Chien Hou gave a mocking laugh, and an inscrutable smile.

"Hope? There is always hope, no matter the country, even in one of the barbaric lands across the sea. The question is whether it's counterbalanced by despair."

Mao, Jia Li, and the drummer arrived abuot then, and Chien Hou gave a nod to each of them. Mao glided to Fu's side, and he dropped an arm about her shoulders, giving a slight squeeze before releasing her.

"Ch'ou? Time?" asked Chien Hou, attention upon the brawny peasant.

"Quite soon," he replied in a thick, rural accent, tugging his braid lightly.

The crowd of Chinese was starting to be more subdued, and those with a good sense of time could tell that very soon, the hour of the Rat would be beginning— eleven o'clock by Western time, and the moonless night seemed like the perfect canvas for the fireworks that would burst after the gongs rang. All vendors with noisemakers of various sorts had them poised for clamoring in with the gongs.

Finally, it was silent for a few brief moments before the gongs would be ringing. Chien Hou glanced skywards, and then Mao did as well. Jia Li (and Mu-Li, drunk though he was), noticed a tear forming at the corner of the sword dancer's eye, but her swarthy cousin brushed it away gently, causing her to blink slightly in surprise, as though she hadn't even been aware of the drop.

...and the silence continued.

Ch'ou shifted his shoulders, glancing up, then pressed his palms together as if in supplication. Fu's gaze followed the drummers, eyes narrowing as if in a glare to the heavens...

And the silence continued.

Finally, a confused babble broke out among the people. Why were the gongs silent? Was there something wrong in the temples? Whatever it was, it seemed an ill omen.

Chien Hou then smirked slightly. Rather than seeming alarmed, he seemed.... amused.

"Certainly something to look into," he yawned, eyes giving a malicious sparkle.

Fu's glare turned from the sky to Hou, and a deep, guttural growl could be heard from his throat before Ch'ou gave him a worried look.

"Children, time to come along to the temples," Chien Hou continued, beaming for all the world like some plump, benign Kitchen God. The flippant, condescending remark seemed primarily aimed at Ch'ou and Fu, though he gave a gracious nod of his head to Mao and Jia Li. "Something interesting, hey? Gives a most exciting start to the year. Oh, and someone fetch the bedraggled man who thinks he's a mystic— he could be useful."

With that, he turned, slipping into the crowd as though assuming the others would automatically follow.

Fu parted from Mao, but only enough to squeeze Jia Li's shoulder. He lowered his head, and spoke in a murmur.

"....please, come. There is something I— need, to talk to you about."

Lo Pan looked to the sky, quite curious at the procedings and lack thereof. While he had never been to Peking, he had hear more than enough stories about how there was supposed to be fireworks during the Hour of the Rat. He was fairly certain it was about that time.

Noting that people were starting to wander about again, Lo Pan decides it is best to do so himself. Lazily standing with the aid of his walking stick, then adjusting his hat, Lo Pan picks a direction and heads that way.

The fact it is the same direction that Chien Hou picked; though some paces behind him; is entirely a coincidence.

Probably.

Lawrence glared at the elderly man as he left, then decided he wasn't quite done yet. Following, he waited for a chance to get another quip in, as to prove himself the victor of the confrontation via words, rather than barbaric methods like fist fighting.

Addled as his wits were, Mu-Li was beginning to see that something was out of place, and something more than just a little dispute over a collision in the street at that. The fireworks had not been lit off, and, he knew, that meant that the demons would not be warded off this night. Not good- it could lead to all sorts of illnesses, thus requiring him to work tomorrow. Most likely, he would be in no shape to work tomorrow. Thus, the best thing to do would be to find out why there were no fireworks tonight, and remedy the situation.

Should be a simple thing, he thought, with the confidence of a drunkard. And thus he wound up moving in the general direction of the others headed towards the temple (although not in a particularly straight line...)

Fu gave a brief smile at Jia Li— one which seemed somehow incongruous on his features, and slightly feral, but a grateful smile none the less.

Odd, considering that she couldn't remember him smiling much at all during the brief time she had spent with him and the others on the way to Peking.

* * *

Ch'ou looked about, broad features puzzled as his brows furrowed. He couldn't find the man that Chien Hou had directed them to get, and gave a philosophic shrug before he assisted Mu-Li in walking.

