Lux smiles at Joss, sitting down and dangling one leg over the edge. "Knowledge is a powerful master. Some become obsessed with controlling it as much as possible, while others become so enthralled by the prospect of owning some small piece of knowledge that they lose all touch with reality. I studied...well for many reasons. Curiosity, I suppose, and the desire to see if there was any forgotten tidbits that might help someone somewhere. But in the end I came to the conclusion that experience trumps knowledge. I penned some pretty words to that effect, something about fluidity versus rigidity. But when I presented it to my senior he burned it, and harsh words were exchanged." And that wasn't even the worst of my problems at that place. It was still many months after that event before I was firmly pushed out of those gates. "Your friend sounds interesting, I would be happy to meet her or view some of her work. I like people who appreciate things for what they are, sometimes it's just nice to look at the view." Lux turns from Joss to once more gaze out at the void of smoke, lazily raising his hand to disturb one of the insects that was considering perching on his hat brim.

Adrift

Dina chuckles, leaning back in her own chair. "Ah, that's the important part, ain't it? Always rough t' get somewhere and find out someone else beat ya to it." But with a grin, she adds, "Makes it all the better when you're on the other end of it, though. Just seein' the look on the faces of the folks you beat when you tell them all they missed."

She twists sideways in her seat towards the group, resting an elbow on the back and holding her head in her hand, before continuing on with a smile, "Hey, if you lot're going t' be in this plane for a while, lemme give you a little tip. Grab some kinda seasoning here in town while you've got th' chance. It'll be a little spendy, but it's worth it. Somethin' about this plane makes food turn bland on you. It's got somethin' t' do with how Steam is opposed to Salt or some nonsense, so Len - he'd be my group's greybeard - so Len tells me. I say it's bits o' feggis, myself. Whatever it is, though, you'll want something to keep your food tasting better than mush. Even gets t' rations after too long. Trust me on this, you'll be glad for it after a week or two."

Nodding, Zant made a mental note of the woman's advice. "My thanks, Dina. Tell me, though, where might we find one well versed in the geography of this plane? Our own...greybeard's research indicated that the tower lies between the borders with the plane of positive energy and the plane of ice."

The idea that the Plane of Steam was opposed to Salt was a bit disconcerting, more so even than the knowledge that Adrift was a floating...

...Heh. So that's why it was called Adrift...

Anyway, back to why the Plane of Steam being opposed to Salt was disconcerting:

"Doesn't the human body contain a certain amount of salt?" Rosalyn asked aloud. "Uh... to your knowledge, Dina, does prolonged exposure to this plane have any adverse effect on people that might be caused by the level of salt in their bodies decreasing?"

In any case, she would have to be sure to buy plenty of salt before the group left the city. The need might be more dire than simple flavoring of food.

Another thought also occurred to her.

"I'll bet a merchant could make a fortune going between here and the Plane of Salt."

Adrift

Dina lets out a sharp laugh to Rosalyn; one of those sorts that's just a bit grating at first, but a person could get used to quickly. "Oh, they do, believe me. Not th' safest or quickest of trips, but but one thing y' can always rely on; when there's somethin' people want that they don't have, a jink-shifter'll pick up th' scent sooner or later. Part of th' Unity of Rings, I'd guess. If somethin's missin' from a place, it'll find a way to get there anyway."

"Th' health stuff...," she trails off, pausing for a bit as she glances towards the desk, frowning just a bit and leaning forward anxiously. "Eh, can't say for that, 'cept that I feel fine and I've been here for days, but th' supplies we brought with us barely lasted a day 'fore they went bland. Len never said anything 'bout that, and he'd be th' first to harp on somethin' like that."

Her frown clearing, Dina turns to Zant. "And geography...well, this's probably th' best place to find out. Somewhere like this, where folks fly out all over the plane...you're bound t' find someone here to get you t' this tower.

"...Y' know, don't think I've got your names yet." She chuckles, a lighter sound this time, as she looks over the whole group. "But of an unbalanced situation, eh?"

"Yeah, she was an awesome lady." He scratched the top of his head and continued watching as the other crews managed their respective duties. What an interesting place. Always something happening. "Always wanted me to cut my hair, though."

