Emily frowned a bit. Truth be told, she hadn't expected that Thirteen would be joining them. By choice or not, she struck her as an outsider. She might help out with information, but taking direct action just didn't seem in character.

"I think we can manage," she said, "It's not like we'll be able to call on Thirteen when we're out in the real world, so we might as well get used to doing stuff for ourselves now."

"...S...should I try to find her again?" Alexis looked at the others a bit nervously, "I-I'm pretty sure she can't see me now... unless I goof up."

"I-I'm sure Thirteen has her reasons for why she can't help us..."

Of course Thirteen couldn't help fight. She was obviously a time traveler or a wizard or something, and they're never allowed to do things like that. It was all falling into place for Lauren.

"We're gonna have to corner her no matter what we try, right?" Lauren chewed on the knuckle of her index finger. "Thirteen, can you come along even if you can't help? Like, get close enough so we can reach you if we need to? You said you'd be able to find her patch, but that it might not exist yet..." Lauren paused for a moment. Thirteen didn't seem to have the same idea of time that they did. "Would you be able to find it anyway?"

Thirteen nods. "I can come along. At least unless-" She cuts herself short, eyes widening, and glances back over the lake. "I can come along, for now."

While busy trying to slowly get to his feet, Sam stares out at the lake after Thirteen, trying to pick out what it was she suddenly stared off at. "Unless what? What's wrong, Thirteen? Are you okay?"

"Ok then... Everyone's done patching, we should get moving. We can go with Max's plan, and we'll worry about other things if that doesn't work out... We need to do this soon enough that if Kidd doesn't start patching by herself, we still have Thirteen to go hunt the patch up for us."

Enzo slipped into their internal comm connection as he stood.

We should all start heading towards the forest, I think, and Alexis can go on ahead of us and start tracking Kidd. When she comes into range, I can show everyone just where she is, and we can start getting into place. Are we good to start?

Max has had about enough of Thirteen's ADD. He looks at her, while raising an index finger towards Enzo to put a temporary hold on the order to move out.

"Okay, but before we move out, I gotta know: What's your deal, Thirteen? I'm with Sam. You've been really distracted this whole time. You keep staring at the scenery and talking about mysterious vague events -- not that that's unusual -- and cutting yourself off mid-scentence." Max extends his hand and makes a sweeping motion towards all his brothers and sisters. "We're all Wunderkind, aren't we? You're one of us, and we're one of you. Family shouldn't keep secrets, Thirteen."

Thirteen turns to look at Max for a moment, then over everyone else, before softening. "You're right. I've been telling you how we are all the same- Family- And then I don't tell you everything." She sighs, looking skywards again. "I'm anticipating an event that, due to ill timing, we can't actually do anything about. Even I don't know what it actually is, just that it will happen in some way. And that our existance, our very own race in it's relative infancy, depends on it. I don't know what to expect, so it's very..Nerve wracking."

Alexis had been ready to dash off as Enzo had seemed to seal the deal for what was to go down. Her hair had, thankfully, not been undone from the pony-tail Janet had made for her... at the moment, she wasn't sure if she preferred it to keeping her hair only barely tied up at the very ends, but she wanted to keep her hair the way it was for a while now... it'd been a long time since anyone had done anything with her hair like that before.

She'd given a little nod to Enzo's acknowledgement, if anyone was going to track down Kid outside the scope of what Enzo could scan, it'd be her... hopefully she could give him directions to move in if his scanning area depended on where he was.

Then she stopped and blinked at Max, looking a little confused... but when Thirteen replied a relieved smile grew on her face, only to shrink into a worried frown as she took in what was being said.

"D-do you think it might have something to do with K-Kidritta?" she mumbled, looking towards the forest. The news of her being poisoned was disturbing to her, how could they have missed that in the transformation from girl to computer data?

Silvie shook her head and said, "Wait wait wait, that sort of stuff doesn't happen. That-that's like some time travel stuff, and that only happens in cartoons and books and stuff!"

...then again, until just recently cyborg fighters only happened in cartoons and books, but Silvie decided not to mention that. That's different, she sulked to herself.

