Zant focused his studies on the exact nature of the crime in question. The difference between possession and intent to distribute, past cases involving the substance and recorded uses of it. The library was a strange and wondrous thing to him. His people had been aquatic and nomadic, much of their lore being passed on aurally, and thus had little use for weighty tomes or carvings.

Indeed, Magpie found the library quite satisfying as to its curiosity. It had spent many, many years guarding a single patch of land, and although the tomes and parchments of its deceased master had remained in the camp, it had never once touched them, for that would bring upon a dereliction of duty. To be able to freely read, that was a great freedom indeed, and the construct set at carefully working through book after book, absorbed so utterly in reading old records of ancient and utterly dry trials of law, small and convoluted changes made to legal documents and the occasional twist that might have risen during the many years the library has been collecting these documents.

Occasionally the construct would close the book it was reading gently, a small slip of parchment in place, to retrieve another one, which had been references, and after just a little while the table it was seated at was literally cluttered with half-read books, the warforged having fetched every single reference to another book in the ones it had been reading.

Garick was glad to have found the Underground, and though some of the sights made him a tad uncomfortable, he was still more comfortable here than he was in Automata proper. At least here there wasn't much chance of him randomly being arrested for loitering or something. He walked about, taking in the sights, odd and not, avoiding the more unnecessarily seedy places and finally found himself a "nice" little "tavern," complete with alcohol that had more of a kick than the piss water they sold in the tavern they'd been at before and scantily clad women of every race that were more than willing to bear what they had to offer. Garick wondered if the others were enjoying the sights. He sure was.

Lorraine, as usual, was trying to track down clues related to her lost home in the Prime. She was starting to lose hope that she would find anyone who knew anything about her little backwater, but she hadn't lost so much that she was ready to quit searching. While she worked on that, she'd show Asp around to anything he showed an interest in, and she'd tend to Aaron as necessary.

Asp was a person of many and varied interests, including but not limited to maps, interesting spells and whatever it was that Lorraine was doing. Naturally, he offered to lend a hand, under the theory that two people would surely get any research done faster. Which might or might not be true, given a certain propensity to ask irrelevant questions about Lorraine's home.

Automata - Public Law Library

There's few specific results for Zant to consult, as it seems that alchemical silver was only (relatively) recently illegalized within Automata. However, with Magpie's occasional help (when it can avoid veering off into unrelated side digressions in its studies), he's able to study into the more general case law surrounding trafficking in illegal substances. Past trials have had some minor degree of success in arguing from a perspective of character in order to determine that a person wasn't the sort to pursue such means; unfortunately, considering Hoshi's low opinion of the government, that may not pay off well. Demonstrating beyond doubt the intent to use a substance for otherwise-legal means rather than intending sale could also be a valid defense, provided Zant could prove that; a lofty order. Lack of evidence beyond the quantity of the material does seem to also support his side.

As for general trial knowledge, Zant does his best to familiarize himself with basic trial procedure. It covers such a huge ground that it's unable to look into more than just the basics, but he now at least has a solid grounding by which to proceed. Perhaps Magpie could help directly in this; it does seem to take in information much more rabidly and assimilate it much more efficiently than Zant. Further, unfortunately for Zant and Hoshi both, it appears that they will be forced to proceed on wholly logical and argumentative grounds; while magical means for determining truth are allowed in trials, they are given no more weight than expert testimony due to the numerous ways by which they could be beaten. Even the most powerful such spells are not foolproof, after all.

Automata - Underground

Passing the time in one of the Underground's numerous watering holes, Garick takes in his surroundings. Even as a half-dressed elf with the dirt of months of travel clinging to him, he blends in surprisingly well. It would appear he's not the only such sort to prefer and even enjoy this part of the gate town. And indeed, while the drink above certainly isn't all of poor quality - one must keep in mind that both dwarves and hobgoblins have lawful inclinations, among other renown brewers, after all - the drink available down here does hit him much harder and much more quickly. It's not long before he's lost in a haze thanks to the nameless beer on tap. Despite the lack of law, though, there's a somewhat surprising lack of violence here. Of course, since this is one of the "nicer" places down here, perhaps they simply wish to avoid the eye of the Council. Leggis's thugs are quick to respond to violence with kind to keep their own special brand of "order", from what he's overheard.