Still, something was bothering him. Lux seemed like an intelligent and approachable sort. Further, he was an accomplished scholar interested in doing more than reading about the experiences of others. It was an important role to play, and Joss wished that more were willing to do it. So why would his superiors have treated him so poorly? What kind of short-sighted, narrow-minded, petty fools had Lux been working for then?

He had to say something. "Y'know what? That's total shit, what your boss did. That's exactly what goes wrong with grownups half the time. Too busy trying to prove they're right to go out and see if they are." He gave one heavy and exasperated sigh. "I dunno. Sucks that he burned what you wrote; seems like it's the kind of stuff that more people should read. I'd have kicked his ass for it. He's not still in charge of things there, is he?"

It was a bit of a relief that none of Dina's group had complained of any worse effects than bland food. Of course, bland food alone was reason enough to stock up on seasoning.

"My name's Rosalyn Lachaille," was the figher's answer to Dina's inquiry regarding names. "Rose, if you prefer."

Harbormaster's office

Nodding to each as they give their names, she turns to Zant at his question. "Oh, we go about th' hard way usually. Most of th' time just swimmin'. Goin' for a plummet in a plane like this isn't the smartest of ideas, after all. You never know when somethin's going t' pop up in front of you."

While she gives her answer, the others notice the crowds seem to be clearing, as one of the clerks beams a beckoning smile towards them. It doesn't take long for this to catch Dina's eye either, grinning to the lot of them. "Well, looks like you've got your chance finally. You'll probably want t' hurry; I might be tempted t' swoop in and take your spot while the chance's open." Stretching in her chair, she gives a sharp laugh at her comment before looking towards the doorway expectantly, waiting for the momentary lull in activity to fill once more.

Rosalyn noticed the crowd at one of the decks clearing and the clerk behind it looking in the direction of her group. She started to stand up, pausing only long enough to hear Dina's last remark.

"On it," Rosalyn quickly acknowledged.

Then she quickly stepped up to the desk. Her main goal in this was more to claim the territory for her group than to actually make an inquiry, though she did go ahead and do that as well.

"Good day, sir," she said. "My party is searching for a certain location on this plane. A tower of ice, which seems to be located on the borders of this plane, the Plane of Ice, and the Plane of Positive Energy. We were wondering if perhaps one of the steamship crews would know where we could find such a place."

Harbormaster's office

Giving Rosalyn an odd look at her description, the mephit begins paging through a vellum book on the desk. His skin hisses like water dripped on a hot cooking stone, sending vapor into the air around them as he speaks, a slight rasp to his voice.

"You sure about that? Have to say, that's a new one. The Tower of Ice? Let's see...well...there aren't any ships heading to either Positive or Ice any time soon. You might be in luck though...there's a merchant ship heading to pick up some cargo from Lightning soon, they might be convinced to drop you off along the way, pick you up on the way back. Should run you about 25 gold a head both ways, I imagine, but that's no promise; up to the captain to decide what he'll charge you.

"He's heading out in...5 hours. From the second green dock. The Wisprunner, captained by...Yunefrithanak, lord of merchants, envy of the Mercane, master of the boiling waves."

That he can say this with a straight face itself indicates much of the personality of mephits.

Zant nodded to Dina in thanks for her assistance before walking up to join Rosalyn. The price the mephit announced caught him a little off guard, but he remained silent, mentally noting the details of the pier, ship's name, owner and the full title of the latter. A man who insisted on having such penned into book would probably react poorly if someone addressed him "improperly."

Anne followed along, and stifled a groan when she heard the price. 25 gold? That was an awful lot of money , but then again, there wasn't any other choice. She's just have to grin and bear it. Anne leaned back, and stuffed her hands in her pocket.

"So..." she said, looking between Zant and Rosalyn, "It's about five hours til take off. What do we do til then?"

Rosalyn let out a whistle on hearing the price. 25 gold a head, both ways? She could see why Dina's group usually swam. Too bad Rosalyn had that metal breastplate to deal with.

She turned back to face Zant and Anne.

"50 gold for each of us for the whole trip," she recounted. "I don't even have 50 gold. Maybe I could sell this armor off and go back to leather, but... that would be quite a waste."

Despite not being faced, the clerk speaks up to Rosalyn's comment. "Eh? No, 25 gold a head both ways, for the whole trip. Not each way. Spendy, sure, but not that spendy."

