Dark Heresy -- (Incoming) Purge the Xenos -- Zuriel Titus

Unread postby InquisitorChris » Mon Jan 24, 2011 1:47 pm

This space to be devoted to the new character (it was going to be two new characters, but what can you do) for the Dark Heresy Purge the Xenos campaign. It will be some time before the character links up with the main group, so until that time his segment of the adventure will be run here.

Zuriel Titus, hardened survivor of the dread Mara Landing Massacre and recently inducted Acolyte of Inquisitor Sholmes Hirlock (Order Hereticus), is onboard the charter merchant vessel Folly's Reward en route to the Inquisitor's island estate on the ocean world of Spectoris. It has been some time since he last heard from Inquisitor Hirlock, and is progressing to the planet in order to hold his first official meeting with the Inquisitor.

Titus' quarters are spartan and cramped. The room is 4 meters by 4 meters and contains but a bed and table.

In the evening, about a week from arrival at Spectoris, Titus is doing whatever he does in the evening in his cabin when there is a knock at the door. "Thunk, thunk!"

Zuriel was a man of few words.

"A message from Zuriel Titus," says a woman's voice. "From the captain's deck."

(Note that getting a message from the captain's deck (that is, very very high up) is quite rare for a run-of-the-mill passenger on a starship.)

"Ah, yes I will be right out!"
Zuriel opens the door with great excitement and ears wide open.
"Yes ma'am, I am listening"

Behind the door stands a tall, gaunt woman -- tall and gaunt like most of those who have been born and lived their lives plying the ways between the stars -- in her 30s. She is wearing the uniform of the ship's officer class.

In her hand she holds a long metal rod bearing the insignia of the ship's Captain -- a feline face gripping a sack of gold between its teeth. At her side is a holstered pistol.

Behind her stands a bulky figure -- bulky by Void-Born standards, that is, not as bulky as you, but quite a bit taller -- clad head to foot in boarding armor bearing the insignia of the ship's armsmen. Presumably it is a man based on size and build, but it's too be sure through the faceplate. Another pistol is holstered by his side, with a cutlass hanging from the other. More imposing is the large shotgun he is carrying in his hands.

Presumably, he is her escort. The officer class doesn't seem to feel very safe coming down here among the passengers.

The woman stops for a moment, pulling a data-slate from out of her uniform's pockets and comparing your face with the image and the screen.

"There is an urgent request for you to be seen above," she says smartly, in Low Gothic heavily accented with the ship's dialect.

"How soon am I expected?" Zuriel asked with excitment. While cautiously watching the escort out of the corner of his eye. "I am ready when you are."

They lead you through the twisting, cramped corridors of the ship -- a small vessel, with only ten thousand or so crew -- the woman holding the sigil of the captain's office up before her. When they catch sight of it, people make way, pulling back into doors and side corridors, muttering among themselves. Neither the woman or her escort speak.

After some time of travelling through corridors, a security checkpoint, a lengthy elevator ride, followed by another security checkpoint, you emerge Updeck, as you have gathered the people on this vessel call it. Up here, the corridors are wider, lighting is everywhere, ducts are concealed and do not blow random blasts of hot steam upon passersby, and the feline head with the sack of gold in its mouth is prominently featured everywhere as a wall decoration.

In the seclusion of this more rarefied atmosphere, the woman finally addresses you. She seems much more relaxed up here.

"The captain would like to see you," she says. "She is waiting beyond the door, in the conference room." She makes a waving gesture at one of the doors to the side, which opens.

Zuriel clears his throat, stands straight, then begins to walk towards the opened door. As he approaches the door, he noticed a woman in the room.
"Captain, you wish to see me?" he says with a slight bow. At which point, he begins to stand straight again at-ease awaiting the captains response.

<<ooc>> You don't notice a woman in the room unless I say you notice a woman in the room! Please don't preempt my GMing. ;) <<ooc>>

You do indeed see a woman in the room; tall and then (she is Void Born after all), late 60s by appearance, looking rather dignified in her captain's uniform covered with medals, insignia, and sigils.

