"We're officially going to be merchant agents, right?" Jim glanced at Leveticus for confirmation. "We'll want documents that prove that we're such people. Don't know what stuff pilgrims carry myself, but we'll need them as well. Not of the same quality and authenticity as our "real" papers, mind you." He was as much speaking to the the prime as to the Inquisitor.

She looked to Leveticus; "I am in agreement; pilgrims first who may be concealing a mission to scout out trade opportunities. Still, I would de-emphasize the merchant aspect."

"In that, I agree," replies Leveticus. "While I can certainly handle a barter with a street vendor, I'm scarcely likely to fool a merchant into believing I'm a trader myself for any length of time."

"I need what names you will be using, if they are not your real ones, and what sort of business you are supposed to be in," Sholmes continues.

"Let me clarify: you want me to contact ONLY the Arbites? And shall they meet you when you arrive?"

OOC: Once I get an answer to these questions I can whizz you along.

Kara bows to the Inquisitor. "I will use my current name; there is less chance of confusion later. My role in either cover story would be as an aide and a pretty face. I don't have the martial skills of our bladesinger," she nods to Chani, "so I will let my face and figure provide a cover." Kara glances down at her sanctioning brand showing at the base of her throat and upper chest; "The less attention I draw to my abilities and the better. My papers should not broadcast my status unnecessarily."

OOC: I'm not sure how identity papers work in the Imperium. Unless sanctioned psyker identiity papers are printed in flaming letters on bright paper she would want something that treated her as low key but not hiding who she is; more a failure to tell the whole truth than a lie.

"We shall change our names as well?" Chani seemed surprised as well, but nodded, "very well, it is not uncommon. I shall take the name of Ambra." She nodded to herself, smirking slightly.

"Ambra Falduto, she is the... how would you say, archetype, the name of the soldier... role. Few outside of Corsa would know."

OOC: This being Space Middle Ages, you would have a large paper saying that Guild X gives so and so the right to act as a representative.

Any official documents for a psyker would be obvious, with a big stamp saying "SANCTIONED PSYKER."

"We've already agreed to contacting the Arbites, so we'll go with that. Once we're on the ground, and can speak with the head Arbitrator and we can decide then whom else to trust. We will need their support, as they are likely the only ones with the equipment to properly examine the artefacts, and we'll need use of whatever forensics knowledge they possess," Leveticus will add. "Especially since I doubt there's a Temple of Mars on-world. Right now, I believe the fewer people whom know who we are and why we're there the better. As far as being 'officially' merchants, not so much so. We'll be as much pilgrim as we can get away with, and as much traders as we can get away with. The Arbites will know the truth, anyone else we can tell whatever they wish to hear."

Also, did she find anything out about the artifacts while searching in the Inquisitor's library? I may have missed it... </ooc>

I mentioned it a few posts above. Nope. :)

Sorry guys for the absence -- it's been a combination of work and starting a new relationship, plus my birthday is in a few days.

I'm going out of town for a day tomorrow, but afterwards this will be going at a reasonable GM posting speed. (Ask Alex; normally I'm pretty fast ;) ).

And I'm back. However, my 40th birthday (oh God no) is this weekend and I and my girlfriend are going out of town to celebrate, hopefully escaping the killer heatwave. So for now...

After a period of two weeks' travel through the Warp (when I get back I will determine such things as the psyker's search for a flak vest and so forth), you arrive in orbit over Famine and prepare to embark on a shuttle to Harvest, the capital. When I get back from my celebration, I will answer any questions you have regarding Famine or Harvest in detail that might be addressed in the guide Sholmes prepared.

Before we go further, I want to know something -- what you are wearing/carrying, as opposed to what is in your luggage. If you have any compact weapons and are carrying them somewhere concealed, I want to know where. This may seem banal, but there is a reason. ;)

Note that Famine law dictates the following (you know this since it's in Sholmes' guide). (Of course, as members of the I, you are under no obligation to follow any of these laws, but if you don't you will obviously attract attention and frequent questioning by Enforcers or Arbitrators.)