Well, things are pretty much free now. People can go ahead and decide what they're doing over the next five hours, so long as you post/PM/IM about it. Once everyone's things are taken care of and CIing's trailed off, we'll move on to the trip. Kai and Gus, go ahead and do the same; I think we can assume someone'll tell Lux and Joss what's going on sooner or later.

Hearing the news of the wait, Lux tries to think how he can use the time well. "Hmm, we may never return to this place, and the mystery of this location does still call to me. I wonder if any archive or place of culture can be found. I imagine such a setting as this has inspired great artistic endeavor." He sets off to ask anyone he can find whether such a place exists in Adrift.

"My apologies," Rosalyn said to the mephit. "25 for the whole trip... A bit more manageable."

Once the group dispersed from the docks, Rosalyn returned to Obscurity. Her purposes were twofold. One was to try the baked javoose, being bound by the tenets of her religious order to try to experience any local delicacies whenever the opportunity presented itself. The other was to inquire as to where seasonings for the trip could be purchased, intent on following Dina’s advice on that matter. While she was at it, she also took the opportunity to ask whether the animals native to Steam had any salt naturally in their bodies, still curious about the effects the plane had on living creatures.

Adrift

For now, the groups part, each pursuing their own interests in the Inner Planar city.

Rosalyn returns to the inn, to fulfill her duties to Fharlanghn. Her meal's certainly an odd one; a couple of slabs of half-transparent meat, garnished with a bluish-green lettuce-like leaf. The taste, though...it's subtle, and buried under a release of trapped water, but it's there. Just slightly reminiscent of beef, as if she were eating an unmarinated steak underwater. Though not bad, exactly, it's not an especially filling meal. After her food, she pays her tab, and moves on to her next task.

While poking around the market, looking for a salt merchant, Rosalyn's joined by Anne, who seems to have been in the process of doing the same while she ate. With their numbers doubled - tripled, even, as Shawn joins them in the middle of their search - they have better luck, coming across a stand where a large block of the white mineral sits, offering a packet of scrapings from it for a silver a pouch. Despite the humidity of this realm, it looks to be utterly untouched by the mist, even perhaps repelling it. The group makes their purchases, and split once more, each pursuing their own interests.

Meanwhile, while Rosalyn was satiating her curiosity and her appetite, Lux and Joss were in the process of looking about the city, seeking out great works of art to gaze upon. It doesn't take long for them to encounter Zant, who seems to be interested in some sight-seeing of his own. And after a short bit of inquiry, the trio are pointed to the dead center of town, where they're told there's a sight of a lifetime.

And indeed, this comment proves true when they arrive, joining with Anne and Shawn fresh off their salt purchase along the way. There, the travelers take in for the first time the Floating Statues of Adrift. For the city seems not to have been built on a disc, but a ring, with a circular gap easily a half-mile across, somehow clear of fog, sitting in the center. And within this gap: statues, each at least a thousand feet tall, of human men and women. They're utterly still relative to the city, neither spinning nor drifting on the air, and despite the wide patches of this plane's ever-present bluish moss clinging to the stonework, their craftsmanship looks incredible; indeed, they appear to not be the only travelers gaping at the sight, as others can be seen standing and watching all along the inner edge.

But the biggest shame of all; the statues are but in pieces now, floating in a vague semblance of their original construction as they have ever been, as far as any questioned citizens are aware. Some merely have a separated arm or head, floating near where it was once attached. Others are wholly fragmented, recognizable only through the orientation of the pieces against one another. Despite the harm wrought, however, the beauty of the work is unmistakable. Whoever formed these, mortal or no, was quite obviously a master at their craft.

Eventually, however, their time in the city draws short, and with but an hour remaining before the departure of the Wisprunner, they reconvene at the dock. There, the steamship readies itself for departure, a gangplank stretched up to its deck as steam mephits and humanoids alike load crates up, check rigging, and prepare the large puffy creature lashed to the gondola for the trip. It appears that Joss might have his chance after all.

However, not all news can be good: Besides Zant, the party's breath is starting to become somewhat ragged, the effort of drawing in such moisture-laden air starting to show its effect. Though still not half as bad as Joss's research had indicated, it's still showing its effects on the party, if subtly. Still, they struggle through it, overcoming the obstacle as best as each among them is able.