He drains his most recent flagon, and within seconds of dropping it to the table, one of the wenches at this establishment comes up yet again. Though she's been serving him all night, he hasn't yet caught her name, but he still recognizes her easily. A voluptuous red-haired human woman in black with a hint of a Bytopian accent, he can see the wrinkles of weariness and age that line her eyes, despite the fact that she looks to be barely 30, if even that. She puts on a grin that even in his drunkenness Garick can easily see as forced. "Time for another, sir?"

"Sure!" Garick said happily, offering his flagon to the barwench. "You know, you're a very pretty girl, yet you look so world, or rather, plane weary. How's about you and I go out on the town a bit when you're done here and we'll have some good hearty fun! You know, I'm an adventurer. Seen and been to many different planes, fought off some of the nastiest little things you'll ever see!" He was hoping to impress her with this and perhaps get some company that night, but a little voice in the back of his head, the part that was completely sober, told him she probably heard this all the time from patrons. Still, the voice was lost in the blanket of alcohol through which it was attempting to communicate with Garick and he pressed the issue. "I bet you'd love to get out of this little town. I can take you wherever your heart desires. Any plane that you'd like to visit, I'll take you! And you needn't worry about any little buggers bothering us. I'll take care of them, don't you worry!"

Zant asked for Magpie's assistance. While he was finding reading to be an every increasing pleasure he couldn't ignore the construct's affinity for study. Afterwards, regardless of whether help was obtained, he made his way back to where Hoshi was being held. They had much to discuss, though the thought of trying to persuade the woman to calm herself and play along with the procedure of the trial was not something he looked forward to.

Magpie gladly set aside its own extensive research into, well, the laws and regulations of imports and distributions of twelve-inch handled hammers between the periods of 9th Circle 12th Turning and 9th Circle 13th Turning, and aided Zant however it could with the same quiet efficiency that it had used before. It did not ask why Zant needed this information and, unless he told it, merely processed what it could learn and told him about it until the Genasi set out to do whatever he intended to do.

It did, however, offer as he was to depart, to "join you if you require any further aid. Remembering specific dates and quotations can, after all, be a mildly difficult challenge."

Automata - Underground

"Well, you sure look like a real cutter." She refills his mug with a smile. "But that life's too...exciting for me. I'm sure I'd just get in your way. Now, just let me know if there's anything else, sir. And pay at the bar once you're done." Heading back to the kitchen, she stops to chat with one of the other wenches at the far side of the room, glancing back towards Garick every so often as she chats with him. Of course, he might not be sober enough to notice the rolling of eyes or the light snickering as the two of them talk.

Zant leads Magpie back to the office of the Town Militia, filling it in along the way. From the story he tells, just hours after the end of the contest Hoshi was arrested for trafficking in illegal and dangerous substances - alchemical silver, specifically. Two crates of the compound were found in the back of her rented workshop. This was of course a massive enough quantity (enough for two or three platoons of soldiers easily) that the militia naturally assumed she must be an arms dealer, although Hoshi claimed she owned them only for their use in smithwork, iron being much easier to work with for large items than pure silver. She further claimed to Zant that someone must have reported her to the authorities as there was no other reason for them to investigate. She suspected it was Shade and his party, given the sentence for such an act: immediate deportation, in addition to a fine equal to twice the value of the confiscated goods. Thus, Zant agreed to serve as her barrister, hoping to argue the charge down to mere possession, the only sentence for such being the fine itself.

Just as Zant finishes bringing Magpie up to speed, the two reach the Militia headquarters within Government Square. Will they be able to resolve the situation?

Magpie was caught off-guard by the compliment and for a moment produced a series of incoherent syllables before correcting itself. "O-of course not, my memory is no more good than yours or any others, I too have a tendency to forget things that are irrelevant. I believe, however, that I might be more efficient at learning."

