Run the Race (Closed Freestyle Rad Runner RP)

Niagra Fallen is Celeste Corp's north eastern district, the last of the four to be formed. It is also probably the most problematic. Not only is the terrain rough, and not only did a large fraction of the Desolation's nuclear strikes land in that region, it is also the region that encompasses Lake Michigan, and the troublesome Descendants of Aaron, lead by the Sinclair family.

Oh yes, and every four years, thousands upon thousands of the most reckless, impulsive, dangerous, highly skilled, unorganized people on the continent migrate there and form temporary shanty towns in small, relatively radiation-free "safe zones" that form a large circle around the burnt, chared remains of a place once called Chicago. Celeste Corp long ago gave up trying to enforce any semblence of law and order at these gatherings. After all, the only rules Radiation Runners will accept are those that are placed over them in competitions, namely: whatever you do, do it fast and don't screw up, or be prepared for the pain. These rules can always be seen in Rad Runner society, but nowhere are they more evident than in the activities surrounding and taking place during the competition known as the Grand Run.

And so, as people wander the streets of the almost endless shanty town just beyond Desolate Chicago, they will see people fighting, people showing off, people throwing wild parties, people reading, people training, people gambling, people praying, people just sitting in quiet thought, but everywhere people most decidedly alive and ready to do anything they feel the need to do at any given moment. The people here do not seem depressed by the eternally cloudy skies above them, or the grey-brown landscape around them, but rather they seem to offset all these things by themselves being vibrantly, vitally alive.

The place has a tense, quivering feeling of anticipation. After all... The Grand Run will start in two hours.

(A short intro, for me. Introduce characters and such, please!)

A rather short, though muscular, pale-skinned teenager was striding confidently through a large crowd, his virulent purple and green mohawk making him rather distinctive. An earring fashioned out of a safety pin caught the light, and he brushed a red bandanna wrapped about one arm across his forehead, taking away a slight sheen of sweat. The heavy rings he wore across his fingers also glistened. He had a casual smile, brushing by a man who was offering erotic magazines easily.

"Sorry— my sis would kill me," he called back. Of course, he wasn't sure exactly where Latty was, but he bet she was up to no good. Or plotting something.

Jared was checking his gear, as he did before any race. This race wasn't just any race, though. This was the Grand Run, and even though Jared wasn't allowing himself to show it, he was nervous. His father still held one of the five best times in the history of the Run, and what did he have? Nothing. He'd never won any trophies or been called upon to transmit a truly important message, even though he'd been running for almost two and a half years already.

That was what Jared hoped to change by winning the Grand Run.

"Hey! Look! A Gramps!"
That shout was followed by laughter, but Garand ignored it and walked on. The familiar pain was back, especially so in familiar surroundings.

Almost distinguished looking, and with signs of aging so rare amongst other runners, Fooren Garand walked on in his loose shirt and a suit-like windbreaker that seem to proclaim him as a CC employee. This image was offset by the lack of pants, instead he is wearing pre-Desolation blue Jeans.

And with every step, Garand noticed another landmark, and another jab of non- physical pain. Yet he continues to put one foot in front of the other, showing the quiet determination that he has had for most of his life.

(OOC: Note: In the character description for Garand, his history involves the "No.3 Lakes Radiation Filteration Plant". This is actually at Lake Michigan. His original home still stays the same)

(OOC: Finally have some time + Would rather edit than double-post. Also, another slang: "Rooters" = "People who take root in a place", roughly equals "Non-runners")

"Murderer!!"

A stone narrowly misses Garand's face, and he flinches, looking for his attacker.

"You radiated green mutant SCUM!!" the couple shouted, reaching for more stones. Garand started, he KNEW these 2 people. They were his neighbours, and they has... had 2 children.

As more stones fly through the air, Garand suddenly moved with the speed of a runner, closing the distance between. Reaching out and grabbing the lady's arm, he whispered in a harsh tone: "What what you say around here!!".

The couple immediately understood. The common insults of the desolated world can very easily be applied to the Rad-Runners, and these people are not known to be able to withstand insults easily. Not to mention the loose comarade-ship against "Rooters". If a stone had struck Garand, there would have been a general melee in the clearing.

But the wife still struggled, almost speechless for words. However, she stopped when Garand whispered again, this time with compassion showing on his face. "I am very sorry. Truely, I am." And taking advantage of this calm, he slipped away.

