Gunner cursed as he was forced to take cover or be shot to pieces. Well, nothing but to try again now that some of them had most likely been gunned down. This time, though, he had a better idea.

"Masha, underside of the back rightside balcony. Fire with me on three-"

He silently prayed a short prayer to the emperor that this would work properly. He wanted to bring the balcony down on top of their last two assailants on this floor, and take out their friends upstairs at the same time. Without knowing the construction of the building, it was hard to say how well that would work... but if two bolt rounds wouldn't do it, it was hard to say what would.

(aiming for the ceiling beneath H8 and H9.)

Cryvus, for his part, sought to undermine the enemy's coherency. Rather more cautiously than he had the last time, he reached out to plant the seed of an idea in an enemy's mind.

"Beneath the thunder of the vasty deep, the kraken sleeps," he whispered.

(Touch of madness, fettered, on H8)

Perhaps it was Cryvus erring on the side of caution that caused his powers to fail at that moment. The warp refused to do his bidding, though he suffered no ill effects on account of this. The stormtroopers inside the church turned their guns upwards and fired, scoring a few glancing hits and searing holes in the stonework but failing to kill any of their assailants. Mikolas' threat was lost amidst the sound of gunfire, his own barely aimed shot doing little more than making his opponents flinch. The clatter of a can next to the two men on the ground floor caused them to duck and cover, though Mithras was too busy keeping his head down to see this for himself.

Masha gave Gunner a nod and the two of them stepped out from cover in unison, each firing a pair bolts at their intended target. The stonework beneath the men didn't do much give way as disintegrate, showering the enemy below with rubble and dropping their allies onto them. Neither of the two men who'd fallen rose, nor did the man they'd landed on, all three either lying still or writhing and screaming in response to broken bones. Fire poured down on Mithras' position from above but the stormtroopers around him seemed emboldened now, trusting in their own armour in spite of the manstopper rounds taking chunks out of the floor around them. Mithras lacked such impressive armour and decided to not press his luck.

(Map updated, and the 2nd floor is as well. Cryvus rolls abysmally on his manifestation check, Mikolas and Gunner ensure the heretics on the ground floor keep their heads down and Gunner shows everyone why bolt weaponry is awesome, dropping H8 and H9 onto H5 and taking all three out. Only Mithras is still pinned at this point.)

Gunner tried not to smile too much as he heard the sudden screams, stopped short with a pair of loud thuds. They were in the middle of a fire fight, and he needed to focus, but sometimes it's hard not to be just a bit pleased with yourself. He did what he could to prepare himself, and ran in. He meant to run in and snap off a shot at the heretics on the upper floor on the left side before ducking behind some pews. Even if he didn't actually hit them, the damage to the balcony might prove just as useful. Provided, of course, that he didn't get himself shot in the attempt.

(run in, fire roughly in the direction of H10 and 11, and then dive behind the pews on the left side if there's time- the ones on the right seem to all be taken.)

Mik slipped inside, basking in the dust and noise like an aquatic predator in its natural environment, and simply prepared to fill whatever poked itself through the holes in the ceilings with shot.

Cryvus moved up to the door, sighting in on the last remaining person on the ground floor and firing. Theoretically, they wanted prisoners, but he'd take his chances on salvaging some of the wounded.

Deciding that, for the moment, danger wasn't nearly as close as it had been moments ago, Mithras attempted to gather his courage and look over the cover he was behind before getting up, boltpistol still ready in his hands.

Seeing the destruction wraught by a few well-placed shells, he urged the others on, waiting in those outside, "There may be more upstairs. We need grenades up those stairwells, flashes!" he grinned at the others, being in his element now Mithras felt, for the first time perhaps, that he enjoyed this. Long ago, far too long ago, it had been about survival, about impossible odds. But it had never been him, that had been at fault. He had merely done what he could at the moment.

And by the Emperor, he was doing it now, too!

