Nameless looked over to the mage that stood tall over everyone from his place on the box. He wondered if he should risk using the device in some test now or wait for a better opportunity. He dared not show himself to anyone here and he wanted to see how it worked, especially with a mage around.

For now Nameless made no motion to move. How would this volunteering work anyway and who chooses the location? No, better to wait.

"Yep. Absolute craziness if you ask me, but we Neo Vanists have to check it out."

Nagan chuckled.

Having picked out all the carrots from the tray, Pervy tosses a few more gil on the counter.

"Bah!" he says to Alash and the tender, "Fer all ye know, th' lad might be ontae somethin' good. Most folks dun but their names on th' line like this lest they got a good chance o' makin' it work fer 'em."

Pocketing the carrots, he downs the rum, then frowns a little at the shotglass. Ol' Hawkin's'd have this 'stiller's head...

"Oy, thanks few th' carrots an' yer word, matey," he says, standing up. "I'll be off t' see that show th' mage's got planned up."

As Pervy walks out of the bar, and toward the square, the wiggling in his other pocket dies away, as a cream brown crystal floats from it. It move up and over his head, then changes in into a creme-furred Cabbit with green eyes, setting between the white mage's ears.

"Have a good nap?" he asks.

"Mya meow!" the little creature answers happily, making herself comfortable in Pervy's tangled auburn hair. The Guard Captain chuckles, as he carries into the square, looking about.

Nameless shifted on the spot when his body suddenly twitched a claw and he nearly felt an anger rush through his viens. Looking round he wondered what it could be, this sickening feeling that felt like his demonic body both hated and feared at the same time.

Controlling himself he carefully looked around, trying to look into the magical plane he was once told about by a mage of sorts a fair time ago while investigating around. Hikiral? Had he been called? No matter really. What was causing this feeling?

Walking into the square, Pervy spotted the white sheet draped over the contraption, along with a mage standing on a box.

"Volunteers are still needed, please inquire here!"

"Eh." Alash conceeded. "We'll see, won't we?" Taking a sip of his beer, Alash decided to stay back and watch the amusement sure to follow as the spell... machine, or whatever it was... failed utterly. Hopefully it'd be a spectacular thing.

Zukath ignored the comment on craziness that Nagan had made, instead turning his attention to the man on the box.

Raising his left hand to about level with his head, palm forward, he said, "I'd like to volunteer."

Ushyu leaps from Pervy's head and poof into cabbit child form as she lands on the ground. Grinning, Pervy reaches into his pocket, and pulls out one of the carrots for her. "There ye are," he says, as she takes the carrot with a joyful meow and begins to dine.

They walk up to the desk, where volunteers are being taken. While the pirate had no intention of being a lab cat, he was curious.

"Oy, lad!" he says to the person taking volunteers, "What's all this supposed t' do, eh? What's a pigeon got t' expect, signing up t' use that thing?"

The mage smiled at Zukath. "Excellent! I wanted to see how a non-human would handle it..." he handed Zukath a release form identical to the one Nagan had, and a pen.

He turned to Pervy. "Well, you can expect a slight discomfort, but in the end, you'll be quite amazed."

Pervy grins, then says, "I once knew a bloke who claimed bein' struck by lightnin' felt th' same way. Why dun ye be a bit less vague, eh?"

Zukath, holding the release form in his right hand, looked through it quickly, and, taking the pen in his left hand, he signed the form, handing both back over when he finished.

He wasn't sure if he was supposed to hang onto the form or return it.

Never, EVER volunteer. Kelne had wound up volunteering for something a while back, and it had gone on for months of perilous mayhem.

And, by the looks of it, that was one of the Neo-Vane mages up near the front. Thankfully, he didn't seem to be in charge, but in Kelne's experience, that lot brought nothing but trouble. And annoying debates on the nature of magic, of course...

No, they wouldn't be getting him to use the device before it was proved safe. With that thought in mind, Kelne found himself a nice vantage point some distance from the device and settled in to wait.

"Might, I might," Pervy replies to Nagan, recalling the mage from that day in the courtyard. "Ol' Flintlips 'ere ain't sellin' 'nough honey t' draw in many flies, tis 'e though?"

The green-robed mage nodded.

"Yeah, I know. Only reason I'm going is he's crazy enough to make a non-Wind travel mechanism. So it should be rather amusing when it breaks down. Hopefully, without exploding."

Cause I'm just playing the waiting game...

Postby Choark » Sat Mar 15, 2003 10:16 am

With narrowed eyes he looked upon the cause of his discomfort and once again it seemed things would not go easy for him. A rather strange person, one not like he had seen before with those odd ear, was near the device and seemed to take an interest to it.

It wasn't harmful to Nameless to view the Holy magical aura around the man, but it made it harder for him to keep his body from lashing out.

He wished he understood more about how all this worked, how much the body thinks and reacts by itself and how much was under the souls control. Or was it the minds? Or did the mind count as the body and thusly he was fighting both?

Nameless once again thanked the small luck he had of not being completely merged with this undead-demon vessle, otherwise he may very well be some sort of mindless violent beast with no hope at all.

The mage leaned over to Pervy. "Sir, are you volunteering or not? Because I'm going to start soon, and I need to clear the area..."

"Ye better hope that ye ain't hidin' somethin' I should be knowin' 'bout," Pervy says, glaring at the man. "What with Dungeon Block H not bein'n cleaned out lately an' all."

At the same time, Ushyu stands on her tip-toes, and takes the pen in hand, drawing a little smiley face on the "sign here" line.

Noticing that, Pervy looks down at Ushyu and asks, "Ye wanna run through that?"