"Perhaps this IS the last time I will set foot here, if feelings are still so strong" Garand thought to himself again. "Lucky for me registering for the Grand Run will allow me this last oppotunity, within the scant protection of Runners..."

And he looked around one last time, taking in the district of Niagra Fallen, trying to memorise every last detail from his vantage point. Finally, he turned away. After all, there is the Grand Run, and preparation time is in short supply....

'Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaash, where aaaaaaaaaaaaare yoooooooooooooooooooooou!?!?!?!?!" The yell Rash dreaded so much pierced the air. What it signalled - That his loving sister Latitia was hunting him down. Probably relentlessly. And she sounded pretty close.

A little way off, a dark skinned, lean-built woman of about five foot eight in height hurried between the buildings, her braided pink and yellow died hair flipping around her as she turned her head this way and that in search of her troublesome half brother.

Garand felt a heavy hand fall on his shoulder as he mused. When he turned to look, he was confronted with a seven-foot tall armored figure. His helmet narrow and streamlined, like a hawk's head, and communication and radar antenna had been disguised as part of it, shaped like thick metallic feathers. Heavy ceramic plates covered the rest of his body, with visible hydrolics at the joints.

Garand quickly identified this as a Celeste Corp Apollo Powered Armor unit, a member of the male half of the Corporation's Pantheon troops. He recalled that the Corporation sent peace keepers to the Grand Run every time it was held, to make sure things didn't get too far out of hand. Not surprisingly, the towering armored figure, well recognizable to just about anyone in the Grand Run's shanty town, had cleared a large circle in the crowd around it, people looking at both the Apollo and Garand with suspicion... and fear.

"I noticed what happened earlier. Don't bother the observers, or else I'll be forced to notify the Runners Council, and have you disqualified." What that essentially translated too was, "You are scum. Even if they threaten you, leave the normal people alone, or else," and Garand knew it. He also knew the one person before him was more than a match for any fifty normal people around him.

The Apollo turned and began moving off, proclaiming to the crowd at large, "The final announcement of rules and starting time will be twenty minutes." The crowd began milling and buzzing again.

((OOC: wkz, I don't mind your making up slang and such, but I would ask you to remember what I laid out in the intro post, as regards to setting. To reiterate: Lake Michigan is controlled by the Sinclair Family, and they refuse to allow Celeste Corp to place any facilities there. Also, Lake Michigan was not irradiated by the Desolation. It is possible, that Garand was in charge of a facility at another of the lakes, so I'll let your posts stand as they are. But please pay attention to details from now on.))

As Jared checked over his gear, he caught sight of a tall, extreemly pale man watching him from the shadow of a building. He wore a green coat that came down well past his knees, despite the relative warmth of the day. It was festooned with a number of heavy leather belts, and below the waist it hung open in the front and had wide openings at the sides to allow the man to reach his pants pockets. It was the oddity of the get-up that made Jared realize who it was: Erik "The Nor-Easter", the current head of the Runners Council, and the only surviving member of the running group that had won the previous Grand Run. He was, like most Grand Run winners, a legend among his own kind, and some people speculated that he might survive long enough to head the Runners Council that organized the next Grand Run. If he did, it would make him the first Runner to live long enough to both win a Grand Run, and supervies two more in over sixty years.

Erik lit a cigarette and approached Jared, nodding absently to himself. The albino didn't bother with an introduction (and one probably wasn't needed,) but instead just said in a casual tone, "You're Tern's son, aren't you?"

As Rash listened to his sister's call, a white haired man, probably in his late thirties, in a dirty tan bodysuit near him cringed, and shook his head. "What's all the noise for? Did somebody loose a rash? And what's so wrong with that? A lot of people here would prefer not to have athletes foot... She should count herself lucky."

The older man grumbled some more, and hefted himself to his feet on a weathered looking pine quarter staff. "Do you want me to tell your sister where you are boy?" He finished, now clearly speaking to Rash.

Jared glanced up just long enough to recognize the Nor-Easter, then returned to evening out his backpack straps.

"You're Tern's son, aren't you?"

Jared raised an eyebrow, but did not look up again. He answered the councilman with a heavily sarcastic tone. "That's what the DNA tests said. Why, are you going to launch into a nostalgic rant about my father, too? Five more and I've beaten my personal record for most times I've had to listen to stories about Dad in a day. Hey, looks like I might win, it's barely noon yet and I've already heard six."