Garick heard and saw this, and though there was a part of him that was a bit bothered by this, he mostly didn't care. He wasn't surprised by the response, and so got up and paid his tab. He wasn't smashed yet, but quite tipsy, and so as he left the bar, he swayed a tiny bit and made his way to some more places of less than reputable business. He entered a brothel, intent on enjoying himself a bit more, but ensuring that he would still have enough frame of mind to keep himself safe. He walked about the Underground with a constant hand near his weapons.

Automata

While Garick enjoys himself on what may be perhaps the easiest job he's ever taken part in, Lorraine and Asp continue their research into her homeland, while Zant and Magpie argue in Hoshi's defense against the bureaucracy of Automata. Over the next two days, each manages to find a good measure of success towards each of their goals, and finally, they meet back in the Underground, outside the room of Filatiere to collect their reward for Öringr. While Hoshi still refuses to leave, she's at least shown she can (mostly) behave herself in town, and perhaps this will be enough for at least a partial reward.

Led by Mona once more to their arranged meeting place, for now they wait for his arrival, exchanging words of their last few days in the city. While Garick has perhaps the most entertaining stories, each has their own tales to recount as well.

Updated the chatlog index here for the recent events of the rest of the party. Also, sorry, Darkknight, that you haven't had that much to do, but it was pretty close to the tail end of the mission as it was. I'll try and work in more for you on the next one coming up, and if I can something in chat before that too, if there's any between-mission things you'd like to do either solo or with another character(s).

Meanwhile, somewhere the party is not

"Valyn, thank Thoth you're here. Sorry to pull you out of Sigil. The gear stopped, we're in the dark why."

"...Stopped? That's impossible, it's not due for decades."

"Due?"

"Where'd it stop?"

"Regulus, why?"

"Any word from our men over there?"

"No, the portal's been closed since. We sent some-"

"Tell me as soon as you hear from them. This could be bad."

Magpie had returned from the defense of Hoshi somewhat changed, it spoke to the others rather more than before, and whatever interest it had before shown quietly was now replaced with inquisitive questions and remarks. It might have something to do with how its entire right side of its face had been smashed in with what looked like a sledge-hammer, splinters dropping occasionally, its voice sounding more hollow than usual and the light in its socket flickering almost constantly.

The construct, however, didn't seem to mind much, and instead waited patiently outside Filatiere's room, sketching on something that it, uncharacteristically, did not want to show the others.

Zant returned alongside Magpie. He did not speak of what how the construct had been damaged, deferring all such questions to the warforged itself. Instead he focused on relaying the events of the trial to the others and once again asserting that he believed that the intent of the Council had been met with regards to Hoshi, if not their exact word.

Asp, naturally, was full of questions about what had befallen Magpie, and whether there was anything he could do to help. If regular healing was ineffective, he was pretty sure there were spells for repairing constructs (otherwise their owners would be left looking pretty silly when they fell apart right at the start of their third fight). And Magpie was sort of like a construct, aside from being an actual person with a mind of his own. So those spells might work. Just say the word, and he'd get right on it.

His own day, he related, had been quite interesting, consisting of research and divvying up rats. Though Zant and Magpie's actually sounded pretty interesting. He'd never actually been on trial himself, the Krynnish legal system having long since given up on kender in despair.

Like Asp, Lorraine wanted to know what had happened to Magpie. Unlike Asp, she would be somewhat aggressive with her questioning, unwilling to let the matter drop. She would also attempt to get Magpie to let her heal him, as she did already know a spell that would allow her to repair damage to constructs. She wouldn't pursue any line of questioning related to his drawing, largely because she didn't care. Magpie was damaged, and acting differenly. She didn't like what the hell was going on, and was beginning to regret suggesting this trip.

Magpie had, somewhat unwillingly, slowly relented under the forceful questioning of Lorraine, and had revealed sparse bits of information, suggesting to her that it would rather discuss the matter in private once this matter was settled, tucking away the drawing after folding it very, very neatly.

