Alexis looked down on herself, then frowned a little. Had she changed?

"I'm afraid I don't know what you are talking about."

Ambassador Leafshade bristled at the NPC's trade suggestion, her fur fluffing up to make her appear quite a bit larger for a moment. "What? NO. She's mine! No one gets her!"

Lauren, meanwhile, dealt with Sam's concerns.

"'All this stuff about justice...'" she said in confusion. "What do you--" She suddenly gave Sam a look of utter disbelief. "No way, you haven't read any of the Lunar Guardian series? It's pretty much the best comic ever! It's about a girl who saves a cat from some kids and then it turns out the cat can talk and is from an ancient kingdom and she gives the girl super powers so she can track down the reincarnation of the princess of that kingdom and they have to fight monsters and it turns out she was the princess all along which I guess is kind of a spoiler but it's also really obvious so it shouldn't count and she winds up getting a whole team of--"

Janet's question may have proven to be something of a relief. "Huh? No, I feel fine. Better than fine! Maybe a bit more flexible than normal!"

Ambassador Leafshade warily turned her attention away from the NPCs and towards Louie as her fur slowly returned to normal. She still wasn't sure she could trust them not to steal Lauren.
"Hmm? Oh!" She took the offered wing in her paw and gently shook it. "You did a good job out there too!"

"All right!" she shouted as she grabbed a ball. "Let's do this!"

She pressed the button and flame whirled around her as she vanished into the ball. There was a moment's pause before she popped out again. Her changes were not as drastic as the other girls, but they were still noticeable. Her trainer-fied outfit was replaced with her previous Wundaroos suit, only the yellow and red colors were replaced with orange and black. On her face, though, was a black and yellow face mask...with two little piggy ears on the sides. An orb at the end of her (also new) curly cue tail bobbed up and down as she looked at herself in shock.

"Whoa! I-Iiiii-CHOO!"

Fire burst out as she sneezed, and she stood numbly for a second as the smoke cleared.

"That," she said finally, "Was so cool."

Louie nods briskly to Leafshade; indeed, the battle went quite well. An excellent sign of things to come, to be sure. Gazing out over the field, he takes in the land ahead, leek shouldered as he readies himself to move on.

"Uh..." Meanwhile, Sam finds himself under a barrage of fangirling. "...I think maybe I heard of it? It...um...sounds familiar?" When Janet comes up, Sam steps back a bit, before Lauren can pick her spiel back up. Eager to keep things on the new topic, he continues on that line. "...Hey, do you think you can still do stuff outside combat now? Dittos normally can't do that, but since we're kinda special and all, maybe it'd work? It might be pretty useful if you can! Maybe you can even transform into stuff that isn't a battlemon too?"

Early Game:

"Yeah, this could actually be pretty useful." Janet says. "Especially if you could mimic things that aren't Battlemon."

Louie looks ahead, noticing they're on Route 266- The road to Sharpe City, location of the first gym.

MIdgame:

"Yeah, that's me." The girl says, slowly approaching. "How'd you know? You're not...Like everyone else here."

Endgame:

The girls-turned-Battlemon, along with their battlemon, ready for battle...

Blizzards!

Swords dances!

Flamethrowers!

Thunderbolts!

Feint Attacks!

Metronomes!

IT'S SUPER EFFECTIVE!

The smoke clears and the trainers, and all....45 total Battlemon are defeated, the trainers lying in a heap.

Everyone levels up.

Everyone.

"Well then." Thirteen says, reverting back to her trainer form. "That was strangely effective."

While the children talk about matters of no import, Louie gives Leafshade a meaningful look of intent. Giving her another nod, he begins striding forward without even a look back. They are quite clearly skilled enough to accomplish these goals without outside aid, after all, and this can only speed matters along.

The gears were now turning in Lauren's head. "Oh. OH. Is that what transform does? Then maybe I'll get to fight something cool later! Though...wasn't it a bad guy who had that power? That's not very cool..."

Ambassador Leafshade scampered into the group at this point. "Hey, guys...I think Louie wants to get on with the mission."