As mentioned, their time in Steam does seem to be getting to the party: as of now, everyone but Zant is fatigued from the thick air. With time, they'll likely adjust, but for now it's like being in the middle of a rain forest at high noon during monsoon season all the time. Only worse.

As for the various purchases people made: Rosalyn's meal was 5 silver overall, and the packets of salt were 1 silver apiece. Spendy, yes, but it's what the market'll bear here; blame planar cosmology.

Anne, Rosalyn, and Shawn should each mention, ICly or OOCly, how many (if any) packets each of them purchased, for records purposes. There's enough in one for about 6 meals'-worth for a single person, or a single meal for the whole party.

Finally, as for Rosalyn's question: as her meal might suggest, if they have any it's a very small amount. They seem to be mostly water by and large, much like the more elemental inhabitants.

"And yet common knowledge on my home plane would have you believe that the air at watery locations such as the sea shore is good for you! Building up the lungs and clearing the airways and all that." Lux pauses for a few breaths, one hand on his thoracic diaphragm. "My only hope is that we become used to this, build some sort of tolerance up, eh?" He then turns to their craft of choice. "My word, it just gets better and better, doesn't it?" And there's that smile again, his hunger for new experiences rushing forward to control his actions.

"Waterlord willing." Zant replied to Lux's remark about the air and tolerance. He wasn't feeling any sort of ill effect himself, but it would be a shame if other races constantly had to struggle against the conditions of this place. He was ready to embark, though he was happy spending a moment or two more admiring the odd vessel from the outside.

As spendy as the salt might have been, Rosalyn saw fit to purchase 42 packets of the stuff. Even if she was providing for the whole group, that would be enough for two whole weeks.

By the time she drew near the steamship that was to be their ride, Rosalyn too found herself growing weary from the moist air. Luckily, she was sturdy for a human, so she was able to forge ahead with less difficulty than some might experience.

She reached the docks and found where the group was gathering. Here she sat down the sack that currently contained the heaviest part of her load, crossing her arms as she looked up to watch the creature at the top of the ship being prepared.

"We probably will get used to this with time," she predicted optimistically. "Everyone else here apparently has."

(OOC: Just to confirm that my math my math is right:

4 gold and 2 silver for the salt + 5 silver for the meal + 25 gold for the ride = 29 gold and 7 silver for the total cost, right?)

Not bothering with any sort of spices, or salts, or anything of the sort, Shawn seemed happy enough with her candy stash. She sat quietly at the docks..At least until the steamship came into sight.

"..I was really hoping that we wouldn't have to actually ride one of those things. Real steamships are so much more exciting."

After all, how often can you say your boat exploded on you?

Ready to embark, the party climbs the gangplank, and are met atop the ship's deck by one of the crew. A human, one of a minority amongst the steamsailors, looking over the gathered six expectantly.

"You'd be the passengers we were told about, eh? Hmm. Well, we're going out of our way to take you, so it won't be cheap. 30 gold passage a head. 15 if you're willing to do some work. Nothing too harsh - you'll still be passengers, after all. Keeping watch, working the rigging, taking care of the fabere. It'll be about a three day trip to the Raging Mists, and we'll be back for you a day later.

"Any questions?"

Zant nodded with interest at the prospect of a reduced fare. The saving was pleasing, and the idea of gaining an understanding of how such a peculiar vessel was run wasn't unattractive either.

"None from myself. I am willing to work for part of my fare, personally."

A day later? Well, she'd overestimated the length of the stay, it seemed. Ah well, at least she wouldn't have to worry about running low on salt anytime soon.

For the same reasons as Zant, Rosalyn was also interested in the prospect of doing bit of work for a reduced fare. Couldn't let herself get soft on the three-day trip, after all, now could she?

"I've no questions either," Rosalyn said. "But I would be willing to do some work as well."

A day later? Well that wasn't so bad. Certainly it would be enough time for them to give the place a really good look, and if things got hairy (not that they would, of course not), they'd only have to hide out and watch their backs for a day.

"I'm good," she said, "but I'll just be paying the full amount, thanks." If it was any other ship, Ann would've taken the work in a heartbeat, but now she wasn't so sure. While she wasn't a soft woman by any means, dealing with the steam was bad enough, even when they weren't doing much of anything. No, no, it'd be better to pay the extra gold (even if thirty coins was highway - or rather, airway - robbery), and save her strength until she got used to it.