Lorraine was... not completely satisfied, but she agreed to give Magpie his space for now. If someone had hurt him, she intended to do something about that, and she asked that Magpie wouldn't wait too long to get back to her.

"Lorraine, it is not..." the construct seemed surprised at the woman's interest in its affairs, and nodded finally, relenting somewhat. "I have... arranged some things with the priestess Zant and I defended. It is... something I feel I need to do." the eyes of the construct dimmed somewhat, and the voice was speaking with much more emotion than usual, "Do you remember what we talked about before? It is... related to that subject. Perhaps... you can aid us with it?"

Should Lorraine continue to pursue the matter, the construct would admit to its plans, explaining things in a calm, orderly fashion.

Lorraine would love to help Magpie with most anything he could need help with. So she sat and listened as Magpie explained. She was... shocked, at first. Not as bad as last time, but a bit. After all, in the context of the previous situation, this actually made more sense.

"... Wow. I see. Well, I'm not thrilled to hear that you did this to yourself,"

She brushed the deformation in Magpie's face gingerly.

"But I'm glad you told me what's going on. Friends have to try to trust each other. I'd love to help Hoshi with this, I'd been wanting to meet her anyway. And I'll definitely help in any way I can, even if that's just further compensating Hoshi for her work."

Lorraine worked hard to restrain herself from suggesting body slots for magical oddities. This was going to be Magpie's body, and unless she asked about it specifically Lorraine didn't want to cramp her creativity; She'd seen Magpie shy away from such subjects too often when questioned about them in any way.

The construct was, surprisingly, rather warm to the touch, despite its metallic and wooden exterior, and its eyes grew a bit brighter at Lorraine's remark. "Do not worry yourself about it, Lorraine. It is not something unbearable. I have been in much worse conditions before." it speaks reassuringly, and in fact it doesn't seem much hampered by the damage, aside from its voice occasionally becoming slightly muted or twisted.

"I am very glad you would be willing to help us in this endeavor, and I am sure she would appreciate it as well. I have made some... notes on what would need to be done. Here, I can show you, as long as the others do not see." it handed over the folded note and seemed almost... embarrassed about it.

Garick strolled in, a rather content look on his face. He'd spent what was probably the best time he'd ever had on a mission and he secretly hoped all of his adventures with this group would be this easy. Then he stopped dead in his tracks as he saw the living construct's face. "Whoa... somebody did you a good number, huh? You alright?" Garick wasn't sure what the etiquette here was. On any normal human such a wound would be excruciating and need immediate attention. Instead, the Warforged seemed to just be sitting there contentedly, so Garick was a bit confused about how to react. He looked around to the others and tried to gather how he should act from them, and since none of them were that freaked out by Magpie's condition, he decided he wouldn't worry about it. Instead he took a seat, and looked around, listening to what the others were recounting about their time. When asked, Garick would just say that he kept himself "busy with the oddities of the Underground." If truly pressed for the details, then Garick would have no qualms about recounting in detail the less-than-modest things he'd done in the less-than-modest area of the town, stopping whenever he noticed that people didn't want to hear any more.

Automata - Underground

Finally, with tales regaled and concern exchanged, the door to Filatiere's office opens once more. The party flows inwards, finding...an unfamiliar face. A grey-skinned, dour-looking dwarf that those on the Acheron mission recognize as a Duergar, glowering at the five of them as they arrange themselves inside. A crimson bag lies on the table at his side, cinched shut and emblazoned with what looks like an inverted version of the symbol of the Council of Order. "Well, hurry up and take a seat. There's not all day.

"So, from what I understand, you were hired for a mission by 'Filatiere', eh?" He takes a swig from a pocket flask. "Well, it wasn't exactly sponsored by the Council of Anarchy. The whole mess wasn't, far back as bringing the priests here. Th' high-ups aren't happy with it, not in the least. And I've got to clean up this mess. You're getting your payment, so don't start a riot about that." He pulls on a thick glove. "Figured you'd want to know you were patsies for that trinket trying to get itself out of trouble before we tracked to it."