"Oh, no, the other trainers aren't bad guys!" Sam shakes his head, more than likely misunderstanding Lauren's comments. "Well, most of them. There's one group in the old games that's a group of bad guys, they steal Battlemons and stuff...oh, but the game's all about...well, we're Battlemon trainers, and we're trying to be the best trainers ever, so we're trying to beat the best ones, and we're going to Battlemon gyms in every city to get badges. And when we get all the badges, we can fight the very best Battlemon trainers so we can win Battlemon training. And those are just all other trainers, and some of them are doing the same thing, and some of them just like collecting Battlemons, and some of them have them for friends or for doing stuff for them and that kinda stuff. It's all just for fun mostly, Battlemons don't even ever die even."

When Leafshade speaks up, Sam looks off. "Huh?"

Meanwhile, Louie is surprisingly further along - for such a tiny thing, he's pretty speedy. It won't be long until he's sure to get into some trouble, for certain.

"Yeah, it was pretty easy, wasn't it?" Emily said, "I guess the game mechanics are set up for one-on-one fights, rather than swarming people.Oh well, let's get moving." With that, she led the way towards the dungeon entance. No sense waiting for the trainers to respawn or whatever they did.

Max blinks, momentarily distracted by an incredibly brief, barely perceptible sense of the game world suddenly having to crunch a bunch of data. He wonders what the other kids are up to. But as soon as he felt it, it was gone. Weird.

He shakes it off, while Swellow perches on Saguaro's head and saguaro leans against Hovertank, who has lowered himself to ground level.

"Well, we're not actually part of the game. We're from outside, like you. We were actually sent in along with some friends of ours to look for you and your friends James and Andy. You guys sorta disappeared from the mall you were visiting with Mr. Gibson, and he's worried about all of you. Along with other people, probably." Max raises a hand preemptively to stop any worrying. "You're not in trouble or anything, we're just here to find you, make sure you're ok, and help you get back out of the game."

Suddenly, Max seems a little worried. He glances at Enzo and attempts to sends him a private message, but realizes that the comlink doesn't exist in the battlemon game world. Their communicators aren't really good for privacy from people within earshot, so he's just going to have to let it slide for now.

Turning back to Kate, Max finally introduces himself. "Umm, anyway, I'm Max. With me are my friends Kid and Enzo," he adds, gesturing to each in kind. "Nice to meet you!"

Max lifts his hat slightly and does a one-pass head-scratch. "Ah... wow, ok. I guess I got ahead of myself a little bit there. I guess we need to do a little more explaining about what's going on, but... do you not remember visiting a mall with James and Andrew Gibson, and their dad, before you ended up here? This would have been..." Max realizes he can't be sure how time passes in the game world relative to the real world. How much time have these kids perceived to have past since they were sucked into the game? "... Uhh, a while ago."

Alexis seems to twirl into herself, slowly becoming thinner, smaller, before she, with a =POP=, enters back the way she was, Creepy Skulk. It seemed her ice-powers went away with the change as well, and she winces as the cold winds seem to affect her for the first time.

Well, that was pretty easy... sorry if I did something stupid.

"It's not a problem." Thirteen says, beginning to walk. "Just be more careful with challenges, yes? We may be in trouble if any are left- I know my team is quite exhausted."

...And now, it almost seemed asif someone was watching them.

Enzo chimed in with Max's question.

"One of the three of you would have been playing a hand held game. This game, to be specific. This place isn't real, it just looks real because we're all in here right now."

He waited for her to answer, hoping for some spark of recognition from her. She might not understand everything immediately, but surely she would remember having been human, living in a world that didn't revolve around fighting and trading mons... right?

Max is a little confused by the level of Kathy's confusion.

"Well, I mean, it's not like you've been adventuring, capturing and training battlemon and having mons-battles your entire life, right? And I'd bet that," Max gestures towards her outfit, "Isn't the kind of stuff you usually wear. And you knew the thing about tossing a sphere at a trained mon, so you've probably played one of the BattleMon games on the Deuce, right?"