Jun had avoided getting involved with the fight-it was none of her concern what trouble the foreigner had gotten herself into. She was more concerned about finding a way to replace the dish...she barely managed to scrape together enough wages for the night to enjoy a small dish or a trinket, but maybe-just maybe-she would be able to pick up a replacement...

...however, these petty concerns faded away as she noticed the people speaking about the gongs, murmering rumors about ill luck and bad omens for the year to come.

She bit her lip, pondering this new turn of events. This was not good...not good at all.

The bowl could wait until later-this was a far more pressing concern. Curious about the current goings on, Jun begins to hurry towards the temple, hoping that someone there would be more knowledgable.

Those following Chien Hou found that they were going through a large flux of traffic towards the temple district, making things rather like trying to swim upstream, but Ch'ou's sheer bulk as he helped the way made it much easier. They passed painted brick walls, and as Hou took them to one of the major, undesignated temples— it was open for all deities— they saw a large red phoenix painted on the side of a wall, its feathers trailing with yellow and orange, and walking along towards the beak brought them to the gate.

Again, it was far too crowded for anything real to be seen of the grounds, but there were a small gaggle of frenzied priests in red robes, and again, Chien Hou took over, using his elbows with superb disregard for others to make his way to them. A wayward glance, and he spotted L Pan, imperiously waving the man over. A rapid spate of fluent Mandarin was heard, Chien Hou apparently trying to use his appearance and some fast talk to get them a smooth-faced young priest to take them towards the tower that housed the gongs of that particular temple. He also seemed as though he'd be rather irate if he were interrupted.

* * *

Lawrence, meanwhile, was discovering that try as he might to avoid being pushed, touched, or shoved, he simply couldn't help not being a bit crushed in the mass of humanity, even though he managed to trail Chien Hou.

* * *

Poor Jun was also discovering the difficulty in going towards the temple district. As she was knocked into the wall near the tail of the painted phoenix, she could spot a small black rat crawling over her foot. Icky.

Noticing that he was gestured towards, Lo Pan works to make his way toward Chien. He lets his walking stick find the small spots between the crowd, then uses it to wedge his way through. He can't help but ponder how the priests much be panicking, as well. Though they don't follow the tao, they are trying their best to serve the will of Heaven, so they deserve a little credit, at least.

Jun rubbed the side of her head a bit, trying to soothe it from the minor bump against the brick she just recieved. Then she saw...the rat.

Clenching her teeth, she tried to supress the natural reaction known to some as, "Ew ew ew GETITOFFAME!", and attempted to keep her foot as still as possible. After all, if she tried to kick it, it might get spooked, and spooked animals have a tendency to bite things near them (which is never really pleasant for either party).

Mu-Li, who had been relying on Ch'ou's aid all this time, now found himself in a standstill as the giant's mysterious companion argued with some priest. Soberiety does not come quickly, however things were beginning to work a little bit more smoothly inside the doctor's addled head (after all, it had been almost an hour since he last had a drink...)

Thus, he was almost borderline intelligible as he nudged Ch'ou in the side and asked, "Whas'sa problem?"

Lawrence took to dodging the crowds as well as possible while following. Every once in awhile, a word in his native tongue would slip, untill...

"You all need to STOP TOUCHING ME! Ignorant brutes! These clothes will never be clean of your barbaric touch!"

...It was probably pretty safe to say that he was begining to lose his temper.

Ch'ou glanced down.

"Ah, Chien Hou is going to be doing a bit of checking on the gongs... See if there are any other things amiss."

Shifting his weight, the drummer glanced at Chien Hou, who was still talking, now making a few imperious hand gestures as he went through a series of slights upon the hapless priest before finally flicking out a gold-splattered fan from a sleeve of his robe, snapping it open and flipping it over to show to the priest.

"...don't suppose it would hurt to take you in," Ch'ou sighed, obviously a bit uneasy about the idea of leaving a drunk man on his own to potentially harass or be harassed. "Are you staying at an inn?"

At that point, Chien Hou appeared to be having an effect, as the priest bowed hastily and called for a yellow-sashed temple official. He was clearly nervous at the group, but took them towards a small tower off to the side of the main building, a miniature pagoda-style building with layered, tiled roofs and an open-sided floor at the top where all the gongs were kept. The stairs were fairly shallow, though winding, so that they had to spiral about quite a bit. At least the shallowness meant that Mu-Li didn't have to lean on Ch'ou too much. Unless Lawrence were to push his way into the party, he was also going to be left behind, as he was quite ignored.

