Alexis listened and watched with wide eyes as mr. Rivendare did his presentation of the PDA, her arms behind her back as Janet popped up on the display. Wow, that seemed really cool, and they could travel around like that too? She glanced at Sam as he asked his questions and nodded in agreement, those were reasonable sounding stuff to ask, and she tried really hard to think up some questions too...

Finally, she had a question and held up her hand, "C... can it change colors when we change the c-colors of our u-u-uniforms too?"

Rivendare shakes his head. "You can't change your uniform's colors on the fly out here, we have to take them into the shop and actually repaint them."

"Two things: One, last mission we got access to our weapons. Fortunately we didn't need them, but what's the status on our real-world weapons? Also, when are Emmy and I going to get a chance to try out our pilot abilities? The Database is woefully vehicle-free."

Rivendare nodded. "You'll have a chance here, soon. As for your weapons, they're locked within city limits unless we preauthorize it beforehand. Janet can do it from here, too."

While Rivendare talked, Lauren felt around the back of her neck curiously, trying to locate the port.

"We have a firing range set up for you." Rivendare says, before adding very pointedly, "Later."

Lauren finds the port quite easily. It's a little strange to feel it there on her neck, but at least it's easy to locate it.

"Any other questions before we move on?" Rivendare asks.

Max is full of curiosity. It's difficult to even figure out what to ask.

"So, I'm not sure what exactly we're 'moving on' to first, but... I think some of us were wondering exactly what was up with that news story about D52 having a press release for project Bluesky. Are we going to be there for that? Also: I'm sure we'll be meeting our handlers soon, but... is there any chance we might get to see our parents at some point in the not-too-distant future?"

Max glances over at Darren, and suddenly feels super-awkward for having asked that second question.

Alexis remained quiet, having no further questions to ask. She'd clean forgotten about the press-conference, but she was sure the kids with rocket packs and big guns would be more interesting than her...

Max was confused about Rivendare's counter-question, but moreso he was excited about his parents already being here.

"That's awesome! But, umm... our newsfeed said 'D-52 has begun to put out press releases concerning their Bluesky project.' so... you know, I just assumed..."

"It said that, specifically?" Rivendare asks. "Someone must've gotten something crossed somewhere. You guys are more or less secret until we can't cover it up anymore, which will hopefully be a long while yet. I don't think any of you want to be fingered specifically as being super powered androids or anything until you're all good and ready, huh?"

Alexis wasn't really expecting any to come meet her either, but she didn't share Darren's grumpiness, she'd had plenty of time to try to come to terms with her own loss during her time in the... in... before she came to the Project, and even afterwards she'd gotten used to the fact that she was alone.

Maybe that's why she wasn't... entirely comfortable with being around the others, because she'd... accepted being by herself. All those years before the project, and then her solitary training... she'd gotten so used to it that...

But when she'd thought that D52 had had her parents killed...

No, she was going to meet her handler, and then she was going to visit her family... and then she was coming back.

"C...can we g-go now?"

"Look," Rivendare sighs, frowning at Darren. "We obviously couldn't just hoist you onto someone. You're wards of D-52 now, so it's not like you're unwanted or anything. He glares at nothing in particular, as if thinking about something. "It could be worse. Anyway, let's go."

Rivendare leads the kids out of that room, and down a short hall. There's a number of technicians, almost all of which stop and say hello as the group passes. Eventually, he turns into the next room.

Within, it seems to be very much like a locker room, except..Quite a bit more high tech. The lockers are really small, personal areas in and of themselves, with a number of boxes and other storage nearby, and the kid's names on the walls of their designated areas. "Go ahead and check out your kit, make sure it's right. Also, you've all got a few gifts from the Man Upstairs. Go ahead and wait here, and I'll go grab your handlers and your parents."

Emily couldn't help but be relieved that they weren't going to be revealed to the public just yet. She didn't think any of them were ready for that kind of attention, and she'd much rather see her family before the press anyway. As she'd expected, Darren wasn't exactly brimming over with enthusiasm for anything (beyond weapons testing of course). There must be some way of bringing him out of his shell, but she wasn't keen on spending her first day out in the world trying to jolly him along. No, Darren could wait for a bit.

The gifts were a neat surprise. She'd have to set up a digital copy of the lava lamp in her room; it'd really brighten up the place. The bike would be great for getting around on. But the key was a complete surprise. It was one thing to be trained on vaious vehicles, it was quite another to be given her own car. That was going to take a bit of getting used to.

