"Our sister will need a few minutes before she does anything." Thirteen says, indicating Lauren.

Lauren suddenly got a very distant expression on her face. "Yeah, hold on guys, I..." Anyone looking at Lauren would have the very strange impression that she somehow doubled in size while still taking up the same amount of space. "I'm going to--" She shivered as her body tingled all over and then disintegrated into a sparkling mist that billowed out from where she was sitting, expanding rapidly. The sparkles begin to fade as the mist coalesces into a hazy, indistinct humanoid figure that still manages to look an awful lot like Lauren might if she were eight feet tall. And made of cloud.

The cloudy figure slowly stands. "Oh," it says in Lauren's voice, which somewhat disappointingly fails to be particularly booming. "Wow. Uhhh...I'm patching up to version 1.1, and I guess this is what happens while I'm waiting? It says it'll be a couple minutes...sorry!"

Alexis just gaped. What was going on? She stared at Lauren's sudden transformation, then to Thirteen, to Enzo, to Lauren again. Then she nodded, and her usual worried look seem to meld away as she looked about as serious as when she had first chased after Kid.

"What should we do, Enzo?" she asked her brother, looking over to him, "I can move pretty quickly through the forest, it's been part of my training..." she thought for a while and nodded, "maybe you can make it so she doesn't see me? If you're able to mark us out as wunderkind, I'm sure you'd be able to decide who gets to see what."

Enzo sat conflicted for a moment. He'd been relying on the idea of Lauren being available so far. He couldn't do that now... Which was unfortunate, but at least when she finished patching she could catch up to them all easily.

"Alright. Alexis, go on ahead. I'll guide you to Kid so long as I can see her. I really think it would be a bad idea to engage her until we have a solid plan in place, so try not to. The rest of us will follow after you while we work on that plan, and Lauren's XLR8 system will let her catch up to us when she's finished patching. I'll keep us all in contact with Thirteen as best I can while we're on the move."

He linked up all of his present brothers and sisters as he talked, while preventing Kid from seeing their movements or hearing their communications. If she had a way to know he was tracking her, then she did. He needed to keep that for this part of their mission to have anything remotely like relevance. When the connections were complete, he'd stand and get moving, displaying an overlaid map of Ki'd current location and the route she'd taken to get there to the others.

"Let's get going, and let's hear those suggestions."

He continued to search for any weaknesses or flaws he could take advantage of in Kid's digital design.

"We can move while patching." Thirteen says. "It's just awkward, and we can't use our unique abilities. Lauren can still accompany you."

She creates another rift, and pulls out a small box, handing it to Enzo. It looks like a PDA, but it's got a W emblazened on it. As soon as she hands it off, her attention snaps back to the skies, as if she heard something there.

Max stared at Lauren, surprised enough to forget to raise an eyebrow. "Umm... wow. That's..." He scratches his head, unsure of how to comment on the situation.

Then Enzo starts rallying the troops. Max starts moving, although he's not entirely confident in their plan thus far. "So... I realize Kid is getting further away from us, but what good is catching up to her if we don't know what to do when we get there? What, are we just going to update her firmware, and hope for the best?" Max turns around to look at Thirteen, walking backwards. "Look, upgrades are great and all, but is there, like, some patch notes or something we could skim through on the way that might tell us what version 1.1 actually does, and how it might help us in this situation?"

Thirteen looks up at the sky, again, and Max gets irritated. "And why the heck do you keep staring at the freakin' sky? Don't we have something a little more important to focus on?"

"Yes." Thirteen says, narrowing her eyes. "Yes, we do." She sighs, and turns again. "The patch effects us all differently. There are some commonalities. It cleans our programming up to reduce redundancies, and through that, enables file compression and expansion. Other than that....It effects us differently."

Alexis nodded, and quicker than they'd ever seen her move before she was up, dashing away towards the forestry, disappearing into it with the faintest of rustles. She continued to listen to the others as she moved between trees, alternatively on the ground, in the branches or even above, anything that gave her the quickest way to move.

She'd done this so many times in training, she didn't even have to think about it. Find a target, don't get noticed, report back. A part of her was still worried about Sam, about Kid, about the whole thing. She didn't like how calm Thirteen had been, but her training had also taught her to keep those emotions securely tucked away for when she needed to react quickly. Her eyes were peeled as she took in her surrounding, mind constantly updating with Enzo's predictions of where Kid was headed...

