Juliet's eyes turn yellow as she snarls at Sam. "You can't STOP HER."

"Juliet! Concentrate! You gotta...I dunno what's happening to you, but you gotta not let it get to you! We are gonna be fine, I promise, okay? I promise! You just...you needa let Enzo help you...you can't get better if Enzo doesn't help you."

He grabs her hands, holding on even if she tries to pull free or something. "We're your brothers, an'...an' brothers and sisters protect each other, so we're not gonna let anyone hurt any of us! But you gotta let us help so that we can do that. Just...try thinking about being you! Think about stuff you like that Byrd doesn't!"

"I'm not going to waste my time feeling bad about what stupid people think," Emily said flatly, "What you're doing is giving them evidence for their prejudices. Before they've even had a chance to articulate them. You're going to get otherwise good people swept up by hysteria, and I won't have it!" She glared at Viral, looking very angry indeed, "We see in others what we are ourselves, Viral. All that prejudice and stupidity? That's just you, and the future's going to roll over you like a steamroller if you don't get out of its way."

Sod any kind of common cause with Viral. She could look out for herself. She seemed to think she was the strongest of all Wunderkind, let her prove it against the newcomer.

Herald...herald...

While the others were focused on Viral, the newcomer had grabbed Silvie's attention. She stared up at her, half in fear, half in awe, and realized something: they had seen something like her before.

"Hey!" she shouted up at the sky. "You're the herald, aren't you!"

"Okay, the Herald is coming. Message received. Off you go now," Emily said, waving a negligent hand at Sin. It was difficult to take her the least bit seriously, given her proclaimed role. Viral wasn't all that far behind, though she was at least supposedly working for herself, and could probably do a lot of damage in her delusions.

Everyone except Sam and Enzo:

Sin glares down at Emmy. "The gilded throne approaches! Show your respect!"

On queue, there's a horrendous noise of groaning metal, as something seems to step atop the buildings. A giant metal abomination mobilized on countless metal tentacles of all sizes rises over the rooftops of the mall, the appendages bending and flowing in ways metal just shouldn't. There is, indeed, a throne on the thing, with a woman sitting on it. The entire device seems to kneel, allowing the woman to step off, onto the street only a few yards from Viral.

The woman seems plain enough. Long dark hair, glasses, pale skin, professional skirt and sweater, with nice shoes and an overcoat. She cups her chin, looking the Wunderkind over.

"It's not nice to be mean to Sin that way." She says. "Though I realize she's just contributing to your problem right now. So many children loitering about in their underpants- Do your parents know where you are?"

Sam:

Juliet's emerging claws begin to dig into Sam's shoulders, as her metal body groans and begins to change. "You can't stop her! Nothing can st..stop...Meee!"

"...Juliet, you hafta...you don't wanna hurt us, I know, and Byrd doesn't wanna hurt us either, and...and you can't let Viral make you do that! It..." Stammering, he tries to gather his thoughts, to figure out something he could say or do to keep the hacking from working. Losing focus with everything going on, and with his worry for Juliet, he starts to ramble, speaking a good deal faster than normal.

"...Um...okay, Juliet...okay, maybe you can't fight it, but...but maybe you can help Byrd! You're a medic, and...and Viral's trying to hurt Byrd, she's trying to make her go crazy! You...you needa help her...maybe you can't fight the change, but...but don't go away like normal! Stay, and...so you can help fix her! That...you can help, you can do that, it's what you're good at doing! I know you're scared, but...but when stuff happens and you're nervous about it, you gotta just...you gotta do your job, don't think and just...and just do what you're supposed to do, and then you can't be nervous! So just try and think that you gotta fix her, and that's all that matters, and fix her from inside!"

"Oh, come on," Emily said, having crossed into territory were she wasn't going to take anybody seriously, regardless of their appearance, "She's basically shouting from the rooftops that The-End-of-the-World-Is-Nigh! Say, if you're speaking on Sin's behalf, does that make you the herald's herald's herald? A demi-herald, maybe?"

