"A...a man, but...but he's....he's..."

Not sure how to describe the sight before him, James stammers a bit, at a complete loss for words. Then, out of nowhere, they seem to simply flow into his mind, and he speaks them to their would-be saviour with an eloquence that completely belies his condition.

"...Surrounded in a coruscating gleam that suffuses his flesh and shines from his eyes and mouth, seething out of the very pores of his skin in a luminous vapor that coalesces into a brilliant corona that seems to outline him from every angle..."

With his speech done, he stares blankly at the possible savior; it's precisely right, he knows that, but he hasn't a clue how or why. He does his best to slow his breathing, trying to calm himself before speaking again. The brief connection he felt is entirely gone now, but it feels somehow familiar. It feels like the words from before, but more powerful, more...direct.

Eyes focus on the man in the bow tie, the sounds about the metal prison completely ignored as he furrows his brow, trying to get even the slightest handle on what's going on to them all right now.

"...Right? That...that's...is that what we...ought to see?"

As soon as the word "glowing" passed Sara's lips, the man in the bow tie's eyes hardened. His attention fixed on Sara like a hawk that had just spotted a field mouse, and he had just opened his mouth to pursue clarification when James' recitation caught his ear. He turned to look at James, tilted his head down to stare at the librarian over the top of his glasses. "...Coruscating? ...er, yes. That's what I wanted to know. ...and then some." He muttered the last three words as he walked over to Daniel and reached for one of his wrists, took hold of the cuff around it.

Daniel looked pleasantly relieved that his restraints were finally being tended to before the situation could get any worse, but that flash of optimism was quickly dashed when their rescuer suddenly pinned his arm back against the container wall and, his grip on the knife finally secure, slashed his blade across Daniel's bicep. It was a light wound, far less than the survival knife could have inflicted if the man wanted to do serious damage, but deep enough to draw an immediate swell of blood, the metallic tinge of which danced vividly in everyone's nostrils for a moment. He slid one side of the blade over the wound, smearing it with Daniel's blood, then stepped away.

"Sorry!" The slasher apologized as he moved deeper into the container, putting the shining man struggling back to his feet between himself and Daniel. "You were the closest." With that, he grabbed the shoulder of the shining man's jacket and, despite a sudden burst of disoriented struggling and a many-voiced shout of protest that thundered in all the prisoner's ears, shanked an old man unceremoniously in the gut.

"Yeah, sounds like you have a thesaurus in y- ow!" Daniel's little comment was cut short by a cry of surprised pain and a glare in his rescuer's direction. "What the hell?"

The explanation that came after didn't abate his pain-induced anger much. "What do you mean, I was the clos-"

Another interruption, this time by a thousand voices shouting, which are in turn cut short by a knife to the stomach.

"...Oh. Alright, yeah. Cool. Sure." It's unclear if Daniel suddenly understands the man's motive for cutting his arm, or if he's just playing it safe after watching that same man disembowel an octogenarian.

Despite being two or three decades older than his assailant, the shining man kept up quite a struggle even after he was stabbed. The man with the knife used his grip on the other's shoulder to spin him around and run him into the back of the container, keeping his blade buried in the other's midsection. For the prisoners who could bear to watch the violence, it quickly became apparent that the shining man was quickly becoming...less shiny. The light seething out of his skin that fed into his corona stopped flowing outward, though it still throbbed beneath the surface of his skin, and the corona itself flickered, pulsed inward, shrinking and dimming with each pulse as if he were sucking the light back up like a sponge. The great wing-like rays of light that blazed from his back no longer extend into unseen eternity, they were suddenly both finite and shortening, twisting erratically like ribbons tied to a fan as they were pulled into his body.

The once shining man clawed at the air, at his own chest, oblivious to his attacker yanking the knife cleanly free of his body. The man with the knife raised it, looked like he was preparing to plunge it into the man's chest, but he stopped himself. From his body language, the eager hunch of his shoulders and the tightness of his grip on the weapon, it was clear he did so grudgingly. The once shining man, now merely suffused with an internal glow that was not nearly so painful for the captives to behold, opened his mouth to shriek just as the last glowing ends of the ribbons of light were drawn into him. His thousand voices collapsed halfway through, leaving only the voice of this flesh, and the last half of his agonized question echoed clearly through the container: "--YOU DONE?"

