"Not really," she said. "I mean...yeah, the ears are kinda different, but lots of people got pale skin. And the hair? Man, you know how many people dye their hair that? If you're a freak, so's everyone at the mall. And hey! At least you don't have any metal in your face, right?"

"See? It's not so bad."

She beamed at Kid, and said, "I'm Silvie, by the way. I'll be heavy combat - that means I'm the person who goes in and punches things."

Alexis smiles too, a bit nervous and twisting a lock of her hair. She was glad Silvie'd stepped up, because she was running out of idea of how to cheer Kid up.

"Umm..." she mumbles to the new girl, "Are you alright now?"

Mission: 02- Subhuman.
Deck City: The Database: Classroom.
June 15, 3756.
12:30

"Um...Yeah." Kid nods. "I think so."

The 'intercom' crackles back to life, and Rivendare begins to speak again. "All settled in, I hope? Next mission, comin' atcha." There's a ruffling of papers, again, as he collects his data. "Ooh, you guys will either love, or hate this. Heh. Well then!"

He pauses for a minute, though nobody can really even guess why. "Your next mission, guys, is to go spend two days camped out in the Unformatted area. Your mission, specifically, will be to scout the..Uh, area, and collect any knowledge you think we need to know about it. Also, we'll be out of comms for those two days, so it's practice for when you guys are on a real mission and can't contact us when you're stuck in the wilderness somewhere. We'll be monitoring you the entire time and we'll be ready to recall you if something happens...Though I don't think anything CAN happen.

"To further add to this whole thing, you won't be able to ask questions. Make sure to requisition everything you'll need from the supply closet before heading out. And just so you know, we're not hiding anything this time. You're not looking for anything specific, and this isn't a trick mission like before. You have everything you need; just...go camping! And with that, kiddos..."

The intercom crackles as Rivendare puts on his "I'm your boss" voice again. "Mission Zero-Zero-Two, scouting of the Unformatted Space within the Database. I repeat, scouting mission! Weapons locked! Wunderkind team- Class dismissed! Deploy!"

The intercom cuts out, and Janet blinks. "You think he's gonna do that...Every time? And, what...I guess we're just going on a camping trip?"

Smiling, Sam's pleased to see that Kid's starting to feel better about things here, and about how she looks. And Alexis isn't upset anymore either, which is even better. He's about to say something to the other kids here, when Rivendare speaks up, announcing the next mission. The idea of a camping trip drives all other thoughts out of his mind, as he turns the idea around in his head. "I've never gone on a camping trip before. This sounds neat! And we're gonna be alone the whole time too, just us? Cool! Um...but what kinda stuff do we need to bring? Have any of you gone camping before?"

Alexis flashed Kid another shy smile and then stood up to listen to Mr Rivendare again... her face becomes a little worried about his warning, a mission that they're either going to love or hate'll b...

camping? She blinks and looks around at the others, pretty sure none of them had expected this... and he was calling it a mission too! She huffed her cheeks a bit, making her all nervous like that...

She listened in shocked amazement as he continued to talk, and when Janet finally expressed what they were probably all thinking she chewed her lip... "Maybe we're supposed to... say something to him when he does?"

Drawing another hand through her hair she listens to Sam talking and shifting looks of horror and expectation traverse her face... "I...I've never been either..." she whispers... "Do you think we... we'll find any tents in the..." she blinked. Supply closet? What was that about? Her computerized mind, ever helpful, pointed out its existance, location and proximity to herself, but she was still a bit puzzled. "...supply closet? I'm p...pretty sure we need tents..."

There's a supply closet? Max was unaware of it until just now, and yet he apparently already knew where it was. He wondered if he'd ever get used to that.

Camping, huh? It's been a long time since Max went on a camping trip, and he wasn't exactly crazy about it last time. But for some reason, the prospect of having an officially sanctioned opportunity to explore the unformatted area was exciting. Maybe bcause it was new, or maybe it was because it was so different than the rest of The Database.

It was probably both.

