"Pyro-resistant aether?" Dia repeated aloud questioningly, blinking. She looked over at the others with a strange expression, before it took on a more half-focused look. 'No thank you; I appreciate the offer. As for where I am, I'm over with some friends of mine. I...I'm not sure we experience the world in quite the same manner...but I think I should look something like this to you...' With that, Dia relayed the image of her aura; a loosely humanoid shape in a somewhat foggily luminescent green, surrounded by a larger, dragon-shaped 'shadow.'

'Well, you're near the stove, which we use to cook some of our food. It doesn't show on the plane you're on, as it's not alive, but it's part of the plane we live on...most of us didn't notice you, because we live here almost exclusively. So, we have to find things around here to eat, like...bread, or fruit.' Dia sent the image of both, as well as the stove and the stew it was warming up. 'Does that mean that you eat aether?' Dia tilted her head back...the word was vaguely familiar...it reminded her of her old lessons with Dragan, back in Riva. But, that was a long time ago.

Of course I eat aether. Like this stuff over here.

Jak approaches the kitchen Area, where he can see the things aura clearly. It's not human, but he really can't place what it is. It does seem to have an aura of...disenchantment magic, and seems to be extending this toward the benediction about the stove.

Kelne had started listening in on the telepathic conversation as soon as it had begun. The creature seemed reasonably harmless, but he couldn't help but wonder if it had a bunch of hungry friends out there somewhere.

As for aether, he couldn't help but suspect that this represented some concentration of magic. And the galley would certainly be the place for a bit of magical warding against fire.

On the plus side, it didn't sound as if it was even able to pay attention to audible conversation. "Dia, would you be able to tell from here if the galley or anything in it has been warded against fire?"

Click.

"Oh--! Of course anything around stove would be enchanted against fire! Shit!"

'Ah--! It would be appreciated if you didn't eat that particular enchantment. It kind of helps keep us from, well, dying. It's hard to cast spells around here, but perhaps one of us could try to pull something together, for an alternate meal?'

"See if you can find out how many more of these things there are," Kelne said, getting up, "I daresay we may have found the reason magic's so thin on the ground around here." One of these creatures on its own might not be a major threat, but a whole swarm of them...

"I'm going to check that there's nothing gnawing on my carpet," He said, heading doorwards. He did take the time to make a brief apology to the card players, saying that something had come up. After that, he made straight for his cabin.

He figured Dia could keep it talking, or at least occupied, for the short time it would take him to retrieve the items he wouldn't care to lose.

FLUFFY EAT FOOD

Unread postby pd Rydia » Fri Apr 08, 2005 9:03 pm

"Griao?" Fluffy chirruped questioningly. Receiving no acknowledgement from Dia, he figured it was safe enough to begin consumption of the remainder of her meal.

'Well...' Dia thought about it for a moment. 'The easiest thing would probably a spot of illusion magic. Will that do? How much of it do you need?'

Jak wasn't sure what was going on, but he gathered enough from the few words Dia and Kelne said, along with the thing's movement after the realisation about the stove, to figure that at least one of them was talking to it somehow. He wagered telepathy, silently cursing himself for neglecting to learn the skill yet again.

"What exactly is going on?" he asked Kelne, trying to catch him before he made it through the door. Failing that he'd have to ask Dia, although judging from her expression she was the one communicating with whatever this thing was.

"Well, it looks like we're dealing with an astral creature that feeds on magic," Kelne said, pausing along his path, "Dia's managing to distract it from eating the enchantment in the galley for the moment, but there are bound to be others about. I'm going to check my cabin - there are things there I really don't want being eaten."

He considered a moment, putting his thoughts in order to make sure he covered everything, "At a guess, I'd say creatures like this are the reason magic's so thin around here. Are there any other major enchantments on the ship we need to worry about?"

The more he thought about it, the more inclined he was to simply take off and get out of the creatures' territory before more of them showed up.

Oh, you'd have to be over here for that to work. The thing replies to Dia, as it hovers about her. You can come over here, right?

The group will notice they are getting a few onlookers now, among the general group of sailors.

****

Returning to his Cabin, with Ushyu following him curiously, Kelne finds everything is in order. Nor does he find any presence of other magic eaters. At least he thinks that he doesn't.

"Jak, are you trained to visit the astral plane?" Dia asked aloud. Fluffy trilled questioningly, having cleaned up both of their meals; however, the dragonhalf had already returned to her other conversation.

'Really, come over there? Why is that, do you know? And would it be the same with, say, ice or shadow magic? I'm not trained to be able to visit your plane, only see it--I can visit the shadow plane, though. I'm checking to see if Jak--' Here there was a pause as Dia had to concentrate on seeing what Jak's aura looked like, and pass on that image. '--might know how. He's studied more formally than I have.'

Jeridan was watching then as they spoke, hearing them... but only really half listening through his stupor. It was like the difference between being in a debate room, and watching one on television.

However, he eventually managed to kick his brain into gear enough to grasp that they were discussing a creature, and one who ate magic. From their calm reactions, he also had to assume that whatever the particulars were, they weren't too bad. With that in mind, he kept quiet and watched for now, his eyes looking a bit glazed.

Well, everything seemed safe enough here for the moment. Still, better safe than sorry. The soul gem went into a pocket, as did those handy glasses looted from the Infinity corporation. The sword, a recipient of considerable work over the past few weeks, was slung over his back. He should really come up with a name for it. As for the carpet, well, he was just going to have to prop it up against the wall of the mess where he could keep an eye on it.

"I don't suppose you have a perspective on this, kiddo?" he asked Ushyu idly as he rolled up the carpet.