"So..." Max tilts his head and furrows his brow. If it was something that was worrying Thirteen, it must be serious. "You're saying..."

"...I'm not sure what you're saying. I'm with Sylvie here. I'm pretty sure most of our human bodies aren't actually in proper working order anymore, and I already got a dirty look for asking about time travel like a dumbass."

Max crosses his arms. "Aren't we already 'like we are now?' Are we in danger of... reverting, or something? Is this something we're in danger of when we transfer to our android bodies out in the 'real' world? And if we can't do anything about it... ummm... like, what should we do? Do you have any idea when this 'event' might take place? Was that too many questions all at once?"

Oh yeah. She had said there were going to be others like them, didn't she?

"Ooooh, right, right. That makes sense." Max blinks a couple times, as the issue sinks in a bit further.

"So, future Wunderkind, rather than actually becoming Wunderkind, might simply live their lives like we were; feeling some vague, hard to explain, barely even noticeable connection to the digital world, and never really understanding it? Like, if this event, whatever it is, doesn't go smoothly, or something?"

Max ponders, and places one hand on his hip and the other on his chin. "Okay, I can see why that might worry you," he says, not actually looking at Thirteen, or anything else in particular. "But, I'd still like to know if there's anything we can do about it."

Max's unfocused eyes wander, until they land on the forest, and Max remembers that they had been doing something important just a moment ago. "This is important stuff, but, like..." He turns to face Thirteen. "Can it wait? If it's not, you know... an immediate concern, I think Kid is our top priority right now, since she could be getting worse. I mean, this is something we need to talk about, but, like, can we do it after we get Kid back?"

Thirteen shakes her head. "It's much worse than that, but..I can't explain it; I don't know exactly. But that's the thing, we have to let it happen. We can't stop it, or everything will get all messed up."

"But it's out of our hands either way, right?" Emily asked, "I mean, if we're not supposed to interfere and we can't interfere, then osn't that a good thing?" The discussion was getting a bit metaphysical, really. She considered, "Will we know what's happened after the fact?"

"That's can't in the sense of screwing everything up, not being unable to do so."

Thirteen looks to Darren, and continues. "I've told you, I can manipulate time and space the way you will be able to fire heavy weaponry. This grants me...Knowledge."

She shakes her head quickly. "If you go...Go now, go quickly, we might not be able to stop it...But we'll still be able to observe it. Go, get Kid. Bring her back one way or another. If she's not patched, I will have hers ready by then."

Nodding, Sam does his best to stand unsteadily. He doesn't understand a lot of what Thirteen's saying, but he can figure out enough to know that saving Kid as quickly as they can is even more important now. "Don't worry, we'll get her back fast! And then we can try and figure out what to do about the other thing! Even if we hafta let it happen, maybe we can make it not as bad without hurting us or something?"

Alexis didn't need to hear more, it was imperative that they found Kid as quickly as possible, and like that she was up on her feet, looking at the others. "I-I'll find her, don't worry..." she spoke in her near-whisper tone of voice and stepped over to Sam, giving him a very quick hug before she let go, turning to the forest. "L-look after Percival for me, please?" she said with a shy smile as she dashed off.

She kept the communication channel clear, tuning in to the others so she could still hear them inside her head as she ran. Her hair whipped behind her as she jumped, dashed, twisted and turned through the forest, not upsetting a leaf, finding the perfect place to put her foot down to cause as little sound as possible. Occasionally she'd grab a low-hanging branch, swing herself up with the momentum and fly nearly ten-fifteen feet before continuing her dash through the woods. It all seemed completely natural to her at this point, but she couldn't help but notice how much quicker her mind was processing her surroundings. She'd notice a dry twig several moments before she needed to adjust her steps, and she was constantly aware of her surrounding in a way that would have been impossible for a girl her age.

The wunderkind project shouldn't fail... it couldn't fail. How could she stand by and watch children destined for this toil along in empty lives that didn't seem to have any... any meaning. No, she'd get Kid, and they'd convince her to come back, to be patched, and then everything would be alright

Basecamp:

Thirteen frowns. "Chances of us being directly hurt by it are low. While I don't know what it is, there's very little that can truly hurt us within the Database, and our digital forms are highly resilliant anyway."

