Special Mission: 1- Winterviel
Location: Deck City- The Deck
December 10th, 3756
12:20 PM.

The rainy season has come and gone, and the snowy season is upon Deck City. It's been a quiet few months for the Wunderkind- No new siblings, only a few easy jobs here and there within the Deck itself. Temperatures have dropped, and so too has the snow. Deck City is covered in a blanket of white, with more falling. Red and green decorate the halls of The Deck, along with festive wreaths, decorated trees, and bright lights.

Winterveil is here! A time for family, charity, gifts, and for many, the most wonderful time of the year. And for the Wunderkind, a chance to finally get into the public again.

Bodies have been made up for the children to use to enter the city during the holidays to facilitate gift purchasing for their family and friends. A group trip to the mall is planned later that evening, with more scheduled through the month.

For now, the kids are in their Wunderkind bodies, on their floor. Kid is sipping hot cocoa, looking at the heavy snowfall from a balcony. Juliet is in the library with her giant, metal bound book- More than willing to tell any Wunderkind the TRUE meaning of Winterviel. And Janet is using one of the many computer terminals- Doing a bit of online shopping.

As the last months have past, Sam's been growing more and more used to the routine. Though a bit disappointed that nothing really exciting's happened since the mission with the BattleMon game, he's made due - and he's been sure to check just about once a week on if they've made any progress, still feeling awful about the Juniorkind stuck within. But other than that, he's been doing his job, practicing with his marksmanship and speed, and tinkering off and on with his "homing pigeon" project in the unformatted region of the Server now and again.

Today, somewhat surprisingly, Sam sits near Juliet, allowing himself to be subjected to Juliet's preaching with only the slightest of grimaces. Ever since their fight back in the summer, Sam's been nudged by Anka to spend more time with Juliet, and to try and convince the other Wunderkind to do the same, to try and better bring her into the fold, and maybe even start to enjoy her presence among them. Of course, it hasn't succeeded yet, though he's (reluctantly) made more than one effort before today. And every so often, he tries to cajole other Wunderkind to do the same; perhaps even today.

Alexis had been a bit down and quiet after they left the Battlemon world behind, having said a rather teary-eyed goodbye to Spooky and the rest, even though she'd been told they'd see them all again soon. Once outside the game, she'd mostly trained for a bit, or buried herself in Piano Splash, or hung back and read a book. She'd been focused on her studies a lot, and she was rapidly catching up with the other kids... Well, catching up at least. Her superior chip-mind made it easier anyway.

But now, Winterveil was approaching! YAY! Looking to be somewhat of higher spirit, she came to the area where Sam and Juliet was sitting, tugging slightly at the Red scarf she'd found. She only wore it occasionally, and she didn't really have the style yet.

"U-u-uhm... hi... S-sam... J-ju-Juliet..."

Enzo had spent time since the mission working on some project or other in secret in the unformatted area. He usually came back from this with a random piece of fruit! He wouldn't let on what he'd been doing just yet, though. He, like Sam, felt a little weird leaving the juniorkind in the Battlemon game, but there wasn't much to do about it right now. Just wait for the bosses to come up with a way to remove them safely.

With Winterveil coming up, Enzo was already thinking about gifts for everyone... which was going to be difficult. He had 11 gifts to buy, maybe 12 if he felt like being friendlier to Juliet than he felt.

For now he went to join Kid on the Balcony.

"Hey."

Balcony:

Kid looks over, snow blowing off her hair. "Hey." She returns. "You should get some cocoa. You know how great you guys have it? I didn't get treated this well and I was a movie star before I donned the tights. So what's up?"

Library:

"...And that," Juliet finishes, giving Alexis a look, "Is why orangutans are considered holy during Winterviel."

Emily had likewise been trying to interact with Juliet, but she really wasn't interested in learning the true meaning of Winterviel. Knowing Juliet's outlook on life, it was probably both religious and depressing. Which kind of missed the whole point of Winterviel, so far as Emily was concerned. And so she'd quietly excused herself, heading out onto the balcony to watch the snow fall. Try as she might, she just didn't like Juliet, which made interacting with her and trying to help her find her place within this new extended family a chore rather than something she'd do on her own. Still, life was good otherwise, and she'd be pretty silly to let Juliet get her down.

She'd been putting in a fair bit of time training, both her own abilities and simulators for vehicles. She couldn't help but feel she was really going to need that training one day. With the season though, such structure had largely gone out the window. Emily was very much looking forward to getting out and about for Winterviel.

Enzo leaned lightly on the rail, looking out at the snow and the night lights of Deck City.