Harvest is rough-and-tumble, but not hideously so. The following laws apply to civilians (i.e., non-law enforcement or PDF personnel). Sidearms may be carried in public as long as they are 1) clearly visible, such as in a hip holster, 2) pistols, and 3) classified as "self-defense" firearms. This means a sidearm that is not capable of fully automatic fire. So, laspistols, stub autos, and so forth are permitted. Autopistols or any Basic weapon are not. Close combat weapons are permitted.

Concealed weapons are not allowed without a permit -- which however you can obtain from the Arbites when you contact them.

People don't normally walk around wearing visible armor, but anything you can plausibly put on under your civilian clothes is OK (which means most armor that covers just the body except for Carapace).

So -- what are you guys lugging around?

<ooc> glad to have you back Chris and enjoy the time off for your birthday. </ooc>

Kara will keep her compact las pistol concealed. Unless she procures better armor she will wear her quilted vest under/with her street clothing. She will have a knife visible on her belt or girdle depending on if she is in pants or a dress.

Leveticus can wear his vest under his normal clothes easily enough. The autopistol can be hidden in a jacket. I need to have procur a knife or dagger (I haven't seen the character in a while (hard drive crash) and just realized there over-sight on my part). There's just no way to conceal his crossbow, so it'll have to stay with his gear (how hard would it be to get the bolts blessed?).

Like Leveticus' armour, Jim' mesh vest can be concealed underneath his clothes. His only firearm, a pump-action shotgun, is another matter. He'll be leery about giving it up and want to keep it close at hand. Storing it (safely) inside a large bag, swaddled with clothes, is the only thing he can think of. It won't stand up to a search but hopefully they can avoid that. The club can be worn openly at least, the knife under his coat and the knuckle dusters tucked into a pocket. Ammo and the doses of stimm and their injector can go inside the bag too. The rest of his gear can be worn openly, though he'll likely need to buy some more lho sticks after their journey through the warp.

Autopistols aren't compact (they're basically Uzis), so if anybody were to frisk you they would find it. You all have luggage, so there's no reason you couldn't just stick the crossbow in that.

Blessing weapons in the sense that they obtain the Holy quality is a really hard and involved process.

Are you wearing civilian clothes or your clerical robes?

If the autopistol (more 'machinepistol' than 'automatic pistol') would be detected, it'll go in his duffel. He'll keep a utility knife on him, which can be hidden. His clerical robes will stay in his luggage. No need to advertise he's a clergyman until it becomes necessary.

Welcome back.

Chani has, in blatant rebellion from Sholmes off-hand remark about her highly ceremonial and culturally treasured tattoos, decided to wear her soldier-outfit, the one resembling closely a theatrical pirate of the 17th-18th century, complete with dark-red leather gloves, a duelist's hat with three feathers in it and her blade at her side.

I assume you are joking? :)

I am indeed back, 40 years old (oh God no), and ready to get on with a more rational posting speed.

You descend by shuttle from the Rogue Trader vessel. The sky over Harvest, Famine's capital city, is thundering furiously. Lightning streaks about the shuttle and peals of thunder can be heard. The shuttle rocks back and forth, buffeted by the wind. Visibility outside the craft's windows is nil -- only gray clouds can be seen.

No one else is onboard the vessel.

After an unsettling descent of about a half an hour, you make contact with the ground. The large rear bay doors of the shuttle open up, and you are greeted by the sight of sheets of gray rain and the occasional lightning flash. You can make out the large plascrete slab of a spacecraft landing area and a few indistinct human figures about 100 meters away looking at you.

Kara will softly pray during the unsettling decent in the shuttle. When they land and the doors open she'll step out so she is just in the blast of the rain and stand still for a moment. Drenched but smiling ferally she'll turn back to her companions; "Storm and wrack! We are blessed by the Emperor with a hunter's weather."