----

Forest:

Alexis darts, crisscrossing over the path as it twists and turns through the forest itself. Eventually, she reaches a small clearing, with what appears to be the remains of a building. She's pretty sure she can hear Kid talking to herself within...She's got the location, now she just needs backup.

Of course, looking at this building is making her brain 'itch', she can't help but come back to the additional, non-system data that was included in her patch.

Alexis had swung herself low from a branch when she came upon the abandoned-looking building, and without barely a thought she caught on to another branch, swung herself up in the air and somersaulted backwards to land on it with barely a creak coming from the wood... Her senses were telling her it wouldn't be this easy, especially since she was supposed to weight a lot more than she did in this world, but with the constant input of outside data her body was increasing the margins of weight-capacity. It was simple really, just like during boot camp.

She brushed a few errant strands of hair away from her face as she strained her ears to listen in on whatever Kid could be saying, keeping a relative distance as she sent burst-transmission messages, encoded and compressed into tiny blocks of data that wasn't readable without the wunderkind identification keys of those she selected, which were everyone in her team. To anyone else, these tiny bursts of transmissions didn't mean anything, and in a place like this, errant code was hardly unusual.

This is Alexis. I've found Kidritta. She's in some kind of building. Looks abandoned. Most likely alone. Over."

Awaiting a response, she looked at the house, memories of that extra piece of code hovering at the corner of her mind... why was this place out here anyway? She didn't recognize it... but why did it trouble her?

Enzo began moving as soon as Alexis had left. He'd wanted to get this done with the minute he heard that the poison was doing bad things to Kid's code, and that her condition could be degenerative. However, he didn't really have the confidence to put his foot down about things he wasn't already pretty sure he was going to complete agreement on anyway. However, he stopped breifly when the burst transmission came in from Alexis. A building? Here? Everything they'd seen so far suggested that you wouldn't find anything of the sort here. It just didn't fit with the observable data so far. How odd.

He'd kept track of Alexis' route through the forest as best he could while following, and shared the information with his team mates in the form of a local area map, with their locations marked and Alexis' path highlighted. He also performed a quick calculation based on their rate of movement over the ground and their destination, and put up an ETA; all of this was semi-transparent, to avoid interfering with the others' vision. All of this might be overkill, but he saw no reason not to do it. It felt right. He sent Alexis a burst transmission back, coded so only she should be able to understand it.

Look around from your current position, and see if you can find any spots suitable for us to hide in while we're staging our 'show' for Kid please?

Emily was likewise on the move, refraining from taking to the air for the time being. No sense leaving the others behind, after all. As she went, she reviewed her own mental script, working out just how she was going to play this.

Understood, I will try to find a potential cover. Over.

It didn't even occur to Alexis that she communicated entirely different over the com-channel than she usually did. Her training was beginning to kick in, and the jargon she'd been taught came to her as easily as the movement through the forest. Her eyes darted around as she near-on literally melded in with the nature around her, remaining as motionless as the thick woods around her. No, not motionless, she swayed, just as the leaves and branches did, in the slight, slight breeze that went through the forest.

She considered approaching the building, the last time Kid has acted out, it hadn't seemed like she'd noticed Alexis at all, but had just been seeing things... but she wouldn't get close just yet.

There's plenty of forestry around, but I can't guarantee she'll overhear us once you are all here... I saw a small clearing about twenty feet from the house, dense forestry surrounding. I'll try to transfer the location.

She glanced over to where the clearing was, and you could juuuuust make out a small patch of grass in it from her vantage point. She closed an eye and did that... mental... thing where she marks things out for the others. Realizing that Kid might notice it as well, she set it on a low-frequency blip of about once every minute. No sound, just a flick of color. No one who wasn't looking for it would find it.

Forest Clearing:

Alexis finds six pieces of cover scattered around: Two large grassy patches, two large boulders, and two small bushes. All are easily close enough for anyone inside of the ruins to hear if they spoke loudly.

