Elemaer: Of Spaces Below (Closed Freestyle RP)

Unread postby Spleen » Sat Mar 25, 2006 11:23 pm

The carts arrived after two and a half weeks of journeying over the countryside of Azurin, the westernmost continent in Elemaer, the most important because of the presence of the Great City of As'nar, the starting-point of the mining expedition. The carts were loaded with six months' supplies for the three-month expedition, the strange reports and stranger rumors that surrounded this particular mine outweighing (in some small part) the pragmatic conservation that the Order of Earth routinely indulged in, a conservation that was heightened by the Order's financial state as of late.

Those on the carts set immediately to unloading them, with others hurrying out of the squat wooden buildings that served as the miners' home away from home to help. These current residents were obviously relieved to be leaving, especially those who weren't initiated members of the Order of Earth and thus were working on pay alone. The Order had taken a gamble in making sure that this fresh expedition that had just come in had none of these, everyone on the mission being an initiated member of the Order of Earth (except in the case of the single Trixeran specialist on mine draining, Condras Vinsenz D'irejon; the lack of one had been proving irritating, as a botched draining had almost stopped all work on the mine a month prior). Most of these were overaged and underranked, drawn from the bottom quarter of both the Order's traditional hierarchy (which pushed even the dregs along the ranks every so often) and the real hierarchy of merit that went beyond rank. A few, though, were properly in the Order's favor and sent as the replacements for the initiated Verites that were leaving for home - in fact, they would more than replace these, as the overseers that were leaving ranked only up to a single Er'kiir, and the newcomers boasted two of these and a lofty Daiam besides, along with two adept Terenars and the aforementioned Condras of the Order of Water.

Speaking of the Er'kiirs, Draea was unpacking her equipment and personal effects from the lead cart with a look on her face like she did not want to be bothered by anybody. She hoisted the largest of her bags, big and black and heavy with weapons and armor, over her back, and hauled another of slightly less mass off the cart and took it in her left hand. All told, her load looked to be a good half of her weight, maybe more, but she carried it with relative ease as she headed for one of the bunkhouses, tossing her silky blond hair out of her eyes as she did so.

"Are you sure that wheel's not loose?"

Meanwhile, D'iregon approaches the base camp, somewhat eager to begin work on this intriguing project, but more eager for this excruciating journey to end. He's dressed immaculately with an embroidered work smock over his leather; so spic and span that if it weren't for the wear one would swear it was new.

"Because I can feel a definite wobble. I can check it again for you, it won't take but a minute."

"I'm sure it's fine, D'iregon," says the eldest member of the group, a small and thin old lady in a plain brown dress. She does give him something of a look from the corner of her eye while speaking.

She walks onward toward the camp while keeping a steady and even pace; it doesn't seem that age has affected her too much in that regard, though she could be a tad faster. She also seems to be leaning on an old rod made of laquered black wood.

"We'll worry about little things like that later. Right now, let's just present ourselves and hope they had the sense to get a good meal ready for us." She looks ahead, "Draea! Be a dear and get my things when your done with yours!"

Draea stopped in her tracks in the doorway of the bunkhouse. Lazy old bag, she thought, gritting her teeth. "Yes, Daiam Sorasi," she called, not turning so her mother wouldn't see her scowl. "Right away."

(OOC: OH YEAH. I keep forgetting to put this in Elemaer info, but just so those of you know who don't already know, last names are very rarely used unless someone's being formal or vaguely insulting. Thus it's Daiam Sorasi, not Daiam Elgath, and probably Vinsenz, not D'iregon.)

After quietly unloading a few bags from the wagon she had arrived on, Siorena immediately set out toward a bunkhouse with them. The course she followed took her near enough to the Daiam, the other Er'Kiir, and the Trixerite for her to casually regard them for a moment as she passed. She then continued on into the bunkhouse, set her luggage down, and stepped back outside.

(OOC: Ah, since I didn't realize there would be other PCs using the same intro as me, a note to Pervy and anyone else that decides to use the same cart as Vinsenz: This is by no means the first time he's convinced or tried to convince the driver to pull the cart over so he can check the wheels. More like the 12th. At least.)

"No, don't worry, it'll only take a min...there, right there! That there was a wobble, I felt it."

He turns to the driver.

"You cannot tell me you didn't feel that."

Vinsenz was grating heavily on the driver's nerves, and the beleaguered old man whispered under his breath, asking what he did to the gods to deserve this sort of treatment. Fortunately, they were there, they were parked in front of the bunkhouse, and the irritating man would be out of his life forever after they had eaten dinner and the driver was back on his way with others. The driver spoke, trying to keep his voice as even as humanly possible. "We checked the wheel already, sir. I'm sure it'll be at least okay until I get back to As'nar, at which time I will definitely get it replaced, or at least thoroughly checked. Now, if you please, get your things out of the cart so the men returning to the City can pack up for the return trip."

Meanwhile, Draea had claimed a bed in the bunkhouse and was finished bringing her stuff in. Still scowling, the warrior crossed the yard with quick, angry strides, snatched up two of her mother's bags, and spun away, not saying a word to Vinsenz or the cart driver or even seeming to notice them, caught up as she was in her hatred of this place, this mission, and her stupid, cowardly, blind old mother.