The surviving stormtroopers kept pouring lasfire onto the enemy. Julius yelled something incoherent as he scrambled for cover, his words muffled by his helmet and lost in the din of battle. One of the men above them screamed and fell backwards, his arm severed at the elbow. Cryvus focused on the man on the ground floor, but he was keeping his head down. The pews were taking punishment in his place, as were the prone bodies of those who fell. One man tried to rise only for a stray shot to strike him in the small of his back. Eventually it became too much for the cowering shooter. He broke and ran, rushing towards the back of the church and the stairs there.

The flash grenade detonated in his face. There hadn't been any reinforcements on the way but Mithras' call had worked out well enough. Mikolas moved into the church, shotgun barking once and pitching the stunned man off his feet. Gunner took the opportunity to charge into the room as Masha reloaded her compact bolt pistol. His own weapon fired once as he threw himself towards cover, landing roughly next to the legless corpse of a stormtrooper. He didn't see the results of his shot, but everyone else did; the bolt punched through the stonework, into the leg of his target and detonated spectacularly.

It took everyone a moment to realise that the shooting had stopped. The stormtroopers rushed over to the man Mikolas had punched off his feet and restrained him, pressing the burning hot barrel of a hellgun into the back of his neck. The church had been devastated in under a minute; broken stonework was scattered everywhere, pews had been chewed apart by gunfire and dead a dozen men had been left dead. The pulpit at the back of the church hadn't survived intact either, though the sign of the aquila hung above it had managed to emerge unscathed.

(Maps updated. Three stormtroopers are dead, but so are nearly a dozen heretics. You have one stunned prisoner. Gunner has two shots remaining in his Mauler, Mithras has 4 in his bolt pistol and Cryvus and Mikolas have plenty of ammo in their respective weapons. Combat is over for now.)

When he realised that the shooting had suddenly stopped, Gunner raised his head to survey the damage. Not a bad strike. The casualties on their side were regrettable, but hardly unexpected. They had also definitely done well to only lose those three men. He reloaded his mauler while he spoke.

"Julius, take your men and make sure the area's secure. Mithras, you want to handle this one too? You handled our last heretic real nicely."

"You cannot defeat fate with scaffolding," Cryvus observed, checking the dead on first his own side and then the enemy's to see if they really were gone or if anything could yet be done for them.

Mithras looked over the ruins of the church with a deep frown on his brow... until he saw the hanging Aquila, and a soft smile spread on his face as he did the sign of Aquila in return.

Then Gunner spoke to him, and the man's lips trembled for a fraction of a second before he nodded. "As... as you wish, absolutely. I will deal with the prisoner..." he gave Gunner a crisp salute before reloading his boltpistol, holstering it and stepping off towards the soldiers that kept the stunned man, nodding to them.

Mik coughed a bit at the dust and began stuffing shells from his gunbag into his weapon. It pays to be prepared.

He glanced at his squadmates, at the talk of the interrogation, but didn't speak up.

When the stunned man came around the first thing he saw was Mithras. He felt his wrath a moment later, the acolyte repeating his performance from the previous night in front of a much larger audience. The man wouldn't crack, however. He wouldn't even offer up a single detail. He'd mutter in response to questions, only to laugh or spit in Mithras' face when he was told to repeat himself more clearly. Mithras could go on like this for minutes but he didn't feel that he'd get anything out of this man if he continued on like this. There was defiance in his eyes, a stubbornness possessed by men who know that they are already and that they have nothing to gain by talking.

Cryvus inspected the dead. The stormtroopers were gone, their injuries too great. Those who had fallen from above may have survived had it not been for the fusillade of las-fire that ravaged the area where they'd fallen. It was the first time he or any of the other acolytes had a chance to observe the men properly, however. Each man wore stark white robes in keeping with the Joyous Choir's style but had hastily thrown a flak vest on over the top of them. Crisis and Masha had joined them inside, the former slipping from corpse to corpse, pillaging whatever suited his fancy. He hovered near a fallen stormtrooper for a moment, exchanging glances with Julius before thinking the better of it and stepping away.

The second team of stormtroopers reported in. They'd formed a perimeter around the church and were dealing with the local enforcers. The acolytes wouldn't be disturbed while they worked.

