Zant took a step back, blinking and seemingly jarred by something. Holding his ground, he muttered a quick prayer to The Water Lord, asking for a small boon.

"Anyone else get the feeling that somethingis amiss here? Why does it almost feel as if the object is on display?" Lux turns around to look back in the direction they had come from, "And has anyone else been curious as to where our companion has gone off to?"

Lorraine blinked, forgetting her frustrations for a moment, and she walks along the curve of the tunnel until she can reach the glittery object.

"Do you think this could be it?"

She didn't actually bother waiting for anyone to answer, before picking it up to examine it more closely.

Mines of Marsellin

While Lorraine heads forward and picks the brooch up, Zant focuses on it, studying it from a distance as Istishia grants his servant his request.

Zant:
Spoiler:
You detect something, but it isn't quite magic. It's a faint aura, but you can't determine anything about it beyond that. Beyond the brooch, you can also make out a pair of similarly faint auras near it on the tunnel walls, relatively "above" Lorraine.

After another look back for the little one, Gulrd shakes his head at Lorraine. "Not even close. Nice one, though," he looks at it, "looks completely fresh. Strangely so..."

Zant didn't like this one bit, and silently thanked his lord for answering the call.

"Stop! There's something else down there."

He edged back a step. "I have a bad feeling about this."

Mines of Marsellin

Lorraine looks around, checking the tunnel walls, but she sees nothing out of the ordinary. Nor does the rest of the group, examining for any sign of what it is Zant's noticed.

Not for a couple of seconds, at least.

But after those seconds, the entire party sees a motion from two points above Lorraine's head, looking for all the world like a pair of iron spiders, each easily the size of a man. They don't move like constructs, though; natural camouflage, perhaps? But matters of biology are hardly an issue right now, as both seem quite irritated. And though none here have any direct knowledge of spider anatomy (except maybe Lux; who knows what that guy's studied?), they all get the sense that their irritation is focused directly "below" them, on the pale mage with the shiny brooch.

Combat begins! Initiative order:

Lorraine: 21
Vance: 19
Zant: 15
Spider1: 12
Lux: 10
Gulrd: 6
Spider2: 4

Combat map - Because of the weird gravity, for purposes of reach/range/area of effect, 2 left-right squares = 7' and 4 left-right squares = 15'. Movement is still normal, though the left and right edge of the combat map wrap around.

The two spiders and Zant get a surprise round first, and then the rest of the group can enter into the fray. And since I know as well as the rest of you how much board combat can bog down, here's how this is going to work. First, no worries about posting in initiative order. If you have a move, make it.

Second, feel absolutely free to post up to two rounds' worth of moves in your post. With conditionals even, if you'd like; "John'll do this if the spider's still alive that round, otherwise he'll do this." This applies to the surprise round too, go ahead and post what you'll be doing on your first round or rounds of combat after surprise. If something comes up where the move you posted is no longer feasible or especially dangerous, I'll try to get in touch with you for an alternate move, and if I can't do that then I'll come as close to it as I can without endangering your character more than you'd have expected originally. Surprise rounds doesn't count for this, so Jak, go ahead and post up to two rounds after the surprise as well.

Third, if too long goes without a post from a character (let's say 24 hours), I'll go ahead and NPC their moves as ICly and fairly as I can, just to keep things going. I'll try to stick with this, and we'll be using this in combats even if the PC is simply indisposed, just to keep from slowing things down too much.

Zant's hand went for his weapon, the warhammer feeling like an extension of his own self. With a quick thought to how water divided lost its crushing weight he moved forward to back up Lorraine, readying his chosen weapon to strike.

(Move to the square to the right of Lorraine, and ready an attack action.)

Mines of Marsellin - Surprise Round

Zant moves forward to Lorraine's side as the spiders shift about, aiming their spinnerets at the pair and discharging webbing at the two. Lorraine and Aaron are caught in the sticky strands, pinning her in place until she can escape, though Zant just manages to dodge out of the way as it slams into the floor. Seeing Zant still free, the two remain on the ceiling for now, staring down at the group of five, tensed and ready to act.

Lorraine is stuck in webbing; DC 16 Strength check or DC 12 Escape Artist check to get out as a standard action, or she can try to cut herself free. You can still spellcast, but it's a DC 15 Concentration check to do so while you're stuck.

Lorraine:
Spoiler:
Aaron does not like this at all! He is uncomfortable and covered with sticky stuff!

Vance moves ten feet forward, drawing the larger of his two polearms out, and quickly moving to the right until he stood on the ceiling on the same side as the right(?) spider...and seemed to point the weapon outward...almost daring the metallic things to get anywhere near him...

"Come on, you fuckers. Try your fucking worst. I DARE you!"

(Move 4 squares to the right, readying action to attack if either spider gets within threatened space)

Mines of Marsellin

Lorraine attempts to pull her way through the webbing, to no avail; it's just too tough for her to rip apart. Aaron chews on it, pulling himself away from it and loosening a few feathers in the process, but he has little more luck than Lorraine at disentangling himself.