The man with the knife shoved the wounded one down to the ground and stalked back to the front of the container, avoiding the eyes of the people he did not come to free. He flung the knife almost carelessly to the floor, and it clattered to a stop near Samantha's feet. He glanced down at the walkie-talkie dropped earlier by the man he just stabbed, considered it, then kicked it clear out of the container before he turned to look at the lot of them. "I get you're all new to this, but explanations have to wait." He pointed down to the plastic bag that distracted and disconcerted the previously shining man. "I loosened some of the screws on your shackles, when I took the bags off so you could come back. You should be able to twist them the rest of the way open yourselves before...look, you'll have to finish him, I don't think it works if I do it and you'll need the strength."

As he spoke he backed towards the front of the container, glancing repeatedly over his shoulder. He jammed his hands into his pockets and fished out an LED flashlight from one. He switched it on, looked around, then wedged it into a ring bolted to the wall similar to the ones their chains ran through. "They have to think they succeeded or they won't stop, I'll do what I can from here. My name is Virgil --" A series of tremendous thudding sounds from the roof of the container drowned out his next several words as the ship's crane latched onto the box. "--L.A.! I'll tell you all that I know, I promise you, but whatever you do: do not contact your families until we've spoken."

Virgil looked around at them one last time, regret and apology etched deeply upon his face, then stepped out of the container and one after the other shoved the doors firmly shut. One bolt slid home, then the entire structure lurched into the air.

Since not all Uniques are combat-applicable, you also have the option of using your FP on the innate Seer power "Enhancement". Its workings will be explained in more detail in the OOC thread after the episode; for the purposes of this Scene, you can use Enhancement to give your character an unexpected burst of strength, speed, or agility in one of your posts.))

((Other notes on how an AS works:
- You can declare that you're spending your FP in an OOC note in the post it's used in if you like, but it's not necessary to do so if I can tell you're using your Unique or Enhancement from what you've written.
- Consider my posts turn markers. After any post of mine in an AS (starting with this one), you can each post up to one time before I respond again. I don't have to wait for everyone to get a post in to respond and launch a new turn, though I may do so if it feels like someone's being left behind.
- The one-post-per-turn rule only applies to posts in which your character takes some sort of action. You can keep posting after getting your action in to respond to dialogue from other players.
- As a guideline for AS post length, imagine the scene as it would be edited on film - cutting frequently between the characters involved, staying with each only long enough to see them do something cool or important in the context of the scenario.
- Any questions, PM or IM me!))

"Don't- " On edge already by the last few minutes, Virgil's sudden attack of their mysterious captor sends James pale, watching as the man collapses, cringing as he screams out and his voice takes on a more normal tone. Now with his last words to them, his sudden escape, James is at a loss as their container begins lifting into the air. Everything is so inexplicable, so much so fast, and whatever it was that happened to him, he can almost feel the last pretenses of order to his life fall away as fear floods his mind.

Finally processing Virgil's last words to the group, he's quick to try and unbind himself, trying to pull the shackles free as he described and doing his best to ignore the man bleeding out in back of their prison, whatever it is he might be.

The initial uneven upward lurch of the container smoothed out as it was raised higher and higher. Its suspended swaying, while slight, was enough to make it difficult to maintain a firm footing for those whose lives hadn't given them opportunity to acquire a decent pair of sea legs.

The first shackle cuff James tried was one of the ones Virgil had loosened the screw of. It only took several firm twists to spread the cuff enough to pull that hand free, but the loose shackle was too large to pass through the lashing ring the chains ran through. Still, he had a hand free and substantially more reach and maneuverability than he had a moment before, even if he had to mind his balance more carefully now that he wasn't strung up by both wrists.