(Mithras' efforts have taken a few minutes, giving the rest of you time to search the ground floor of the church . There's enough autoguns lying around for you to grab and a fair few magazines of manstopper rounds to go with them. Aside from all the corpses and debris the church seems to be fairly normal. A little small perhaps, but mundane in every way. Excluding the clergy that tried to kill you on sight, of course. There are two stairwells at the back of the church, one leading up and the other leading down. If you wish to explore either let me know.)

Mik found a spot outside to hunker down and catch his breath, far away enough from the interrogation so that he'd be out of earshot, he hoped. If asked, he'd shrug and say he was securing a perimeter, or similar.

Clearly this benighted individual was going to prove difficult. All men had their breaking point, Cryvus knew, but they had neither the equipment nor the time to find this one's. Instead, Cryvus was going to have to draw upon the fey and terrible power of the warp once more. Cryvus leaned in close to the man and shared with him a truth to shiver the very soul.

"Haarlock returns, and hell comes with him."

The stormtroopers around the prisoner stepped away, way of the psyker's power. Masha looked on disapprovingly, bolt pistol held ready. Cryvus babbled nonsense and touched the prisoner's mind.

His resolve disappeared, his eyes widening as the horror Cryvus had unleashed overwhelmed him. He curled up on the floor, sobbing gently as his mind struggled to rationalise the things he'd seen.

(The prisoner should now be more open to questioning, though Cryvus' powers have left him in quite a state.)

Mithras had stepped away from the man, feeling thoroughly ill from the whole ordeal, but as he was to walk away even further Cryvus approached the prisoner, and Mithras closed his eyes and did the Aquila as the psyker unleashed the full horrors of the warp upon the poor soul.

"Do you want me to question him again... master Cryvus?" he spoke through gritted teeth, fumbling a lho-stick to his lips, but unable to light it as his finger kept slipping off of the igniter-glyph. Finally he cursed quietly and tossed the stick to the ground.

Cryvus shook his head, "I have this one," he said. Further physical persuasion shouldn't be necessary, merely answers to questions posed with the unspoken threat of further mind-shattering secrets backing them up. The location of Theodosia and any other compatriots would be a good place to start, with the identities of higher-level string-pullers an addd bonus, though he didn't expect this one to know much.

Gunner always tried to appear neutral and composed when psyker powers were in use, and he even had something of an advantage in that area, due to some of his previous work for the Inquisitor... but watching Cryvus almost casually ruin a man's mind was disconcerting, and he couldn't avoid a shudder as he looked on. He respected the man, and recognized him for the servant to the empire that he was, but he couldn't help being just the slightest bit afraid of him too.

He turned his attention to the stair wells. Cryvus and Mithras had this in hand. He gestured Mik to follow him as he took the stairs up carefully, keeping an eye out for trip wires along the way. Time to see if there was anything else important they had not yet paid proper attention yet. Upstairs first because it was, at least partially, already a known factor. It should be empty now, save for the bodies. If not, they would deal with it quickly and efficiently. The downstairs would come after, if nothing pressing forced them away.

Gunner was not surprised. The few men left upstairs were quite dead, as was the man in the small tower. Mithras' grenade grenade had blown the front off the structure, the would be shooter lying broken a few feet from the hole in the stonework. His weapon, a battered but serviceable looking heavy stubber, lay nearby.

The prisoner cowered before Cryvus, his reply fragmented by bouts of weeping and sharp intakes of breath. "He's below. In the basement. In the lab."

Mithras shook his head fiercely for a few seconds, as if trying to shake out something terrible in his mind, then shuddered one time before, calm as a rock, he picked up the lho-stick and lit it, putting it in his mouth.

"Then we're going in." Lifting his finger to his ear, he activated the small rune of his vox-bead and sent the message over their protected channels. "There is a laboratory beneath the church. Do not proceed further until we have secured the passage down to it. Over."