Vance moves into position on the spider's side of the tunnel wall and pulls his polearm into position, ready to impale his arachnid foe while Zant prepares the same with his warhammer. Zant's preparations seem fairly useless, as his spider seems more inclined to keep at a distance for now. Once more readying its spinnerets, it tries to rotate, though this time around its leg seems to be caught...stuck in the shadows, by all appearances. It bites at the dark substance holding its leg firm in an attempt to free it, pulling itself against the shade to no avail.

Lux and Gulrd keep to similar tactics themselves, staying in position and drawing their respective bows. And though Gulrd's arrow misses its mark against the entrapped spider by a wide span, Lux manages to score a hit on his target, bringing a hiss from the spider standing before Vance. In reaction, it shoots a blast of webbing that just skirts Vance's shoulder, leaving a slight residue in its wake, before retreating further from the party.

Lorraine fails the Strength check, as mentioned. Vance moves into position and readies an action. Zant readies. Spider1 attempts to fire a web, but is unable to. Lux fires his crossbow at Spider2, hits for 8 damage. Gulrd fires his bow, misses Spider1. Spider2 fires a web at Vance, misses, and retreats.

Lorraine:
Spoiler:
From Aaron: Ew, this web isn't just sticky, it tastes terrible too!

The situation was well in hand now. The warrior was in his element and the bard had shown he was proficient with more than one stringed instrument. He went on the offensive, trying to close with the thing before it had a chance to employ its webbing again, trusting the odd gravity of the tunnel to allow him to do so.

(Move and attack)

Vance's gaze shifted from the nearer spider who had run away after its failed attack, to the slightly further one. Grinning, he hefts his poleaxe, before rushing forward almost recklessly before bringing the heavy weapon to bear on the closer metal buglike object, sounds accompanying including the sound of boots on metal ceiling-floor and the shout of "go to HELL!!!"

...okay, so not everyone's exactly creative in what they say during a fight.

(Charge attack on Spider A. Assuming it continues to live past Lorraine's turn. This activates the Brutal Charge feat if it hits--adding more damage and whatnot. All depends on whether (pole)Axe to the Face works or not on this)

The situation was indeed well in hand, and so much the better. With an almost tangible distance from his power, Gulrd wasn't sure he wanted to rely on the aid of nature.

At least, not yet. And anyway, Lorraine was a bit of a sitting duck.

(If she hasn't freed herself by his turn, Gulrd will grab a bladed weapon (Lorraine's, if it looks like he can get at it without entangling himself, or ask to bum one off Lux if it looks like he can't.) and try to cut the webs around Lorraine and Aaron. If she has gotten free, another bowshot to Spider 2.)

Mines of Marsellin

Failing to rip the webs off of herself, Lorraine tries to squeeze through them; this ends up about as successful, only resulting in her getting even more tangled up. Aaron does just about as well, barely able to move now, as wrapped up in the adhesive fibers as he is.

Vance and Zant hold their weapons, moving towards their foes to strike. Vance dashes at the still-immobile spider, stabbing his polearm in and through its body, leaving it twitching on the shaft of his weapon as some of the once-adhering shadow retreats from beneath it out of sight. Meanwhile, Zant reaches the more distant spider and strikes it just as solidly, crushing the spider under the weight of his warhammer with a crunch of exoskeleton and the ring of stone against iron, its legs curling beneath it as the hammer's pulled back.

Gulrd moves ahead, borrowing Lux's rapier to cut away the webs from around Lorraine. With the two of them working at it, she's soon freed, if still having a few scraps of web clinging to her. Aaron gets freed as well once the worst of the webs are cut off and pulled away, and begins grooming his feathers and shaking himself out, if not entirely successfully.

Lorraine tries to escape, fails her Escape Artist check. Vance charges at Spider1, hitting for 14 damage. Zant moves ahead and hits Spider2 for 7 damage. Gulrd borrows Lux's rapier and cuts the webbing free of Lorraine.

Combat is over!

After noting that the other spider had been crushed by Zant's hammer, Vance immediately did what he felt was most important; getting the bloody thing off of his weapon.

And so, the party is thusly treated to an image of Vance cursing while trying to get the spider carcass off of his weapon with his boot before cleaning off the blade.

Zant would have found Vance's antics amusing if he wasn't too busy contemplating what had just transpired. It wasn't the first time he had killed an animal, but he couldn't shake the feeling that they were interlopers here. Then again, the presence of the amulet and the two creatures lurking in waiting suggested an ambush.

He shook his head, pushing the pointless philosophising to the back of his mind as he cleaned his own weapon. They'd attacked and, quite appropriately, they'd been destroyed with crushing force before he or the party could be hurt. Though the thought of more of these creatures lurking elsewhere in the tunnels put him ill at ease.

"A thankfully painless encounter. Though perhaps we should retrieve Shawn before she finds herself similarly surprised."