The driver watched her go, whistling softly as she left hearing range. "That girl's a looker, no doubt about that," he mumbled. "But she looks like she's about to kill someone."

"Hmm? Oh...oh, we're here! Yes, of course."

He turns back, grabbing his carefully stored pack and suitcase, before turning to the driver again.

"Are you positive you don't want me to check it for you? Loose wheels can be quite dangerous, after all."

"No offense or nothin'..." said a deep voice from behind D'irejon, "but if you bug 'im anymore, he's more likely to take those fancy tools to your head."

The interruptor was a young man with light brown and dark hair, who was tall and thickly built; that's not unexpected from a member of the Order of Earth. However, other than that, he didn't look much like a member. His dress seemed more appropiate for a sailor than a holy man, with its stained trousers and ripped shirt. If it wasn't for the hammer strapped across his back and the holy symbol dangling from a chain around his neck, he wouldn't be too indistuingashable from one of the men working for pay.

After he said what he had to say, he flashed a bright grin at the man and said, "I don't mean any trouble, but just relax, eh?"

Startled slightly by the voice from behind him, he turns as the man speaks. He seems to be a bit confused as he finishes talking, though.

"...But I am relaxed."

The young man scratched the back of his head with his free hand, and replied, "But you seem kinda worried, almost like ya scared of somethin'. Why else would ya be so worried 'bout the wagon?"

"Worried? Oh...no, no, I'm just concerned. Like I said, it's not very safe to ride in a wagon with loose wheels."

He turns back to the driver before continuing.

"Though if you want to tempt fate like that, that's up to you."

"I'm a wild man, what can I say?" the driver deadpanned. He glanced over to Draea, who was stalking back to grab the rest of Sorasi's belongings and thus the last of the luggage in the cart. "That it?" the driver asked.

"Yeah," Draea said, barely even glancing at the man as she answered him.

The young man shrugged, and was about to hoist up another bag, until he noticed that the woman had grabbed the last of it. You've gotta stop spacing out like that... he thought to himself, before brushing it off.

"So," he said, with another grin, "How're the other carts holding up?"

Meanwhile, Siorena had picked up a second load from her own cart and was carrying it inside. She hadn't been paying much attention to anyone else so far since the process of unloading the wagons was something she had engaged in countless times and seemed fairly routine to her. For now, she just wanted to get all of her baggage off the wagon so that it could leave. Later, she planned on taking the work tools she had brought to the workshop and inspecting the facility to see how well-equipped and maintained it was.

Hoisting his items, Vinsenz heads off as the young man speaks with the wagon driver, sparing a glance back at the cart before heading to the cabins. He soon arrives, and begins glancing between them. He starts to head for one, but pauses, considering. Looking around and taking in the surroundings, he starts again for another before once again stopping. He frowns as he looks between them, finally heading to an unoccupied one near the outer edge.

The commander of the previous mission came out of one of the tents, and found Sorasi easily enough. "Ah, you must be the new commander. My name is Er'kiir Thogan Minosar. How do you do, ma'am?" He held out his hand to shake Sorasi's.

Siorena had finished unloading. She was now back in the yard again and preparing to help with another wagon when she happened to come across the young man with a sailor-like appearance standing near them. As ties between team members had been fairly important in her experience, she decided to stop and engage this one.

"Hey," she said, hoping to get his attention. "Avedis, right? Care for any help unpacking?"

She gives his hand a critical look, then takes it and gives a rather frail shake. "I'm hungry and tired, in about that order. Why don't you show us to dinner, while telling us a bit more about the problem?"

(OOC: Well, you could have gotten to it at a later time. After all, I waited eleven days, I could have waited a couple hours. Thanks, anyway.)

"Of course! Of course. Right this way, Daiam. And the rest of you! Dinner is this way, follow me."

Er'kiir Thogan was a round, nervous, and tidy little man. Though probably thirty or nearly so, a nearly palpable aura of twitchy, compulsive action made him seem more like a bizarre cross between a six-year-old boy and a clucking old grandmother than an experienced mine foreman in his youthful prime.

Dinner was served in one of the main buildings and was laid out in ample supply for everyone present, which meant that it was, by necessity, a massive affair. Whatever foodstuffs could be scrounged together were served, and that included animals that the previous mission hunted the day before specifically for this dinner in the knowledge that there was no conceivable way that they could stretch the old supply to cover the huge number of mouths that would need to be fed that night. The next meals would be drawn from the supply of the new mission, and have to feed only the new mission, and hopefully this wouldn't be repeated until the end of the new mission. The dinner was slightly bizarre, and not only because of the foods present (Draea, personally, had never had braised venison with a side of emergency dry vitamin rations). Half of those present - and the halves were not easily distinguished by appearance of placement - were apprehensive at arriving at the ill-omened mine, and the other half were ecstatic to leave it.

Sorasi takes to the curious meal well enough. She didn't seem unhappy with it, although it doesn't seem she is such a big eater.

"So tell me," she says to Thogan, "What's been going on here?"

However her interaction with Avedis had gone, Siorena was now in the dinner room. She was used to the type of food that had been served, so she had no complaints about it. She hadn't necessarily eaten every type of food present at the same time very often, but she had consumed enough of each food individually. The matter of most concern to her at the moment was the reputation that the mine had earned.