"Oh, wow!" Looking through his locker, Sam pulls out a fancy-looking baseball bat, painted to match his costume's color scheme. "This is so cool! Hey, Enzo, look! ...Oh, wow, and it's got stuff to make me hit better too! This is so cool, I can't wait to try it." He steps back inside, setting the bat carefully against the locker wall. "Oh wow, and there's a bike too!" Grinning, he emerges, looking around at everyone else and their gifts. "What kinda stuff did all of you get?"

Alexis trotted in behind the others, having waved shyly to the techs that said hello, and when they came to the locker-room-area place, her eyes grew wide as they were shown the boxes and things that were theirs.

She was a little unsure, but as the others dove into their things she joined in, and found a teddy! It was Percival, in all his glory, but real! She gave him a tentative snug and... yes! Yes, that was definitely Percival! Holding him in on hand tightly she continued open her packages, finding a blanket! This was new... but... yes! It was soft, and warm, so it was awesome. She half-wrapped Percival in the soft, soft blankie and looked at the final box...

Wow.

A... bike?

She looked a the others? Wow... WOW! She didn't even know how to ride a bike but oh my god there were super reinforced training wheels oh my god oh my god! And a flag! And those rattling things in the spokes! WOAH!

This was... whoah.... she looked back at Rivendare, somewhat... dumbfounded.

"This is... m-mine?"

Rivendare nods, looking over the lockers. He seems to notice, as the children might have, that there are substantially more locker areas still unused. But, he answers after a moment. "This is a very big complex, and this floor is basically your own. With how big it is, a lot of the employees use bikes to get around. We figured you guys would probably like these. They're reinforced to handle your weight, but be very careful not to run into anyone."

This was a pretty swanky locker room. Max had seen some pretty lame locker rooms as a junior soccer player, but nothing even remotely approaching all this much high tech and personal space. He passes by Alexis and Sam's spaces, and finds his right next to Emily's. It's a nice space and all, for a locker room, but it could use a little personalization. The lava lamp was a nice touch, but it was definitely going to need a couple posters.

Apparently all the kids were getting specially reinforced bikes for getting around the hugeness of D52, which was pretty cool. Max noticed that most of the bikes were standard street/city bikes, but his was... special. It was a dual-suspension all-mountain bike with a slightly shorter wheel base to make handling, and more importantly, showing off easier. It might not be quite as fast as the street bikes, but it would be a lot more fun. It was a sexy machine, and Max was sure his handler Dominic had something to do with it.

As he admired his custom mountain bike, Max suddenly realized that, as awesome as it was, it wasn't motorized, much less computerized. Sure it would be fun, but not as much fun as something with more muscle. He looked around his own space, and noticed a small package next to his lava lamp that he had missed before. He approached it with curious enthusiasm, and then opened it with more enthusiasm. Inside, he found a key with the Bluesky logo on it, and a note with the message "Try not to crash it."

"Oh Hell yeah!"

Enzo had to laugh a little at Sam's enthusiasm. It was just infectious, he couldn't help it. He opened his own locker and took a look around. Inside was a bike, like everyone else, and a laptop. Well, that was interesting. He began looking for the power button... when it turned itself on. Huh. He looked at it curiously as it booted up. Maybe it had a Camera and had turned on due to the movement? He didn't see one, though. It came to the log-in screen and paused, waiting for input. He knew what he'd want to use, of course, but to ask if there was a default he needed to put in first. Just as he turned to ask, he heard the start up noise. He looked back. It was logging him in as RhythmArtisan. He'd just come up with that; Rivendare and his techs couldn't have known it. Which meant he was doing it. He was controlling the laptop, with his brain. Way more intuitively than anything else he'd done so far, too. That's when he knew exactly how Sam felt, and he started to spazz just as much.

"Sam looklooklooklook! I'm not touching anything and it's doing things and I think I'm changing the interface right now with my brain look!"

This was officially awesome.

Sam darts over at Enzo's call, watching with amazement as he shows off the psychic laptop. "Oh, wow! That's so cool, Enzo! That's awesome! What kinda stuff can you do? Can you make stuff like in the Database? Oh, your bike looks really good too! We should go ride then around tonight!"

Janet walks over to join the two, towing her bike along with her. In hand, she's also got something that strongly resembles a "Protodex", from that "Protomon" fad, with all the monsters fighting eachother and whatnot. "I got this pretty neat dictionary. Point, click, and get definitions. Should be pretty handy."