To her side stands a thin man in a robe. He has no eyes, simply empty eye sockets. (This is almost certainly the first time you have ever come anywhere near either a ship's captain or an astropath.)

The door closes behind you.

The woman bows toward you. The man looks straight in your direction, which is unnerving given his lack of eyes.

"Captain Eloi Mirahim of the Chartist Vessel Folly's Reward is honored to learn that there is a representative of the Holy Ordos onboard her vessel. Despite any inconvenience it might be calling."

"Astropath Croa Soul-Bound here has received an urgent message for you. I assume you would like to hear it."

(Note: Zuriel can't read, so I was forced to do this rather than simply have him read off a transcipt.)

The captain speaks again.

"It is a great honor to have a representative of the Holy Ordos aboard my vessel. I am also very honored to fulfill the request of the Hoky Inquisition to divert my ship from its scheduled destination for the sake of transporting one person, which will cost me and my house thousands of Thrones."

"Astropath Azoth, please relay the message."

The Astropath steps forward and speaks mechanically and emotionlessly, presumably reciting from memory.

"Priority message for my Acolyte Zuriel Titus on the authority of My high office, Inquisitor of the Holy Ordos Sholmes Hirlock, Ordo Hereticus.

The ship you are on is being diverted to a new destination --"

Here, the Captain audibly groans.

"-- the planet of Famine, capital city of Harvest. You are to make contact with cell already at location. The Prime is Brother-Initiate Leveticus. Group is undercover as pilgrims. Your experiences at X will be of value. Make contact and join group."

"Adeptus Mechanicus has expressed concern. The name Elias Marthor may be of importance."

"On My Holy Authority. His Will Be Done."

The Astropath ceases speaking for a moment, and then,

"Transmission Ended"

Zuriel understands the message.
"Thank you for relaying the message, astropath"
Zuriel looks back at the captian. "Captain, I must apologize for this extream inconvenience, but if you have any issues with the decision made, I'm sure the inqusistion would like to hear you out...", he says with a slight smile.
"Is their anything else, or may I be exused to return to my quarters? I would like to be notifed when we are about to arrive at the planet if its not too much trouble." he says to the captain.

"You may do as you wish," the captain replies. "I appreciate your assurances as to the Inquisition's generosity. May you not be devoured by a Ghilliam."

You get the feeling she may be being sarcastic.

(So, you have about a week's worth of gametime before you arrive on the planet. Do you want to do anything particular during that period -- look for rumors, try to buy equipment, or whatever?)

(PS. There is a note near the very end of the OOC thread you should read as it concerns Zuriel.)

Keep in mind that Imperial ships are floating cities (really towns -- this one has a population of 10,000). You're on a passenger deck for regular passengers, of which there are maybe 50, as opposed to ship natives or higher-status passengers. Accomodations are spartan. There's a measure of crime in the halls as less savory elements of the ship's natives try to prey on the naive passengers, and some of the passengers themselves are probably pretty disreputable. There are some stores and some facilities for entertainment, mainly bars and religious shrines. The halls are very lightly patrolled by the ship's armsmen -- it seems they're not too concerned about what goes on down here.

Passengers aren't really allowed to leave the passenger areas normally. Since you're a member of the Ordos you could officially go anywhere you want, but since you don't have any ID declaring you as such, since only the captain and astropath and maybe some high-ranking other crew members know that you are a member, and since you probably don't want to draw attention to that fact, that's probably not a good idea.

Basically I'm asking if you want to ask around for rumors (since you have never heard of this planet Famine you are going to) or look for any equipment you may want to buy. If so, I will abstract the process by using Inquiry rolls. (Your Fellowship is not exactly wonderful and you don't have Inquiry [or Barter] at the Trained level, however, so your chances are not wonderful.)