"I've been camping a couple times, but it was never my favorite thing to do. But for some reason, I'm kind of looking forward to this anyway. I'm sure they've got tents and junk in that supply closet, but there's something that is absolutely important that they might not have. We need to make sure we've got marshmallows, graham crackers, chocolate, and a way to start a campfire, so we can make campfire s'mores."

Max tilts his head to the side in thought. "...Actually, I'm not sure if fire is going to work like it should out there. I guess that can be one of the things we test."

"...Is it just me, or is it weird that our commander basically ordered us to go on a camping trip?"

The more people talked about the camping trip, the more Alexis wanted to go on it. It seemed it'd be really fun, after all, and maybe they'd all get to know each other a bit more... and she hadn't really done much exploration of that place anyway, and now she was supposed to. There was one thing she didn't get though...

"W-what're s'mores?"

"Oh, it's kind of like a marshmallow and chocolate sandwich, with crackers instead of bread. You'll love them," Emily said, "We should probably sit down and make a list of what we need, though, so we don't forget anything important." She was quite enthusiastic at the prospect of camping, but as a city girl, the wilds were a place to visit, and you wanted to be fully prepared.

"Here, give me a sec."

Silvie squinted, and after a few seconds, a .doc file was opened ...in her head. She opened her eyes, and while she could still see the other children, the image of a white screen and a blinking cursor hovered in the back of her head.

"Okay, so we need tents. One big one for the girls, one big one for the boys - oh! And sleeping bags. And graham crackers and marshmallows and chocolate for the s'mores - and weenies, we have to have weenies."

As she spoke the words words showed up on her internalized screen, one letter at a time, with each item on a separate line. The cursor blinked again, and she asked, "What else?"

"Camping?" Darren demanded. "What's our next mission gonna be, flyin' a kite? First we gotta look for a freakin' cat and..." he stopped himself from mentioning the bizarre experience with Thirteen, "...and now we're going to roast marshmallows? When do we actually get to shoot stuff? Man, what is this crap?"

Max turns in his desk to face Darren. "Man, why do you want to shoot stuff so bad? Yeah, it's a little strange that D-52 is sending its shiny new android army out on missions to frolick in the forest, but, I mean... even in our solo training, it started out pretty simple before it got hard. Maybe not this simple, but I guess we can expect the same kind of thing from group training?" Max looks around, as if to visually gauge everyone else's opinion on the matter.

"Besides, they're always talking about how we're supposed to be, like... a family unit. I guess we can call this a 'getting to know each other' kind of mission."

At any rate, Max decides to share the benefits of his extremely limited camping experience. "Other than a place to sleep and a roof over our heads, and s'mores, and weenies, the only other really important stuff I can think of are flashlights, and enough food for all of us for 2 days, since I'm not sure we can rely on digital nature like we could rely on natural nature. Oh, and a way to cook... either something to start a fire, or some sort of camping stove. Also, some pots to cook stuff in, and maybe boil water. Not sure if we'll need to do that..."

Max tilts his head as he thinks of other possible needs/issues.

Ignoring Darren as usual, Sam thinks over Max's list. "What about stuff to sleep in? I dunno if it gets cold in that place when it's night, but it might. Hey, I wonder what the stars look like there. D'you think they look the same as outside? Oh, an' you needa show us all how you take pictures too, 'cause we should take a bunch of pictures too! Um...oh, what if it rains again? We should get stuff like towels an' stuff like that too.

"This is gonna be great!" He grins, almost bouncing in his seat. "Hey, maybe we should go see the closet so we know what kinda stuff is there to bring anyway. It'd be bad if we thought of stuff it didn't have."

Enzo had been quiet so far, thinking about the 'mission'. He'd never really been camping, due to the nature of his upbringing, so the idea of the trip was exciting! But, something else was on his mind right now.

"I wonder what happens if one of use tries to go for a swim, in the ocean or a lake out there or something...?"

"Okay, sleeping bags, flashlights...."

Silvie ignored Mr. Anger Management issues and jotted everything down, and as soon as she was done, she saved it before she could forget. "Okay, got it. And I think swimming will be like normal swimming? I mean, this is like...like a super VR, right? I don't see why it would be a problem - but oh! We should get some swim suits, huh?"

