Magpie is totally metal.

Postby Kelne » Wed Mar 18, 2009 5:31 am

Having assured himself that Shawn is going to be alright, Asp turns his attention to the person she crashed into.

"Wow, that's a lot of armour," he says brightly, "People must bounce off you all the time. Isn't it heavy, though?" A more detailed examination follows, with Asp openly circling around Magpie and peering at the glowing green eyes, "say, does anyone else think there's nobody actually in the armour?" he asks, having noted a few discrepancies.

Crazy diseases and haunted armour? It's shaping up to be a really great day.

Zant watched the small man circle around the construct before deciding to let it handle its own introduction. Instead he turned to Florence.

"Continue to apply cold water to the injury or, should you have sufficient resources, affix crushed ice to the spot."

His eyes then drifted to the other small furry creature in the tent. "Is that creature associated with Shawn or her condition?"

You better believe it!

Postby Christian » Wed Mar 18, 2009 10:48 am

As Asp inspects the warforged, he sees, much as those before him, that what could initially be considered battle damage is in fact carefully carved patterns and words, resembling something like a large, magical circle, crossing between the areas of mithril and those of dark wood, faintly visible in the gleaming metal that makes up its body.

When Asp had finally finished speaking, Magpie looked at him with those green eyes and spoke slowly, quite in contrast to its inspector.

"It is an occurence I am not too familiar with," the same choppy way of speaking was back, "most are able to perceive me before they 'bounce off' me."

It paused for a while before it continued, "I am not sure I understood your question. I do not think there is anyone inside of me. They would not fit."

"I am Magpie." it added as an afterthought, fairly certain it had never introduced itself to Asp before.

"I don't think so for the moment, though thanks for your help." Trivale said to Feldrem. It certainly gives me something better to think about for now, at least... If nothing else, this trip will be interesting. He turned back to Lorraine. "So, how many others have you asked along so far? And how many more were you intending on?"

Theller scratched the back of his feathered head. "We...lost Alvar. The human knight we had with us. He was taken by a powerful demon that we had met on the way and let travel with us as a guide. I had even gotten his promise that he would not turn on us when we had reached our goal, but a demon's promise is meaningless. Since then I've been...keeping busy, trying not to think about it. I've not seen much of Zant or Trivale, so I don't know whether they have come to terms with it yet."

"Asperel Brighteyes," Asp says, extending a hand to shake, "Oh, and that's Nora," he says, seeing Zant giving her a suspicious look, "She's with me."

Magpie looked down at the offered hand for a little while before taking it in its own, the proportionally large hand almost enveloping that of Asp, although its grip was as soft as the brush of a feather.

"It is a... pleasure to meet you... Asperel."

Oh good, that was another for their intrepid band. A couple mroe and they'd even look legitimate!

"So far, I've only asked a big metal fellow by the name of Magpie, and he's agreed to come along. I was hoping to invite at least two others before we headed off; It's easier to be credible as a mercenary bodyguard if you have a bunch of people, I think."

"Alvar?" Rosalyn repeated, eyes widening further still, that bit of information hitting her rather hard.

Her gaze dropped a bit at the explanation of how the knight was lost. Not only had her fears been confirmed, but she had, after all, gotten acquainted with him just before the two groups had set out on their journeys, having been the one he had brought his bow to for repairs.

"That's..." she started, but didn't really know what to say. "... Gods... I'm sorry."

After that, she thought she would let the topic drop, considering that Theller had been trying not to think about it. She just remained silent then, a bit awkwardly, waiting to let the raptoran decide where to direct the conversation from there.

"Very well, I will call you Asp." Magpie spoke in the metallic, constructed voice once more before it turned to look down upon Shawn, kneeling behind her in a fluid motion that seemed impossible considering the stiff look of its body. "I am deeply sorry for damaging you, miss." its soft eyes glimmered faintly as it spoke, now in the more fluid and natural tone, "As... Asp remarked, I am quite solid, something I should have taken into account when I positioned myself there. I must, however, correct him in that I am not male." it spoke in an almost reassuring way.