"I ain't gonna be able to help find her," Darren stated. "No special powers that make me move fast, and I'm not nice enough to talk her down. Plus I saw what she did to Sam, and I'm smaller than him. When they get us in our bodies, I'll be the guy with the lightning gun, and when somebody runs away from us, I can make sure they stop runnin', but right now that ain't an option. I can stay here and make sure a digital bear doesn't eat Sam. That's something, right? I can stab it with a tent stake."

Alexis:

Alexis ducks, bobs, and weaves between the trees like second nature. Using Enzo's link, she actually catches up to Kid pretty quickly, who seems to be stopping for the moment. Out here, the sun can't penetrate the canopy of trees very well, and there's lots of cover. On the other hand, Kid is staying on the road that cuts through the forest, though not the one that the children took to Thirteen the first time. If she begins to run again, they might lose her in the forest until they can put a larger search together than just Alexis.

Max wasn't comfortable having Thirteen squint at him, but he also wasn't sure, given her description of the patch, that it'll be helpful enough to their current task to warrant shutting Laruen's abilities down for a few minutes.

"Well... that sounds... sensible. And a little vague." Max turns back around to walk forward. "I'm not sure how helpful that's going to be in this situation, but who knows?"

Then Darren pipes in. At first it sounded like he was just taking another opportunity to point out how he wasn't able to shoot any thing yet, but he does make some good points, and they really should have someone stick behind with Sam. At least until his legs decide to work again. Max simply gives Darren a quick nod of understanding.

Max jogged up a little to walk next to Enzo. "Hey, Enzo, once we catch up to her, can you do some kind of scan or something to figure out exactly where/what the problem is? Also, if you want to travel a little faster, I'm sure Emmy and I could carry you." Max punctuates the offer by moving his hand up at an angle, to illustrate that he's talking about air travel. "But if you'd rather let our stealthy scout maintain a good lead on the rest of us, that's cool."

Alexis came to a stop quickly and silently, sitting hunched on a tree-branch as she watched Kid silently. For a little while she didn't even more, breathing wasn't even necessary in here anyway... Then she closed her eyes for a second, feeling if communication between her and Enzo was secured.

Enzo she tried, opening her eyes to look at the stray girl, frowning deeply as she had to remind herself Kid could most likely deal with her even easier than she did with Sam.

Enzo, I've found Kid... she's standing still, not moving, but if she starts to again we might lose her. Try to catch up and keep contact, I'll alert you if she moves again.

Back at the campsite, Sam sits against a tree, staring off into the woods, worried for Kid and Alexis. He looks over to Thirteen, frowning. "If we can't get Kid, what's gonna happen to her? Is she just gonna keep thinking she's hallucinating, or is she gonna get sicker?"

Thirteen seems lost in thought for a minute, before responding.

"We need to patch her. The longer that takes, the more likely it is that she will..."

Thirteen stops to think again for a second, before continuing. "She will become very sick. The toxin is part of her programming, and her patch will fix it."

"So how do we get her to stand still long enough to apply the patch?" Emily asked, "The moment she sees any of us she'll bolt again." Some kind of nebulous connection between Kid and Lauren was all very well, but could they rely on it? And where did the rest of them fit into the plan?

"But if she thinks we're fake, how're we gonna talk her out of anything?" Feeling fidgety, Sam picks up a handful of rocks, tossing them into the center of the group one at a time. "If I saw someone that wasn't real, I probably wouldn't listen to them. Oh, what if we just...kinda...threw her patch on her or something? What's hers like? Like Lauren's was hair things, so what's hers?"

She didn't know how Enzo had done it, but Alexis had been 'listening in' on the conversation back at the camp and, still keeping her eyes on Kid, decided to add some input on her own.

Where do these... um... patches come from anyway? Are they just... floating around?

She blinked a few times, taking in her surrounding as she shifted a bit... well, surveillance was, well... pretty boring, but she'd thankfully gotten used to it a bit.

Could my patch be out there somewhere? then, in hindsight, she added quickly, are your legs getting any better Sam...? M-maybe it's better if you take Percival...

"I collect them." Thirteen says. "Or..I can retrieve them, if necessary. However...When it's your time, you will patch on your own. But sometimes, your time must be before your time."

As her reply comes through the link, Kid's attention snaps towards Alexis' former position of observation. Her eyes narrow, and Alexis notices that her sisters eyes have become...Dulled, and clouded.

