Child's Play

"Uh...Yeah, cool." Kid says, awkwardly and half heartedly. "Puns, too."

Enzohad been preoccupying himself by arcing electricity between his fingers, and shooting grass blades and such now and then. He looked over when Kid arrived. He smiled as Alexis let loose and actually hugged Kid. It was obvious that she had contact issues when they all first met, but right now Alexis you'd never know. Hey, wait. Here was their chance to include Kid. She was always feeling left out and stuff, right?

"Oh hey. Uhm, you want to try it out? It's a lot of fun. It's easy, too!"

He waited for her answer before doing anything rash, but he was more than a little excited to see what powers Kid might have.

"Uh..No. Don't worry about it." Kid says.

Emily hadn't been best pleased with the sudden manifestation of fire herself, but she managed to keep it from showing. She wasn't entirely sure what to make of the magical abilities Alexis and Enzo were now manifesting. Like all of their abilities, she suspected the full applications would only become apparent wih time.

"Yo, sleeping beauty!" Max addresses Kid with a smile, both happy she showed up, and amused by Alexis's spontaneous hug.

Max seems to be back to himself, punctuating his sarcasm with rolling hand gestures. "You didn't miss much. Thirteen's just blowing our minds with the fact that magic apparently exists and is a part of us or something. Except it might not technically be magic, but... It smells like magic, and it tastes like magic, so..."

Max isn't entirely sure where he was going with that last thought. So, he has a new one. "Oh!" He taps Kid's right wrist, and opens her chip compartment thing. "We're apparently modular."

"There's these 'program advance' chip things that give us special powers or..." Max realizes that they didn't actually know what the non-magic chips do yet. He also notices that the colors of the chips match the color schemes of the two juniorkind Alexis found.

He asks Thirteen, "Hey... so, like, do all juniorkind come with PA chips or something?"

"Yes." Thirteen says. "That is their role to play. They will assist you."

She pauses for a moment, before continuing. "And, if you want to, you can make them, as well."

Alexis grinned at Kid and laughed a little, "Why not? Well, it's not like we're going to force you, but this is pretty awesome." She looked over at Max and sighed.

"Who cares if it's magic or not? We've been fighting... zombies, and seeing people from the future except they're not..."

Emily frowned thoughtfully, "How do those files we got from that Yuri person fit into it all?" she asked, "He seemed to be talking about a different type of upgrade than chips."

"Ah." Thirteen says. "Junior was among the files, there. But he was speaking more of model upgrades than advances."

[Idran1701]

"He was?" A little concerned for their new brother now, Sam looks to Junior. "D'you remember how you got there, Junior? How'd that guy have a flare drive with you?"

"I d-don't kn-know..." Junior says, shying behind Thirteen again.

"Oh, no, that's okay if you don't know, I was just askin' is all." Kneeling down, Sam puts himself at eye level with Junior, smiling. "And you don't have to be scared here either. We're all family here."

Junior says nothing, instead shying even further behind Thirteen.

Alexis continued to make more lumpy lump snow as they spoke, listening to the discussion between Junior and Sam. She wondered if the little kid had ever been a child before he bacame a juniorkind... for some reason she didn't think they were... it just seemed weird.

Silvie smiled at Kid when she came by, and then turned to Thirteen.

"So, uh, can any of these make me punch hard? Like, really, really hard - oh, or run super fast! Or jump super high! Can any of them do that?"

Thirteen nods, but says nothing about which does what.

"Hmmmn...."

Silvie stroked her chin (not that there was anything to stroke), and looked at them carefully.

"So, um....how do I tell which is which?"

[Shinigori V2]

"Well." Thirteen begins. "One is Razzie's colors, the other is Benji's."

[NebulaQueen]

"I know that," she said deadpan. "But I mean, how do I tell what does what stuff? Like...like what would Benji's do?"

[Shinigori V2]

Thirteen just smiles, and offers Benji's chips.

[NebulaQueen]

Silvie narrowed her eyes at Thirteen, before she bit her lip and looked back down at the chips.

Well, it's now or never... she thought. After a moment's hesitation, she snatched one of the chips, and tried to install it.

Silvie slots in Benji's chip, and after confirmation of her program advance...There is no physical change.

But, Silvie herself suddenly simply knows that she's definitely faster than she used to be. Her reaction times are better, and she could probably run a foot race a little faster than a moment ago.

Enzo looked at Silvie expectantly.

"Well? How do you feel? Anything different?"

While waiting for her answer, Enzo decided to try one of Razzie's chips... if Thirteen didn't pull them away or anything.