Lux looks at Ann with clear disbelief on his face. "You'd gladly miss a chance to learn more about this...this," Lux stammers, wildly waving his hands in the direction of the vessel while searching for the right words, "this...this? 15 gold and a tour of minor duties sounds like a pleasure to me."

"If you have anything for someone my size, I can do it." Shawn says, adjusting her scarf and goggles. "On top of that, I can help fix things on the ship, and all that sort of thing."

She thought for a second, then began again. "Questions...Um, all I have is that I need a room to myself, and the understanding that I'll need to break for a few minutes of every hour, will that be okay?"
Hey there! Can I give you a hand?

Adrift

The party heads up the gangplank, as the crewman collects payments from its members. The 40-foot-wide sphere of a creature looms above, tethered to the gondola - equally as long and just under 15 feet tall, perhaps as much across. A small structure in the center leads down to the lower decks, and in lieu of a traditional steering wheel, a pair of mephits clamber along netting covering its surface. Overall, there looks to be at least ten watching over the ship and creature, and half as many not of the elemental persuasion.

Nodding to Shawn, the crewman replies, "Seems like you're new to the plane, so we'll let you each have what breaks you need. Usually takes a couple days for your lungs to get used to the air here. And you'll each get a small bunk to yourselves too, plus meals. The mephits don't need to eat or sleep, so we've got more room than we'd need otherwise.

"Just keep in mind, I know things are different outside the Inner, but the mephits are equals here. 'cept for the captain, of course; he's in charge of the lot of us. Keep that in mind, eh? I've seen more than a few outsiders treat them as nothing more than summon fodder. If you don't want to swim your way, you'll remember that."

Joss frowned at the disclaimer about treatment of the mephits. Of course he wouldn't disrespect them. They were part of the crew! What a horrifying thought. Some travellers were disappointingly... well... missing the point! He was enough of a boy that he wished there was something he could do to make them feel like he appreciated them, but enough of an adult to realize he'd probably just get it wrong if he tried.

He held back a sigh. Maybe an opportunity would come up and maybe it wouldn't, but he resolved to be extra careful of them while he was helping work for his fare. His mother hadn't taught him please and thank you for nothing.

Rosalyn gave a nod of acknowledgement at the statement concerning the mephits. She wasn't a wizardly type and had therefore had few interactions with the beings. They seemed to be intelligent creatures, so she saw no reason to treat them as anything less.

Furthermore, they had the experience running this ship, so they'd probably be the ones telling her what to do. Therefore, she probably wouldn't have gotten a chance to treat them as lessers even if she wanted to.

Zant simply nodded to the man, having had some experience with mephits before. The company of ones back home could be... trying at times, though. He resolved to be extra vigilant in his dedication to the principles of the Waterlord.

Adrift

"You'll be bunking on the first deck, with the crew. We'll be shipping out soon, so go ahead and settle in. If you find an empty bunk, go ahead and take it, and if you need anything once we're out, the name's Richard. Once you're settled and off, come on deck and we can find you lot some work."

With that said, he heads below himself with a nod, leaving the party to disperse to their own desires. Those that head below find their rooms...if one can even call them that, at least. Cramped areas, 5 feet deep and barely 8 feet across, and all about the same: a small bed in back, a footlocker in the corner with a small key sitting in the lock, a glassed-over porthole to look out on the mists, and not much else. Enough for a short trip like this, at least, but not somewhere a person'd like to spend much time.

Meanwhile, the cargo deck is a bit more expansive, if hardly any more entertaining. Divided into two portions, the larger of the two is filled with a variety of crates, chests, boxes, and all else a person could expect on a shipping vessel. The smaller, at least, is a bit more interesting; the ship's "lounge", little more than an extra hold with a pantry, some tables and chairs, and in one corner a likely-unfamiliar-looking game with a hexagonal grid and a collection of black and white stones.

An hour or so passes, and the ship presses out as the party gathers abovedecks once more. It's a unique form of travel; not smooth, but exciting, shooting along on jets of pressurized steam from the being - the fabere, apparently - overhead, zooming forward far faster than a horse's gallop. The wisps of fog whip back along the sides of the steamship, and the Wisprunner recedes from Adrift, soon showing for the curious that indeed, nothing supports it at all.