"If it helps, you can think of this place we're in right now as a different world instead of a game. It's separate from the world where you go to school and hang out with friends at the mall and have dinner with your family, and all that stuff."

"Yeah, it all worked out okay in the end," Emily said, "But... Do you get that prickling on the back of your neck?" she looked around, trying to put a source to her unease, "I don't think any of the NPCs are bright enough to hang back and watch, but they might not be the only ones in here." She'd been going to recall her Mons, but held off for a few moments longer.

Early Game:

Following Louie's lead, the group makes it to Sharpe City, the first major city of the game.

They can heal up at the Monspital, or maybe buy some items from the item shop...Go to the gym to challenge the gym leader, or go train some more! Or maybe go to the museum but who does that.

----

Midgame:

Kate continues to respond to the explanations with questioning looks.

----

Endgame:

"There's definitely someone here." Thirteen says. "But it's not Flea. We're being watched. It could be that someone out in the physical world is watching us, but unlikely."

Sam does his best to catch up with Louie, but it's not until Sharpe City that he finally reaches him - that little duck can run pretty quick when he's intent on something. Louie is just about to step into the Gym when Sam finally reaches him, grabbing him and picking him up, turning him so they look face to face.

Sam levels a glare of irritation at his battlemon, sighing. "Louie, don't do that! You aren't allowed to run ahead. Got it?"

Louie harumphs, crossing his wings, but he nods reluctantly.

"Good." Setting him back down, Sam turns to the others, making sure he didn't leave them behind.

And behind Sam's back, Louie rolls his eyes, staring at the Gym impatiently. That boy worries far too much.

Lauren was close behind, with Ambassador Leafshade bounding after. Lauren looked up at the obviously-important building

"So...a gym. Is this a place to train battlemons?"

Ambassador Leafshade sniffed the air. "Louie seemed really excited to get here. Do you think he knows where the kid is?"

Wow. Apparently Kate was ingrained more deeply into the game than they thought. Max shifts his weight, puts his hand on his chin, and furrows his brow. He isn't sure where to go from here. Meanwhile, his battlemon seem to be pretty bored with the current conversation. Saguaro is lying back on the hot sand, lazing out totally relaxed, watching the sparse clouds go by. Hovertank seems to be resting while Swellow perches on top of him, preening himself.

Max gestures forward. "Okay, okay. So, for now, just forget anything I said about games and other worlds and all that nonsense. Let's just focus on things that might actually make some sense. Are you telling me you don't remember Jim and Andy Gibson, or being in their class at school?"

Alexis nodded, smiled a little and fished out the two chips that'd make her turn to Ice-magician/Froslass-jacketed wunderkind, and put them in the slots on her arms. The now familiar colorshift crossed her body and then she was mostly white, pale blue and the color of very, very pale peaches.

Alright, I'm sending out Spooky too, he can keep himself invisible for a while... I'll keep in contact with you guys throughout, in a ten second interval I'll send a click across the internal com-system, if you haven't heard that click in 20 seconds, something's happened.

And with that, she was gone, her mons back in their spheres and the wunder-spy disappearing from the group quickly.

Midgame:

Katey nods. "Yeah, I know Jimmy and Andy. We all started together. Went to training school together...Caught our first mons together. Haven't seen them in a long time though!"

----

Endgame:

Alexis disappears into the snow, as the other girls continue walking. "I doubt Flea will be a problem, if she's here." Thirteen says. "She is persistent, but not particularly clever."

Alexis:
Spoiler:
It's a good thing you slotted into ice form; as soon as you walked away from the group the snow picked up around you, blustering about with a cold wind. Though things are a little tense now...You've got to find them before they find you.

Sam shakes his head at Lauren's question. "...Well, kinda, I guess. Remember what I said about how you're s'posed to be going around and getting all the badges from all the Battlemon gyms? What you do is you go in there, and you fight a bunch of trainers, and then you fight the gym trainer at the end and he's like a boss. And then when you beat him, you get his badge and you also get a special item that can teach one of your Battlemons a new move. But sometimes the fights can be kinda tricky. Especially for one duck." Looking back, he gives Louie another look, and the battlemon harumphs, giving him a look right back.

