"Um..Junior...." The new Juniorkind trails off, inching behind Thirteen and pulling on her cloak a bit.

Thirteen didn't seem to mind. She focused on Enzo, actually almost cracking a smile. "Of course. It will likely be some months as they sort out the..Complications of the system. Just as a normal school's break."

There was a crack of lightning overhead, as she continued. "I've asked you here for another lesson. You have all become accustomed to your new selves, so now it's time for me to introduce a new concept; advancing your programs."

Poor kid...

Silvie looked at Junior, but before she could say anything to comfort him, she became sidetracked by Thirteen's statement. Curious, she asked, "Advancing our programs? Oh, you mean like training?"

"No, not training." Thirteen said. She looked down, nodding at Junior, before taking something from him. She held out her hand, and in it was a red chip, the same color as Junior's armor. "This is a program advance. It's...Similar to training, in that it will make us become stronger. But it is unlike anything a human can do."

She flipped the chip around for a moment, before holding it out again. "Have any of you ever wondered about magic? It is actually a deep part of us, now. We would not exist in our current forms without it; it's a very major part of our augmentation and what caused our mutation in the first place. But, enough of that."

She held the chip out again. "Have any of you ever thought about having magic of your own...?"

"...Huh? What do you mean magic? Like the kinda stuff the guy that made the Pyramid disappear on TV does?" Sam looks fairly confused at the idea. "'Cause real magic..." Cutting himself off, he shuts up before he accidentally spills the beans. His mom and dad told him about magic tricks, after all, but he doesn't want to ruin it for everyone else too.

Enzo's response was... surprisingly enthusiastic.

"Only like all the time ever every day! Are you serious? We could, like, do real magic? Really real?"

"With the proper advances, we all can. Without...Well, some of us can learn to do it on our own. However, whether it's "Magic" or just greatly increased technological prowess is up for debate." Thirteen says. "Who would like to try it for demonstration?"

Enzo managed not to look manic as he replied.

"I'll try it! What do I do?"

Alexis had half-raised her hand when Enzo bellowed his interest, and it went down with a zip. She was still smiling though, she was happy seeing Thirteen again and this new juniorkind seemed if possible more nervous than she was... which automatically meant she had to 'man up'. Can't act uncool around the younger kids!

Can we really learn how to do magic? Like... like in those comic-books? That would be really cool.

"Sure, I guess," Emily said, still a little bewildered at the prospect. After Ettezan's appearance, she kind of had to have an open mind on the whole magic thing, but making room for it in her world view was a different thing entirely to wielding it herself.

Come on, really? Magic? This is getting retarded. Digital children, ice zombies, comic book heroines and now magic?

"Okay, in my experience magic has always been a bunch of superstitious bullsh-" suddenly Max remembered that there were exceptionally younger ears around than usual, and caught himself. "Umm... baloney. But, uh... well, I've seen some crazy stuff since I started this whole 'Wunderkind' thing, so as long as I'm not lighting candles and doodling in pig's blood and listening to terrible music, I'll give it a shot. I'm open to having my worldview turned inside out yet again."

Thirteen flipped the chip between her fingers a bit, before letting it rest in her palm. She brought both her hands gether momentarily, and then separated them. Now, there were two red microchips in her hands, instead of just one. "Enzo and Alexis are the most suited for this, I think. But don't worry. You will all get a chance to try."

She held the chips out to the two, allowing them to take them. "There is a compartment under your right wrist. It has four slots, at the moment, for all of you. Two sets of two. Insert the chips into the furthest most slot, and your system will ask for confirmation of a program advance. Let it."

Enzo gingerly took the chip Thirteen was offering, and opening the wrist compartment as instructed.

"Huh. That's... I didn't know we had these. So, I guess these are software plugins? And we've got room for more? Neat."

He didn't waste any time following the rest of Thirteen's instructions. This was going to be fun.

Alexis takes the chip gently and looks it over with wide eyes, biting on her lip a little as Thirteen tells how to use it. Then she looks down on her wrists and nods, realizing the presence of the slots... slots she hadn't even thought about before!

With no further ado she slides the chip into the slot furthest out, giddy with expectation. Awesome, magic! She even pretended not to have heard what Max had said!

Enzo gave the chip permission, and waited. Shortly after, his suit began to change. The tan muted and darkened to black, while the blue became brighter, a sort of dayglow electric blue color. Enzo watched it with surprise and wonder.

"Thirteen...?"