In the darker end of the container, the wounded old man pushed up to his knees, spat something thick and wet onto the floor. An eerie blue light within strained against the confines of his skin, illuminating him from the inside like a liver-spotted paper lantern. Contrary to the shine that had exploded across their senses when he first came into their view, this light did not hurt. It might even have been soothing had it emanated from any other source, in any other context.

Despite his injury, it seemed his breath had steadied. He began to laugh, most bitterly.

The promise of loosened screws was enough to spur Sara into actions actually capable of resolving her situation, reaching up with questing fingers for the screws and twisting them looser as quickly as she could. Her eyes remained on the old man that was rapidly recovering from a brutal blow far faster than she would have imagined. Unpleasant laughter spurred her own as she jerked the shackles to test if she had done enough to free herself.

That was more than enough motivation for Sam, but rather than go for the shackles, she tries to get the knife with her bare foot. Then the container lurched upward and Sam is sent twisting, one foot determined to keep the knife near, the other trying to keep her from losing her balance. As it steadies, she pulls the knife toward her and, feeling certain that it is not going anywhere, finally begins to work at her shackles.

All of this is accompanied by a long string of muttered curses.

As Sara's fingers sought a grip on the screws of her shackles, a few sharp flecks of metal peppered her cheek. Perhaps whatever tool Virgil had used while loosening them for the captives had started to strip the head. She was still able to get enough of a grip on that one to feel it turn as quickly as she could move her fingers; the other shackle was more secure. When she jerked at the shackles, however, not only did the loosened clamp open enough for her to pull that hand free, the tightly-screwed cuff around her other wrist snapped off of the chain entirely. She was free.

Sam's presence of mind paid off as she kept the knife under control through the early swaying of the lifted container. She kept it pinned underfoot as she found her own loosened shackle and twisted the screw out of the clamp, and was soon able to pull one hand free. With one cuff empty, the chain would allow Samantha enough slack to reach the floor with her free hand.

In the back of the container, the laughter had subsided. Their captor rose to his feet, gripping the indentations of the corrugated steel on the back wall to steady himself, and turned to face them. He seemed to be studying his hands, curling and opening his fists as he examined his new condition. The glow emanating from within him grew brighter as his skin grew tauter and the marks of his age evaporated. Satisfied with or, more accurately, resigned to the change that had followed his stabbing, he stood up straight as the container reached the end of its climb.

One hand thrust forward and the eagle's head cane he had dropped in the assault sprang off the floor of the container and whistled through the air to land in his waiting hand. Gripping it by its lower end like a club, he drew it back, and his eyes, blue light churning behind their irises, focused on the smallest, loudest, and nearest of them: Rachel.

The eagle's head at the end of the cane glinted in the dim electric light cast from the flashlight Virgil had left behind. It swung through the air in a wide, swift arc, its sharp beak zeroing in on Rachel's temple, but as the container moved again the man with the cane lost his footing -- as did everyone else. Still, his swing connected with the wall just beside Rachel's arm with a sharp, screeching BANG, as the eagle's beak punched through the steel. Both his hands went to the cane to steady himself through the container's move.

Daniel and Rachel, their shackles still fastened, bore the least inconvenience, merely jostled roughly in place against the walls they were chained to. Sara, unbound, was the worst off for the container's sudden swing to the side. She was hurled nearly off her feet and into the wall opposite where she'd been chained, between James and Daniel. James and Samantha each still had a chain to steady them through the lurch, but it was still enough to take them both off their feet. Samantha's foot lost the knife and it skittered along a corrugated track until it was just out of her reach.

James clings to the chain, trying to regain his footing as he stares at the old man. When Sara slams into their wall, he reaches out a hand to her, helping her back up as well, calling out over the various noises blasting in his ears. "Are you all right?!"

Rachel had winced away when the cane was coming, though now she was wishing she hadn't as her head banged slightly against the side of the container. Of course, that just freed her up to go back to her oh so helpful shouting.

"Shit fuck damn shit shit fuck fuck fuck fuck!"

With a decidedly unflattering squawk of surprise, Sara slammed into the far wall, but recovered quickly enough as James helped her back to her feet.