Or alternatively you can spend the time in your quarters cleaning your weapons and praying, your nights tormented by memories of the Mara catastrophe.

In order to speed things up, I'm going to abstract this whole process by making an Inquiry roll. Do you want to look for any equipment as well?

PS. A couple of new characters are going to be coming onboard in a day or two, who I will insert into this thread.

What in particular? Whether an item can be found is based on an Inquiry test modified by the rarity of the item. Then there's the problem of affording it.

OK. I'll resolve this when the destination is arrived at. For now, I'll wait until the two new characters come on board, which should be tomorrow or the day after I think. They're both very experienced roleplayers who know the setting well, so I think they should help you get used to this whole process.

OK! We're ready to go.

First, just a preliminary note about how I run things and my everpresent spoilers. Ah, the spoiler. I use a lot of these. Why?

Because they serve as a means to easily, in the course of a post, let a player know something that only his character would be aware of, usually because he or she has made an Awareness or Lore Test.

I will write "Spoiler for Character X" and then stick whatever that something is in the spoiler.

So obviously I would greatly prefer it if you NOT READ SPOILERS MEANT FOR OTHER PEOPLE and, if quoting my post, be careful to leave spoilered information out of it. You might think that I would have no way of knowing if you cheat, and even if you did would have no way of enforcing it, but if you do you will be punished by Khorne. So don't do it.

As an example, let's say Zuriel, Sebaztion, and Akinya walk into a bar (drumroll please) (go ahead and read all the spoilers below, this is just an illustration). I might say something like:

You walk into the bar. The air reeks of lho-smoke. Electronic music pulses through the air. At the bar are seated a priest, a rabbi, a traveling salesman with some kind of machine next to him, and a farmer's daughter.

Spoiler for Zuriel:

Spoiler:
An Awareness Test with 1 Degree of Success tells you that the traveling saleman and farmer's daughter have lots of hay on their clothes.

Spoiler for Akinya:

Spoiler:
A successful Very Easy (+30) Common Lore (Tech) Test made with 2 Degrees of Success tells you that the machine sitting next to the traveling salesman is a cleaning device that operates by suction. Also, a Hard (-20) Common Lore (Machine Cult Test) tells you that the cleaning device does not conform to any of the standard STC patterns approved by the Mechanicus. Perhaps he is a tech-heretic?

Spoiler for Sebaztion:
Spoiler:
A successful Very Hard (-30) Common Lore (Imperium) Test with no Degrees of Success tells you that the priest and the rabbi do not appear to be wearing the clothes of any branch of the Ecclesiarchy operating in the Calixis Sector. Heresy?

See? Simple.

Now that everybody is here, we'll start.

Folly's Reward is a few days from arrival at Famine. Zuriel has been spending his time hanging around the bars and looking for gear (which I will roll for later). The ship's corridors have been all abuzz with rumors and vituperative complaints about the ship's having changed course for some unknown reason. One afternoon Zuriel is getting ready to go out and opens the door. Standing there are two people...

So, go ahead and describe yourselves and start playing!

Spoiler for Sebaztion and Akinya (a real spoiler this time, don't read it Zuriel!):

Spoiler:
You two are in a position to know just about anything you want in the way of general knowledge about the planet you're going to. Give me a day and I'll write you a longish letter about it.

Akinya is at first glance an unassuming figure wrapped in finely woven robes of deepest red, it is only on closer inspection that her calling in life becomes more apparent. Worked upon the breast of her garment is the manifest icon of the Adeptus Mechanicus; the skull and cogwheel symbol marking her as a Priestess of Mars. Unlike many tech-priests the lithe form concealed beneath her clothing is relatively humanoid in appearance - with only a few manifestations of her faith visible to the naked, or untrained, eye. Her stance is casual, her hands laced together within the deep cuffs of her robes, but utterly unmoving. Only the faintest rustle of her darkly shadowed hood betrays the fact that she is indeed breathing and not merely a servitor malfunctioning in the corridor.