Thirteen does, indeed, angle her hand away from Enzo a bit. She gives him a look, and a message.

Max holds up his left hand. "Hey, come on now, don't hog 'em. You already got some magic."

"Look, if no one else is gonna step up, I'll go ahead and test Razzie's chip." Nothing crazy seems to have happened to Sylvie, so at the very Least, Max was fairly certain that his hands weren't going to explode in fire or electricity or frost or something.

Enzo nodded, and stood with his hands clasped behind his back, not looking put off in the slightest. This was all still very exciting.

"Well then go on! Try them out already guys, what's everyone waiting for? Especially you, Darren. Someone said there's a punching power in there!"

He might regret that later, but Enzo couldn't much make himself care right now. This was cool!

Max slots in one of Razzie's chips, and confirms the advance.

He, too, doesn't feel horribly different. He's pretty sure he could do some pretty sweet jumps off of some logs or something though.

"I feel great!" she exclaimed. "Like fast - super, super fast!"

She grinned at the boys, and asked, "So, anybody wanna race?"

"Oh, you're not super fast." Thirteen says. "Yet."

Thirteen walks over, gently taking Silvie's arm, and slotting in two more chips, before taking a step back.

"Who-who-whooooooa!"

There's a sudden burst of light around Silvie, and when it fades, she's different. Her wunderkind uniform is replaced with a yellow jumpsuit with a big red stripe right through the middle (though, oddly enough, the wunderoos remain). Her thick, heavy gloves have been replaced with sleeker ones that go up to her elbows, and instead of her clunky boots she now has matching scarlet <i>rocket boots</i>. She fiddles around with her visor (also red), before a hand instinctively goes to her ponytail; now it's jutting straight out in a zig-zag shape, like a lightning bolt.

"Wow! How-how did it do this?!"

Thirteen smiles. "NOW you are super fast."

She continues, indicating Silvie. "Certain combinations will unlock certain super-human powers within your program. For the moment, Silvie is a super-speeder. Other combinations will present themselves as you collect more chips and become stronger."

"Huh." Max feels... jumpy. He tests it out with a little fancy footwork, like a boxer before a match. "Yeah, I definitely feel more... agile."

But before he can do anything fancier, Sylvie goes through her transformation.

"Wow."

"So, wait..." Max throws out a questioning hand towards Thirteen. "I get that our... physical appearance is more... malleable in the database. But when we go back out into the real world, if Sylvie's still got those three speed chips, will her mechanical body somehow magically change shape? Or will she just have the super-speed? Or are these chips strictly a digital-world-only thing?"

"The special combinations, as Sylvie has now, will only effect you here. But, the base chips themselves will work outside, still. Just not the bonuses granted by the combinations."

Stepping back from Junior to give him more room and hopefully make him less nervous, Sam takes one of Benji's chips after Silvie. He slots it in just after her, quickly feeling the same effects himself. Grinning at Silvie's transformation, and looks back to Thirteen. "You said there are a bunch of combinations? Does that mean there's a bunch of other chips too? Are they all from Juniorkind too?"

"Most, yes. But, as I said, you can make chips yourself, if you know how."

She smiled after a moment. "I won't be telling you that one."

[NebulaQueen]

"Okayokayokay, so! Now who wants to race?"

She grinned from ear to ear as she looked at all of them, before she settled on Max. She was just waiting for someone to accept her challenge.

Max raises an eyebrow at Sylvie's suggestion. "Woah, woah. So, like, I can fly and all, but you're like, all stripes and lightning hair over here. I'm not sure I can compete with that. If we're seriously gonna do this, I'm probably going to need those other two Razzie chips. Just for the race, though; I don't want to be a chip-hog."

Max pensively strokes his non-existant goatee. "We'd have to level the playing field a bit... say, race over the field, through some of the forest and back. There's some flat land where you've probably got the advantage and some obstacles where I'd have the advantage. In theory."

Emily looked thoughtful, "Do the chips work for flight as well? If we could combine them with our boosters, I'll bet we could get some serious speed in the air. Or in a standing jump as well." Either way, she was tempted to join in the race in the air, but without any obstacles at all, that would give her a seriously unfair advantage.

"A little, yes." Thirteen says.

"No boot-using if we're racing." Alexis said with a thoughtful nod, wiping the sludge-snow off her hands. "I wanna race too, I might need the training." She smiled a little as she stepped up to the others. "I just hope you guys won't get cold feet... heeeh." she grinned a little and shuffled her feet around.