"I'm ok! I'm ok! Are you still...? Get this thing off, we gotta get outta here before we get drowned, or crushed, or... or anything!"

The young woman grabbed the chain still tethering James to the wall and set to work attempting to loosen his last restraint.

Sam swears as the knife skitters away, while her hands grasp the chain to keep at least a little balance. When the container steadies enough to focus her attention on the more important matter of freeing herself from the restraints, she proceeds to do just that. With a feat of strength that would make a reasonable person believe that the welding was of poor quality, Sam tears the restraint from its place with a pop and a clatter, and then dives for the knife.

"I'm..." He nods, clinging to the chain to keep himself up, trying not to stare towards the man that just smashes through a sheet of metal with a wooden stick. "I'm fine. We need to-" The sound of Sam's torn restraint draws James' attention, and he falls silent, as he tries to figure if he should take the obvious interpretation or that implied by the strangeness of the last few minutes' events.

Daniel stares at Sam for a moment in disbelief when she tears her way out of her restraints. "Mierda, that's ridiculous," he mutters.

He doesn't dwell on the spectacle too long, though, and moves onto trying to replicate it. He braces his feet against the bottom of the container and starts struggling with the bolted-down cuffs, hoping that his one-day-a-week "routine" in the university's gym paid off.

"Hey! Loud one! Why aren't you kicking him?! He's right there, hit him!" He turns to yell at Rachel as he strains against the bolts.

"Oh, right." Rachel says flatly. It honestly hadn't even occurred to her...So now she had to make up for lost time! She began shouting again, punctuating every major syllable with a kick.

"Don't! You! Try! Ta! Hit! Me! With! Yer! Stupid! Cane! Ya! Stupid! Old! Fuck! I'll! Kick! You! In! The! Face! And! Why! Am I! Naked! You! Creepy! Old! Pervert! Who! Uses! Canes! Like! That! Anyway! You! Are! Th'! Worst! Kinda! Person!"

While James' second shackle was still screwed shut, it had only been tightened enough to keep a dead man in place. Sara had the additional advantage of not being bound and was easily able to find a useful grip on the head of the screw, and, by the time Rachel had kicked her last, James was able to wriggle his hand out of the cuff.

Samantha's desperate lunge paid off with a sharp snapping twang of breaking bolts, and left her doubly armed: she finally had Virgil's knife in hand, and a foot-and-a-half length of chain dangled from her other wrist with both the lashing ring and opened shackle lending some weight and edges to its end. The dim light of the oncoming dusk shone through a small jagged hole left where the ring used to be bolted.

Daniel, on the other hand, had no such luck. The lashing ring the chain was threaded through held fast to the wall against his straining. The only thing that budged was the cuff on his left wrist, which seemed to be just loose enough to chafe as he struggled.

The man with the cane held fast to it until the container completed its horizontal swing and settled into a gently swaying rest. He'd just pulled the head of his cane free of the wall when Samantha tore her chain out of the wall, and his head swiveled to turn his cold, menacing attention to her as he steadied his his stance. The cane whistled through the air as he raised it with a twirl, taking aim as if it were a javelin, with its steel-tipped point aimed at Samantha's chest as Daniel shouted at Rachel.

His throw was interrupted by a small, angry foot smashing into his hip, followed in quick succession by three or four more to his stomach and legs before he got some distance and watched as she continued to furiously flail. He let her go at it for a while, calmly reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a dark silk handkerchief that was wrapped around some small weight, the contents clinking as the little parcel dangled from his fingertips.

"I've never offered a refund for my services before," he mused aloud as he twirled his grasp on the cane back into a clubbing grip and swung the back of the eagle's head violently into Rachel's solar plexus, cutting her raving and breathing short. "But today, I'll make an exception."

He dropped the handkerchief, which fell open as it fluttered to the ground, empty, then seized Rachel by the throat with the hand that had held it. As she seized for breath against his throttling grip and the spasming in her midsection, Rachel suddenly felt a cold, hard obstruction filling her throat almost to tearing, and tasted metal on the back of her tongue. He kept the cane at the ready in his other hand, and leveled his superior gaze at the three freed passengers in warning. Or challenge.