As the door hisses open she purposefully raises dark hands interlaced with complex geometric patterning which glow a faint emerald green and slowly pushes back the heavy material which had previously obscured her face. As her form would already attest her features are distinctly feminine, and perhaps would have at one time been considered attractive. Her cheekbones are high in a sculpted face the color of polished mahogany, vivid green eyes stare out from beneath arching brows of raven black. Her hair is also black, thick, and in parts braided across her skull to form a complicated knot at the base of her neck just behind her left ear. Almost, but not quite enough, to obscure the silver, copper, and bronze wires which coalesce there.

"Is this he?" Her voice is soft, monotonous, and emanates from an intricate grille of aged silver which curls in a half diamond where her mouth used to rest. Though spoken at just above a whisper her words are perfectly audible and surprisingly organic, as though they had not been articulated by a mechanical device.

For confirmation she glances at the man standing at her shoulder.

Standing a half-step behind the robe-clad priestess of the Mechanicus is a short, dandyesque man dressed in an utterly impractical outfit which betrays the sense of grandeur with which it was selected; a stylized pattern of what its wearer thinks a proper 'adventurer' ought to array himself in, the effect is instead merely that of an inexperienced amateur in a gaudy costume. 'Rugged', while aimed for, is perhaps not the first word that would come to mind, there being far too much silk and ruffle. The man, the minor lordling Sebaztien Francisko Allemande Paullaric deVolpa, the III, as he will casually inform you if asked, has been pointedly ignoring his companion for several minutes now, and has only been reminded of her reality (she really could be mistaken for a servitor, he muses absent-mindedly) by the questioning tone of her voice. Trained decades ago to pay as much attention to the tone of a conversation as its content, deVolpa's Malfian mind rapidly reorients to focus on the conversation (such as it is), running through years' worth of mneumonically-implanted rhetorical techniques designed to minimize social faux pas and allow for minimal opportunity for eliciting offense in the ignored party. Indeed, in the vaunted halls of Malfi's upper society, fortunes and houses have risen and fallen on a missed word and a carefully worded pleasantry.
Thus, with reluctance Sebaztien shifts his attention from his magnificiently manicured mustache and bestows it on his companion (the left curl will have to be re-spooled, he decides with a lingering thought as he steps back from the faintly reflective panel built into the corridor wall - surely, its ritualized schematics must have some import to the numerous menials and mechanicus fops running about, he reasons; for now, it has at least served some -useful- purpose.) Blinking with a carefully constructed expression of pleasant surprise and cheerful agreement, deVolpa's manicured tones ring out in a charming tenor.
"I certainly hope so, my dear; we have been searching far long enough already, and while I have -absolute- faith in your ability to navigate the interior of our venerable conveyance, I think it is high past the hour our traveling companion was located." Directing glittering green eyes towards the figure standing in the doorway, Sebaztien assumes one of his more heroic stances, hands placed on hips clad in fine-tanned Brontine leather, and with a winning smile queries of his invisible, rhetorical entourage "And who do we have here?"

Zuriel, The kind of young man that experienced hell and back again, twice. A small boy, growing up in Volg not knowing what future is in store for him. Trying to do whatever possible to escape the horrific city from what looks like a giant scab from the air; always wanting to look beyond the crusty dome above the city. Once he got the chance to join the many guardsmen heading to patrol Mara, a terrible accident took place. The despicable horror that no man should ever dare see, nor ever speak of. He manged to recover enough to be placed back into service, but he will never be the same again...

He only speaks what needs to be spoken anymore. Always thinking about Mara, and somtimes dreams about it. He tries to sleep, but usally wakes up in a sweat, and out of breath.

Zuriel's choppy, uneven, brown hair almost covers his eyes. He has a small black studded ear ring. His brown eyes, usally bloodshot from the sleepless nights.