"I might get some later. And... I didn't either, really. I mean, Mother Sarhaz wasn't mean to us or anything, but the Orphanage wasn't anything like being wunderkind either. I guess I hadn't really thought about it before-"

And then Emily came out as well.

"Oh, hey Emily!"

Although it was awkward to get pulled out of a mission in the middle of a conversation, and although he was a little bummed to have to leave the Battlemon world so soon, Max really isn't as worried about the juniorkind as the rest of his team. I mean, they're living inside a videogame. How terrible that must be! Eventually D52 will find a way to get them out. Their families will worry about them, and they may have a little catching up to do in school when they get out, but until then, they'll be just fine. Better than fine. Great!

Max also wasn't particularly interested in spending any more time than was absolutely necessary with Juliet at this point. He's learned that it's pointless looking for common ground where none exists. He's civil, of course, which is often more than she's willing to be, but he's fed up trying to show her warmth and getting nothing but ice back. As far as Max is concerned, as long as Juliet is a competent teammate, that's as much as he's willing to care about her. In that vein, he's invited her on a few random training sessions, and even tagged with her on a small job, but it's been strictly business for the past month and a half. Honestly, though, she seems to prefer it that way.

Other than Juliet, Max has been trying to spend time with each of his Wunderfamily, although Enzo and Casey seem to get more time than most. It's fun talking shop with Casey, even if she outclasses him in mechanics. And he's been prodding Enzo about his secret database project, especially curious since he's working on his own, but Enzo has been tight-lipped.

Today, Max is flying around outside the building; partly to test his ability to fly in heavy snow, and partly to look for balconies, terraces, and other relatively flat or stable architectural features upon which he can build snowmen. So far he's built two and a half. Even as an android, it's still too cold to be comfortable outside for too long, even if the beacon light at the tip of the pyramid is an exceptional heat source.

She interrupted her train of thought as millions of bits of data just... unlocked inside her mind, the subconscious voice she'd grown to recognize as that of her handler informed her in a mere nanosecond everything she could possibly need to know.

Not much stuck to her conscious mind, except for their body shaped.

"T-t-they kuh-kinda look l-like l-lumpy ol-old bags though, r-right?" she said with a hopeful smile, hoping she was contributing to the conversation.

"Um...that was...um...a really neat story, Juliet." Sam's not sure he followed it entirely, but he got the gist, mostly...Juliet is a very strange girl. "So..." Glancing to Alexis as she speaks up, he can't help but laugh a little, but he cuts it short as he imagines Juliet's reaction.

"But...what about other Winterviel things? What kinda stuff are you s'posed to you do for it? Do you have any kinda...um...special meals, or...um...what kinda gifts are you s'posed to give? Do you have any kinda special traditions an' stuff?

"...Um...besides the orangutan on the mantle, I mean."

Lauren had been pleased to return to a more solid shape, and had largely returned to her normal routine of training, bike riding, and watching the television versions of her favorite comics. She couldn't believe what she'd been missing! As Winterveil approached, her bike spent more of its time lying in the hall, and she even stopped Lunar Guardian R right in the middle of the second plot arc.

It didn't used to be that way. Well, sort of. She used to lose herself in books, or school work just fine this time of year. But these days, those things just didn't use up enough CPU cycles. And so there she was, racing down the hallway at top speed, all senses on full alert for any signs of changes: it wouldn't be the first time someone wound up as an unintentional obstacle in her training. She had left her bicycle on its side in the hall. She ran through the routine Jump. Disengage XLR8. Her left foot grazed the rear tire, starting it spinning ridiculously fast. Re-engage. Land. She slid at full speed to the opposite end of the hall. She raised her right leg, sliding only on her left foot. Disengage. The sudden friction sent her spinning and toppling over. Stop. Jump. She slammed her right foot down, stopping the spin as it brought her to face back down the hall, then pushed off with both feet, turning her fall into a controlled leap. Roll. She rolled, then landed in a runner's crouch. Go. Back down the hall she raced, approaching her bike again. Jump. Disengage XLR8. Her right foot grazing the rear tire. Land. Stop.

She turned back to the bicycle, and watched the rear wheel, as it slowly rotated. On her return trip, she had hit it in the opposite direction, bringing it almost to a perfect stop. Close. Again. She returned to the end of the hall, carefully calculating momentum and force in her head, and focusing on her control. It was a difficult problem, with a thousand contingency plans for interference and a thousand things to worry about.

She didn't worry about her father at all.