"Reow!" answers the cabbit with an enthusiastic nod.

"Right then," Pervy answers, taking another sheet and signing it. Handing it back to the man, the Captain fixes a glare on him. "Ye better've been upfront, turnshae," the nekojin growls, "Chancellor Smartz owe me a damn favor, and I dun have a trouble callin' it in t' have 'im torture yer arse. And dun think me havin' a regen spell will make it any nicer. Ain't nothin' like carvin' out a pound o' yer flesh, then havin' it grow back.

"Ye got me, Matey?"

"Heh. That guy's signing up for this crazy experiment? Oh, this'll be rich" Taking his mug of beer with him, Alash decided to find a better spot to see the machine with. Unfortunately, there were far too many people in the way. "Gods damn it... always gotta have something goin on...." he mumbled.

Looking from his drink and looking outside Alash made a decision. Draining the mug as fast as he absolutely could, he put it down on a table and ran outside. This oughtta be fun to watch, at least. Amused expression and all, Alash found a comfortable spot to lean on and waited for the fireworks to begin.

Nagan shook his head, chuckling to himself.
"Y'know, Pervy, we might really consider getting you a therapist. Did you have childhood issues which lead to your natural disposition towards violence?"

The mage looked at Pervy. "You can't do that, as you just signed a medical release. So, whatever. In ANY case, it's time to begin." He piled another box on top of the one he was standing on, and moved the two next to a rope he had on the sheet.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, the time has now come! I reveal to you, the future!" With a flourish, he pulled the string, and the sheet fell away.

It turned out that what was giving the form to the sheet was wood, which was propped up. Obviously, the mage had done this so that people thought it was really the invention. The real deal was about three feet in diameter, and was a small raised portion of metal. The mage allowed the crowd to gasp for a bit, then spoke.

"Ladies and gentlemen, this is what I call a "teleportation device." If you stand on it, it transports you to the sister platform, instantly." He opened another white sheet, revealing another platform. He touched a button on each of them. "I shall do this first, so that there are no suspicions." Without any ceremony, he stepped on to one disc. There was a flash, and the man was gone...

...only to appear within a second or so on the other platform, with a flash. The crowd gasped. "And there you have it! Would any of my volunteers wish to try?"

Nameless was amazed. He had not expected such a thing to happen before him. However its usefullness to him was not as great as he had hoped for. If they needed to use two devices then it would not help him ove about to locations he had never been before.

Still he watched on, intrested. How does such a thing work?

Kelne was not impressed. There were a lot of mages out there, and this was hardly the first to come up with a linked portal system. Still, those ones tended to be of limited range, and difficult to create. If he had created an easily reproduced system with decent range, it could well be the revolution the man claimed.

"Two questions," he said firmly, making his way towards the front of the crowd, "What kind of distances can these cover, and where do they draw their power from?" He regarded the answer to the second question as potentially more important than the first, but when he tried to pin down the reason, it escaped him.

Zukath was probably the first of the volunteers to step forward. "I wish to try this, sir."

He was anxious to know how this felt.

The mage nodded to Zukath. "Just step up on that platform, sir." With that, he turned to Kelne. "Well, I haven't tested the range, but it SHOULD be practically unlimited. The way they work, it should. And as for the second part...well, that's a secret."

Pervy just watched. He didn't care about forms. If needed, he could get the queen to anull it. All he knew was if that apparatus hurt Ushyu, that mage had a world of agony coming.

Still, he had to admire the mage was willing to go first. And, it worked.

Ushyu was bouncing eagerly from foot to foot, wanting to try to machine. She bounded up behind Zukath, eager for her chance.

Zukath stepped up close to the platform. Suddenly, just as he was about to put his feet on the platform, he had doubts about doing this... which made him hesitate.

After a few seconds, Zukath put his doubts in the back of his mind and stepped onto the platform without further delay.

"Alright..." Kelne wanted to press the point, but he doubted he'd get any more information out of the man, and wasn't going to make futile attempts based on a vague sense of unease.

"These would be the only portals you've made so far?"

As Zukath stepped upon the portal, he felt a momentary tingle. It wasn't anything too bad, but it was a bit odd. He closed his eyes, and when he opened them, he realized he was on the other platform. The crowd had somewhat dispersed, but there were a few people still watching.

"Yes, these are the only two that exist currently. I think a few more will be made, though."

Not bad at all... and not too much physical stress, either...

Zukath had the feeling that this 'teleportation device' would be worthwhile. But he did disapprove of the fact that the crowd didn't seem to be paying as much attention to it. If someone who had not made it could go through it, this had to be a breakthrough in travel.

Snorting once to express his sole disapproval, Zukath stepped off the platform, stretching his arms a little as he did so.

To Pervy's eyes, Ushyu seemed to shimmer, and there was a brief puff of smoke. Truthfully, there was no need for the smoke. The mage who made it was just a bit flamboyant, so he added that effect in. However, no ill effects befell the cabbit child, and Ushyu popped out on the other end, fine.

Nagan sighed.
"Right, right. I don't know what the hell magic you're using, but...alright."

He walked up onto the platform, readying himself for the damned thing to explode.

It didn't explode, nor did it use Wind Magic, but like the others, he popped up on the next platform within a second or so.

"Are you convinced now?" The mage asked Nagan.

"I'll be damned," said Alash. "The crazy contraption actually WORKS. I'm impressed." And those folks that're rushing to get onto it... I'm a bit jealous.

Part of him wanted to see how it worked. Part of him figured he should he among the crowd trying to get onto the thing.

And Part of him wished he hadn't drunk that beer so fast. It was actually better than he'd expected.