James offers a quick word of thanks to Sara before spotting the old man striking back at Rachel after her barrage of blows. By the time his eyes are around to James, he's already charging towards him, scowling without a word. With as much force as he can muster, he slams his shoulder into Rachel's attacker, hopefully forcing his grip from her throat as the two of them slam into the corrugated wall.

The man's thin mouth creased into a victorious smirk as he saw the aggressive, protective urge spur James to action. Without hesitation he opened his hand and his cane lunged out of his grip to hurtle eagle's-head-first at the escaped prisoner. He had not counted on the sudden burst of strength and speed James had unwittingly summoned, however, and the cane whistled over the librarian's head as he lunged. It narrowly missed Sara and Samantha and left an impressive dent in the right-hand door, hitting with enough force that it budged and let a thin flicker of dusklight in between the doors before lodging shut again.

James' shoulder hit with tremendous force and he rammed the older and considerably more luminous man into the back wall of the shipping container. At least one rib crunched loud enough for all of them to hear and their former captor howled in outrage and pain. While the tackle had ripped his hand away, the obstruction he'd somehow willed into Rachel's throat was still in there, shifting and clinking more with Rachel's efforts to breathe now that her throat wasn't being compressed around it.

The container shook and swayed violently with the impact. Most of the captives were able to keep their feet through the turbulence, at least until the clamps on the top of the container released and their prison plummeted 30 feet to the ocean surface.

With James free, Sara pressed herself against the wall and scuttled over to Daniel nearby, doing her best to remain out of the fighting as the old man took a painful blow from the librarian. With one hand on the chain and the other moving toward the bolts, she had sufficient grip to weather the violent movement of the container. At least until it entered freefall, and she found her feet leaving the floor.

Desperately clinging to the chains, the bolts temporarily forgotten, the would-be journalist did her best to keep from tumbling about what had long since begun to feel like a metallic coffin.

With all that was happening, Rachel had sort of checked out. Being attacked, being choked, choking on something else, being naked, being chained up, being cold being dark being alone. All of that, on top of her previous memory being of being crushed and asphyxiated and abandoned. All things said, she wasn't entirely 'there' anymore. She hadn't even noticed the container beginning to drop. She did continue to flail as it fell, mostly trying to dislodge whatever the hell it was from her throat.

As the container hits the water, though, the sudden jerk is enough to dislodge whatever it is from her throat- A hand full of shiney silver coins in excellent condition, other than being covered in throat juice. Rachel blinks looking at the coins.

Then she slips right out of her chains, not even wrenching them free- Just slipping right out. And immediately she's crouching, scooping up the coins quickly.

Old habits die hard.

Sam manages to hold onto the knife this time. Unfortunately, as she slams into the floor of the container as it meets the waves, this does not prove to be the best thing. In bracing for impact, the knife ends up in position to pierce into her left arm as the floor comes rushing back to meet her.

James gasps as he slams into the wall, surprised at his own strength, unsure where the sudden burst of effort came from. He only has a moment to think on it before the container falls; he tumbles about a bit, but he makes sure to keep hold of the old man as they're tossed about, doing his best to hold him to the wall even through the chaos. "...help over here!" He doesn't even look about, not wanting to give him even one more moment free to do whatever else it is he can do.

Daniel groans in a combination of pain and exasperation as his arms get wrenched by the sudden stop at the end of the thirty-foot fall. He decides to focus on struggling out of the loose cuff on his left wrist, trying to wriggle it forward enough so he can slip his wrist out of it. As he strains against the metal fastening, he turns to Sara. "Hey, help me out here- I can't get out of this!"