Chani looked around the rain with a slight frown... this would be... unfortunate for her carefully applied make-up, which had taken her hours to put on considering her lack of skills in the complicated field. Still, she wore her hat, and gloves, so she was fairly sure the bars wouldn't just... pop-up during this relatively short walk.

"I am inclined to agree, the weather presents a voco of itself, the sound is disliked by many, but I find the rhythmic patter calming. Let us proceed with our task, those over there have been observing us since we landed."

Kara dances lightly back up the landing ramp dripping water in every direction. Hoisting the bag with her skimpy belongings over her shoulder she causes the wet and now clingy blouse and capri pants to shift intruigingly over her body. "Come on then, let us clean off the taint of the Warp travel with honest rain!" She skips up closer to Chani; "Let's rig you a scarf to protect your hair and make-up. It would not do to ruin such beauty."

Jim donned his hat as he stepped out into the rain, thankful that he'd worn his duster coat on the ride down. He looked up at the sky, interpreting the rain and thunder in his own way.

"Like being back Sinophia." he muttered. "Let's hope the similarities end there."

A few servitors heft some small cargo items off of the shuttle (you're the reason for this trip, but the Rogue Trader captain, being one, was able to make a little profit along the way).

Those of you who stepped out of the shuttle are instantly soaked.

You can see a few figures standing near the shuttle (i.e., 50 meters or so from it), under the protection of an underhang near a large building. They wave toward you. It's impossible to make them out distinctly through the rain, but you can see that they are wearing dark clothing.

Spoiler for Jim:

Spoiler:
Common Lore (Adeptus Arbites) tells you that their clothing looks like that commonly used by Enforcers sector-wide.

Chani laughed lightly at Kara's enthusiasm and nodded to the woman, grinning slightly. "Very well, if you insist, I'd thought my hat would be enough, but seeing this rain has changed my mind."

So, after some quick fixing of a scarf, they proceeded, and Chani glanced at Jim as he made his observation.

"Well, it was only to be expected, no? We announced our arrival with this ship and I'm sure they rarely get visitors to this world." she hummed a light, carefree tone as they walked towards them.

Having spent the trip trying to pass the time with comrades and crew with a set of dice he made from his purchased clay (molded along with a crude little aquila, as befits a pilgrim), deck of cards, and little else aside from stories and maps to go over, Huw was ready to stretch his legs.

He inhaled sharply as lightning flashed, reluctantly stepping off the shuttle, holding his cap tight. Slinging his bag over his shoulder, he trucked onwards to greet the waving figures. During the transit, he voiced some concerns to his associates, raising his voice against the weather.

"All this water and electrical stuff's just asking for a disaster to happen! I mean, I've heard about it, that it's the way of things, but don't people get cooked left right and center? I mean, the water alone I could be fine with..." He shrugged. He noted the havoc the rain was creating with the wardrobes of the females of the group.

"Should've picked a fabric that won't soak through, like canvas." He made a quick twirl as he walked, to show how his own clothing hadn't become a clinging, drenched mass. His spirited display was cut short as a loud peal of thunder caught up with the lightning from before.

"I just don't know about that."

(He's got his autopistol holstered inside his coat. His knife is sheathed at his hip, and his brass knuckles are hidden under the right collar of his coat, spare autopistol clip under the left. Everything else is stashed in his bag, including the autogun and his grenade [wadded with his clothing].)

Kara smiles at Huw. "Ahhh... but it is good to be back out in the open air with the rain and lightning." She regarded her soaked clothing for a moment. "Clothes will dry. If rain such as this is common to this world then we will have to buy your canvas or oilskin cloaks. Clothing of a local style would help us blend in better. We could listen to the beat of rumors in the market while buying more suitable clothing if necessary."

Chani didn't say anything, she honestly couldn't speak of being dressed as a pilgrim... then again, her clothes weren't exactly water-resistant either, but she'd thankfully brought a cloak with her as well, to avoid the faux pas of wardrobe malfunction that was occasionally done on purpose by some lesser performers who wanted to earn a quick ride to fame.