He chuckles as he reaches his hand into the bag, pulling out a silver necklace with a round, flat locket, emblazoned with a stylized "HL". "Last time we let one of Heiron's enchantments do anything for us. Say hello to your boss. I wouldn't put it on if I were you, it's a stubborn one. We're tracking down its creator to have words as we speak. 'Breach of contract' and all that." He drops it back into the bag. "You'll be taking that, of course. We're not keeping it around here. And as for your payment..." Hauling a thick, well-made mahogany case off the floor, he drops it onto the desk. "16000 gold worth of platinum bars. Consider it in our case a promise that you'll keep 'Filatiere' far away from us. We don't want it interfering with our work any time in the future, got it? Any questions? Complaints?"

Things are coming up near the end of this adventure, we're wrapping things up here shortly. If there's nothing more folks want to take care of themselves beforehand (besides wrapping up this scene, there'll be about an in-game hour after this you'll have free), I'll push on to the denouement.

Magpie observed the silver medallion as it was shown, glancing over to the others. It hadn't met their employer, having instead gone to fetch the passes for everyone else, so with an almost bemused tone it spoke to the others.

"We were in the employ of a crafted object? ...Interesting, perhaps it is like I?" it looked at the bag it was in, "Is it capable of speaking?"

"Well, that's no good," Asp said, disappointed, "How can we ask it why it was all manipulative and stuff if it can't talk?" His eyes widened, "Oh, of course - that's how it gets you. You start off just wanting to ask it a few innocent questions and then BAM! You're a minion of Evil. Or maybe Law. My grandfather was a minion of Evil once," he continued sagely, "But it didn't work out too well; there was a big misunderstanding with his Dread Masters and he almost got fed to a crocodile."

Zant listened to the dwarf's explanation with carefully concealed astonishment.

"I have no complaints but I do wish to ask a couple of questions. Who is this Heiron, what precisely is that amulet and what measures do you intend to take to "clean up this mess," as you put it?"

Automata - Filatiere's office

The duergar waves off Zant's questions. "Eh, he's a mage with a reputation for forging thinkers like that one. Spark of life, they call it. Magical creation with a mind of its own. He thought he could fill a few gaps in our ranks, collect on their salaries. We might not've minded if they were any good, but as it is..." He shrugs. "You saw how good Filatiere was at his job. And he was the best of the lot. Might as well call it cheating us out of honest wages, for all the good they did us. If it were me, I wouldn't worry about poking my nose into this. You canny?"

Magpie stared in wonder at the bag holding the amulet. "There are... more of this kind? He created..." the voice of the construct seems... awe-struck, or perhaps almost fearful. "You want us to find this Heiron?"

"No. As I said, we have men handling it. You can take this payment, and you can leave things alone. Go on back to wherever you came from." He scowls, though it's hard to tell the difference. "I'm starting to regret even telling you this much, but I figured you should know just who you were working for."

Lorraine took the bag with a pleasant smile on her face. For once she wasn't overly curious or inquisitive. Rather, she seemed swift and business like in her speech and actions.

"You've been most gracious, sir. I believe I speak for all of us when I saw that I hope we have a chance to work with your group again, though under the circumstances I understand if you don't reciprocate. Magpie, would you grab the box? It looks a bit heavy."

They were about finished here, and it would be good to get Magpie's modifications done and then return to the stairs. They'd need to find Thomason first, but honestly she would be surprised if he didn't conveniently find her first in the looking.

"Hmph. I like her. Why can't the rest of you have that attitude?"

Magpie nods and picks up the strongbox, having some trouble itself with the rather extreme weight. It shifts the weight around a bit, looking somewhat strained. "Because we are unique living beings, and therefore differ in attitudinal approach to certain subjects."

Garick was a bit confused about the mention of their employer being a talisman, but he had heard of odder things. Watching Magpie pick up the box and shifting it around, he figured he might offer his assistance. "That thing looks a little too heavy for you. Want me to hold it?"

The construct seemed surprised by the offer, but nodded. "I appreciate the aid, although I am uncertain whether it would be proper conduct to let you carry it alone. Shall we lift it together?"