The container hit the water with a thunderous splash, and water immediately sprayed through the holes punched by the radiant man's earlier cane swings. As it bobbed back up, the water stopped gushing through the tear in the steel next to where Rachel had been imprisoned, but the hole in the bottom of the container was still spurting water up onto the floor with every toss upon the waves. The fact that the majority of them, all except Sara in fact, were somewhere in the back half of the container was responsible for the floor's downward slope towards that end; the imbalance helped the water seethe through the hole in the floor even faster. Outside, the rumbling of the great engines powering the ship that had carried them out to sea had grown louder and more urgent even before the steel box hit the water, and would now gradually grow distant.

Sara and Daniel had the comparatively gentlest experiences in the fall thanks to their respective relationships with Daniel's chains, though the moment of impact tore Sara's hands away from the chains and threw her to the floor of the container. It was in no way an incapacitating fall, however, and she was back on her feet by the time Daniel had his hand half-free of the loose cuff and asked for her help.

Samantha was a little too distracted by the fall to notice the position of her knife as she fell back to the steel floor. The realization flashed through her mind just as the point of the blade pierced her arm, and the hand gripping the knife clenched inexplicably shut around nothing as she tried to twist it away before it could do any real damage. She should have been far too late to avoid burying the knife in her forearm, but she must have lost her grip because she slammed into the floor without a knife, and only a dribble of blood from a minor puncture below her elbow to remember it by. She heard rattling against the corrugated floor behind her but when she looked there was no sign of the blade. The clatter had been that of their captor's cane tossing about.

James and their captor grappled through the fall, hurled against the wall next to Daniel then thrown back against the back wall with the impact. Holding fast to him helped James ensure the older man took the brunt of their impacts, but it also let him see how quickly the pain contorting his face gave way to pure, undistracted anger. By the time the container had steadied and begun to tilt, James' unexpected surge of strength had faded, and he could see in the other's eyes that he knew it. He had just gotten out his shout for assistance when the radiant man swung his right arm in a wide clockwise arc that smashed upward into James' arms, forced him to break his grip and left him exposed for a vicious and inhumanly strong low left hook to the ribs. James heard his own crack just as he'd heard the other's earlier, heard it more than he felt it, as he was further distracted by the force of the blow hurling him into the side of the container next to Daniel.

Rid of the librarian, the radiant man reached out towards the small naked woman scrabbling on the ground after the coins he'd so generously given her, but he did not move to attack her again. No, he had more important work to ensure was accomplished before he left.

Rachel's preposterously incidental escape had only just registered with her through her greedy, opportunistic grab for the ten valuable looking coins she had coughed up, when eight of the coins skittering over the floor of the listing container twirled impossibly up into the air, leaving her with only the two she already had in hand. Before she could seize on them anyway, the eight coins shot away in eight different directions with such speed and force that they tore through the walls, floor and ceiling of the container in eight nearly simultaneous bangs of shearing metal, leaving thin slots behind. A few seconds later, they began to shoot back into the container and again out the opposite side.

As the container tipped back and more and more punctures were made in the floor, seawater lapped up already to the calves of the man at the very back of the container. He closed his eyes and clenched his fist, and the speed of the coins perforating the steel walls of the container increased. While his intent seemed to be to accelerate their descent to all their watery graves, he wasn't making any effort either to hit or to avoid the five he intended to take with him. Incidental slashes from the edges of the coins would probably catch any who moved, and the coins seemed to make a point of swooping through the air in an arc that passed in front of him, creating a potentially deadly barrier cutting him off from the rest of them with the sheer frequency with which they hurtled through the container.

There was no word appropriate for the complex emotions that Rachel was facing. Especially as the coins began to punch through the sides of the container, though she made sure to keep a sure grip on the ones she had. After all, magic magnetic coins had to be worth something!

That was when she registered the man coming at her. No more was she bound to the side of the container--No, now she could actually put her skills to use! She raised her fists, sneering at the man. "C'mon, then. Ain't wanna be so hard wit'out yer sticky-stick, huh?"

As soon as she had the range, be it her moving towards him or vice versa, she'd plant her feet as best she could, pivot at the hips, rotate in the waist, and throw her left hook not at his face, but specifically at his lower jaw.

Wrenching the jaw is actually the best path to the knockout, after all.

