Magpie hadn't really minded carrying Shawn around, in fact she had offered to craft some kind of... well... belt or some such for the child to hold on to, but if rejected had not pursued the goal further. Instead, she'd listened in fascination as the dwarf and the cigarette-smoking child exchanged opinions, and made careful not inside her head to investigate the matter further when she had the time. She wasn't exactly sure how long these things had slept but, well, she'd been half-asleep for a pretty long time herself, so she didn't really see what the big deal was.

Anyway.

Stepping on to the hot-air balloon, Magpie probably didn't feel quite as nervous as the others, instead remarking calmly once again, "[color=Has it gotten colder?[/color]", idly looking around as the trip was done, reaching out towards the birds and ice observing them carefully, hoping to maybe touch one.

As they reached their goal, and at the prospect of coffee or teas, Magpie's opinion was firmly decided.

"I would not be opposed to the option of continuing on now."

"Absolutely," Asp said, quite willing to get going at once. He'd enjoyed the descent immensely, standing on tiptoes, pointing out various stuff he could see, and otherwise demonstrating a complete indifference to heights. Then he'd started chatting to the pilot, wanting to know how the balloon itself worked, along with what other sorts of transport there might be, beyond even those visible at the moment. Finding himself in possession of a captive informant, he went on to ask about the town and surrounding lands, what kept the town up, and other such questions.

Irregardless of the tolerance for said questions, he was quite willing to get moving after an hour of standing still.

"We might as well go as far as we can, now." Shawn says. As she does, she picks up Rocket, and opens her jacket just enough to put him inside with his head sticking out just under her own. Moving an arm to support him, she figures this will help keep both of them warmer.

Plane of Ice

With the party in slight disagreement, they split the difference, and Kongunvir is able to get a skin full of coffee for the walk. For the next few hours, it's a long trek across the glacial plain, interspersed with conversation here and there between the travelers. Phelan and Kongunvir are both new to the others, after all, and even amongst the more familiar guildmembers there's still untread anecdotes to exchange and stories to tell.

By now, the landing site is barely a dot on the horizon, Tiera Minuut barely visible in the sky. A light snowfall has begun, and the wind's started to pick up. There's been bare signs of motion here and there from the sparse local wildlife, and more ribbons of ice drifting about in the air, but no signs of paraelementals or other more frigid natives so far. Up ahead, a patch of slush lies alongside the road, drawing Florence's attention. "Hmm. I'd keep my distance from that. I read up some on the plane before we left, there's supposed to be tunnels here and there into the main mass of it. All this here?" She gestures across the entirety of the expanse. "This isn't the plane, this is just a border. The real stuff's straight down. If that's a tunnel, there's no telling how deep it goes. Might even go on forever."

Phelan:
Spoiler:
You don't remember seeing anything like that on your way to the balloon dock when you where going for help. But then again, it could be recent melt, or a collapsed sinkhole, or anything like that.

"Really? Forever?" Asp looked... intrigued, wandering over to take a look from a somewhat safe distance. "I guess since it never really gets above freezing, the snow just piles up year after year like a really big glacier. I wonder if it's moving at all. They say glaciers move, just really really slowly."

Phelan gives the slushy spot and odd look... and continues past it, disregarding it just as quickly. He wanted to get everyone to the town as quickly as possible after all, and investigating sinkholes seemed like a waste of time.

Magpie was looking at the spot of slush and... looked. "It leads to... more snow?" She shook her head and then continued after the others, keeping her shoulders as still as possibly so Shawn and Rocket wouldn't fall off... luckily her shield and backpack provided the perfect lean-against.

"Perhaps one of the ancients live there? The sleeping ones? ...that would be interesting to know."

Plane of Ice

Phelan passes by the puddle, giving it little notice. As he passes nearest to it, he can feel an aura of extreme cold radiating out from it, enough to freeze him a bit even through his fur. Before he can speak up about it, however, the surface of the puddle quivers for just an instant. A tendril of slush shoots out, slamming into Phelan's side with heavy force and sending a chill throughout his body, leaving a coat of frost on his side where the creature struck. It attempts to wrap itself around his torso, but Phelan manages to jump with the blow, avoiding the grab. The false puddle's tendril begins flailing about wildly, perhaps in anger. Luckily, it seems quite slow to react, giving the party a likely advantage against it.

Combat!

No map, since it's just a 10 foot circle thing in a big field of ice.

Phelan takes 1 point of damage from the creature's cold aura. It hits Phelan in the surprise round, dealing 13 points of normal damage and 7 points of cold damage.

