TRUST POTION

Unread postby Kai » Thu Aug 31, 2006 1:55 pm

This was shared in my Science, Technology and Society class. I'm actually still in class, but I didn't want to forget.

Everything on this site is wonderful.

Also, it implies that men need this more. After all, women are inherently trustworthy. No woman in all her days has every deliberately deceived another human being. We don't need this, but you menfolk take note. <p>-------------------------

I wonder who's bright idea it was to spray mind-altering chemicals all over your body. <p>

I have a cunning plan. It involves getting someone to spray this stuff all over their body. It also involves my having a cold. <p>-----

Well, of course women don't need it. Women already have men generally wrapped around whatever appendage they choose. Act like you're scared, and fifty men will jump to protect you. Act like you're wronged, and fifty more will look to avenge you, or at least quest to correct the wrong.

On the other hand. A man complains? Fucking walk it off, pussy. <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. Also, it seems from the site's descriptions, it may cause women to lactate, possibly abundantly.

Hell, it may cause men to lactate, now that I think about it.

I love how the site is like "Man, people will be fawning all over you, you will be a god among men" and then in the FAQ section, where it gets to the question about whether it's okay, morally speaking, to influence people like that it's all like "Oh, yeah, don't use it for anything wrong. Be responsible, and all that." and jumps right back into "You can close more deals, get more head, and be that guy who you always wanted to be who kicked your ass in middle school!" <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. Dear Priam:

No.

Here, I am a woman. I guarantee you, it doesn't work like that. The only way to get people to want to protect you or avenge you is if: [1] they care about you (friends, family), or [2] they want something from you.

When I broke down crying in the airport I worked in (due to a miscommunication with my transportation), no one jumped to protect me or looked to avenge me--no one so much as talked to me, or looked at me. For half an hour upwards to an hour.

When I was walking to a doctor's appointment in the rain, sans umbrella (I'd lost the one I'd previously owned) some guy ran up to me and started...well, hitting on me. Rather creepily. Because obviously, if a woman's walking in the rain, it must be because her man kicked her out--otherwise he'd have the decency to drive her to where she needed to go. So she wouldn't have to get wet, which is the worst thing in the world. This person was, obviously, very concerned about me, and sought to "protect" and "avenge" me by asking personal details about my dating life and wanting to fill in the void in my life.

There's two typical examples that stand out in my mind. The first is typical of my childhood and first half of my adult life. The latter, more for the latter half of my adult life. I'd chalk the differences up to age and geographical/cultural differences.

What you are describing isn't the typical woman's ability/advantage--you're describing manipulation, and it doesn't happen without a manipulative person. It's kinda creepy you equate womankind with manipulation, for that matter.

I've seen men get the "you're not a woman, so suck it up treatment"--but that doesn't necessarily mean women get told "well, you're a woman, so go ahead." If we did, do you think we'd accept something so blatantly sexist? Men get lame reasons why not to do something, women just get other reasons. <p>

Okay, that's fair. On one counter, men will never *tell* you that you are weak because you are female. There are those who will think it though, sometimes pretty loudly. And many men are pretty hesitant to talk to a crying woman, even one they know.

But yeah, men who don't already know you to some extent aren't predisposed to generally do anything except in cases where they are looking for something. The situation I was envisioning (which I will admit is entirely because it is the most familiar at-large social situation to me, via work) is kind of a bar type setting, where a large number of the people know eachother and are on friendly terms even if they are not technically friends. In which case we have breached into the 'care about' criterion.

Biases, generalizations, faulty assumptions, and beef. *nod* <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. It's funny that Priam mentions lactation, because oxytocin is also responsible for inducing contractions and labor in women near term. In fact, a synthetic analogue of oxytocin is sometimes used to induce labor.

It's a hormone that does a hell of a lot more than just cause people to like you, that's for certain, and the bit that I found most amusing is that oxytocin doesn't typically cross the blood-brain-barrier when it's being released by your own body; that means that it can't "enter your central nervous system." However, I did read that inhaled oxytocin was capable of penetrating the BBB (somehow, I have no idea how that's possible). <p>