"Don't mistake me for Attezen, Child. I am not to be trifled with." The woman says, flourishing her jacket in the wind. "My name is Vannansa Cranston, and I'm the herald Sin spoke of."

"Uh huh. Uhm."

He tried to focus on where the hacker was, or if the offender wasn't present themself then whatever program or other tool they were using to inflict themself on Juliet. He had an inkling but was hoping he was wrong. He needed to keep Byrd distracted while he looked, though, as he recalled vividly her threat to eat him last time they met.

"How exactly do mortals kill god?"

Hopefully that would stump her for a while. And not piss her off. Crap.

"I don't know," Byrd says. "She's the priest, and I'm the beast!"

Byrd's eyes wander away from Enzo, down to Thirteen. She kneels, grinning and showing off her wickedly sharp teeth. "Well hello there. Look at you, all dressed up in your big girl wunderpants."

Thirteen just shrinks away, hiding further behind Enzo.

"Juliet and I don't really SEE each other." Byrd says, standing. "Being technically the same person and all. But no, there's no one else here. If there was, I probably would've eaten them."

Byrd pointedly looks down at Young Thirteen, running her tongue over her teeth.

"Okay, so. The New Gods are coming. Message received. Off you go." Emily waved her hand again, doing her best bored, uncaring impression. Presumably the New Gods weren't about to pop up and berate her for not taking their herald seriously. She did know that this was one of those circumstances where respect for her elders just wasn't warranted.

Max is bolstered by this whole irreverant commentary shtick he and his sister have going.

He turns to Emmy. "Why do self-important jackasses hate trifle so much?" And then back to she-who-is-not-to-be-trifled-with. "Have you ever tried trifle? It's delicious."

Alexis slid across the ground to a halt, glaring up at Viral. She hadn't even scratched her.

And then there was this woman... she reminded her of...

I didn't even put a dent in her armor... we could really need some heavy caliber here... or at least a plan besides trying our best to mock them...

"Ah, sarcasm." Cranston says dismissively. "The defense of a young boy. Tell me, boy, what is it that really lights a fire under you? What will stoke the blaze in your heart?"

Kid steps forward. "Hey, leave them alone!"

Cranston looks over towards Kid, covering her mouth politely as she suppresses a laugh- Poorly. "And what about you, girl? How does it feel to be a genetic accident, a one-time revival of a race so ancient it's not even considered real? There will never be another like you, you know. I can only imagine what it would be like to be forever alone."

The wind is suddenly out of Kid's sails, as she drops her hand and looks like she's about to cry.

"And you!" Cranston says, gesturing to Alexis. "How is it that you were supposed to be a creature of nature, but you've become...This?"

As Enzo continued to fail to sense anything, or indeed fail to affect or get information in any way from his surroundings other than standard vision, he realized that his estimate of what he could and couldn't do to help his brothers and sisters in these situations may have been overly generous. Bird looked like she was going to eat Thirteen, and Juliet was still on the fast track for melt down. Where did that leave him?

Juliet was in trouble because Byrd wanted out, and Juliet's normal method for controlling her just wasn't working. Byrd had sort of a dog type personality, and appealing to it before had kept her from murdering them all. She had been cooped up in Juliet for a long time, as far as Enzo knew. This was going to be hard.

"Stop that, Byrd. She's pack, just like the others. No eating."

He paused for a moment, waiting for Byrd to respond while debating his next move.

Enzo:

Byrd looks up from Young Thirteen, frowning, or perhaps scowling. "Her, too? How big is our pack? Not every kid that dresses like us can be related to us!"

How would she even know about... that? Max is immediatley unnerved by Cranston's commentary. But he senses an opportunity to restore some bravado when she starts talking smack about kid.