"Keep your curiosity in check." he grumbled. "There's too many tales of fools who went sticking their heads down holes only to discover something better left undist-"

That was when the slush revealed itself to be something else, cutting him off mid-sentence. Shield and axe were in his hands almost instantly, the former still swathed in thick cloth, as he moved over towards the wolf to guard it against any further attacks.

"Don't get too close!" he snapped, making sure he obeyed his own advice.

(Moving over to Phaelen, readying an standard attack for when a tentacle tries to attack him, Kongunvir himself or anyone within his reach. Will otherwise be observing the creature and trying to determine what it is with Knowledge: Dungeoneering or, failing that, using Perception to observe anything of note about it. Including whether it can move or not.)

He recognised this thing. All those years of listening to his elders blather on about their own exploits had paid off.

"Cut or burn it! Don't bash it with anything, that'll just make it split!"

Well, that was just not on. Leaping out and attacking poor Phelan like that. Well, this icy creature would rue the day it had tangled with Asperel Brighteyes, wizard.

"I have just the thing," he said backing up slightly and reaching into his spell component pouch and producing some bat guano, "Everybody stand back."

Having made sure he had a nice clear blast radius, Asp cast a fireball at the creature.

Magpie looked a little shocked, sad maybe, when Kongunvir told her not to look down the goop, but right as she nodded it jumped out to attack Phelan! It attacked the doggy! Magpie glanced up at Shawn and Rocket and spoke with its usual, calm voice, "Shawn, it would be best if you came down from my shoulders, or you might get hurt." With that she drew her green-steel sword and shield, preparing to move closer to the slime after Asp had done his thing... she'd cut it, the dwarf seemed to know what he was talking about.

Phelan yelped in shock and pain when the icy tendril struck him. His entire side where he'd been struck was now frozen or frosted, and he wasn't reacting well to it. He made no move to go around the dwarf, instead hiding behind him and trying to remove some of the caked ice with his teeth. He didn't look particularly brave this way, but at least he was less of a liability with Kongunvir between him and the monster.

Round 1

Asp is the quickest to respond to the threat identified by Kongunvir, and he immediately begins casting, channeling the energies of magical flame against this creature. Unfortunately, manifesting such powers in a plane such as this requires an extra effort Asp wasn't quite prepared for, and his energies peter out to no apparent effect.

Phelan keeps behind Kongunvir for now, watching the ooze carefully, while Florence heeds Kongunvir's warning. "Don't bash it? Okay, does anyone have a spare dagger handy?" Shawn's quick to hop off Magpie, landing on the ground gracefully with Rocket tucked under one arm. She sets the cub down behind her as she charges in with her short sword, scoring a minor hit against the creature. She's unprepared for the radiated frigidness, however, and she can feel a freeze that hits her to her very core.

Kongunvir keeps his axe at the ready, watching the ooze for the first sign of an attack. Magpie doesn't bother waiting, slashing her sword across its form; all can hear the splinter of ice crystals under the impact. It seems that this creature, while large, has little to no ability to dodge or even block attacks, thankfully for the party. While she too feels the effects of its chilling aura, it doesn't seem to have as much of an effect on her; it's painful, but not quite as much so. Rocket watches from a safe distance, while the creature slaps towards Shawn. Kongunvir takes the chance to jump into action, slashing the pseudopod with his axe. He severs a small portion of the tentacle in one blow with the sound of more snapping ice, and the separated blob falls to the ground, shattering on impact. While it alone isn't enough to deflect the strike, Shawn's natural grace more than makes up for it. She easily jumps back from the attack, and the ooze strikes the ice uselessly.

Asp casts Fireball, fails impeded spell check, spell fizzles
Phelan stays behind Kongunvir
Florence holds back
Shawn hops off Magpie with Rocket, and stabs the ooze. She hits for 1 damage. She fails her Fortitude save, and takes 6 damage from the cold aura.
Kongunvir readies an action.
Magpie attacks, hitting for 17 damage. She fails her Fortitude save, and takes 2 damage from the cold aura.
Rocket stays back carefully.
The ooze strikes at Shawn. Kongunvir attacks the ooze in response, hitting for 5 damage. The ooze misses Shawn.

From observing the effects on those affected so far, the ooze's cold aura seems to extend about five feet around it on all sides.

Asp regarded his fingers for a moment as if they had betrayed him. That certainly hadn't been right. The creature was supposed to go up in flames. Clearly he was going to have to account for impeded magic in the future. It was only fair, he conceded reluctantly; Pretty well everything on the plane must be vulnerable to fire, so it made sense they'd be protected from it. They were just going to have to do things the hard way.

With that thought in mind, Asp darted forwards, the words of a spell on his lips, and struck the creature with his hand. Lightning certainly shouldn't be impeded.