Hoisting his boltpistol, and reloading it with obvious and fanatical attention to every piece of ritual, Mithras made his way to the inside of the church again, motioning for the remaining stormtroopers to follow.

He'd never made the cut for the boys in Carapace, but he didn't let it get to his head that he was lording over them now.

The lab. Two words which brought back unpleasant memories. The unnamed Heretek's lab had been a place of horrors. Still, they had survived it and triumphed, and they would do the same here. Still, the memory did raise another couple of questions.

"What else is down there? And are there any other exits?" he asked. He had no interest in letting Theodosia slip away from justice.

Gunner returned to the main floor upon getting Mithras' message. He didn't have any particular interest in looting the dead heretics for servicable equipment, but he wouldn't stop Mik or anyone else that took an interest in them. He was simply satisfied with his current set up. He waited patiently for everyone else to be ready to move down into the depths of the Church.

"Acolyte business for now. Three consecutive taps means you boys are needed. Silence means get the throne out of here."

With that, Mithras nodded to the others, moving up to the basement entrance carefully, boltpistol raised in preparation for whatever could meet them.

Crysis and Masha followed after the other acolytes, the six of them walking in single file as they began their descent. It didn't last long; the cramped quarters of Ambulon left little room for vaulted ceilings and towering structures. The basement door was locked and reinforced, iron clod and too tough for Mikolas to simply batter down. Crisis provided an alternative means of progress, dexterous hands and fine tools bypassing the lock in a few seconds. What awaited for them on the other side was beyond their expectations.

A grand chamber stretched out in front of them, the walls lined with benches crowded with chymistrical equipment and criss-crossed wooden support beams. Rows of servitors attended to the apparatus and their gurgling contents, nimble bionics siphoning off fluids and adjusting dials. A number of simple pre-fabricated structures had been erected inside, the largest of which was draped with blood-streaked plastic. In another place it would have been a field hospital. Here it was a slaughterhouse. None of this shocked the acolytes, however. They'd all seen far worse in their time. It was the chamber itself that gave them pause. It was impossible. Its height alone would mean that its ceiling hung somewhere above the small church they'd just raided. The walkways and sudden drops of Ambulon did not intrude as they should.

Cryvus:
Spoiler:
Your sixth sense confirms what you likely already suspect. The laws of reality have been warped here, the power of the immaterium used to make this space more than what it should be.

Gunner:
Spoiler:
You spot a flash of movement from within the field hospital, a dark silhouette blurred by the opaque plastic that pass for its walls.

Cryvus focused his mind once again, stretching out with unnatural senses.

Cryvus:
Spoiler:
Your perceptions are confused. The warp is in disagreement about the dimensions of this place, the faint glow of each servitor shifting in their proximity to you. One thing is certain, however. There's someone here, a signature unlike a servitor but not quite like a man either. It's this perception that saves you.

It may have been Cryvus' half-uttered warning. It may have been the soft plunk that emanated from behind the plastic sheets of the slaughterhouse. Either way the acolytes were forewarned of their doom and able to react as the bulbous projectile arced through the air.

Mithras and Masha were the only ones to make it clear of the explosion, the sororitas retreating through the doorway as the guardsman, already crouched next to his kitbag, tensed his legs and propelling himself away from the grenade. The rest were caught as they scattered; shrapnel nicked the side of Mikolas' head and Cryvus' legs were knocked out from underneath him. Crisis barely had time to shield himself with his armoured cloak before he was hurled backwards, slamming into the wall and dropping to the ground. Gunner was thrown from his feet as well, the force of multiple shards of metal embedding his in flak armour toppling him.

"Welcome!" a voice called out. It was one Cryvus had heard before. "I hope you're proud of yourselves!" Theodosia exclaimed with no small amount of bitterness as the acolytes picked themselves up and reached for their weapons.