Even if you're constantly plotting and trying to gain a perspective on how you can turn a situation to your advantage, certain ideas still seem to spring out of nowhere. So it was as in this case. Of course, the idea would never work. And yet, what would it hurt to investigate it?

"Ushyu, could I take a look at your aura for a second?" He asked as soon as the carpet was rolled up. He extended a hand in invitation for her to grasp. If he could get a good enough sense of the limiter as it was distinct from the cabbit's aura itself, it was conceivable that he might be able to talk their visitor into eating it.

She nods once, perking up one of her floppy ears. "Mew?"

Upon reading, Kelne finds that this is little odd about her aura. Or rather, it seems to be fairly normal, nothing really stands out. Perhaps the limiter doesn't have an astral signiture? Or perhaps it is just too subtle to read.

"Well, so much for that idea," he said. He wasn't too bothered by the failure - it wasn't as if he'd had much hope in the plan to begin with.

Picking up the carpet, he made his way back towards the galley by an indirect route. Might as well check whether he could spot any of the creatures in other parts of the ship along the way.

"No."

Even if he could, he didn't fancy the idea of traveling to the same plane that magic gobbling entities. They might latch onto him like some horrible parasite.

"Can't you just convince it to leave?" he asked, silently wondering how you'd go about disposing of such a creature. Anything that could thin the astral like this was a monstrosity in his mind.

Especially anything that masquerades as a small child, he added, remembering a certain oddity back in Doma. Admittedly it hadn't consumed his very being, but it had latched onto him like a giant leech.

"I convinced it not to eat the fire-proofing around the stove," Dia replied, before pausing. "...It wants to know if it can come over here. To the physical plane, that is, since I can't come over there." Her brow wrinkled. "That should be possible...how could you bring an astral being onto the physical plane? Would you have to create a physical body for it?"

Well, perhaps he was just being overly paranoid... Nah. There was no such thing. Still, he might have jumped to the wrong conclusion about their visitor. Of course, that still left the mystery of the thin magic in these parts.

Shrugging philosophically, he re-entered the galley, pausing to prop his carpet against the wall. That act and the fact that he now had an extra sword slung across his back would probably net him a few strange looks. He had only himself to blame.

"Any progress?" He asked, tuning back in to the mental conversation as he rejoined the group.

Jak shook his head. This thing wasn't a ghost. People from the material plane can journey to the astral by various means, such as portals, and it stood to reason in his head that the same methods should work for moving an astral being to the material plane. However, he had no intention of letting such a thing anywhere near his beloved material plane and, more importantly, himself.

"Possession wouldn't work. The thing is of another plane, it's not a disembodied spirit. Not what we should even contemplate bringing it over in the first place! Are you mad? This thing gobbles magic up. If it had the chance to physically latch onto you or I," he gestured to Dia as he said this, "it'd drain us dry in seconds. It's a parasite, get rid of it. Fob it off with some story, or tell it to piss off. We've got no obligation to feed it."

"He's been polite with us, it's only fair to be polite with him--and it only makes sense to try everything possible before resorting to something that can start a fight. Are you so eager for another battle?" Dia retorted drily. "Anyhow, he seems to be interested in coming over so he can eat some illusion magic, or maybe some regular food. He seems to think he can only eat enchantments--like those handy little fire-proofings--on that side." It didn't seem like Dia was quite so sure about this.

Dia paused for a moment.

'Do you know if any of your kind ever walk on our plane?' she asked. 'My race, we can visit the shadow plane. A friend had to teach me how when I was older, because I didn't grow up around my own kind. Speaking of which, where are the others like you? Where did you come from, where do you live?'

"I have to agree with Jak on this one," Kelne said, "I'll grant you it doesn't seem all that dangerous. Still, it would need a good reason indeed for me to go to that kind of trouble. However, if it wants a fire-proofing enchantment, I can certainly manage that. No sign of any others around the ship, incidentally," he finished.

Kelne simply shook his head. He could think of any number of dangerous things which would fit on the ship. Foenix, for instance, would fit in the galley with ease. Still, he didn't attempt to enlighten Paige.

"I quite agree," he said to Dia, picking out a suitable spoon to fireproof. He'd wait until she felt she had the answers she wanted.

When Jak mentioned "being sucked dry", Jeridan's eyes shot up. He'd stopped picking at his food, and they had his full attention now. It was bad enough that they'd been attacked before, and it was aparently his fault, but now his little nightmare come true was going to appear? ... Again?

Externally, he just appeared to be payying more attention, and he looked a bit stiff. And of course, none of this was particularly condusive to his speaking.

"Oh!" 'I think that might be what we call "mana." We've noticed it getting thinner here, but we aren't sure why. Do you know why?'

"Mana and aether aren't the same, I don't think," Dia said aloud. "Who knows about enchantments--Kelne? What's the difference between the mana that is pulled upon to cast a spell, and what keeps the actual enchantment going after its cast?"

Meanwhile, Fluffy pattered over to Paige, tossing his chin over her arm. Giving a mighty yawn of boredom, his eyes closed to slits as he watched the proceedings, quietly rumbling.

"It varies depending on who's doing the casting," Kelne said, "There are several different approaches to enchanting. However," he continued after a moments' thought, "I'd say that what's important from our visitor's perspective is that an enchantment refines and concentrates mana."

Further consideration ensued, "Still, I very much doubt that there's a surplus of enchanted items out here. So there must be something else in nature that creates a similar effect. Perhaps something like the elemental crystals, on a smaller scale."

He couldn't help but wonder what that something might be. Unfortnately, their common frame of reference with the creature was limited. Certainly it wouldn't know what such an object looked like on the material plane. If it existed here at all. The most they'd be able to get out of it would probably be a location.