(Shocking grasp)

Round 2

He can feel this spell indeed work as intended; however, he stumbles as he approaches the ooze, and his attack goes wide. His hand still crackles with sparking energy, ready to be applied perhaps more successfully next time. The creature's icy emanations strike both him and Nora, and the familiar quickly decides that however cold it is outside Asp's pack, it's better than being that close to this creature. She falls back to Rocket, deciding to watch the combat from a safe distance instead.

Asp casts Shocking Grasp, attacks the ooze, misses. Spell charge is held. He fails his Fortitude save, and takes 4 damage from the cold aura. Nora fails her Fortitude save, and takes 2 damage from the cold aura; she retreats back with Rocket.

Magpie did not have a dagger on her, unfortunately, and considered replying to Florence, but quickly calculated the unnecessary nature of such an action, instead she moved to help cover Asp, who was distinctively more 'fleshy' than her and had taken far more of a beating...

Which didn't mean that Maggie herself was feeling well. The sudden and horrible cold had gotten to her badly, and she was almost losing control as her mind struggled to understand this strange... pain? She'd felt pain before, but not like this, Hoshi had been right about how she would become more sensitive.

Realizing not much good was going to happen with her just standing there, she lashed out with her two-handed sword again, her shield still on her back as she neglected defense for raw strength. It was unnerving to see the warforged fight, as there was a sense of... brutal efficiency in her style. There were no fancy maneuvers, no art, no personality. Her fighting style was sparse, reserved in movement and extremely efficient. Like a machine.

"Prodding it won't do any good!" Kongunvir called out in response to Florence. "Cut it apart!"

The ooze was a simple foe, though by no means a trivial one. The longer they took to hack it to pieces the larger the chance it'd inflict a serious injury. He pressed the attack, trusting in his ancestors and their gift to keep his safe as he brought his axe down on the monster.

(Use Problem Solver as a swift action to gain the Shield Focus feat, use Power Attack for a -2 attack penalty/+4 damage and make a Standard Attack. If the ooze attacks him he'll take a 5-foot step away as an immediate action, otherwise he'll stay in melee.)

Phelan had managed to remove most of the ice from himself, and quickly shook off the rest. He didn't feel much better, but he could move freely. He swerved around Kongunvir and charged the thing responsible for his hurts, intent on taking at least a bite out of it. He hadn't forgotten that just being close to it again would hurt, but now everyone else was getting hurt too and the thing wasn't just up and dying on them. He felt obligated to get back in and help.

(Charge, bite.)

Round 2

Phelan charges in, and easily grabs the ooze in his jaws, clamping down tightly. It tastes like nothing more than slimy snow, and he can feel the substance of the creature crack under his force. It falls from his mouth, yet the crack continues to spread, running down the length of the creature.

"I don't have something to c-" Florence watches as the creature - creatures, now, two oozes each half the size of the original - pull themselves into circular forms, splitting apart from one another as ripples rise and fall across their surfaces.

Phelan charges at the ooze and attacks. He hits for 6 damage. The ooze splits. He fails his Fortitude save, and takes 4 damage from the cold aura.

Shawn sighed as the thing split into two, and began rummaging in her pack. "No, just...Just stop. I'll handle this."

She pulls out a milky looking white potion, and chugs it. "Seriously. Just stand back now. I've got it."

Round 2

Shawn quaffs a potion; her form shifts as she takes the form of humanoid fire. The ice beneath her feet quickly begins to steam, and both oozes immediately withdraw, attempting to keep their distance from her. Still, though, her new form comes with its own problems, as their cold emanations seem to hit her even harder than before.

Magpie and Kongunvir each strike out at one of the two oozes, and though both strike solid blows, neither ooze is felled just yet. One whips a tendril at Phelan, who quickly hops out of the way. The other strikes at Asp, and Florence leaps to action, shoving the kender out of the way. The pseudopod wraps around Florence's form, lifting her into the air as it tries to squeeze the life out of her; from the look of Florence, it seems to be coming fairly close.

Shawn drinks a potion, and transforms into a fire elemental. She fails her Fortitude save, and takes 6 damage (double damage) from the cold aura.
Magpie attacks Ooze 1, and hits for 19 damage.
Rocket remains back.
Kongunvir attacks Ooze 2, and hits for 11 damage.
Ooze 1 attacks Phelan, and misses.
Ooze 2 attacks Asp. Florence bull rushes Asp in response, and succeeds, pushing Asp 5 feet away. Ooze 2 hits Florence for 8 damage + 7 cold damage. It attempts a grapple, and succeeds. It constricts for 6 damage + 4 cold damage. Florence passes her Fortitude check, and takes 1 damage from the ooze's cold aura.

