Why being liberal at a conservative school is fun.

Unread postby Evil Killer Poptarts » Mon Feb 27, 2006 8:39 pm

I'm gonna give this a pre-emptive "POSSIBLY POLITICAL DISCUSSION" warning, and if it isn't supposed to be in here, feel free to move it. I wasn't sure but this seemed like the best place to put it, so long as the discussion stays clean.

This semester, I have this awesome class called "Minority Group Relations." This class consists of reading a book (one or two chapters are due per class period) and then discussing those chapters in class. There are no tests, no quizzes; once per book you write a page summary and the discussion questions for the day you present, and once per book you put together a project about some theme you liked. This class is AWESOME.

We are currently reading the autobiography of Malcolm X. Mind you, I go to a conservative Christian university, and dear Malcolm was a radical Muslim, so obviously opinions clash. Add to this the fact that I am quite liberal in comparison with my highly conservative classmates, and you can probably see how this is a potentially explosive situation.

Today, we were discussing whether or not history books have been "bleached" (i.e. only dead white guys are discussed), as Malcolm claimed.

Me: Heck yes they have been! It consists of dead white guys! What about the things women have done? Or minorities?

A FEMALE Classmate Who Shall Remain Anonymous: If women or minorities had actually done anything important, they WOULD be in the history books.

Me: *thinking* Oh, you are going DOWN.

I then proceeded to push every button I could think of, including bashing President Bush (whom most people on campus think is a saint) and the Iraq war, which I am strongly opposed to but most of my classmates see it as a holy war. I called it Bush's Crusades. That did not go over so well...

At one point, She Who Shall Not Be Named was so mad, she was turning red and SHAKING. Other classmates were yelling, the tension was so thick it was electrifying. My professor had long since facepalmed and sank into his chair, wondering why he didn't just duct-tape my mouth shut at the start, I'm sure. (He loves a good <s>fight</s> debate, though, so he didn't stop me.) One girl actually started CRYING and accusing me of bashing the troops (one of whom is my baby brother.)

Me: How is bashing President Bush bashing the troops?

She Who Shall Not Be Named: He's the commander-in-chief! You're bashing the whole system!

Me: If I said "Wendy's is a corrupt corporation," would that mean I'm bashing the cashiers? NO! I will NEVER bash the troops; my brother is in the Military Police, and I come from a LONG line of military guys. The troops are doing what they're told to do, why the heck would I hold that against them?

She Who Shall Not Be Named shut up about it after that and went after another one of my points.

Needless to say, dear friends, today I sowed CHAOS. It was BEAUTIFUL. <p><div style="text-align:center">Image</div></p>

Ironic how there are Christians attending liberal schools who do the exact same thing you do, but for Jesus.

And thank you for not bashing Wendy's cashiers. We are a proud and hardy bunch, enduring the idiocy and venom of customers every day, and yet still doling out quality food.

But where's OUR parade? ;_; <p>

I dunno. I use Wendy's all the time because I <s>slaved</s> worked there for five and a half years. We need to have Wendy's parades.

And yes, trolling is always SUCH fun when you're a minority. And the best part is? I got labeled a communist, fascist, and other such things. All because I said "I don't like George W. Bush." Mwehehe.

I'm going to have shirts made that say "Being Liberal Does Not Make Me The Anti-Christ". <p><div style="text-align:center">Image</div></p>

As a semi-conservative Christian, who supports our troops and LOVES Wendy's to death (nice food, good service I've gotten so far), I applaud EKP. I furthermore cheer at the idea of this behaviour continueing:

If those people are never forced to think, they're just going to grow up being zombie slaves of the straight party ticket culture that's so prolific today.

Onoes, You're a liberal! You must be evil and kill babies and smoke pot and are secretly a communist! Hippie!

Onoes, You're a conservative! You must be evil and bash in baby seal heads and play catch with nukes and secretly want to parade forigeners around naked while bashing in their teeth with your boot! Thick headed bastard!

