Floating City - Walking the Street

He continues to guide them through the streets on what must be for him a well-traveled path, giving gestures of greetings to others in the city as they pass. "I am pleased to know you, Rosalyn. Now, when we met, Asperel mentioned you would soon to be having need of a carpenter? A container of some sort? I have experience making both barrels and crates of various sizes, if that is what your group had in mind."

Floating City - Underneath

Smiling back, Thilqua gives Shawn a look of approval. "You do seem to have a bond with this plane, yes. And though I can tell you are enjoying yourself, we are here to work on your shaping. Please, I offer you the lead here. Form whatever land about us you wish, and we shall see how well you can do. Large or small, simple or elaborate, the choice is yours."

Shawn nods, and tries to shape the land around her. She attempts to form it into lush, green farmlands with rolling hills, fenced in with simple wooden fences. She'll try to make it a nice, warm, sunny day with a few clouds in the sky, and an all around nice place.

Floating City - Underneath

Concentrating, Shawn forces her will on the area around herself. It takes a few seconds, but soon her mental image begins to impose itself on the plane around her. The air is the first to coalesce, and land gathers under her feet, grass sprouting from it. She can't make it as large as she pictured, but a fields slowly assemble themselves out about 30, maybe 35 feet in all directions, leaving her at the foot of a small hill just about her height. She and Thilqua slowly float to the ground as a patch of sky forms overhead. A small glowing orb fades into view, as miniature fluffy clouds drift past above her.

Thilqua looks around, examining the area, and though it looks mostly how Shawn pictured it, everything seems a little...artificial. The clouds are all the same balls of puff, the grass is a little too stiff, and the orb overhead resembles a hanging lantern in intensity and lighting more than a true sun. It looks nice overall, but if she looks at the little details, she can tell it's not the real thing. And Thilqua seems to notice it herself.

"A very nice first try, Shawn. Most go for simplicity. A field with a road, perhaps. I think you may have overextended yourself a little, however. If you push yourself too far too early, your mind loses track of details. With training, you will be able to form a field like this even better than you may picture it.

"And I must add, you seem much more comfortable with the act than I might expect from one not familiar with the land. No hesitation in your shaping. It is quite interesting to watch."

Shawn scrunched her face up a bit, and let the land shrink some, trying to fill in those details. "I'd like to think...I'm already..Pretty good."

Floating City - Underneath

Pulling in the land seems to help some, but most of the effort seems to be in imagining the terrain. Imagining this much detail is hard, and it's easy to slip into mental shortcuts. She shrinks her land down to a mere 10 feet in all directions, and though it still doesn't look perfect, it does look better. A light breeze blows the grass around as Thilqua takes another look around.

"Good, yes. But we all can improve. Shall we continue our walk? And this time, you shall be responsible for our land. Build it up in front of you as you move forward, and let it fall away behind."

Shawn nods, and begins walking. The hills continue to be lush, green, and of the rolling variety, but soon enough she'll throw in a lake, and some trees, and a road, though she'll feel no real need to actually begin walking on it.

Limbo

The two move farther from the city as Shawn works on her shaping skills. At times the morass obscures it from view, while at others it's crystal clear, even more so than the purest air. She does her best to add features to the land as she walks on, though she can feel each new object pushing a bit harder on her mind. But for the lake, of course, which is the easiest for her, if the strangest - less a full lake, and more a lake shore. The lake just cuts off at the edge of her shaping, as if a window was passing over the surface of a world and only that inside the window existed.

Thilqua gives her an appraising eye, paying more attention to her now than to the land around them. "This would be your first time practicing these skills, then, yes? Or had your party spent time in the chaos before arriving at the city?"

Limbo

She nods. "Though you needn't answer, I would be curious to know what sort, if not Limbo. But we also must focus more on your training. This seems like a suitable distance, I think."

Thilqua sits crosslegged on the ground, gesturing for Shawn to join her. "The first step is to focus only on the shaping. Clear your mind, close your eyes, and think only of the image of that which surrounds you. The details are not that important, as they rarely remain the same from moment to moment even elsewhere. The feel of the shape which surrounds us is what you should focus on. You must truly know what you wish to form."

"Oh, absolutely," Asp said, "The idea is to have a container that's sealed up so tightly that nothing can get in or out. That way we insulate the chaos matter from the outside world, so hopefully it doesn't turn into anything and disappear. Although," he continued, frowning, "We won't know if it's worked until we open the barrel. So anyway, we're probably going to wind up trying something else as well, just in case."

Floating City

Considering the situation, Haz'kiah thoughtfully stares off into space as he continues leading them along. "I see. Hmm...I do not know if it will be possible to do this with wood. There are other crafters in Xaos, though, and I am sure something could be made. Of course, the obvious solution to your other problem is to include a segment of glass, to allow you to see inside. Perhaps even to make it entirely as a thick bottle, as glass is much more containing than many other substances."

Stopping at a wall sconce in the side of a building, he gestures to the unlit lantern hanging before it. "Please, after you. Grab the...ah, you may need help with this, Asperel. But you must grab the light to trigger the portal."