He reveled as he felt... something change. His display flickered, and he felt something change. His power output had changed, like a new reactor had activated. He had time to realize that he was data, there were no reactors here, when a pair of gauges appeared in his view. His software updated to monitor something it had labeled the "Hilbert effect", and he had a power gauge for that reactor he couldn't possibly have, but did.

He looked at his hands. He just suddenly knew, and- *krzz-POP* He started as electricity arced between his fingers, and then popped when he stopped thinking about it, startled by his own new ability. It took him a moment to realize he was on the ground now, on his rear. He must have fallen to a sitting position at some point there.

"... This is AWESOME."

Taken by surprise nearly as much as Enzo was, Sam looks fairly surprised when Enzo starts letting his newfound powers take effect. But still, magic?

"That's really cool, Enzo! But...um..." He turns to Thirteen, looking a little reluctant to say what comes next, but following through anyway. "...um...we all use electricity outside to do stuff, don't we? And in here we can already do stuff like make stuff appear by thinking about it, right? It's really neat an' all, but...how come you say it's magic, Thirteen?"

"You'll find it quite hard to control the lightning and bend it to your will." Thirteen says. "That is, without the advance."

She looks skywards, indicating. "Even though we are we, the lightning here continues without any heed to your will."

Suddenly, there's another voice on the comms. Hey, I'm on my way. Kid says. I, uh..Overslept a bit.

Max wasn't too upset about not being picked for the first round of "magic" program advances, but he was surprised to hear about a compartment of his new body that he was somehow not aware of. He opens his wrist compartment just to take a look at it. Now that he's been told, it seems so obvious. How did he not know about that before?

"Huh."

Then Max sees the electricity flow between Enzo's fingers. With that, and Thirteen's words, he gets a better idea of the kind of 'magic' she was talking about. Sounded more like metaphysical powers from sci-fi movies than stupid goth subculture crap. Max could get behind that.

Oh hey, Kid! I was wondering where you were.

Alexis confirmed the transfer herself and smiled widely as all kinds of bars and diagrams and text began to flash over her eyes. From her studies, she recognized a few of the programming lingo, but most of it was gibberish to her. 'Hilbert effect'?

She took a step back in shock as she felt something way too familiar build up inside her body. With a flash her armor had gone from dark-palette to bright orange and yellow, with black stripes, and her hair suddenly took on a deep-red hue, much like her eyes. Her eyes were wide as she looked at her hands, mouth open in a little o...

Then fire burst from her fingers in little circles and shapes, crackling lightly, and Alexis shrieked. She threw herself against the wall, backed up against it and wailed as the fire continued, harmlessly, to crackle on her outstretched hands. Tears streamed down her face as she was as pale as a ghost, quivering all over.

As Alexis begins to spaz out, Thirteen bursts into motion faster than the others eyes can detect.

She quickly grabs both of Alexis's hands, holding them firmly, while circling behind her, locking the other girl's feet in place. "Calm." Thirteen says firmly, yet oddly soothingly. "Look. You are commanding it. It will not hurt you now."

Alexis didn't look as if she was hearing it, but she'd stopped sobbing and screaming, merely staring in horror at the flames in her hands.

She was shaking all over and seemed to try to shrink into herself. If she had still been human, she would have been sweating, but now she merely looked ash-white, as her hair seemed to come undone and flowed around her, firey red and acting almost like fire itself.

"N-n-n-n-n-n-n-no-non-no..." she mumbled, eyes locked on the fire

With another deft motion, Thirteen twists Alexis arm around fluidly, opening the chip compartment and yanking the chip back out.

Before Alexis' suit even returns to it's original color, she's back in her original position. "Perhaps you aren't ready for this, yet."

With the fire gone, the girl sagged down to her knees, hugging them tightly and shaking like a leaf... but soon she calmed down a bit... and shook her head. "Don... don't like f-f-fire..."

Max was much less comfortable with Alexis's little escapade than with Enzo's... but now that it was over, he shook it off, and hoped no one noticed.

"So... umm... why is it that Enzo got electricity, and Alexis got fire? It looked like you just duplicated the program advance chip thing. So, even though they're copies, they aren't the same?"

"It depends on personality, thoughts, experiences...Among other things." Thirteen says, narrowing her eyes at the chip in her hand.

Junior, however, finally breaks away, walking towards Alexis, and reading out to her, offering another chip. "T-try this one, f-first..then the other. It m-might work better."

Alexis looked at Junior as he walked up to her and, somewhat unsteadily, she got up and smiles a little, wiping her face with the back of her arm and nodded.