"Should I take you back to your bed?"

Theller nodded with a defeated sigh. "It was a tragedy, but these things do happen. He knew the risks were great before we set out. We all chose this path, and something like this could happen to any of us at any time."

He took a deep breath and sought a different topic. "How fared you in Limbo? I've heard bits and pieces, enough to know that it was a success, but little more."
"Tell you what, Leto, I won't fight with you. Zeus' wives are pretty tough customers. You have my permission to boast openly that you have beaten the daylights out of me."

Planewalker's Guild

Still holding the gauze to Shawn's forehead, Florence sighs with relief. "If she needs rest, then all right. But as soon as possible, Shawn, we're going to find someone to help you. I don't know how this happened, but we're going to get you better, back to your old self. Don't worry, you'll be back to normal as soon as possible. Everything will be fine, I promise."

Florence looks up to the gathered group. "Have any of you heard of anywhere that might help? Somewhere with a lot of healers, or priests, or something like that? Whatever transformed her like this, I'm sure there's something out there that can undo it."

Taking Florence's reply as a yes, Magpie bent down further to lift the tiger-girl in its hands with ease, standing up and holding the still-groggy Shawn.

"There is a woman named Lorraine. she is looking for others to help her in the plane of Law; there are apparantly chaos priests who need to escape from it. Perhaps that would be a good place to look."

"It'd be symmetrical, that's for sure," Asp says, "Straight from the plane of Chaos to the plane of law." He looks momentarily thoughtful, "Say, you don't think this has anything to do with our trip to Limbo, do you? I wonder if I'll turn into an owl or something."

Shawn squirms, getting to her feet and leaping gracefully out of Magpie's arms, landing fluidly on all fours and returning to a feline sitting position. "I think...I think I want a refresher on why you're all sitting by my house, talking like I need to go somewhere."

She followed her comment by beginning to repeatedly run her tongue over her arm.
Hey there! Can I give you a hand?

Magpie looked at the now sitting girl and the light in its eyes dimmed for a short while before it looked over at the others.

"She is not ill?"

It observed Shawn for a little while before adding with some afterthought;

"What... is she ill of?"

"Shawn, to the best of my knowledge, usually resides in the form of a human child, though she has shown a talent for shapeshifting previously. It seems, though," the gensai said, expression carefully kept blank as always, "that she has gotten stuck."

Magpie looked at the gensai for a little while before it turned to look at Shawn again, its blank face showing little to no emotions what so ever.

"Is this form inconvenient to you, S...hawn?" It asked with a surprisingly plain voice.

Shawn spoke, while continuing to run her tongue down her arm. As such, it..Didn't really come out clearly. After a moment she stopped, and seemed..Confused.

"What are you guys talking about? I'm not-"

She looked herself over, her face scrunching up. "....Um...How did this happen?"

"It may not be my place to... comment on this situation..." Magpie began, sounding for the first time a bit unsure of itself, "But you seem to function properly in this form. Were you unaware that this change had occurred?" It paused for a little while before it spoke once more, sounding almost excited:

"Cats are very beautiful animals."

"Say, I'm skilled in the arcane arts," Asp pipes up, as if just reminded of this fact, "Not to worry, Shawn, we'll have this polymorph thing licked in no time."

"Now, are you now, or have you ever been, the subject of a dark and/or terrible curse?"

As he awaits a response, Asp casts a quick cantrip to aid him in his researches.

"There is no need to raise your voice." Magpie said calmly, "considering your recent behaviour, I had assumed you were aware of your condition. It is advisable that you calm down, a fit of hysteria will do no good as it is highly unlikely to cure whatever ailment has caused this."

Asp casts his spell, and though some of Shawn's equipment glows with weak magical auras, Shawn herself doesn't appear to have one of any sort. She looks completely non-magical, with not even the slightest glimmer of an enchantment or curse..

"Huh. Okay, so. Not a disease, and not a curse," Asp says, "Looks to be permanent. Which means we need something else permanent to fix it. Or at least ongoing. Not much point trying shapehanging spells; they'd only be a temporary fix at best."