"No, no, I can get it. I think," Asp said, gathering himself for a leap at the wall sconce. If after a few tries he hadn't got it, he might surrender to being picked up. Then again, he might try to emulate that running-up-the-wall trick he'd seen certain monks do.

Shawn will nod, sitting crosslegged, and try to reshape the land around her into a smooth cavern, not entirely sure of what she needs to do.

Floating City

Making a leap, Asp manages to grab hold of the lantern. It flares up with a flash of blinding light, and when it fades, Asp is gone. Looking to Rosalyn, Haz'kiah speaks up. "After you? The portal will bring you to the edge of Xaos in the Outlands."

And indeed, that's where Asp finds himself, landing on the ground a bit roughly near a saddle-shaped boulder on its side about twice his height, curving around him to either side. About 10 minutes' walk ahead, he can see a fairly bustling and boisterous city with no apparent rhyme, reason, or even thought put into its design. From the look of it, buildings are built wherever a person wants to build them, in whatever style, material, and even color they might wish. Overhead, a blue sky hangs, if one lacking in suns, and around him, a sparsely-grassed field stretches in all directions. Not too far, a small creek runs over the land. Forests and hills dot the horizon, and the infinitely-tall Spire stretches up into the sky to his left, Sigil's ring floating above it as always.

Of course, how he can see the top of an infinitely-tall object, he doesn't exactly know.

Limbo

The land about Shawn reshapes itself into a cavern, surrounding and protecting them. The light dims, though it doesn't leave entirely, and this type of land seems to be a little less tiring on her mind at the moment.

"Good. As you shape this land, consider every part of it. Let yourself know it as it would truly be, and allow that knowledge to instruct your creation. And know that as you shape, you are putting yourself into your creation as much as you are forming it. How a person's shapings take form can tell one much about that person. Many hold themselves back, and this is why they do not progress. Slowly overcoming these inhibitions and fears will be an important part of your learning."

As she continues to form the cavern around her, she can almost feel the flow of Limbo trying in vein to tear her creation down, resisting the imposition of order on its contents. But she keeps her creation firm and steady; surprisingly, holding it together is the easiest part of creating the terrain, it would seem.

Concentrating so strongly on her terrain, Shawn almost misses it when Thilqua speaks up. "Oh, it would appear we have a visitor, Shawn. This would be the first time you've met a true native of Limbo, yes?"

She can't spot who Thilqua means at first, until finally she sees it near the entrance. A protrusion of rock near the wall, but hovering in the air. As she watches, it floats towards the two of them. It changes briefly into a swirling whirlwind of fire, before taking the form of a twisted mass of grass and petals.

It speaks up somehow, its voice androgynous but sounding generally cheerful. "Hello! Uh...are you new people, or are you the person I talked to before?

Shawn tries to keep a hand on the terrain, though allows herself some slack. "...No, I don't...Think so."

Hopefully she hadn't run into anyone that remembers her from the night before.

The plantlife gives way to a glowing red light as the person(?) replies. "Oh! Well, you're new then. Well...good! You people change so little it's hard to tell sometimes.

"Did you make this place?," it asks as its form condenses into a cloud of dust, rushing past Shawn's head and stinging her eyes a bit. "It's very...uh...solid. That's a good thing for you, right? The other one made a lot of things that looked like you people out of this stuff. Are you sure you're not that person?"

And while this goes on, Thilqua just steps back, letting Shawn take the brunt of the conversation.

Asp spends his time while waiting for the others to catch up looking around. Being able to see the top of what is clearly an infinitely tall tower is something of a puzzler, but he resolves not to dwell on it too much. After all, who's he to say what's impossible?

Once Asp disappeared, Rosalyn gave a nod to Haz'kiah and reached for the lantern herself. Teleportation now, eh? There was a leap of faith involved with that, but that didn't bother her.

"Oh. Are you stuck too? It said it was stuck here, but I don't know why it would want to leave. There's so much stuff to do here, but I guess it's because you all are always the same, huh?" The dust begins to glow as their guest changes into a cloud of sparks, but only for an instant before even they disappear; it must be air right now. "Must get boring, I bet. What are you doing here, anyway? And how come you have to make stuff out of Limbo anyway? What, it's not good enough for you? Maybe I should go to your home and start making things out of your stuff! How'd you like that, huh?"

There's a brief moment of silence before it reappears, its shape something like a big mass of clay floating next to Shawn's belt and its voice much calmer. "Hey, neat, what's this pointy thing you have?"

The Outlands - Outside Xaos

Rosalyn appears shortly behind Asp, taking in the same sight as the kender, and Haz'kiah joins them soon after. Pointing off towards one of the buildings on the outskirts of the city, he says, "My workshop isn't far. I shall see what I can do, and if I cannot think of a good way to go about it, I can introduce you to some other artisans. Now, how large of a container were you wanting, again?"

"You wouldn't like my stuff." Shawn replies. "It all stays in one shape." ...Well, most of it, anyway.

Shifting into rolls of vibrant blue cloth, it doesn't seem to notice as it collapses on the ground, speaking as if nothing's happened. "Maybe I could take them off of things too.