"Okay, whoa. So you get on my case for being mean to Bleedy Blackeyes up there, but you get to be mean to us? That's a little hypocritical, isn't it? And besides that, you're totally wrong. I'm sure someone said something similar to the last 'elf' that existed before Kid, whenever they were around, and they were wrong then. I'm no..." Max isn't entirely sure what the right word here is, but he's commited the the phrase now. A quick search reveals: "geneticist? But it's entirely possible you could be wrong now. And even if she is the end of one bloodline, she's gotten in on the ground floor of a whole new evolution. A brand new race that's apparently growing every day. And even if it stops growing, she'll always have us. She'll never be alone."

Max feels like he should say something about Alexis, too, but he's not entirely sure what Cranston was talking about, and he can't see Alexis's reaction, either. Still, he's reasonably satisfied with that outburst. He folds his arms defiantly and hopes nobody notices that he's still nervous.

"So why don't you stop being a bitch and tell us what you're doing here?"

"Hey! You...you..."

Silvie glared up at the Herald and tried to think of something to say, but nothing came to mind. She clamped her mouth shut and her lip quivered, and she shot a quick glance at Kid. In a moment she dashed to the other girl's side as quickly as she could.

"Hey," she said, her voice quieter, "Don't...don't listen to her, okay?"

Given the way Cranston had been getting into peoples' heads, it probably shouldn't have surprised Emily that she had something to throw at the twins. Nevertheless, she was rocked back for a moment, but took solace in knowing that they must have needled her to prompt this, "What, you're not going to do Viral? It's because she's being all meek, isn't it?"

Enzo shrugged outwardly while sighing in relief mentally.

"That's kind of a philosophy question. She's part of our team and our family, though, for certain."

He came to a decision and rolled forward with it.

"I need you to stop trying to take over the body you and Juliet share. I promise I'll make her let you out on the unformatted space, but it will hurt the pack if you take over right now."

He shook his head.

"I don't think it is, Byrd. I... What did you just say?"

He looked at her hard, and made a request to her system. It was non-invasive, simple, and met with no challenge by system security. According to Juliet's body, the time was now 10:00PM. It wasn't hugely off, but it was just enough to cause a problem.

"... Byrd, you've been tampered with. I need you to give me administrative access for a minute or when you transform bad things will happen to you. It's just a quick fix. Will you let me do that at least?"

She was totally gonna eat him later, but if this worked it would pay off right now at least.

Enzo flinched, but he continued. He had to do this or it was big trouble for everyone.

"Byrd, that's not what I'm talking about. If this doesn't get fixed it's going to cause problems related to your body. Please just trust me that this is important? I promise you will go out tonight."

It wasn't technically a lie. The real 10:00PM would roll around in a few hours, after all.

"I am not trying to cheat you! I am trying to help you. It's the full moon, isn't it Byrd? I can't bring down the moon. I can't stop the passing of time. I can remove the hack and let you go out and go wild -without- being altered by an outsider. I'm not taking anything from you, I'm just trying to do my job. I figure out when something's wrong with one of us, and I fix it."

He cast about mentally for an example, something to put this into her terms, less and less sure that she was going to fall for his half-truths. It didn't help that apparently Juliet had been doing this for some time.

"An outsider is trying to hamstring you, Byrd. I'm just trying to stop them. That's what pack is for, right?"

"I promise that by 10 after 10, you will be out running around. Now..."

He used his access to resynch Byrd/Juliet's clock to his own, making the time a much more accurate 7:05:22. He then saved the change and set Juliet to have sole ownership of her internal clock, and started the process to shut down her wireless etherware for the next hour.

He nodded as the changed saved and went into effect.

"That should do it. See you later, Byrd. We need to be heading out."

He sent his body the signal to pull first Thirteen, and then himself, back into his PDA and his body respectively. Time to wake up.

As Enzo finishes up, Byrd suddenly jumps to her feet- "T...Ten?! N-no! You lied! You promised as soon as you were done! You promised!"

Byrd gives Enzo one last look before he returns to his body. "She'll just stop me again like she always does! I'll never get free now!"

And then, Enzo jerks back awake in his body, and Juliet suddenly calms, before unceremoniously falling over, system rebooting on the command vehicle floor.