Lauren's bicycle was a work of art. Comfortable, stylishly pink, and equipped with a basket on the handlebars, perfect for transporting small items and/or ferrets. It also had pink streamers coming from the handgrips, which Lauren had always thought was a no-brainer. Why wouldn't you put streamers on them? Although she'd heard that no one in high school rode that kind of bike. They were all boring designs in boring colors, so maybe she'd be too old for it soon. . .

Oh, wait.

Man, being a superhero was going to be even better than she'd thought!

The other gift was...kind of creepy. It was a doll. Of her. A miniature version of herself. Ambassador Leafshade sniffed at it cautiously. It seemed they both agreed it was weird to see a copy of yourself sitting out there like that. Lauren picked it up and fiddled with it half-heartedly. All the limbs seemed to have full range of motion, even the head could look left and right, and...

There was an indentation in the back of the figure. It felt familiar, somehow... Lauren felt around the back of her neck. Ohhhhhhhhhhhh

Lauren squealed with delight and rushed over to the others. "Ohmigosh it's a smaller version of me and look it has the same port as our PDAs so I bet I can go inside it and get small in real life! This is so cool!!

Alexis had been too flabberghasted by her awesome, urban-camo super-bike that she'd missed the PDA pocket on the back of her teddy. But as Lauren revealed the PDA slot in her doll, she realized she'd felt something similar to it and, yes! There it was! She turned mr Percival around and looked at it curiously before she looked back at her own, PDA, colored just like she is... she resists the temptation to start fiddling with it right now, she'll have plenty of time later after all, and carefully unzips the back of Percival and gently slides the PDA in, making sure it's tucked in safely before she zips the teddy closed again... and returns to watching the other kids, wide-eyed in wonder at all the awesome things everyone's getting.

Max's own PDA was probably in his locker-space somewhere, and normally he'd be checking up with everyone else and all their excited squeals, but he had a singular focus on his mind. Even though Rivendare was only a few steps away, Max hopped on his bike and sped over to the bossman, circling around him once, coming to rest in front of him. He holds up his shiny new key, dangling by its attached ring from his ring finger, and asks, beaming: "Does this mean what I think it means?"

At this news, Max starts to beam even brighter. Then the full weight of what Rivendare just said sunk in and his expression turned to a wry grin.

"You know what? You're all right, Byron. Kind of a goof, but still."

Max loops around and pedals on over to the others; specifically Enzo, who he's not used to hearing in full-on giddy mode.

Rivendare thrusts his hands into his pockets, and glances towards the ceiling. As he does, the door is opened by a smaller woman. She's got black hair, pale skin, and slightly oddly shaped eyes. She whistles to get Rivendare's attention before speaking. "There are issues at hand, Byron. There appears to be a problem with Juliet and Marco, and the Tropical government is on the phone about Kidritta, again."

Rivendare mutters something, either not realizing or not caring that the kids audio sensors would pick it up. "Shit."

He frowns, sauntering towards the door and rubbing his chin. "I'll go take care of Marco. Can you handle Juliet? And have that asshole Azlo put on hold for an hour and then disconnected. Or better yet, reroute him to tech support."

He turns towards the kids again, smiling and opening his arms wide. "Well, kiddos, I gotta go. You all have my phone number if you need me, call any time. Just...Give me like an hour, okay? Heh."

He begins to make his way out, before looking over his shoulder. "One more thing. This entire floor is your HQ. Make yourselves at home. If you want to see if your parents or handlers are ready, talk to Alice in the main lobby on this floor. She's our secretary. And remember, stay on this floor unless you want to go public early!"

With that, he heads out.

Janet makes a face as the rest of the techs seem satisfied with the kids bodies and make their way out. "That was weird. Do you think...Maybe we should, I dunno, try to figure out what any of those things they were talking about were?"

(Sorry for continued CI, but there is some plot now I PROMISE.

Further: Worldly educated characters would recognize the woman as being from Chinzei, a country far to the east. Even more educated (ENZO) would know her to be the Ace of Hearts, Anka Retonik.)

Sam looks up at the door, about to speak when he sees just who it is that came inside. Before he can greet his handler, though, she starts talking to Rivendare, and Sam realizes she was here for something else just now. After Rivendare leaves, and Janet speaks up, he looks to her with some confusion. "I dunno." Sam shrugs, looking back to the door. "D'you think everything's okay with Kid? How come people are bugging Mr. Rivendare about her d'you think? Maybe people are mad at her? I hope she's not in trouble or anything for not coming out with everyone."