Speaking with Richard, they each that wished to do so get their choice of jobs to perform - and there's certainly no lack of them. But it's first-come, first-serve, so if they've got something special in mind, they'd better speak up quick.

So, the party has the following jobs to choose from.

<strike>Steering and feeding the fabere - 2 openings</strike> - Claimed by Rosalyn and Joss
<strike>Taking care of the rigging</strike> - Claimed by Anne
<strike>Cleaning the decks</strike> - Claimed by Zant
Taking inventory of the cargo hold
<strike>Keeping watch from the upper perch (for those that don't mind heights)</strike> - Claimed by Shawn
Helping to prepare "meals"

Anything involving climbing up onto the fabere would have heavy interactions with the mephits, if that's a factor for or against for anyone.

Unless people end up posting otherwise, the next update will occur some hours after departure, so go ahead and take into account that fact in your next post. If you're unsure what all exactly the job you want will entail for you to describe in your next post, contact me and I'll give you the details.

Additionally, anyone that expresses interest in the board game in the lounge would quickly find themselves approached by Gathenrakfast, Master of the Gaming Arts; it seems most of the rest of the crew's grown bored of "constantly losing to his strategic mastery" and he's quite eager to teach another, if someone's willing.

Wisprunner

Their jobs decided, the party quickly takes up their tasks with relish, putting their all in for the ship. And though the feel of the voyage may be exhilirating, the sight of rushing mist soon grows monotonous. Thinner in some places, thicker in others; pure white, light grey, or even a slight sickly green tint; it may vary as they travel, but it's still much the same from hour to hour. Luckily, they each have their duties to occupy their time, with some not even out watching the clouds whizzing past the ship.

Soon, some five hours later, the ship slows to a stop, Captain Yunefrithanak calling out from his position at the bow of the ship. "All crew, thirty-minute stop!" Joss and Rosalyn know, it's time to feed the fabere, their satchels of moss ready in their pouches to offer to the massive beast. The rest, however, are free to take their own extended break for now. Most can feel themselves slowly getting used to the air; they're not feeling in top condition just yet, but perhaps another day or two and they'll feel more suited in this realm.

But for now, there's the chance for a short bite before they're back to work. The crew begins getting their own tasks in order before heading down, making small-talk to one another; up on the fabere, Gathenrakfast chats up Shawn as she descends down the netting. Hovering beside her as she climbs, he remains careful not to drip any of the endless hissing water left by his skin on the rigging about her. "I think we might have time for a quick game before we're back out, if you're fine with spending your time losing. Sounds like a couple of your friends're interested too, so at least you'll have company in your sorrow!" With a brash laugh, he drops to the deck at the base of the rope, waiting for her to catch up before speaking further.

Meanwhile, Zant learns that mopping up these trails of warm condensation makes up the lions'-share of his work here; something the crew refrained from telling him about before. But it wouldn't do to have the non-mephits slipping about, after all, so he does what he must, sparing the other party members from the most tiring of the jobs offered. Anne weaves about him and the rest of the crew, tugging each line in sequence as instructed, looking for any signs of loosening as the fabere - Zippy by name - shifts about under his net, stretching at the lines as he pulls the ship along. Everything seems in order so far, with no signs of danger to be seen.

Gus, go ahead and work in what Lux would have ended up choosing; both jobs stick him belowdecks anyway, so either way you'll be in the lower section. But he'd notice soon enough that the ship's stopped moving, and one of the other crewman would tell him what's going on when asked.

Shawn:
Spoiler:
As you climb down the rope, you could swear you saw a bit of movement in the mist, something more than just it drifting about.

Shawn twisted her arm through the rigging as best as she could, and leaned out to get a better look. "..Hold on..I think something's out there!"
Hey there! Can I give you a hand?

Zant took to his work with as much dedication as he could muster. While he was the best suited for the job it was hard work, and his limbs were beginning to ache. He thanked Istishia for providing him with a moist atmosphere; at least thirst wasn't an issue. When he heard Shawn call out he stopped for a moment, looking up at her.

"Are you able to make out the nature of it?"

"It's..Like a bunch of little guys moving around. About...My size." Shawn replied, pulling herself back to the rigging securely.