Base Camp:

The rest of the children move into the forest, with the exception of Thirteen. Now, Janet is beginning to look around nervously. "..What do you think this..Event's gonna be? I mean...She's pretty nervous, so..."

"Who knows." Max answered, glancing at Janet. "If it's got her worried, it must be big, but we can't worry about that right now. One crisis at a time. We'll deal with that once we get Kid back."

Looks like everyone was on the move, especially Alexis. It was kind of scary to see how effective she was at her job, considering her demure nature. A little scary, but also inspiring! It was proof positive that Max and his new family were truly an extraordinary group. It gave him an extra dose of confidence, whether he needed it or not.

But that building... that was bothering him. While on the move, Max addresses a question to the group at large on the Kid-exclusive channel Alexis and Enzo have been using. Why is there a building out here? That doesn't make sense. Not with what we know about this place so far.

His gaze whipping about the woods, Sam can't help but find the entire place tremendously interesting. He's never been in a forest before, and everything's so neat everywhere! There's a real wireframe chipmunk, and a creek, and a bunny warren, and...

"...A building? Huh." Sam thinks over the new knowledge, " ...Hey, maybe that means there are people here that aren't us? Like...forest hobos or something?" He does his best to not trip, stumbling over a half-hidden root but just barely managing to stay on his feet.. "I wonder if we'll meet one! Maybe they could help with Kid?

Mission: 02- Subhuman.
Deck City: The Database: Unformatted space.
June 15, 3756.

The others, minus Thirteen, catch up to Alexis, seeing a large, burnt out building of some sort up ahead. It's odd in that it seems like someone tried to clear it, but couldn't get it all away, and the remains appear to be something like a decrepit church. Inside, they can see movement, and through Enzo sense the presence of their new sister. Around, the group can see the patches of cover- Two large patches of tall grass that'll hide two, tow large boulders to also hide two, and then two small bushes that'll cover a single person each.

"That's...That's kind of...I Don't like that." Janet says. "What's that doing here? I..I think we need to figure this out. I'm going to think...You guys do your stuff and we'll get this under control."

Janet hangs back, sticking to the path through the forest and allowing the others to proceed closer to the building. Now all that remains is for them to pick their cover of choice and get their plan started.

(Okay! Cover time. All I need is in a true post, or even just an OOC note determining where your character will go based on the following map. Assume that Kid can't detect you moving into your original position, but it may come into play later, so choose wisely. Spots are first come, first serve, and Alexis is auto-hidden and thus needs no cover.)

Alexis looked around as the others hid around the church, and then nodded to herself before looking up, springing from the ground where she'd been standing and grabbing onto a branch, swinging around it to land once more on her feet, hunched and eyes kept locked on the church-like building.

If she runs again, I'll be ready to follow. she communicated through the channel, We're pretending to be bad guys, right?

As they ran along, Lauren was thinking about her lessons, and wasn't liking where it was leading her. All the things her dad had shown her to keep her safe, and everything she'd learned to keep other people safe revolved around tricks: little things that made people realize they should stop doing what they were doing. A stomp on the instep, a quick hit below the ribs...all tricks that worked really well on humans, but...

That wasn't the only problem. She felt so much more powerful since her patch, but she grudgingly had to admit that, judging from everyone's reactions and what Kid had done earlier, Kid was probably quite a bit better than her. It bothered her a little bit.

Lauren frowned to herself. In the end, it was probably going to be like most of the other times. Win fast, or you won't win at all. And this time...Lauren slowly smiled as she realized the big difference. This time, she wasn't alone. She slipped into the grassy patch around the back side of the building, where she hopefully wouldn't be seen. It would give her enough distance to build up some speed. She'd have to rely on the others to let her know when to move.

Meanwhile, just below the conscious level, a single processing thread that had been running since the patch navigated a series of options: species, gender, size, personality, terms of use, agreements, before arriving at a final "Confirm selection?" There it paused. Lauren could tell that something would happen as soon as she was ready, but now pretty clearly wasn't the time...

Max follows his sister behind the large rock closer to the entrance, before replying to Alexis. Yeah, we're supposed to be bad guys, but I think we should let Emily lead. Improv is great and all, but it helps if at least one person knows what they're doing.
