The container hit the water with a thunderous splash, and water immediately sprayed through the holes punched by the radiant man's earlier cane swings. As it bobbed back up, the water stopped gushing through the tear in the steel next to where Rachel had been imprisoned, but the hole in the bottom of the container was still spurting water up onto the floor with every toss upon the waves. The fact that the majority of them, all except Sara in fact, were somewhere in the back half of the container was responsible for the floor's downward slope towards that end; the imbalance helped the water seethe through the hole in the floor even faster. Outside, the rumbling of the great engines powering the ship that had carried them out to sea had grown louder and more urgent even before the steel box hit the water, and would now gradually grow distant.
Sara and Daniel had the comparatively gentlest experiences in the fall thanks to their respective relationships with Daniel's chains, though the moment of impact tore Sara's hands away from the chains and threw her to the floor of the container. It was in no way an incapacitating fall, however, and she was back on her feet by the time Daniel had his hand half-free of the loose cuff and asked for her help.
Samantha was a little too distracted by the fall to notice the position of her knife as she fell back to the steel floor. The realization flashed through her mind just as the point of the blade pierced her arm, and the hand gripping the knife clenched inexplicably shut around nothing as she tried to twist it away before it could do any real damage. She should have been far too late to avoid burying the knife in her forearm, but she must have lost her grip because she slammed into the floor without a knife, and only a dribble of blood from a minor puncture below her elbow to remember it by. She heard rattling against the corrugated floor behind her but when she looked there was no sign of the blade. The clatter had been that of their captor's cane tossing about.
James and their captor grappled through the fall, hurled against the wall next to Daniel then thrown back against the back wall with the impact. Holding fast to him helped James ensure the older man took the brunt of their impacts, but it also let him see how quickly the pain contorting his face gave way to pure, undistracted anger. By the time the container had steadied and begun to tilt, James' unexpected surge of strength had faded, and he could see in the other's eyes that he knew it. He had just gotten out his shout for assistance when the radiant man swung his right arm in a wide clockwise arc that smashed upward into James' arms, forced him to break his grip and left him exposed for a vicious and inhumanly strong low left hook to the ribs. James heard his own crack just as he'd heard the other's earlier, heard it more than he felt it, as he was further distracted by the force of the blow hurling him into the side of the container next to Daniel.
Rid of the librarian, the radiant man reached out towards the small naked woman scrabbling on the ground after the coins he'd so generously given her, but he did not move to attack her again. No, he had more important work to ensure was accomplished before he left.
Rachel's preposterously incidental escape had only just registered with her through her greedy, opportunistic grab for the ten valuable looking coins she had coughed up, when eight of the coins skittering over the floor of the listing container twirled impossibly up into the air, leaving her with only the two she already had in hand. Before she could seize on them anyway, the eight coins shot away in eight different directions with such speed and force that they tore through the walls, floor and ceiling of the container in eight nearly simultaneous bangs of shearing metal, leaving thin slots behind. A few seconds later, they began to shoot back into the container and again out the opposite side.
As the container tipped back and more and more punctures were made in the floor, seawater lapped up already to the calves of the man at the very back of the container. He closed his eyes and clenched his fist, and the speed of the coins perforating the steel walls of the container increased. While his intent seemed to be to accelerate their descent to all their watery graves, he wasn't making any effort either to hit or to avoid the five he intended to take with him. Incidental slashes from the edges of the coins would probably catch any who moved, and the coins seemed to make a point of swooping through the air in an arc that passed in front of him, creating a potentially deadly barrier cutting him off from the rest of them with the sheer frequency with which they hurtled through the container.