There's a momentary pause as Kid falls into a martial arts stance. "The elves are a people of the forest in all of the literature. They are one with it, and now I'm one with it. IF you think I can't tell you're there...You are sadly mistaken."

Kid rears back onto her back foot for a moment, before springing forward, slamming her fist into a path-side tree. There's a loud CRACK, one that even those who have yet to enter the forest have no trouble hearing it at all. Within the forest, Alexis is showered with splinters, as the tree noisily cracks and falls over the path itself. Kid glares into the forest, though she never focuses directly on Alexis, before she hurries along the path. All Alexis can tell is that she continued going straight until the path curved out of sight, rather than taking the turn.

Alexis:
Spoiler:
You know you didn't make a noise when moving. And you were way out of sight. There's no way she could have actually noticed you!

((So, light green is field, and patchy green is... like the field, but more exciting?))

"So, we need to patch Kid to save her, but we don't have her patch, because it probably doesn't exist, because she's new? So, what the heck are we supposed to do then?" Max mulls over the currently available information.

"Umm... since Kid is the same archetype as Lauren, is their programming similar enough that she could use Lauren's patch? I mean... I don't really know how it works, but if Lauren's already downloaded the patch files, could they be transmitted to Kid somehow? Or, if each patch has to be specific for each of us..." Max tilts his head, his mind exploring several different possibilites.

He turns around to face Thirteen again... clearly, he has no problem moving backwards. "Hey, you said the patches had 'certain commonalities.' Could we maybe... isolate the part of Lauren's patch that would be the same for all of us and transmit that to Kid?"

As Thirteen is about to answer, there is a loud cracking sound coming from somwhere in the forest. Max snaps back to look in the general direction of the sound. "What the heck was that?" Alexis, what was that? Are you ok?

"Whatever it was, it can't be good," Emily said, anxiously waiting on Alexis' response. Just how they were going to get Kid to stand still without anyone getting hurt was a bit of a mystery to her. They were going to have to come up with a plan.

I-I'm alright Alexis sent back to her friends, anxiously watching the departing Kid.

S-she's moving again. She didn't see me, but... I think she saw s-something -something that wasn't real. She's talking about e-elves and, umm... I think we need to hurry, she's getting out of range soon.

With that she was once more moving after Kid, making sure to remain outside her field of view, and shift around from trees, just in case she had some way of noticing her occasionally.

Alexis tries to follow Kid, and gets maybe ten feet...Before Kid is completely out of sight again. Alexis notices the glowing aura of the XLR8 system again, and Alexis is completely alone in the forest.

On the bright side, she's got the link with Enzo still, so she can find her way back to the others.

The young girl stopped and bit her lower lip as she realized Kid was out of her range now... She wanted to swear, but nothing came to mind, and in frustration she slapped her hand against the trunk of the tree she was sitting on, eyes narrowing.

She's gone... I don't know where she went, she turned on her XLR8-system and disappeared. I'm coming back. Thirteen, and I want to get patched. I don't think I can find her again if I don't.

It seemed much of Alexis stutter and cautious way of talking disappeared when she communicated by radio-link... or maybe she was just angry...

Sam stares off towards the woods, frowning as he holds tightly to Alexis's bear. Listening to Alexis and Thirteen talk between each other, he waits for one of the older kids to come up with a plan, ready to head out on anything they might suggest.

Thirteen mumbles a reply, just barely loud enough for the others to hear. "I...Could, I guess."

A moment later, Alexis emerges from the forest, quickly approaching the group. Thirteen turns her attention towards the returner, as if waiting for an answer to her previous question. Meanwhile, the cloud that is Lauren slowly begins to shrink back to normal, as her patch completes itself. After a moment, Lauren is good as new, one solid piece.

Lauren:
Spoiler:
Patch complete: You are the first 1.1 Wunderkind. And you feel like you're Wunderkind: You feel stronger than before, faster, and even your senses seem sharper. Your patch notes said something about an "Animal companion"...Along with your file compression and expansion being enabled.

Alexis rushed out of the forest and drew a deep breath, sighing.

"I-I'm sorry guys, I wanted to c-catch up to her, but..." she shook her head a little, biting her lower lip as she turned to look at Thirteen, hands on her hip. "I-I want to patch anyway, b-before we go further west and try to find her..." she threw a glance at Lauren, who seemed to just be recovering from her own. "...O-or is that a bad idea?"