As Zuriel is standing there noticing the two figures, he starts to get a little cautious. He quickly examines them noticing key features about them, not recognizing them at all. He places a firm grip on the door as he keeps it open; taking no chances in this kind of environment. He clears his throut, and in a low crackling voice he ask, "you two dont look like the usuall folk that I have encountered here. Is there anything I can help you with?", still keeping a close eye on where their hands are.

With shining (no doubt, dyed) pearly teeth gleaming from under his curling mustache, deVolpa moves to quickly enforce his command of the situation with carefully accented rhetorical flourishes, expressing just the right amount of impatience and dissatisfaction to buy him a place on the moral high-ground. "I sincerely hope so, my good man; I very much do. You see, we've been searching some time now, and, - correct me if I speak out of place, my dear," he adds in an aside to Akinya, "I think I speak for both of us when I say we would deeply appreciate learning your...appraisal of the present situation. You see," he adds, stepping out into the hall and turning his back on the sleepless-looking figure in the doorway, confidently presuming he will be followed "it seems we share a common destination - or, so I have been told - and perhaps even a common end. Regrettably, I have been sequestered in my quarters reviewing my field notes from previous expeditions" (this he adds with a world-wise smirk and a carefully timed adjusting of the jacket of his expeditionary get-up) "and have been quite unable to learn anything beyond the most general details of our destination - to say little of the status of the recovery efforts thus far." With feigned embarassment, he adds looking over his shoulder "I hate to admit it, but I do not even know how much longer we will be in transit; I find this stifling recyled air altogether too -stale- for my tastes. We were hoping, perhaps, you could enlighten us."

With an infinitesimal dip of her chin in Sebaztien's direction she accedes to his offhand comment without question - her wishes in line with his assumption for the moment if not the manner in which they were presented. Akinya, by both birth and manufacture, is a patient creature bordering on the dispassionate a good percentage of the time when her keen mind is not actively engaged; preferring to observe and appraise situations rather than participate in them. However, as she has increasingly found while in the lordling's presence, the man lacked a measure of common sense which she found depressing at best, alarming at worst. A week in his company had convinced her that while possessed of an intellect to rival her own, his neocortex was severely deficient in this regard and needed a cortex implant installed as soon as they reached a suitable medicae facility.

"It would be wiser to discuss this in private." She stated flatly, not even turning her head to give Sebaztien her full attention as she spoke, her regard almost entirely on the haggard man who stood before her. Noting that his own eyes had marked the positioning of her hands she returned them to within the folds of her robes with a quiet swish of fabric on fabric. "We do not wish to draw undue attention to ourselves at this junction of our affairs."

"May we enter?" Despite the words having been phrased as a question her tone brooked little argument, though out of some sense of courtesy buried deep within the labyrinth of her only partially organic mind she refrained from moving him from the doorway physically. "Rest assured that had we wanted you dead you would have been so 25.4 seconds ago when the door opened and not wasted time on... pleasantries." It did not occur to her that this was probably no comfort at all.

Zuriel plainly looks at Akinya, then smirks slightly at the comment she has given him. As if he liked the spunkiness a little too much. After a comment like that, he realizes that these people mean business and request private conference with him.

"Please, come in. We can discuss more...pleasantries inside", he said with a continuing smirk.

Zuriel's cabin is small and spartan with, just a small table and uncomfortable-looking cot (I am assuming the Noble Born and Tech-Priest have been staying in more luxurious quarters -- for which I will not require you to pay -- elsewhere somewhere more prestigious and safer in the ship). In one corner a lasgun and sword lean against the wall; a lasgun with a sight attached and a knife on the table. Through the open door of the tiny closet can be seen a set of Guard flak armor and a travelling case.

(This is my mental image of Zuriel's mode of life; correct me if I'm wrong.)

The door shuts behind you.

"Make yourselves at home. It isnt much, but I try to make the best of it."
"Now I believe that this room is secure enough for us to talk. You were saying?"