Max realizes soemthing.

"Wait a minute. Food? Why the heck did I suggest we bring food? We don't actually need it. We just went over this like two seconds ago. We're only bringing weenies and stuff for s'mores because they're fun to cook over a fire."

Max shifts back to a more relaxed position in his desk. "Anyway, rope would be good for climbing, or for keeping our food away from pesky critters, if that was a concern. Also good for tug-of-war. Compass might be a good idea, if it actually works. Good thing to test, though. I'd suggest a GPS, but I doubt the 'great outdoors' is big enough to have a satellite, and even if it was, there probably aren't any maps for us to position ourselves on anyway. We are on a scouting mission after all."

"I'm not sure what to suggest to avoid getting lost. If we don't have maps, compasses, GPSes, or even stars to navigate by, and Enzo's comm link seems to get locked along with weapons for some reason."

"I used to swim, a little, with mom..." Alexis piped up at the discussion, looking at the others and blushing a bit, "I'd like to try that, and eat s'mores, and roast wieners, and..." she blinked, realizing she was almost bouncing on her heels. "This camping-trip really sounds like it'll be fun!" she exclaimed, turning to Kid with a smile, hoping the new girl would respond in fashion.

Truth be told, she was a bit worried about things straying into a discussion again, what with people arguing what to bring and eat. "I-I could try to bring some hot chocolate..." she stammered, hoping that she'd be able to help out, if only a little.

Swimming, working just like normal.... That was actually his concern, but he wasn't sure that he could get that across sufficiently, without being able to tell them exact weights. Still, he wasn't goin to hold off and just see if one of them sank like a stone without objection or comment.

"Uhm, that's not what I meant. Well, kinda- So, listen. When we get our bodies, they're going to weight a lot. I mean, a lot a lot. Like more than 350 pounds at the lightest. What if that's reflected here? We'd hit the water and just sink all the way down.... however far that is."

We don't know nothin' about bein' out there besides what we figured out after like two hours. Anything could happen out there, and it's probably gonna. We need to stop frickin' talking about whether we can swim an' crap and talk about what's gonna happen when we're all being attacked by computer bears and then the world turns over and chucks us at the sky or whatever!"

Enzo wanted to tell Darren that he was wrong, and all the reasons why... but he couldn't quite summon it up in himself to do so. He just sighed instead; Things would probably be ok. They basically had no needs now, and damaging their programming would be a hell of a job for anyone making the attempt. He resolved to stop worrying, and try to be excited as most of the others were. He managed to force a smile as he said:

"I'll go with you to pick stuff up, Alexis."

Alexis frowned a little at Darren's outburst. Computer bears? She... she really didn't want to get attacked by those... But then the others seemed to... solve that whole bear thing, so her smile returned, a bit nervously, and hse nodded at the others. "A-alright..." she mumbled, her ears a bit red as Enzo spoke as if she was going to lead the group to the supply room or something... she took a reluctant step towards the exit ,and then another, hoping the others would catch on and kind of... walk past her, or something. So she didn't have to be in the front.

Computer bears, huh? Why did that seem more amusing than threatening? Bears certainly aren't to be taken lightly.

Max moves leisurely towards the door.

"Darren does have a point, kinda. There's only so much we can figure out by talking about it. We just need to go out there and experience it. We honestly still know very little about how exactly things work in The Database. I'm... pretty sure we don't have to worry about the whole world turning upside-down, but who knows? Hey, at least, if it does, Emmy and I will be alright!"

Max chuckles.

"But seriously, a couple of us have been out to the great outdoors after class since our last mission, and we didn't see anything that looked like a 'computer bear.'"

As he nears the door, Max gives Kid a pat on the back and a smile that is intended to be reassuring.

"You know, we really ought to come up with a better name. 'Unformatted area' is boring, and 'great outdoors'... it's just not personal. It's not 'us.' Plus, it's too long." Max tilts his head in thought and continues walking, but stops just behind Alexis and turns around. "Is 'Eden' too... a bit too much?"