* * *

The rat lingered on Jun's foot, but then glanced up at her, whiskers twitching before it scurried off, going along the wall and sniffing the air before scampering into a small crack.

"Out of town. From a rather small village... I'm just here for Mao," the drummer replied, guiding Mu-Li up the stairway.

Chien Hou glanced back down at them, impatiently urging Mao up. The sword dancer glided up the steps, smooth and light as smoke on the breeze.

Then he noticed Lawrence. He stepped down, then glared at the foreigner.

"Well? What are you doing here?"

The rest of the group, meanwhile, could see the immense metal discs once they reached the top, as well as the glimmering bells, which had a ruddy sheen from the light of red lanterns. The large mallets used to beat the gongs were lying nearby, neat red cords tied into intricate knots about the handles.

Several other priests ware already there, as well as a man wearing rich red trousers and a tunic crawling with four-clawed dragons picked out in silver thread. He wears a flat black cap like Hou's, with two red tassels and two yellows, and colored pearls dangling on the tassels.

Lo Pan had only a vague idea what was going on, at best. He wasn't a temple priest, these fripperies were not for him. He was a follower of the Tao, living in harmony with the land, letting no ambition create strife.

Thus, his reaction was to lean on his staff, and observe. That man with the four-clawed dragons embroidered on his clothing was certainly interesting to watch.

"What business is it of yours whatever we strange 'heathens' decide to do within our temples?" Chien Hou replied frostily, fanning himself with short, fierce strokes. The pendants on his cap swirled and danced in the generated breeze, then he snapped the fan shut.

"I fail to see how it is any of your concern, or even if it were, how you could affect anything. People far stronger and more intelligent than you are already up there."

* * *

Mao drifted to the side of the structure, stroking the painted woodwork of a support beam with one pale hand. Ch'ou glanced at her, then would have started after the dancer except that the officious man with the dragons on his coat noticed them. He seemed nervous, then focused his attention into a small harrumph, as if he had finally found something to focus his attention away from the mystery of the bells.

He wrung his hand, then licked his lips, straightening and speaking with a righteous indignation that belied the nervous twitch of his fingers.

"Who are you, and what entitles you to be up here?"

* * *

Unfortunately for Jun...

Once again, she is knocked aside, though this time she crashes into a short, somewhat hunched figure wearing a brilliant orange hooded cloak that completely covered their body. A masculine grunt could be heard, the first indication of the figure's gender, and then an astonishingly hairy hand catches out at Jun before they both land in an ignominous pile.

Lawrence smirked ever so slightly. Stronger? Yes, some of the brutes were stronger than he. Smarter? Not likely. He was English, the epitome of intelligence. Though he had one ace up his sleeve.

"I have no attachment to your temple, and I'm willing to take notice of things that you moronic brutes may disregard in your idiocy. And, as an Englishman, is it my duty to help primative brutes such as yourself welcome the ideas of the western world- Where better to start than your pathetic temple?"

Chien Hou's eyes narrowed, and he started to speak.

"Be that as it may—"

His eyes glanced skywards, then he inhaled deeply, looking as though he was swallowing a few choice invectives. From the puckering of his mouth, they tasted rather sour.

"Come if you wish then. Too much of a nuisance to chase you off at the moment, and I'm going to be late."

With that, he ascended the stairs in time to catch the trailing end of Mu-Li's advice.

"Festive cheers and congratulations, SOMEONE is finally starting to think instead of—"

"CHIEN HOU!"

That shocked outburst came from the officious man with the cap. Apparently Chien Hou's arrival distracted him from Jia Li's question, as he gaped open-mouthed in a rather fish-like fashion.

"...oh. You," Chien Hou replied off-handedly, seeming bored. "You know who I am then, and so you might as well be good enough to turn jurisdiction over to me—"

"I thought you would have enough sense to stay away after that incident about the mustard mine!"

"....dear me. Must I always be reminded of that tawdry affair?" Chien Hou sighed deeply. "At any rate, you DO know I have a bit of experience in these affairs, and I know how to light firecrackers, so you might as well head on down with the priests. I wish to examine a few things."

Mu-Li noticed that Chien Hou's gaze briefly flicked over the view of the city as he mentioned that.

Jia Li could also smell the tang of the metal on the gongs, but an odd undertone she couldn't quite scent. Fu made his way over to her side.