(Combat is on. It's hard to get a sense of the exact dimensions of this room, but you can tell that shot came from within somewhere within the medicae tent roughly 30m in front of you. You're all clustered around the entrance to the room which is quite devoid of cover. The walls, lab-benches and servitors working at them are about 10m away to your left and right. Here's a crude map. The effect of the grenade was diminished by the well armoured state of the acolytes, Cryvus taking 2 damage and Mikolas taking a mere 1. Gunner's armour absorbed the damage completely but Crisis, caught to the greatest degree by the explosion, took 5 wounds.)

Mithras tried to roll as he fell to the floor, bracing himself for impact and hugging his weapon close.

Of course, they'd be damned fools to have not expected this. An ambush, a last holdout by whoever of these bastards were left. Ducking away to the left, hoping to perhaps use a servitor as living shield, Mithras fired away once at the tent, hoping to hit where he expected the shooter to have been.

Cryvus picked himself up, bringing out his naval pistol and leveling it at the tent, "Now we see the violence inherent in the system!" he shouted, letting fly into the depths of the tent.

(Unnatural aim strikes again. Spending a fate point if need be to secure a hit.)

For lack of the ability to see another immediate target, Gunner fires in the direction Cryvus does. His choice of words was confusing, but now was hardly the time to ask him about it. He leapted away and to the left of his fellow acolytes. If they were spread out, their enemy was less likely to favor them with another thrown grenade.

(diagonal up and left movement to be clear)

Cryvus focused his mind, drawing on the full extent of his ability to divine the unseen, aimed and pulled the trugger. The pistol he'd been awarded by the Inquisitor barked and leapt in his grasp, spewing ragged shots designed to shred flesh towards the target only visible to his mind's eye. A scream of pain told him that he'd hit the mark, one that was quickly drowned out as Mikolas brought his own weapon to bear. He'd seen fit to recover the heavy stubber from the church above and, even though he didn't have the time to brace himself or much experience with firing such weapons accurately, proceeded to hose down Theodosia's position.

The medicae tent was torn apart by the hail of fire, plastic sheeting shredded and ripped away from the framework which it hung from. Masha cried out, alerting the others to the assassin's position as Crisis scrambled back through the doorway, seeking some form of cover. He was crouched behind an operating table, his face covered with blood, a weapon in each hand. He wasn't phased by the hail of fire, nor did he flinch as Mithras' shot flew past his head. He took aim with both weapons and fired. The bolter in his right hand roared. Pain lanced through Cryvus' body as a glancing hit detonated next to him, lacerated the flesh of his arm. Mikolas' right foot was knocked out from beneath him as a second bolt blew a chunk out of the ground. A grenade sailed over Mithras' head and blew several of the wooden struts lining the wall apart.

Reality shuddered as the room violently reshaped itself.

With the sound of cracking stone the left corner of the room lunged inwards, flowing around the servitors, desks and apparatus in its way. It stopped perilously close to Mithras, the servitor he'd taken as a shield slipping from his grasp as he looked upon the mess of writhing flesh and cybernetics that protruded most unnaturally from the reshaped stonework. Gunner managed to hold keep his nerve, overturning a desk for cover and sending delicate glass equipment flying.

(Map updated. Cryvus took 6 damage, taking him down to 2 wounds. Mikolas took a whopping 11 damage which would have dumped him down to -6, broken his leg and put him at risk of bleeding out. I figured Zero would want to spend a fate point on undoing some of that damage, taking him back up to -2 wounds and changing the critical effect to knocking him Prone (which he'll need to take a 1/2 action to stand up from) and inflicting 1 level of fatigue (-10 to all rolls.

Mithras, meanwhile, bombs his fear test at being confronted by a vile perversion of the laws of reality and gains 5 insanity points. He passes his trauma test but will still do everything in his power to move away from the hideous mix of stone, flesh and steel next turn. Gunner is unaffected.

As for Theodosia, Cryvus hit with several shots, though the exact damage he's inflicted is somewhat unclear. The man's bleeding badly from his head, that much is certain. Mikolas' orky approach to heavy firepower has also removed his concealment, though he's still in cover.)

Mik slid back before pulling himself up to his feet. "Fethin' legs!"

(Moving back, getting up. If there's any handy cover he'll be sidling up to it.)