(OOC: Erik is likely to recognize Jared's sarcasm as being inherited from his father, who was a master at the art.)

Rashad winced, shoulders coming up almost about his ears.

"Ah, sure. She's probably going to keep looking and just hurt more people's ears..." he muttered, somewhat sheepishly. Then he blinked, shaking his head and causing a shock of green hair to fall over his eyes. "How'd you know that was us, anyways?"

It might not have been the reaction Jared was looking for, but the Nor-Easter threw his head back and laughed. "Definitely Tern's son. The apple falls not far from the tree, as the saying goes. Not that we grow apples on trees any more."

With a twich of one finger, the albino sent a rain of ash from his cigarette to the ground, the replaced the tobacco in his mouth. "If you keep acting like that, you might inherit his nickname 'Bullrush.' That's bad, by the way."

He sunk his hands into his pockets, and turned to look towards the jagged skyline in the distance. "You can just see the Seared Tower from here. Looks like a good day for running, don't you think?"

The old man laughed at Rash's surprise. "It was a lucky guess. I'm glad I was right, it would have been uncomfortable otherwise. But I heard what you said to that man earlier," here the old fellow nodded towards the man who dealt in skin magazines, "and took a stab at the rest. Really, I do enjoy the lively atmosphere at these gatherings, but the yelling should be kept to a minimum."

The fellow had been walking as he had been talking, and if Rash has followed around, his distinctive green mohawk can now easily be spotted by his sister, who is no more than fifteen feet away now. It may occour to Latty that, as most runners choose to let their hair go grey and white as a mark of rank, perhaps the easiest way to find her brother in the future would be to ask for the green haired runner.

As Garand meanders through the rough streets of the shanty town, he hears a soft, "Pssst!"

If he looks around, he will quickly spot a man in a jacket much like his own, currently huddled down by the base of a rough hut, watching him out of the corner of his eye.

(OOC: I am assuming that the guy who "Pssst!" me is also another former CC employee? At least Garand thinks so...)

Garand took a look at the person who had just signaled him, especially the clothing that signaled the person's status as a CC employee.

"Hmm, Was a CC employee" Garand said to himself, as he looked at the hut. "Wonder what he did wrong"

With that, he approached the hut...

Garand stared.
The man just sat there, face down, still looking through a corner of his eyes.

Garand took in the rough hut, still waiting for a response.
The man sat, seemly dead to the world.

"Hey ya!" Garand spoke, trying to provoke a response.
There was no movement in the shade of the hut.

He nudged the sitting man once with his foot. "Dammit, calling for my attention, then sitting there like a statue" Garand thought to himself. He has half a mind to leave. The competition starting time is just too close to play a staring contest.

(OOC: Replace "That man" with "This thread". *Nudge*nudge*)

(Eep! My apologies, I thought I had posted, but obviously that wasn't the case...)

Rashad grimaced, but took her display of aggressive affection with an air that implied he was far too used to this, offering only token resistance for the first few moments before squirming out of Latitia's grip.

"Just... walking, Latty. Really," he replied, starting to brush his mohawk back again. "I mean, I know the race is starting soon and all, but I figured I might as well loosen up..."

And as he turned around, he saw a couple of youngsters quite close by. "Hmm... should I?"
One glance to the watch, reminding him of the remaining time, said that he should.

Suppressing a sigh, Garand walked towards the nearest pair, a brother and sister team Rashad and Latitia

"No!" Rash frantically replied, shaking his hands. "I mean, we're about to go on the RUN," he added emphatically, stepping back slightly.

"Honestly Latty, don't you have anything else to do besides worry?"

As Garand approached, he heard the tail end of Rash's protests to his sister. As the younger man finished speaking, the white haired fellow who had accompanied him that far burst out laughing. "A truly loving pair of siblings, if ever I saw one. I'll bet you make a quite efficient team out in the wastes, hm?"

He peered at the two with a sharp, knowing gaze from under his bushy white eyebrows...

Erik finished his cigarette with one final drag, and tossed the butt onto the ground. "I'll probably have the hired hands," here he jerked a thumb at a nearby Apollo unit that had just clomped into the square they were in, "call everyone together in about fifteen minutes. I'll be expected to give a speach, the usual song and dance. It was boring just sitting here waiting, so I decided to talk to someone. You looked interesting enough. I wasn't disappointed either." Here he favored Jared with a toothy, shark-like grin.