* * *

"Quite welcome. No harm done?" replied the man. His face was in shadow, but a flash of strong white teeth showed with a grin before he hoisted Jun to her feet, and stood himself. He briskly rubbed his palms together, then tucked his hands inside the sleeves of his robe, checking over Jun.

While the doctor knew how to make them (after all, gunpowder had been a medicine before its anti-demon properties were discoverd by Ah Fun) he knew very little about how to use them to cover such a large area. He decided to follow the firecracker expert around, to see what he did...

The official proceeded to talk again.

"Chien Hou, you are really—"

"Hush. Quite frankly, you are getting on my nerves. Go down and take the gaggle of priests with you," the small man replied in a bored tone. "And remember that your superior might not like hearing of your ventures to the Alley of Four Hundred Forbidden Delights—"

The pearls on the man's cap spun crazily, like drunken dancers swaying to an unheard rhythm, as he spluttered. His complexion changed from pasty white to as ruddy as an eggplant, and he simply gave a brief nod and a dirty look to Chien Hou before beginning to stalk away, clearing off the priests with him.

Chien Hou made a discreet hushing gesture to the others and waited a few moments before hollering

"AND NO LISTENING AT THE KEYHOLES EITHER, YOU SON OF A SLUG!"

There was the sound of a pair of footsteps pitter-pattering down the stairs, and then he gave a smug smile.

"Figured."

Meanwhile, Jia Li could make no sound from the gong, but felt a thin, light sheen of oil on the back of her knuckles.

"Found something?" Fu inquired.

Meanwhile, anybody who was paying attention could see Mao starting to climb up one of the wooden support beams towards the roof, making use of her nimble hands and slight body.

The hooded figure gave Jun another bright smile.

"Afraid not, but there's monkey business afoot. That's my specialty, so of course I'm a bit curious. Do you have any particular interest?"

Chien Hou yawned, then glanced about at the motley gathering about himself.

"...what a bizarre picture we make," he commented idly, before stepping to the edge of the level. There was no railing or other obstacle to prevent a misstep from sending him to the grounds below, but he nevertheless stood a scant inch from the fall.

He sighed, and then murmured something as he saw Mao's foot disappearing out of sight to the roof. Lo Pan could catch only a snatch of it; something about "cycles... before... learn".

"The city really looks no different from above... just shows how most humans generate their own disturbances, I suppose," he said in a louder voice, glancing back.

"The fireworks do need to be set off, though. There were some disturbances I noticed earlier, various signs... can't say I'm too surprised with this. Supernatural forces are at work."

* * *

"Of course nothing's happened! This is the New Year, the new start, and of course the delayal gets people so touched up..." The hooded figure tapped the side of his head lightly.

"Almost a challenge to those who prefer their life all nicely organized, you know. Mm."

He appeared to be sizing up Jun, circling about her briefly before standing back.

"So you're curious about this, eh?"

One instinct warred to keep from being involved. Another. however, wanted to set things right.

"Why is our lovely sky without fireworks? It seems such a waste, and I can hardly make sense of the priests and their reasons."

Chien Hou stepped away from the edge, frowning slightly before he made towards the rolled tubes of the fireworks.

"The year of the Rat is the beginning of a new cycle of the Zodiac, and so as the beginning of the new year helps determine what the rest of the year will be like, any influences or turmoil at the beginning of this new Zodiac cycle will warp the rest of the cycle, for at least the next twelve years. More likely at least sixty, as the elemental cycle of fire, earth, metal, water, and wood come into play.

"Thus, when there are disturbed spirits or supernatural forces at work who wish to alter things, they would strike during this time if they are wise. It takes something of great magnitude though, and quite a bit of patience— though if your life is not confined by a mortal frame, patience is something that you would be more likely to possess."

He unwrapped a roll, sifting the gunpowder between his fingers, then raising it to his nostrils to sniff slightly.

With that, he slipped an arm about Jun's shoulders, beginning a comfortable amble towards a slightly quieter section of street. He had quite a firm grip, though relaxed. If Jun wished to make a protesting squirm though, she could likely do so without too much difficulty.

"Speaking of which, the most lovely views are from higher areas. Gives a better vantage, allows for more to be seen..."

Saying so, he was scanning the wall separating the temple from the street, and tsked slightly.

"You any good at climbing?"
