Reading the article proper reveals the movie is about Dragonball, not DBZ. Though they are similar, one has a Z at the end and is also a lot less tolerable.

There already was a loosely-Dragonball based live-action film, I believe, but it could've just been some bootlegged monstrosity.

Reading the article proper reveals that the movie is about Dragonball Z, not Dragonball. See notes about an 'adult Goku who discovers he was sent to Earth to destroy it,' for one.

Which is best visualized as a vicious, lazy, profoundly ignorant, perpetually hungry organism craving the warm god-flesh of the anointed. Personally I like to imagine something the size of a baby hippo, the color of a week-old boiled potato, that lives by itself, in the dark, in a double-wide on the outskirts of Topeka. It's covered with eyes and it sweats constantly. The sweat runs into those eyes and makes them sting. It has no mouth, Laney, no genitals, and can only express its mute extremes of murderous rage and infantile desire by changing the channels on a universal remote. Or by voting in presidential elections."

SHUT UP THE LOT OF YOU I missed the one word 'adult' okay.

Either way I image searched the guy who is supposed to lay Goku and he looks like a total loser so this will be a terrible movie regardless.

People who like DBZ will hate it because it'll be live action with terrible CGI muscles and lazers and the characters will not have magic hair. People who like movies will hate it because it's DBZ. I predict.

Some guy is going to do Goku?

As if this movie wasn't going to be terrible enough...man, I can't wait! I love bad movies so much.

If live action adaptations of anime/manga suck, and if they're going to make a live-action adaptation from original material that sucks, then maybe, just maybe, the movie will suck so bad that it'll flip right around to the other side of the continuum and end up being genius.

Probably not, though. At least the action bits should be good.

The first few bits of DBZ weren't all that bad though, really. It just starts going downhill pretty quick.
Anime is kind of like fish in that it is better the less "fishy" it is.

I maintain that's because they did a direct translation from manga to anime, meaning full-page images of a combatant getting superpissed got converted into a five minute "That's impossible!" sequence.

I'm just hoping they won't take a lesson from the anime and set up a 3-movie deal where it takes that entire length of the three to go through 5 minutes worth of fighting.

And I somehow hit 'edit' on Priam's post and not 'quote'. Good grief.

The guy they have slated to play Piccolo apparently has a black hole in his face, his cheeks are imploding.

I don't know if I'll ever be able to see him as anything but Spike from Buffy. And yes. I watched Buffy back in the day. Perhaps it'll help if he's green.

Hahahahaha! If they actually use that in the movie, it will be the laughablest thing ever.

Man, already, I can tell this movie is going to be a comedy goldmine. Especially since it's being directed by the same guy who did Final Destination 3, which features a number of "great" lines, including: "Fuck you, Ben Franklin!"

I wanna support this movie because Stephen Chow is a genius on all counts, but at the same time...yeah. I don't think it'll do well on merit of the cast and director alone, especially since the budget will probably be too low to even resemble the anime, let alone adapt it.

Silly, silly Hollywood.

I don't think even Mr. Chow will be able to save this mess. He's only producing it, and the director and writer are going to no doubt fuck it up aeons beyond anything he could possibly salvage.

Wait a sec. Why the HELL is Goku going SSJ? If they're even going to SLIGHTLY respect continuity, he won't do that for YEARS after Piccolo is a bad guy. I understand that SSJ In A Movie = Win, but still, DAMN... this is gonna be a worse trainwreck for story than Transformers...

You must not have watched many of the animated DBZ movies. They pretty much fuck continuity in the ass and do whatever the hell they want. :P Most of the 10+ movies they had made for DBZ isn't apart of the main plot. If it is, it's very loosely based.

Why should this one be any different?

The movies often had the cool B-list characters like Yamcha and Yajirobe though.

Chuck, I'd like to point out that is Gohan, not Goku. Why GOHAN is SSJ is also a mystery.

Is that picture even real? It looks more like a cosplayer than a production still. Especially since the movie hasn't even started filming yet.

That was my thought! :D

Is that a several-year-old timestamp on that, too?

Now that that's out of the way, I'm still sure the movie will be horrible at worst and amusing at best, but hell. If Michael Bay can make Transformers halfway decent (shut up, I thought it was pretty well-done), then Stephen Chow's team can make action sequences kick ass. Just watch Kung Fu Hustle and you'll know that he won't stoop for anything less than insanity.

...the story and script, on the other hand? Yeeeeeaaaahhhh...might wanna just skip that part.