... What the fuck, man. :{ They'll hate you for it, but you're helping those people. Atleast a little. <p>

Amen!

In all honesty, I'm an independent centrist. It's just that this school is SO conservative, that being centrist makes me liberal.

Also, me being a feminist makes me a lesbian, and me not wanting to have babies makes me a child-hater. Sadly, I'm not making this up- those are things people have said about me on this campus. -_-;;; <p><div style="text-align:center">Image</div></p>

I, however, am sad. These people, enveloped in rage, will come to understand nothing. The door to knowledge must be opened slowly. Maybe then they can become decent fucking human beings.

I presume we are talking about high school, and not collegiate-level? If this is college, then I weep. Oh, how I weep. My weeping, it is mighty. But high school...high school is a place for people to clash and hate eachother unilaterally. It is the natural order of things, there. Only when they move out of Mommy and Daddy's house do people come to realize that some things really aren't so bad, or black-and-white, depending, after all.

I advocate Soratic dialogue. Questioning is better than shouting, and one-on-one is a better method to get one person to truly involve their own beliefs. You, yourself, may be bettered by this, too, but be aware--if this undertaking is...undertaken...then you may find yourself doing a bit of research. FOR SCIENCE! <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. Now, if I were Bob, I would come riding in there on a tank, armed to the teeth with Captain America paraphenalia, and level the place to the ground.

Unfortunately, I am Fatmus, and thus can only offer to classify the offending staff members as 'mathbooks.' <p>

Don't worry, there are enough of us "subversive influences" to do plenty of damage.

One project I've always wanted to do is print out copies of "Nemesis Calling" and leave them anonymously about the student center. I will be the Smutfic Ninja!

(I wouldn't advise reading Nemesis Calling unless you desire ocular bleeding. It's insanely well-written, but oh my, it's a difficult read, since it details hardcore Beast Wars crab-on-manta ray action. I've only read it because I am friends with the author, who insists on everyone reading it at least once.) <p><div style="text-align:center">Image</div></p>Edited by: Evil Killer Poptarts at: 2/28/06 2:53

Hey now, I read it and I didn't bleed from the eyes!

Though it was a near thing.

On the other hand, I would be sorely tempted to through with that little project idea, but I will never have a solid reason to show up on IWU campus.

Damn. <p>

Perhaps the week of exams, when they can't kick me out for doing it!

My only dilemma is, everyone knows I'm the resident Transformers fan on campus. Someone would trace it back to me, unfortunately. So I'll have to be doubly sneaky.

Maybe I should just print out Harry Potter smutfic, just to see people go into epileptic convulsions from both the magic AND the smut. >: D <p><div style="text-align:center">Image</div></p>

Indiana Wesleyan University?

*shudder* My mother wanted to send me there. I am extremely glad I did not go.

Oh, and how do the history books look in other countries? But wait--I can't forget that's different, because in the U.S., we're honest.

But yeah, looks like you must have had fun. I must admit to leaning a bit more toward Priam's viewpoint, as for the actual effectiveness of your arguments. I'm guessing, though, that you weren't going for that so much as taking it out against the student body in general.

Yeah, I'd already brought that up, and got hit with the "But we're AMERICANS, we're FROM Europe" argument, which just made me want to hit my head on something for a while. Nevermind just how many people in the US are NOT of European descent. (Granted, I am, but I get criticized for being German and therefore a Nazi around here, so whatever.)

I was all like, "But dude, we're a melting pot. We've got people from absolutely EVERYWHERE."

"YES BUT MOSTLY EUROPE."

So obviously, our minorites don't matter. YAY!

After doing that dance all semester, I was fed up and felt like exploding and being a total twit, and I had a great time doing so. Yes, but if they didn't break Godwin's law, the paint would melt off the walls and the windows would shatter and all the paintings would become Lovecraftian horrors out of horror and revulsion at the student body's left wing nature.

Or something. :o <p>

The history books IWU is using must be 30 years old, or something. The history books at my university were packed full of all the aspects of American history (INCLUDING the womens and the minorities).
