My computer feels cold and clammy...

Unread postby Besyanteo » Fri Jan 21, 2005 9:27 am

... probably because it has a virus. :{

My anti-virus software, naturally, can see it, but can't do anything to fix it.

Any suggestions before I just format the hard drive?

Which virus. Why can't your antivirus do anything about it. Why is the sky blue. <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. Run your antivirus software in safe mode. If a virus can't be changed by Norton or McAfee while you run the computer normally, it's probably because it's using a certain system resource that is unchangable in normal mode. If you run it in safe mode, most system resources and processes are deactivated and it's a lot easier to clean up viruses. <p>

Priam: Trojan.byteverify. Belatedly discovered it's in a zip file. I could explain about the sky, but it wold take several paragraphs and a few earth science references I don't care to look up. It basically boils down to sayying that blue is the spectrum of light that is most prevalent in our particular atmosphere mixture and layering. Fun fact! The spectrum of light most easily seen by mankind is green!

Phil: Belatedly discovered the virus was in a zip, which was brought onto the computer by IE. It's part of a java console that installs itself onto your browser. Acorrding to Norton, it does several things: It randomly adds a bunch of porn site links to your favorites, and sets up a dialer program to contact other people with this trojan and it shares various bits of informaiton with them.

I have no fuckign clue. Anyway: Removed the offending files, ran ad-aware and destroyed their active processes, etc etc. Norton now finds no problems. My files are no longer in danger of being killed. :o

This is the very reason I stopped using IE. My old computer kept contracting viruses left and right because I used IE. (course, my own stupidity helped alot there!)
God I love Firefox. <p><div style="text-align:center">

Actually, I had that same virus recently, and I haven't used IE for browsing in quite some time. Just to warn those of you that are the same. <p>

Idran is right: We don't use IE anymore on that machine. You can contract the virus with anything, it's just that it targets your IE. Since IE is also part of your file-browsing system for your local disks, it's not like you can up and remove it.

It also access your IE browser independant of you, which is mroe noticeable than you'd think. It makes a link clicking noise every time it does this. In my case, my firewall also notifies me (every freaking time) that IE is preparing to access the intarweb.

HOW DO YOU GET EET?! ... No clue. o.o

IE? This is the reason that I stopped using Windows. Let's see that Trojan attack OSX. :D <p>

Gar. I've intended to get a Linux machine going for some time. ... But it always seems to deteriorate over time, before eventually just totally dying on me. I've lost a hard disk to Mandrake. :{

Okay, either FD needs to quit stealing my lines, or I just need to quit thinking like him, one of the two.

Still, good to hear you got that infection cleared up Bes.