***

Ambassador Leafshade lay motionless in her (and Lauren's) room, jacked into the PDA. Notes on attack types, EVs and Eevees flew through her head. Next time, she'd know what she was getting into. She wouldn't just be good, she'd be great. She was confident at the outset that it would take only a few weeks, tops, for her to be equal to the greatest players in the world. They, after all, were not wunderkind. But knowing their strategies and the mechanics would only be enough to mimic them. And that was not enough. She had to find something new. She would approach this game from a new direction that no one had ever considered before, and she would surpass them all. She would be the very best, like no one ever was.

Soon the kids on the balcony have a new guest. It's Silvie, and boy, is she in a good mood - no, scratch that, she's in an awfully smug mood. There's a few small bags in her arms, as well as a long one that's tucked under her arm. She walks towards them with her head held high, and moves just slooowly enough for them to notice her.

Enzo glanced over as Silvie approached, looking... well, it wasn't a shit eatting grin, but it was maybe a few steps down from that. She obviously had something up her proverbial sleeve... or, more literally, in the bags she was carrying.

"Uh, hey. What's up?"

"No kidding?" Emily asked, having answered Enzo's greeting with a wave and a grin, "The place looks pretty spruce already, so you must have something pretty special there." If Silvie wanted to show off a bit, she was happy to feed her the requisite lines.

And Silvie fell for them hook, line and sinker. A wide grin spread across her face and she set down the bags. Most of them were set to the side except for the long one she carried under her arms: she took it and pulled out a box with a picture of a small, plastic tree.

"My handler gave it to me," she said, beaming with pride. "I also got some ornaments and lights and stuff for it, and I'm gonna set it up."

Library:

"No, no, NO!" Juliet shouts, slamming her book on the table. "Stuffed monkeys only go onto the mantle in the EAST! Not here, THE EAST! Haven't you been listening to ANYTHING I said? Don't you care?!"

Balcony:

"Oh, cool!" Kid shouts. "We can totally decorate that! Hey...Is that Max flying around out there?"

Sam just sighs quietly as Juliet makes yet another outburst. And just about every time he tries to ask about her personal celebrations too...maybe if he doesn't make the question so direct? "...Sorry, I...um...I thought you meant on the east mantle. So...uh...what do people not in the east do for Winterviel? What kinda things do y...do they do for it?"

"Well, you put up a big tree and decorate it- That symbolizes shelter from the cold. You give gifts and have a feast with your family and friends, to show how much they've meant to you." Juliet says. She seems to be thinking...Fairly calm for now.

Max:
Spoiler:
As you dart around the pyramid looking for snowman perches, something catches your eye through the snow. Two rooftops away, on the top of The Pines hotel. Blue hair blustering in the wind, leather jacket, blue urban camo pants...Blue tint ot her skin, and a giant sword on her back. ...Hey, he knows her!

Sam nods, smiling some. "We did a lot of the same stuff too at home. We didn't have a lotta people come over 'cause we didn't have a lotta room, but we had...I guess it was kinda a feast too. I even helped make some of it sometimes! What kindsa stuff do they usually have? An' what about you, Alexis? What kinda stuff did you do for Winterviel at home?" With Juliet calming down, Sam feels much more at ease. Anka was right, she just needs to get used to things here and she'll get along just fine.

Max stops buzzing around for a second, blinks on his infrared and squints. He wants to make absolutely sure he's seeing what he thinks he's seeing before he says anything.

... Yep, that's her.

After only a moment, Max blinks back to normal vision. He snaps a quick picture before starting to fly again, making his way back towards the balcony. He sends a message out to all active Wunderkind. So, I don't want to cause a mass freak-out or anything, but I just saw Ettezan on the roof of... Max stops to think for a second, picturing a map of the city and where exactly that would have been. ...The Pines hotel, a couple buildings over to the west. She's... just standing there. I wouldn't recommend provoking her but it might not be a terrible idea to go on the defensive, just in case. And probably inform the bossman.

Max lands on the balcony, glances around at everyone congregated there and briefly wonders what the maximum weight capacity is. He walks inside without greetings.

Actually, let me do that right now.

What did Rivendare say was the best method to contact him again? Well, email is the easiest thing to send, so Max whips up a quick cautionary email, attaches the picture of Ettezan, marks it with that annoying "attention!" exclamation point icon, and sends it off to the boss.

"Well, drat," Emily said with feeling. There went the holidays. She pulled up a map of the city to take a look at, see if there were any buildings nearby a deranged villain type might be targeting. Aside from theirs of course. And the Pine Hotel, come to think of it. Who knew who might be on the guest list?

