefit o' a doubt. Th' hell do ye want?"

Nagan kicked Pervy's shin.
"They're not gonna fall for something that stupid...grab the damn flashbangs! You DID remember the flashbangs, right?"

He stared at Zukath.

"OH, FOR ALTHENA'S SAKE, YOU'RE WORSE AT THIS SUBTLE BUSINESS THAN _I_ AM!"

Phoenix simply stared. "What proof would be sufficient?" She sighed. "Nobody trusts anybody anymore. If that damn Relti had never taken over..." she trailed off.

Zukath glared evilly at Nagan.

"Subtlety won't work at this point. You apparently haven't got a spark of perception in that mind of yours, do you, Nagan?"

"Look, fact o' th' matter tis this," Pervy says, looking at Phoenix. "We ain't locals. And there's a lotta dumb shit goin' 'bout that can get a bloke done in real easy. That town down th' fuckin' road's proof o' that.

"And quite bloody frankly, someone willin' t' kill their own damned people like that over a suspicion tis more than willin' t' scare up some secret police t' trick folks. An' I've seen this shit a'fore.

"Ye want me t' trust ye, start talkin'. Ye folks take gil. That means ye know 'bout Doma. So start there."

Phoenix sighed. "Doma...there isn't much to tell about it. It fell a while ago, and after that, pretty much all the world fell. If I remember correctly, the queen was a dragon, and that didn't sit well with some people. But that's all I can remember. We have a history encyclopedia back at base, that knows more than I."

Zukath completely ignored Nagan at this point. It was hopeless dealing with him.

What was concerning him more was what he had just heard. Doma falling... the queen was a dragon... this meant only one thing to Zukath.

He bowed his head down completely, and closed his eyes, putting his hands over them. He most definitely looked troubled.

This.... this can't be!... this can't be the end of Doma.... we CAN'T be in the future.....

Nagan would like the solve the puzzle.

Postby Banjooie » Sun Mar 23, 2003 1:50 am

Nagan blinked.
"I've got it, guys. Everyone, look. I've figured it out. I think.

Right, we're HERE. And we're not in Gaera. Because Pervy isn't in Gaera, he's not protecting the castle. They aren't protecting Aya nearly as well as they could be. Riva probably took up arms and took over Doma. Since Riva's in turmoil as it is, Nekonia and Inustan probably joined in on it all. We probably from there had a huge war, and Nekonia and Inustan took over a great deal of the world. Humans are probably rare because of these wars, which is why we get so much respect. Meanwhile, magic would be outlawed because of how thoroughly Domans used it. Thus, the technology would be more advanced than the magic, which means that that...thing was essentially a giant exploding arrow launched from a very big crossbow. I'm assuming they're still going to use some magics to detect magics, which are probably automatically triggered. Which in my mind means what we need to do first is find out where the arrows come from, get there, and use enough magic that it blows itself up. Once we've got that down, we can handle the King himself, and get ourselves the hell back. Granted, the entire thing won't happen once we're done, but it's something to do. Everyone got that?"

Alash rubbed his temples. This was getting far too confusing for him now. "Okay, so let me get this straight... you said that Doma. It Fell. Around the time you were born. And there was a Dragon for a Queen? Okay, so let's get to it, then. How old ARE you?"

Time travel. Kelne absolutely hated time travel. "How long since the fall of Doma?" He asked simply. "And can the prevarication, you lot. People who reduce entire towns to ashes to get rid of a few mages don't go in for subtle schemes."

Not that this meant he would trust their would-be allies without question...

Zukath glared back at Nagan, shaking his head for a few moments. The mage had COMPLETELY missed the point, in Zukath's eyes at least.

But rather than say anything, he kept his silence, wondering just HOW long it would take for the others to truly realize what was going on.

Phoenix thought for a second. "I don't know exactly how old I am. I figure I'm around forty or so, but I can't tell. You see, I was born in 1325 AT, but the year right now is 37 RE. So, I don't know the conversion." She shrugged. "Listen, I have more information at base. Will you come with us?"

Zukath was hoping for this. He looked at the others he had been travelling with.

"Listen. This is a risk we have to take here. This may be our only chance."

Then Zukath turned to Phoenix. "I'm coming, at the very least."

He would be damned before he admitted that much to them without a good show of trust.

"Yes yes, I know that the queen was a Dragon all her life... that's not the point." Alash peered at Phoenix, wondering how far he should let this go before bailing out. "On the OTHER hand, the POINT is that we're gettin thrown into someone else's war in what I THINK is the future. I'd like to know that I can still get home somehow, ya know?"

Phoenix nodded. "Rick, get out the pods."

Rick nodded, and walked into a back room. He emerged in a second or two, holding a circular platform that looked extremely familiar to the others. He placed it on the ground, and hit a switch, causing it to hum to life.

"This platform will bring us to the base. It's the only way to get in, so we protect it well." She nodded, and her troops began walking onto it, one by one. With a flash, each one disappeared. She waited after the last one entered. "You first. I don't want to walk on to find out that nobody followed me."

He stepped onto the platform.

Zukath was a bit uneasy. This brought back bad memories of the teleporter that had caused this mess...

Nevertheless, Zukath stepped onto the platform after Nagan... hopefully was normally teleported this time.

Nagan and Zukath found themselves in a large underground bunker. This place was strange, though, in the amount of technology that was being displayed. The bunker was obviously large, with many rooms. However, the strange thing was that nobody walked from room to room. There were people sitting in strange contraptions, one with wheels. They actually moved in these strange vehicles from room to room. Several others were looking at a screen...that had moving pictures on it. It was like magic.

The soldiers from before stood nearby. "Welcome to our base, otherworlders," the elven one said.

"Very well." There was a distinct trace of niggling doubt, but the woman's own people had used the portal first. Not that that precluded treachery, of course, but it was the best chance of getting answers.

Kelne stepped onto the portal decisively, fighting down the usual voice of Impending Doom.

Zukath was simply, utterly awestricken at what was inside the bunker. He knew little about technology at all, and this made him realize he had been missing a lot. Especially since he had grown up in a sort of backward society... no need for past regrets now.

He took a step forward to admire everything around him. He then muttered, "So this is what I've been missing...."

Kelne looked around with interest. He had experience with this sort of technology level, although he didn't understand its inner workings anywhere near as well as he might have liked. It was certainly a far cry from the outside world.

They were just awaiting Pervy and Phoenix, by the looks.

Pervy arrived to the same sight as the others, and Phoenix arrived behind him. "Welcome. Now, I believe you'll want to see our encyclopedia, correct?" Her voice was calm.

"And sir...that is no magic. There is no magic in this world, don't you understand? You are the only mages that EXIST. This is technology. And it suits us well."

Zukath realized he'd been figured out. But there was no time for that, really, as something far more important beckoned. Something that could change his world forever if he was unable to correct it.

He let the others handle things once again. Something else had nagged him once again... particularly about the missile he had seen yesterday. How HAD they gotten that much gunpowder into something that small?

Phoenix nodded, then snapped her fingers, causing a soldier to walk off. "Well, you see, magic is inherently more powerful than technology. I did some research into this field, and I see that if there was a mage strong enough, he alone could destroy a city, in less than an hour. That missle was made by at least a thousand people, and it took at least a month to make it. So, weighing the possibilities, you can carry out more destruction in a day. than they could do in a month."

She waited, as the soldier arrived again, in one of those strange wheeled contraptions. She got into the seat next to the driver, but there was still enough room for all of the others. There were three rows of two seats behind Phoenix. "Come on, get in. This is faster than walking."