Cringing on the floor, James can do little more than wrap his arms around himself, panting with pain from the man's blows against him. Doing his best to fight off the nausea brought about by both the pain and the tossing about of the room, he peers about where he's been tossed, eyes soon settling on the man's cane. He reaches for it with an unsteady hand, hissing through gritted teeth as the rising saltwater soaks his pajamas and chills him to the bone; at this point, his earlier hesitance is gone, and any weapon is better than none at all.

With the height difference between attacker and target offset by the increasing aftward list of the sinking container, Rachel's practiced swing cracked across the telekinetic's jaw with precision. Landing the blow came at some cost, however, as two of the coins forming his intermittent barrier sliced straight through her torso and out the other side, grazing a kidney and narrowly missing a lung. A third bounced off her temple without even breaking the skin, but it still imparted a sharp blow that felt as if she'd just been tagged with a ball peen hammer. Still, she moved with enough speed and dedication to land the blow perfectly before the terrible pain sank in.

The radiant man's eyes flew open as his jaw was rocked and he stagger-splashed into the side of the container Rachel had previously been chained to clutching at his head. While there was no doubt the blow had some positive effect for their situation, as the bulleting coins slowed in the air then plunked inert into the sloshing water, it didn't put the more-than-human man down as Rachel had hoped. While dazed, ultimately he just looked more mad.

James had to scramble partway up the increasing slope of the container floor in pursuit of the cane, but he was able to get hold of it without too much difficulty beyond the pain of his broken rib while Rachel had their captor reeling.

Without their controller's concentration, the coins no longer posed a threat, but their damage had been done. Water was spraying into the container not just up from the floor but from many of the slivers gouged in the back walls by the coins. The container's tilt was passing 30 degrees, and the cold sea water had risen past the knees of their captor, the furthest to the back. Additionally, while Daniel's left hand finally pulled free of its cuff, blood now welled beneath long, thin tears in his clothing at his shoulder and stomach, and his midsection seized as a horrible, stinging pain flooded his abdomen.

While the old man occupies himself with Rachel, James had planned to try striking out at him with his cane, hoping that its power wasn't entirely his own but that the cane held something as well. As the container shifts, though, he finds it hard enough to simply keep his footing, especially with the pain still pressing through his chest. Stumbling back against the far wall, he happens to notice Daniel's state. He tries to help him to free his other hand while looking for the source of the wounds, seeing if it's anything that could be quickly bandaged. Calling out above the rushing of the water, he winces against the salt water spray. "What happened? Are you all right?"

As her head clears from the impact, Samantha realizes that the knife is gone. Somehow, the knife is gone, and with it the desire to attack the old man. Fortunately, someone else has been kind enough to do that, and the tilt of the container, along with the water rushing in, is enough to make Samantha rethink her priorities. The container is not going to remain afloat much longer. The time to get out has arrived.

Sam scrambles for the door, and manages to reach it despite the slipperiness of the floor and its increasingly steep angle. For a moment, she glances back at the others. There is a moment of hesitation, in which she considers helping them with their enemy again.. but it quickly passes. Opening the door would be helpful too, and have the added benefit of making her one of the first to escape. She reaches for the handle to try and do just that.

Samantha braced herself as best she could in their chaotic, sloping environment against the left-hand door and tried to push it open but it would not budge in the least. While it was securely bolted, she could see and hear the right-hand door jittering in place next to it.

Despite James' hope, the cane was merely a tool for the empowered old man. While it definitely tingled in his grasp, it didn't respond to his thoughts in any way. It was just a long, solid stick with a heavy, pointed object at one end. That could still be of some use now that he'd gotten Daniel free of his last cuff.

While Rachel had their captor's ire, when he saw past her to Samantha struggling with the doors, he set his wrath aside to focus on the danger of their escape. Or rather, he decided to kill two birds with one stone. His foot lashed up out of the rising water and caught the already injured Rachel in the midsection. She felt a rush of energy in the instant he made contact that dulled the pain radiating from the coin punctures and impact quite nicely, but she didn't have much time to appreciate the relief as she hurtled 16 feet through the air and slammed into Samantha's back, slamming her against the bolted door.