Magpie took a quick step forward as Florence was caught by the thing, her movement almost entirely mechanical now, fluid yet with a sort of rigid, straight movement that hinted at her background as a machine made for one single purpose. She rushed forward, uncaring for any harm that could occur to her (a small subroutine of her mind was struggling to figure out why she wasn't being more careful, that had hurt) and raising her blade something clicked inside her mind and she saw the path her blade would take even before she struck. Swinging the baatorian-steeled greatsword she slashed at the creature holding Florence.

(Magpie is using Problem Solver to temporarily learn Great Cleave, and is then using it on the slime thing)

"Hey!" Asp shouted, lashing out at the ooze which had grabbed Florence. The silly mindless thing (or things) didn't know when they were beaten. Although, come to think of it, they weren't looking all that beaten. Still, at least the pair were smaller than before.

It took a moment for Kongunvir to realise that the child being on fire was all part of her plan. Circumstances didn't give him the luxury of being alarmed in any case, especially now that the ooze had split. Had the mutt run head first into it? It didn't matter. Florence was going to pop like an over-ripe piece of fruit unless someone cut her free.

(Still Power Attack-ing, attack directed at the ooze constricting Florence. Trying to sever the pseudopod that's got a hold of her if possible and, if he's able to, using Cleave afterwards to attack the second ooze.)

Phelan backed off, confused. The dwarf had said that swords and knives would work. His teeth were like knives, why had it made things worse?! He moved out of everyone's way, watching Florence with concern and frustration.

Shawn flares up, her hair waving and whipping around like fire, as she poses dramatically at the thing that's got Florence. "You've just made a big mistake. Now I'm all fired up to take you down."

She charges towards that thing, and basically jumps into it, using her body to burn the hell out of it.

Round 3

Stepping back up, Asp reaches for the ooze holding Florence, jolting it much more easily with his enchanted charge this time; its surface spasms from the electric shock, as Florence tries to take the change to pull free. The frigid aura of the creature seems too much for his dagger, though; already poorly made, he can hear it snap in two in his belt sheathe. Phelan backs carefully away, watching for any strikes from the oozes, while Shawn leaps onto one of the oozes. It shrivels and boils away at her contact, and its tentacle falls limp, though Shawn fares little better from being so close to the creature. Florence falls to the ground without further injury, gasping for air. Magpie directs her force against the other, all but splattering it into nothing.

Florence stays sitting for now, still gasping for air as she looks between everyone in the party. "...Everyone all right? Guess I was...wrong." She laughs a bit, wincing, obviously still injured from the attack.

Asp strikes Ooze 2 with Shocking Grasp, hits for 12 damage. He fails his Fortitude save with a natural 1, and takes 2 damage from the cold aura; his dogslicer shatters.
Phelan backs away.
Shawn leaps onto Ooze 2, dealing 8 fire damage (double damage) to Ooze 2. She fails her Fortitude save, and takes 12 damage (double damage) from the cold aura. Ooze 2 is killed.
Magpie attacks Ooze 1. She hits, dealing 13 damage. She passes her Fortitude check, and takes 2 damage from the ooze's cold aura. Ooze 1 is killed.

"No permanent harm done, I hope." Kongunvir said as he walked over to Florence, stowing his axe and offering a hand to help her back onto her feet. "I think the worst anyone else got was a bruised rib and a bit of a chill."

Plane of Ice

Florence takes the help, grimacing, but still surprisingly steady. "Thankfully for us, then. What was that, anyway?" She heads over to Shawn, as does Rocket, the ice still hissing beneath her feet. A puddle of water begins to slowly gather beneath Shawn, though it's still too cold to steam. "I think it's all right for you to change back now, Shawn." She smiles, starting to reach out before realizing that for someone made of fire right now, that's probably not the best idea. "You'll feel better too, I bet."

Meanwhile, Nora hops back to Asp, careful to keep a good distance between herself and Phelan. She clambers up his back before diving back into his pack, settling back into her warm nook, making some sort of cat-like (but not quite) noises.
Spoiler:
"You should be more careful with things that grab. It might have eaten you! And then me!"

Magpie promptly cleaned the blade of her sword with a small rag before sheathing it, walking over to where Shawn was standing and looking somewhat curious.

"Is this like the time when you were turned into a cat-person, Shawn?" she asked politely as she gently petted Rocket behind the ear, "are you stuck in this form as well? If such is the case, I would like to voice the opinion that perhaps it is better not to turn into other things."