"Anyway, I guess she might be in there? We can look in and see. Just be careful you don't get any trainers' attention just in case. We should probably go get some items before we try to do that just to be safe. Since you beat that trainer, you should have some money now too. Or probably Leafshade I guess."

Alexis creeped through the snow, keeping her eyes just above the edge as she tried to spot the watchers... she needed a rise, some higher position that she could get an overview from... just a rock would do, in fact, it would be just perfect. She could crawl up on it without drawing too much attention to herself, and then she could see whoever it was that was following them.

She turned to Spooky, and Snolass (why was she still around?) and whispered quietly "You two split up and try to see if you can find out whoever's watching us... don't attack them, return to me and tell me their position... And make yourself invisible, you purple lump..." Spooky poked out its tongue in irritation but flew away, fading from sight except for a pair of eyes that peered around, managing to still give the impression that it was leering.

Enzo looks fairly confused, glancing at Max for a moment and then back to Katey. Did... Did the game overwrite her memory? Enzo sets to work trying to analyse Katey's code. Even if it hadn't seemed to work before, this seemed like a time to try again. Maybe there would be something he could put right to fix her memory. Or maybe she was messing with them, but somehow Enzo didn't think she was.

Ambassador Leafshade nodded. "Yeah, I got some money from that fight. We should probably go buy stuff first."

Lauren stepped away from the door reluctantly. "Okay, I guess you're right. I kinda want to try transforming into something more powerful, though."

Ambassador Leafshade shook her head. "Later. 'Always use every advantage you can get', remember? That never changes."

"Yeeeeaaaah, I guess..." Lauren whined, staring at her feet. She stopped for a moment, then looked up with at Ambassador Leafshade with a tentative grin. "I guess...that's why you're the trainer here, right?"

Ambassador Leafshade looked startled for a moment, then giggled. "Exactly! Leave everything to me. Now, which way to the shop?"

Lauren stared blankly at Ambassador Leafshade for a moment before raising her arm to point at the large "BATTLEMART" sign hanging on a nearby building.

Ambassador Leafshade coughed in embarrassment. "...of course, a trainer is nothing without her faithful battlemon..."

Lauren grinned in response and turned to the others. "So what kind of items are there?"

"Seasons?" Max had forgotten that this game had a seasonal cycle. How long did each season take again? About a month? "Oh yeah! That sounds about right." But wait, even if each season only took a month in real-world time, that doesn't necessarily mean that for Kate it's felt like a month. Who knows what one month of real-world time feels like from inside the game. Dang! And asking how many days it was wouldn't help, either.

Best to table the issue for now.

"So what was training school like?" Max isn't sure what she means by training school. He doesn't remember there being any in-game school. He's assuming her game coding is interfering with her memory of school in the real world, but that's only a theory.

Man, it's too bad Max and Enzo can't communicate silently.

Endgame:

Alexis squirms out of her hoodie, as her assailant leans in to speak. She recognizes the voice...Juliet.

"We're pulling out." Juliet says coldly. "There's a problem. They can't get the kids out- Not yet. THey gotta work on it more. Go back and tell them we're leaving. Get the word out to prepare for extraction."

Early Game:

Janet stops short, nodding to something real quick. After a moment, she speaks:

"Hey, we're being ordered to pull out. SOmething's come up, we're supposed to head out for debriefing."

"I guess we should just get-", Sam starts to say before Janet speaks up. "Huh? Um...okay. Is everything all right?"

Location: Deck City- The Deck, Meeting Room.
August 2nd, 3756
2:20 PM.

The call for extraction goes out, and within an hour, all the children are extracted. A meeting is called in the conference room where the day started. Rivendare waits for them, a serious look on his face.

"So, we have a problem." he begins as the kids take their seats. "Those three are way too ingrained in there. They don't know what's going on, let alone what they are. We're gonna have to figure out a way to get them out without it being a huge shock to them. For now, you guys are dismissed- Pay will be deposited into your accounts."

Rivendare stands, and makes his way out.