Planewalker's Guild

Though Asp's attempts at determining the nature of Shawn's apparent "cure" are for naught, Florence isn't dissuaded, insisting that she come with her to find someone that can fix her and remove her condition. She departs Shawn's tent, getting ready to head out as soon as can be arranged.

Elsewhere, while Lorraine's spread word of the chaotic priests at Automaton, eventually another potential site spreads out amongst the group from Rosalyn thanks to her conversation with Theller; she's heard tell recently of an intriguing village deep in the Outlands, where magic begins to fail, that somehow has still managed to accrue a reputation of the removal of all manner of physical ailments, even those that fail to respond to divine methods. Though potentially interesting on its own, the strange part is none have heard any word from it in weeks. It may be worth an investigation.

Sorry it took me so long to broom here. For people I'm brooming past, you can keep going with CI if you'd like (either here, in PM with the player involved [just copy your PMs to me as well], or in chat), but otherwise we'll be moving on once I know what everyone's doing. Otherwise, go ahead and post which it is you'd like to be going on, or if you have your own idea separate from either of the two, go ahead and post that as well and it'll be another option for people to decide between.

(OOC: Rosalyn will, of course, go on the one she found, assuming enough other will too. Also, I'll see if I can't finish this conversation properly here.)

"It went rather well, really," Rosalyn said in answer to Theller's question, moving along with the change in subject. "Shawn and I managed to win admittance to the Anarchs' Guild in Xaos, and got to train with them in shaping the chaos matter. Asp and I also saved a half-elf from some Bacchae, and got a free container for the stuff as a reward. And, there was also one monster we ran into on the way to Elysium... A rather dangerous one, actually, but... well... we managed to defeat it, at least."

A bit of a sketchy description of that battle with the Mouther, to say the least, but she had been a bit muddled by the thing's insane and unending ramblings that had seemed to echoe through her very being when she heard them, and so she wasn't entirely sure of everything that had happened there.

"Oh, uh... since we're on this subject..." she moved on, getting back to her quest to gather a group for the next journey she meant to take, "I've heard of another place lately that might be interesting to look into. Apparently there's a village in the Outlands where people have been having afflictions cured without explanation. And on top of that... well... it also seems that nobody has heard anything out of the place lately. I've been trying to find some people to go along with me, but haven't had any luck yet today."

"The Outlands?" Theller asked. "A plane I've never seen. It might be interesting to travel there. Magic fails there, however, does it not? That might make that sort of journey...difficult. My magical abilities have been steadily improving and I would like to make some use of them, which I could not there."

"Ah... yes, magic is known to fail there," Rosalyn confirmed. "But this village is on the fifth ring, so quite a few spells would still work there. All but the most powerful ones, I think. Spells of moderate power can be troublesome, though."

She did pause for a moment though, thinking over what she knew of the place. It was her home-plane, so it wasn't entirely unfamiliar to her.

"... I believe... clerics also can't turn the dead there," she added after a moment. "Poison doesn't work there either, and certain creatures lose some of the magical abilities that they would normally have. But most spells should still work there, more or less."

Once things began to settle down outside of Shawn's tent, and people started to discuss where to go, Magpie found its attention wavering. It had promised Lorraine to join her in the journey to Automaton, and that's where it would go. It had very little in the way of preparations to make; after all, the only thing it really needed was the weapons, shields and field gear that was necessary for it, so it spent the remaining time just generally being around.

Asp opts to go along on the trip to Automaton, having visited the Outlands fairly recently and Automaton not at all. The interval before the trip he spends doing a little reasearch on shapechanging afflictions in the guild library.

"As far as I'm concerned, we can go as soon as I know whether anyone else is going," Rosalyn answered. "It might be dangerous, after all. Actually, we might need to take a few healing potions along, to be safe."

(OOC: Uh... And now, once Spleen responds anyway, I'd vote moving Rosalyn and Theller forward in time to the point where everyone else is, after they've done a bit of work spreading word of their mission, so that things don't get confusing.)