"It's alright, Nora," Asp said, "I'm sure somebody would've pulled me out before I got eaten. After all, we managed to free Florence pretty quickly." Recalling that rather final-sounding snap, he pulled that oversized knife of his free of its sheath. Or at least he pulled about half of it free; the rest was no longer attached. Oh well, he'd just have to find a new one somewhere.

"Say, that was a neat trick," he remarked, turning his attention to Shawn, "I guess the plane doesn't care so much if you turn yourself into fire, rather than throwing it at stuff." He'd have to remember that little loophole.

"Yes, that is a most....interesting display." Kongunvir added, satisfied that Florence was fit enough for travel. "I imagine that's some sort of sorcery you're using?"

Shawn turns back to her normal form, still shivering. "Maybe that wasn't such a good idea, after all."

If she heard Dwarfy's question, she didn't make any indication of it.

Plane of Ice

Taking a blanket out from her pack, Florence drapes it around Shawn, hoping it'll help keep her warm. The party continues forth, pressing on from the encounter with the snowflake ooze across the endless glacier with Phelan leading the way. The wind's picked up even more; even with their winter wear, it's not the most comfortable of environments. Finally, the sourceless light begins to dim, as night starts to fall. Camp is set, and the party does their best to start a small fire, to give them at least some additional warmth. It's a tricky feat on a sheet of ice, but with a bit of ingenuity they manage it.

Night falls, as does the temperature, but in their tents and bedrolls they're warm enough to make it through the night, though all but Asp are a little stiff in the morning. No natives bothered them over night, though a curious family of foxes did wander through during one person's guard duty. The next day seems a little warmer than previous, though perhaps that's simply their imagination after the chill of the night. Not long after a brief breakfast, they break camp, pushing onwards. It's still not yet midday before Phelan sights the village on the horizon; before long, the rest of the party can see it themselves. From what they can spy, there are perhaps two dozen buildings, most all made largely of ice, one or two on the edge appearing to have collapsed - damage Phelan recalls having been there when he first left. The smaller ones look to simply be igloo-style dwellings, other larger ones look more traditional in style but for their building material. One even seems to be two stories tall, an impressive piece of construction for ice. The sole exception they can see is a single stone building in the middle of the settlement, a squat meeting hall that looks large enough to fit the entire populace if need be. There's no signs of people out and about, but no signs of the creatures Phelan described either. Still, they can see smoke coming from chimneys set in a few of the buildings, including the meeting hall; there must still be someone here, at least.

"Well then, looks like there's people around," Asp said, cheerfully impervious to the weather, or indeed any sense of foreboding. "Let's see what they can tell us." With that, he led the way down into the village, making for the meeting hall.

Kongunvir eyed the settlement. "Doesn't look much like a village under siege. Why aren't the guards at their posts?"

Magpie had quickly had to accept the fact that she wasn't all but impervious to the environment and the weather any longer, and being cold was an all together new feeling for her. In fact, she had no idea how to handle it, and had merely rolled herself up in as many blankets and pieces of cloth as she could during the night, barring she'd keep the others cold. So when dawn broke, she had some trouble getting out of the tangled mess of cloth, but when she did she seemed somewhat... unsettled by it all.

"I believe I am suffering from some manner of damaging spell..." she concluded as they were packing up stuff, "A magician may be intending us ill will, although the power of the spell should be considered fairly weak..." Unless asked about this, she went about her business as usual, with her eyes continuously scanning the horizon for signs of this ill-willed magic-monger, but as they came to the town she seemed to cease her search for the moment.

"Perhaps it is a trap to lure travellers? Keep some fires to appear inviting, and lure us into an ambush. It was a strategy I encountered during the Blood Wars. It did not work on us."

As the travelers make their way across the frozen landscape, they may notice something falling out of the sky...Specifically in their direction.

It's a small object with a light blue glowing field around it. It seems to be giving off a strange, melodic humming, as it gets closer, and closer...And they realize it wasn't that far in the first place. Whatever that thing is, it's pretty small. It begins to slow it's descent, before coming to an abrupt stop just above ground in front of them, and smashing down into the ice.

"It" appears to be a child, about Shawn's age, but very different in appearance. She appears to be female...As far as anyone can guess. She's wearing a very..form fitting white outfit, with large, clunky light blue gloves, boots, and a strange mid-section piece that might appear awkward to some. She's got a white and blue cloak billowing behind her, and a black, strange looking eye-patch covering her left eye.

Her light blue hair billows in the wind, as a number of oddly shaped blades swirl behind her for a moment, before floating close to her back, coming to a rest. She looks over the group one by one, flatly, before asking:

"You are not from this land. I assume you have come to search, as well?"