Alexis was surprised by the woman's entrance, and listened attentively, a bit too much perhaps (...shit? That's a naughty word!), looking worried as Rivendare seemed to be upset about something...

And Kidritta? Tropical government? Were they angry about something? She clutched her teddy and blanket tight as she looked at the others, wondering if they'd been thinking about the same things as her. What if they were going to take Kidritta away? And who were Juliet and Marco?

Once mr Rivendare and the woman had left, she looked around their HQ and smiled a little nervously.

"D-Do you think they w-want us to know? W-won't they be upset i-if we go l-l-looking into things they d-don't want us to know?"

She turned to Sam, "M-maybe they wanted her to have a b-body by now? Or... if she's t-training, she's l-lonely"

Enzo had been happily geeking out and showing off with his laptop for Sam and anyone who cared to watch, right up until the word "shit". Thirteen was still old enough to look up and take note when someone said it, and he had. From there he listened to everything that everyone had said carefully.

He couldn't guess who Juliet and Marco were, but that was alright. Rivendare had talked about them right in front of the whole group, so it likely wasn't some big secret; He'd just ask later. As for Kid...

"I doubt she's in trouble. Not exactly. She was bitten in half, remember? While filming a movie about surfing... or something. Anyway, the people there are probably just mad and confused about where she's gone. They can't exactly file an obituary for her, since she's still alive, right? I'll bet the movie company is based there, or if it's not they're trying to hold the local government responsible. Or, heck, it could be simpler than that. Movies make publicity. There's no way the movie has been finished yet, so no extra tourists this season. Mr. Rivendare wasn't taking the call very seriously, so he can't have much respect for their concerns. In any case, it should all clear up once we go public. Right?"

As a matter of curiosity, he did a search on the tropical government and local news for that area on his new laptop. Maybe they were making some complaint publicly?

"They might be genuinely worried about her," Emily said, "I mean, this is all pretty revolutionary stuff, and they've only got D-52's word for it that it works at all. Although they were the ones who brought her here in the first place, so it doesn't leave them much to complain about."

Huh. Rivendare's got a bit of a mouth on him. Not surprising for a guy who ripped the sleeves off his business suit. Still, adults usually seem to go out of their way to clean up their language around minors.

Max stands his bike and gives Emmy the eyebrow. "Come on, do you really think the 'tropical government' gives a crap about one person? I think Silvie's got it right. If they're worried about anything, it's about lost profits from Kid's movies, or about violations of international law or something. There's people with a lot of money who lose a lot by losing Kid, and they're more motivated by greed than basic human decency."

Max senses an oncoming glare and decides to run some preemptive damage control. "... I'm sure her parents are worried about her, though. Probably some people who actually worked with her, too."

Time for a tactical topic-change. Max turns to group at large. "So, any ideas on who this Marco is? And what the 'problem' with Janet might be?"

Alexis had to process what Enzo and the others had said before she calmed down a bit, nodding. Yeah, that made... an awful lot of sense, and she was once again reminded that Enzo was a lot smarter than she could ever hope to be... she'd have to ask him about programming later, she still wasn't entirely sure what the text-files called variables and how much you could do with them... she'd tried inventing her own, but the applet had been pretty harsh about what constituted a definition of a variable, and she wasn't going to start fiddling with the programming language herself... maybe she should try a more advanced language? ...or a more basic one?

She gave a little shake of her head, realizing she'd lost herself in thought.

"Y-yeah... it's p-probably not a big deal... t-to mr Rivendare a-anyway..."

Enzo tried to look casual as he stood there, a new news report filing into his head. He was getting an update from one of his applets in the database he kept himself connected to when he could. IT was almost redundant, but the lack of reaction from the other kids meant they hadn't got it... if they had, he was sure they would have said something. Many things.

He tried to keep it off his face... He didn't want to panic everyone. It could be some other weapon.... Some other secret. They'd been wrong about the press release, after all, he and the others. No, don't blow things out of proportion again. And ask Rivendare. He would do that.

He realized he'd been still and silent for a little too long. Sam was still there.

"So, uhm... I think I want to go meet my handler."

He closed up his laptop with a smile, and went to go do just that.

After a thoughtful pause, Sam nods to Enzo's decision. "I think I'm gonna go too, so I can see Mom. An' when I see my handler, I can ask her about that stuff about Kid; that was her that Rivendare was talking to, so I bet she'll know. An' I'll tell you guys what she said, okay?" Following behind Enzo, Sam heads out to the waiting room, nervous but excited.