Alexis had gone pale silent when Juliet had another of her trademarked outbursts, taking a few step backwards and covering her mouth with the scarf...

But then Sam spoke up to her and she stumbled over her words.

"W-w-w-w-we d-didn't cele-celebrate... I mean, we d-d-did...kind of. M-m-mom and d-dad were always... they h-had w-winterveil t-tours..." She smiled a little wistfully, "I l-l-learned a-all the s-songs by h-heart t...though..."

I think that after the data we gathered last time we fought Ettezan, the company should be pretty well armed against her. We didn't really do any lasting damage to her, but she was also kind of just this side of harmless to us. I think that they can handle her conventionally and unless orders change, we should just keep chilling.

He paused to look at that digital photo Max took himself despite what he had to say though. He planned to analyze it and see if there was anything new or different about her, and if she looked like she was doing anything specific.

"Looks like he is. Wanna bet a fuzzy, out of focus picture of him ends up on the comweb?"

As Max begins to fly away, he spots Ettezan jumping to the building over- The one that's next to The Deck. As he's about to land, he sees her make a final jump...Towards The Deck itself.

Those on the balcony can hear her landing heavily a dozen floors above, hitting the neoglass hard, but not nearly hard enough to shatter it. They spot her in a haunched position, one foot guiding the rest of her body, sliding down the side of the Deck pyramid like some sort of demented skier. She draws her sword, and spins, grabbing the railing of the balcony two floors down, and flipping onto it, before stepping inside.

...Sure enough, not ten seconds later, the security alarm is going off. It might very well be time for action.

Alexis back-played the whole log between Max and command in her mind as soon as she heard Max ask for thoughts, and her face grew a little pale... even more so as Ettezan made her entrance at the balcony, the klaxon bellowing out the alarm throughout the floor.

Is she inside? We need to stop her now, if she's on our floor she's in our home, we've got a right to protect it! she sent out across the com-link, dashing off towards the common area while tugging a little more at the scarlet scarf she was wearing, We can take her down, we're stronger than we were back then!

Max changes direction, and perches on the balcony that Ettezan just flipped onto, to see what she's up to. He also sends a snarky message to Rivendare.

Looks like Ettezan decided to come say all kinds of hellos all up in our business. But you guys got this, right? You want us to disregard the invasion, too?

Emily wasted no time in moving to intercept Ettezan. Having been at the balcony, there wasn't much ground to cover. Still, she decided not to launch straight into battle. If nothing else, she ought to be able to confuse the self-proclaimed angel.

"Hello, Ettezan. Merry Winterviel. Eggnog?" she asked innocently.

About to reply to Alexis, Sam hushes up when Max sends out his message, looking to the nearest window. When Ettezan goes so far as to land on their balcony, he stands, listening to their communications. When Alexis goes darting off, he looks back to Juliet. "...We needa get our stuff before stuff starts getting really bad. C'mon, Juliet. If we keep low, maybe she won't see us./" Heading towards the door, he waits at the doorway, darting out quickly as best he can with Juliet and heading for their storage room.

As he goes, he sends off a message to the other Wunderkind in the building. I'm heading for our stuff, I'll grab as much of you all guys's as I can. Lauren, can you meet me there so we can get more of it?

Max and Lauren use a balcony jump to come from behind, as D-52 guards approach from the front, lead by Rivendare. Ettezan's hand twitches, though it's still strapped firmly to her back. She looks over as Emmy speaks. "Yeah, most wonderful time of the year. What's your size? I'm gonna look into getting you kids some actual clothes."

"Oh, you know, regular kidswear,"Emily said, choosing not to hear any mockery, "What about you? Is there anything you'd like to see under your tree?"

Max brings his hand up to his chin in mock-pensiveness. "You know, I could actually use a new bike suit. I miss my old leather jacket. Size 16, if you'd be so kind."

"I'll be sure to get you new socks; I think you got the underwear covered though."

She pulls her sword and points it it at Rivendare, causing the hand-full of guards to draw their weapons. "You know what I want." She says, firmly.

Rivendare nods, and signals behind him. A D-52 scientist brings a small machine forward, before setting it on the floor. Rivendare shoves it over with his shoe- Ettezan stops it with her boot and picks it up. "Many thanks. Always a pleasure."

Tucking the machine under her arm, she begins towards the balcony again, stopping to stare the twins down. It seems they have one last chance to say something before she leaves.

(Ettezan is on her way back towards the balcony. If you're not Max or Emmy, you are arriving behind Rivendare and the guards presently- If you chose to do so.)