Mines of Marsellin

As Zant lifts his hammer and Vance kicks the carcass off his polearm (with limited success, getting a nice quantity of ichor all over his boot; his polearm might be good going in, but coming out doesn't seem half as easy), the coloration of the spiders begins to fade, no longer resembling the walls of the tunnels. Quite to the contrary, they stand out quite well now, with sickly-yellow hides splotched with markings of red. It quite frankly looks appalling and even a little nauseating, even for the corpses of spiders.

Zant:
Spoiler:
That magic-but-not you saw about them before fades along with the camouflaging coloration. The trinket that Lorraine still holds, however, is keeping its aura.

Ah yes. That thing.

Zant turned his attention to the amulet, trying to discern as much about its nature as blessing would allow him too.

(Focusing on the amulet's aura and gunning for details.)

Zant:
Spoiler:
Zant can see nothing about the amulet beyond the basic fact that there is some kind of aura about it. The fact that it isn't exactly magic is putting it beyond his knowledge.

Lorraine wasn't speaking much now. She continued to wipe webbing off of herself, feeling thoroughly stupid for being tricked that way. When she spots them on him, she'll pick bits of webbing off of Aaron as well.

Mines of Marsellin

Aaron gives a small squawk, nudging Lorraine's face as she picks the bits of webbing off the two. The pair are soon cleaned off as best as Lorraine can manage. She can still feel a thin sticky film on herself and her equipment, and her hair seems to be of a tendancy to clump together right now, but she's as clean as she can manage and no permanent harm seems to be done to her possessions from the adhesive substance.

Vance, on the other hand, is less lucky. Though he finally succeeds in getting the corpse of the yellow spider off his polearm, his boot's pretty well stained, a deep olive splatter all over his foot from the now-fairly-dry carcass. Luckily, the scent's all but undetectable, but it'll need a good hard scrubbing before even beginning to resemble normal leather again.

Lorraine:
Spoiler:
Lorraine shouldn't feel stupid, that makes Aaron sad. And they aren't hurt, so things are good!

She seems to cheer a little, stroking the back of Aaron's head lightly. ... Under the circumstances, very lightly. It wouldn't do to accidentally take out a few more feathers.

' Ugh...that's definitely ruined. It'd take me until I'd die of being old to clean that boot off. I'd be better off just buying a new one when I get back. Not like these are any of the fancy shit anyway,' Vance thought while looking down at his stained and nasty boot. Oh well--it had dyed valiantly in the line of duty.

(OOC: I apologize now for the horrible pun)

Looking around, he then looked at the tantalizing piece of jewelry in question; it wasn't the damn amulet they were looking for. Looking to his current comrades, he merely asked the group in a gruff manner; "So? Are we going to go and get the amulet, or the short one, or just fucking stand here for days on end? Let's just do something."

Lorraine looked up.. and nodded. He was right. Moreover, if he of all people was interested in getting back to Shawn, then the time was well past when they ought to have gone and done so.

"Let's move..."

She headed back for the tunnel's entrance.

The group heads back, retracing their steps to reunite with Shawn. They ready themselves for a long walk back, as Shawn split off from their number some time back; ten minutes ago, at least.

Thankfully for the group, however, it's but a short few minutes before they spy Shawn heading back towards them herself. To all appearances, she's in fairly good condition, neither injured nor starting on the process of ferrification. She does look a slight bit out of breath, but besides that, their worries seem to have been unfounded.

"Not that much so, I'll have to say," Vance muttered. "Came across two of those bastards ourselves. Fortunately, nobody actually got hurt. Some of us will have to wash, though..."

Looking back to the blackness on the way they went in, he then asked to nobody in general, "Well, should we start going again? We don't have forever..." before starting to walk inward that way himself, watching out for more of those blasted spiders...

Lux follows on, content with the group's ability. Before they leave the area, however, he does cut away a small portion of skin from one of the spiders, wrapping it carefully in a large piece of parchment before stowing it in a pocket in his coat. He'll be looking at that with interest later.

Mines of Marsellin

A full party once more, the six Planewalkers resume their trip into the tunnel. They make up the lost ground quickly, passing the pair of spiders and pressing forward. Some sort of creature seems to have gotten to one of them - it's ripped pretty well to shreds - but nothing looks to be in the vicinity, nor can they hear any sign of danger, so little stops them from pressing ahead.

The number of piles of detritus looks to be increasing the deeper down the tunnel they travel, though there's yet no sign of the red amulet that marks their goal. They are treated to an interesting sight a few minutes past the spiders, however; a body.

A body long since ferrified, that is. He appears to be a dwarf of some sort, barely holding a curved cutting tool in his hands. A look of horrific realization can be seen across his face, and his head is tilted down as he assumedly watched the process course through his body. His arms and legs are manacled, the restraints engraved with a symbol just barely still identifiable; it resembles a winged serpent, rearing back and ready to strike. This unfortunate dwarf looks to be the single such body in the area, and it shows little sign of weathering, the creases in the clothes still sharp and the detail of the beard still crisp.