If Garick would persist, the construct would relent and let him carry it, otherwise it was more than happy to share the burden.

Somewhere the party is not

"Valyn, we just heard from one of our runners. There's a huge build-up in Regulus, what's-"

"Labelas...clear Modron Way, now! I don't know why this is happening now, but you need to get everyone out, now! March protocol, immediately!"

"March...yes, sir!"

Outlands - Automata

Magpie and Garick work together to haul the strongbox up to the surface, with the rest of the party around the two, watchful for thieves and muggers. Heading out from Mona's establishment, they first make their way towards the inn. Crossing the wide thoroughfare, they notice an odd silence, and it doesn't take long to pinpoint it. For the first time since they've arrived, the portal to Mechanus, the massive gear platform...isn't moving. They seem hardly the first to notice, with a small crowd milling about, rumors flying about what's going on. Surrounding the gear, the largest mass is made up wholly of Automata petitioners, individuals in the identical brick-red robes with looks of dire concern, terrified at what this might portend.

Suddenly, the silence breaks, as a full platoon of Council militia burst from the main government hall and the militia headquarters, shouting to the gathered crowds. "Everyone, clear Modron Way now! This is an immediate command from the Council of Order, all people are to clear the Way immediately! We are enacting March protocol, repeat, March protocol!" The command raises a murmur amongst some of the petitioners and other locals - "March protocol?" "Now? It's not due for decades." "What's going on, that can't be right, can it?" - but most everyone else, including the party, has no clue what this refers to.

Anyone that heavily read the law books:
Spoiler:
Well, not no one. You remember a reference to it in your readings, emergency legislation enacted only upon the coming of the Modron March, a regular happening that occurs every 289 years, and last occurred approximately a century ago.

They begin rounding up stragglers, pulling stands out of the way, diverting wagons, doing whatever they can to get people clear of the road. And while it's a noble effort, and the majority are pushed to the edges and side streets, it's simply not enough time. The gear rumbles, and a massive force manifests upon it...a full squadron, in fact. Dozens of modrons appear on the platform, and begin a steady march forward. More and more modrons appear as the gear clears, of all castes: Spherical monodrones wielding gleaming spears. Cube-shaped pentadrones grasping dual crossbows, equal numbers winged and four-armed. A pair of stumpy-legged decatons, their ten eyes casting about - a form well-familiar to Lorraine. A cylindrical, tripedal nonaton watching out amongst the crowd. Even a small number of humanoid modrons, individuals amongst castes so high and reclusive that even citizens of Automata seem shocked to see them.

Hundreds manifest on the gear, marching in perfect lockstep towards the massive archway at Automata's entrance, marching in a perfect formation a dozen wide, filling Modron Way precisely and trampling anything - and anyone - not out of the path. Thousands, even...by the time the flow stops, there looks to be over 10,000 modrons, a massive flow heading out. A single gargantuan platoon of modrons almost a mile wide, a river of living constructs flowing towards the horizon. Petitioners, travelers, merchants, and newsmen all charge after and alongside, eager to uncover what's going on.

Because for some reason, 200 years early, the Modron March has begun once more.

Okay I lied, there's a bit more before wrap up.

Zant:
Spoiler:
Though you've never seen a modron before, you know people. And something about these beings looks...agitated to you. Concerned, anxious...you can't put your finger on what, exactly, but something's off about them.

Naturally, one of those charging alongside was Asp, marching not quite in lockstep but keeping up more or less with a randomly selected modron on the edge of the column. "So, where are you marching to, exactly?" he asked, initiating the usual stream of chatter, "It's all very militaristic looking. You're not going to war, are you? I didn't think there was anything much to attack in the Outlands. Well, there's the other gatetowns, I suppose, but they don't really seem like much of a target. Is there somebody else out there marching in the other direction?"

Magpie watched the march in complete silence, its green eyes flaring almost stark white as it saw the rows upon rows of modrons walk past. It seemed to actually tense up a bit, a very, very low sound emitting from its mouth-slot as it watched.

Then, finally, it gave a shudder. "This is disturbing. I do not wish to see this..."