"After I'm done boring everyone with my talking, they'll probably hand out the IDs. That will probably take another hour or so, given the number of entrants they'll have to go through. After that, things start on the pistol shot." As he spoke, he rummaged around in one of his pockets, and finally drew out a small, grey circle and flipped it towards Jared.

"This'll save them some time. That's your ID now, kid. When they come through, just flash 'em yours, and they'll mark you as in."

Jared could tell by turning the disk over once or twice that it was a simple plastic wafer that could be pinned to his clothes, or just placed in a pocket. The letters GR XXVII are stamped in green on one side. Within the plastic is a small transponder which notifies the Celeste Corp authorities that he is participating in a competitive Running event (the Grand Run, to be specific) and will allow him to get away with any number of crimes for the duration of the Run. Even murder is legal. Runners collect them like medals. Just having a Grand Run ID is a huge boost to reputation, as surviving one is a feat in and of itself.

Of course, if the ID should be stolen from him...

Rash shrugged, giving Latitia a sidelong glance.

Erik shruged. "You're asking the right question of the wrong person. I wanted to know too, but the deal with the Corp. was struck over sixty years ago. No one on our side remembers the original reasons anymore. There's a lot of theories, and a lot of 'em make sense, but no one knows for sure. My best guess is that they want an easy way to keep us occupied, and maybe they hope we'll kill each other off while Running."

Rash felt a slight tap on his shoulder. The old man had watched the exchange, and was now looking after Garand with a thoughtful air. "Hey, kid. You know who that was? I don't mean specifically, but he's Ex-CC. Someone from the Corporation. You can tell by his jacket."

He turned his attention from the retreating elder man too the two younger runners. "I'm not a Runner, but I've watched a lot of Runs. The past six Grand Runs have been won by groups of four to six people, and they've always had at least a knowledge of Celeste's technology on their side. Of course, you can trust to your style, and ignore this old man, but..." He shrugged.

The older gentleman with Rash and Latty nodded to afirm the boy's statement. "He's right, you know. I've talked to many Runners who've gone on this race. If you don't fight other Runners, and don't stand in one place to long, you're almost sure to survive the race, even if you don't win. The prestige alone would be useful."

"No," the older man replied, "but many people out there have worked with the corporation before, and have been paid or bought technology form them. Nothing advanced, of course... but knowing what you-"

The old man never finished, because as he spoke, a loud, clear tone reverberated through the area. Instantly, everyone began moving towards the center area. The Nor-Easter could be seen climbing atop a small pile of boxes there, while attatching something to the collar of his coat.

"Well, as you've heard it's time to start." Erik's voice boomed over the square, amplified by the microphone he had just put on. "I won't hold things up too much. I'm sure you all know why we're here." A few ragged cheers arose from the spectators.

Erik held up an ID tag, identical to the one he had given Jared a few moments ago. "These are your badges. Our hired hands should be handing them out now. Get in line for yours, and as little fistfighting as possible, please." A disappointed, joking sound rose from the crowd, and they began forming loose lines and getting their ID badges from various CC Pantheon troopers who had appeared.

"I could explain the route to you, but there isn't one," Erik continued. A few more laughs came from the crowd. It was a well known fact that the only route was whatever would get you to the Seared Tower as fast as possible. Everyone knew that the Nor-Easter was trying to loosen the tension for them, but he wasn't doing a spectacular job. "So instead, I'll just wish you good luck. Captain Renolds will fire a pistol shot to begin the race once you've all got your IDs. Godspeed."

Latty, Rash, and Garand found themselves near the front of their line, and had their IDs in short order. They had a few minutes before things were likely to start, if the siblings wanted to ask a few more questions of the older man they had met earlier, he was not far off...

Garand now has the pass, but still no partners. Looking around and round, he could find nobody that fits what he has in mind.

"Dammit." Garand thought to himself, "If this continues, I am going to end up alone, with a couple of backstabbers in the middle of the first night."

Latty looked at her pass and then at Rash, a mischievous smile flickering across her lips.

'Well, we could try to win, I guess... It's going to be hard though, baby brother. Are you sure you're up to it? I'm not going to kiss any booboos.'

"I wouldn't trust you to kiss them anyway," he retorted. "Knowing you, you'd BITE."

With that, he gave a quick glance about, looking for viable partners. Perhaps knowledge of technology would be helpful, but he wasn't too terribly impressed with the man who had talked with them earlier about that.

Garrand? Garrend? Garen? Was that his name?