Concealing his displeasure at being wrong about the conversational discreteness of the corridor - and worse, corrected publically - Sebaztien turns on his heel and enters Zuriel's small, cold chamber as if it had been his idea all along. He looks toward the bed for a moment, considering throwing himself down in a languid disarray, cat-like, to express his dominance - but thinks better of it after a cursory looking-over. Instead, after just a moment's akward pause, he folds his hands behind his back, and puffs his chest to assume a more regal bearing.
With due pomp and gravity, Sebaztien begins to elucidate the situation, explaining his and the tech priestess's authority, intent to join the ongoing 'recovery efforts' of "Mr. Hirlocke," and the situation as he has it thus far - including their supposed commonality of intent with Mr. Titus.
"Well there you have it, my good...man," concludes deVolpa with a quick once over of Titus' frame. "I believe we've been meant to collaborate. Is there anything you can add to further illuminate the situation? We've been quite cooped up since we boarded the ship; elsewise, all that's left is to await arrival."

(ooc: GM, I'm presuming that indirect dialogue like this is alright in your system?)

It's fine. Once you actually get into a combat or other pivotal situation though it would be better if you not broadcast your intentions to other players (e.g., "Sebaztion really hoped that Juriel would tell the ganger such-and-such").

Following at a sedate pace Akinya positioned herself unobtrusively, or as best she could in a space this enclosed, beside the cot and listened quietly to Sebaztien's recount of events thus far as they have been presented to them. Truly they had little information to build a decent foundation for an investigation on and she chaffed at being so ignorant of the goings on in which she would shortly find herself. Her own discomfort manifested only as the slightest tightening of her long fingers where they lay wrapped around her wrists, having long ago made a conscious decision to quell the more human side of her nature which was ruled by emotion. Though, truly, it was difficult at times; especially when faced with so frustrating a matter as this.

"The... artifact in question is of particular interest to us, should you have received any additional illumination from your own master regarding it." She said softly, her bright gaze flickering from Sebaztien, whom she had been observing in a restrained manner - taking particular note of his concealed reaction to her interference with interest and marking it for further study - back to Zuriel.

(ooc Seb: I'm assuming you included introductions in that recap dear.)

"With the time I have been on this ship, I have spoken to the captain regarding this mission. The discription is very basic from what I herd. Im sure from even in the higher classes of the ship, people must be talking about the course change. Our destination is Famine, Capital city of Harvest. None of the passengers on this ship shouldn't know about why the ship is going there, so maybe its best we keep this under the table to try and avoid any unrest with the passengers for our sakes."

"An Astropath relied a message to me to meet with a Brother-Initiate Leveticus. He must be part of a group already at Famine investigating. I am hoping he has more information for us. Also the name Elias Marthor may be important to our mission."

<ooc> So i am assuming they do now know about the above messages when I was with the captain alone, so this should catch them up? forgive me if I am wrong. </ooc>

"Do you two know anything about the planet we are going to? If not, then maybe asking around could be an idea. Maybe someone on board "knows" Leveticus and where to make contact?

"The planet itself, yes." Akinya replied with a slow nod of her sharp chin. "It is a gaian type world with a modest population - around 30 million by last Administratum census record with minimal Adeptus presence on the whole. An oligarchy making up the primary form of government; reasonable considering their primary tithe consists of agriculture manufacture; and that being minimal at best."

She pauses, her head tilting at a peculiar angle, almost avian like as she considers. "As for contacting your cell, I would have assumed that your Master left you instructions before you departed. We have received no information regarding the remainder of this... team. You were our designated contact, there were no others specified. The probability of any of the other... passengers knowing of this Brother-Initiate Leveticus is slim at best, and I recommend against using his name too liberally. When we land we can make better progress once we have access to the dat-network."

(ooc: You've referenced your meeting with the captain so we'll assume you gave us a more in detail report of that transaction, saves you some typing.)