One positive development, as the radiant man stalked forward in the container, was that the redistribution of weight was helping to balance the container, though it still favored the back. A less positive one was that, even though nearly righted, water was still streaming in the coin-punched slots almost six feet up the walls.

With all of them free, Sara was unfortunately left to focus on the very real situation of the surprisingly durable older man who was quite clearly doing his best to sink the container before any of them could break free. It was inconceivable to her - what had they done to make him so intent on their demise that he would be willing to drown himself in the process? The dreadful thought that he was possibly incapable of drowning beneath the waves flashed through her mind.

The idea in her mind seemed to draw her body into an almost reactionary response, sloshing through the water toward the man's back to try and stomp out the back of his knees. There was only one way to see if he could drown, after all.

The radiant man's attention being fixed on the pile-up of Rachel and Samantha, and the doors it seemed he intended to keep secured, Sara was able to capitalize on his distraction with ease. As his knees buckled she dragged him down into the water, high enough now to nearly fully submerge him, and grabbed for the back of his head to try to keep it under.

For a moment he seemed to genuinely panic, thrashing about in search of his bearings like any being who found itself suddenly submerged against its will. The water churned beside his head as he yelled his outrage into it, and the thrashing subsided as he braced his hands and feet against the floor. He pushed up forcefully and dumped Sara into the water behind him, and took a moment to cough up seawater and catch his breath.

Once Daniel's freed, James snaps his gaze over at the sight of Rachel nearly flying across the room to slam into Samantha. He heads over to the two, trying to help them both get their footing again while Sara distracts the old man. Once they're at least somewhat stable, he starts aiding Samantha with the doors, trying to use the cane as a lever to help get them open. He scowls at the sight of Sara's attack failing, and nods his head back towards the two as he forces his weight against the cane. "Someone...ugh...help her!"

"You've got to be fucking kidding me." After Daniel's been freed, he wastes no time in bitching about his (rather grievous) wounds, which are in turn wasting no time in spewing out as much of his blood as they can manage.

He staggers forward and groans, holding onto his sides. "Where's the knife! Who has it?!" His eyes dart left and right, desperately searching for the lost weapon as he struggles to ignore the searing pain coming from the change embedded in his abdomen.

The person best able to answer Daniel's question, albeit with an 'I don't know,' fails to hear him, due to being preoccupied with recovering from a rough trip to the floor and having a small person on top of her. She flails with little actual coordination to her efforts. A gasp brings seawater into her lungs, leading to further flailing.

The cane helped considerably, easily wedging between the doors to help lever them apart, but as soon as the unbolted right door pushed out, water reaching almost to James' shoulders began to rush in through the opening. He would soon have to choose between holding onto the cane or keeping himself upright.

The sudden rush of water from above was of no help to Samantha whatsoever.

Their captor turned, his shining eyes narrowing as he glared at Sara. They flicked to Daniel, who was splashing weakly around in a fruitless search for Virgil's blade with a growing red cloud of blood thinning out through the water around him. A cold smile curled the radiant man's thin lips and he looked back to Sara. "I hope you remember, in what few fluke snatches of consciousness you achieve from now until your oceans boil and the star that birthed you swallows the dead husk of this world whole: you wasted one of your final breaths in prayer to me."

He raised a glowing hand and James felt the cane lurch in his hands, trying to return to its owner, adding a new wrinkle to the choice he had to make.

Alright, this was getting completely ridiculous.

That was running through the mind of someone who's (FORMER!) best friend thought that mesh was a 'business casual' design.

With a horribly shrill scream, Rachel scrambled to her feet, once again tackling the glowing man and using her lower center of gravity to her advantage, before continuing an adrenaline and rage fueled pummeling spree with one hand and, assuming she gets him down, holding him beneath the water with the other.

With the weight now off of her, Samantha manages to grab on to the latch of the door not being held open by James and raise herself above the water rushing in. The next few moments are spent trying to gasp for breath and violently cough up the water inhaled.