"Th-thanks..." she mumbled, looking a little embarrassed, and took the chip into her hands. She took the child's hand with her other and squeezed it a bit before she, with some look of determination on her face, sank the chip into a slot on her arm, pinching her eyes close while doing it... only to open them a second later...

Steeling herself for what was going to happen, Alexis stepped up to Thirteen, still all a-quiver, and took back the chip from her, before plunging it into the second slot without as much as a flinch of hesitation... She blinked, only once, and her hands were bunched into tight fists.

Alexis opened her eyes widely as her entire uniform suddenly shifted into a blue theme. The darker parts of it became deep marine, and light blue was that of the lighter parts. Her hair, previously gray, took on a blueish-gray tint, looking almost like ice, and her previously intense red eyes were the color of snow. She seemed... calm, at peace almost, and a light fog emitted from her hands as she smiled a bit.

"Thank you, Junior. Wow... this... this is pretty amazing..." she smiled at the others and tried out her powers, a small orb of snow forming in her hand.

This whole magical transformation thing was cool and all, but it kept raising more and more questions. Max seemed unusually flustered in the face of so much awesome.

"Wait, so, what was that mod chip she slotted first? Some kind of reversal chip that gives you the opposite... element, I guess? And, like, if what power you get is based on your personal experiences or whatever, why did Alexis get fire powers if she's..." Max glances over at Alexis and decides to choose his words a bit more carefully. "...you know... not a big fan of fire?"

Max nods at Enzo. "And what would the opposite of electricity be? Ground?"

"It was a reversal chip." Thirteen says. "Even though she may not like it, her affinity is that of fire and ice. Her natural affinity is for fire, however, so the reverse switched her to a more..Icy state." Thirteen says. "I'm unsure what the opposite of electricity is. The opposite of ground..Is clearly space."

"Yeah!" Sam grins, glad to see Alexis both feeling better and happy about her powers, magic or not. "That's really awesome too. Hey, what all can both of you do? Can you do anything besides make your stuff? Like can you do stuff to electricity and ice and stuff that's already there? Or can you do stuff like it like static electricity or making things colder or that kinda thing? Oh, I wonder what all the rest of us are too now!" He turns to Thirteen. "Are all our powers all based on some kinda stuff like that? Or do some people have other groups of powers, like...uh...someone with "make other people stronger" powers, or "move stuff with their mind" powers, or stuff like that, the way Enzo has electricity powers? What all kindsa groups of powers are there?"

Alexis gave Max a thankful smile and he could notice that there was a thin sheet of frost on her skin, 'though it didn't seem to bother her. It occasionally melted, shifted around and formed small, crystalline patterns.

She felt so much at ease she even gave a little laugh and nodded, steam coming out of her mouth. "Yeah, I wonder if I could do anything like she did." she closed her eyes for a few seconds and then tried to form something out of snow and ice... maybe she could make a flower? She tried to imagine one, a poppy, and slowly a mental image began to form in her mind.

"I don't know if I can do anything more besides making things cold..." she mumbled as she worked with it... "some parts of it I understand, but it feels strange... if I can make things cold... and hot... maybe Enzo can use his powers to control electronics? ...Isn't electricity motion? Maybe he can stop people from moving..." she giggled a bit, only half paying attention to what she was saying. Wasn't movement just electrical signals going through the body?

Now that she can get a good look at it, Lauren notices that the book is about a foot tall, nine inches or so wide, and fairly thick. It's bound with some sort of metal straps on it, and as Juliet drops it, it hangs around her waist noisily on a pretty large metal chain.

Finally, Juliet gets her thoughts in order:

"She's a freak. You're a freak. I'm a freak. We're all freaks. It's just a matter of how."

With that she begins walking out, her massive book clanking noisily against her leg.

Lauren frowned as she hurried to catch up. "Freaks? Why would you say that? Being different isn't always better or worse. Sometimes it's just...different."

Lauren:

Juliet continues walking through the halls, going nowhere and looking for nothing in particular. "There's different, and then there's a bunch of kids who have been turned into electrical signals and computer data. We're freaks."

Everyone Else:

Thirteen thinks for a moment, before answering. "I'm not sure exactly what it's all dependent on. With practice, you will become much better at it. The chips are not strictly bound to anyone, so if you'd like to exchange them, that is fine."

As Alexis worked, finding that she couldn't do more than a lump of lumpy lump snow, Thirteen holds out her hands again. Six chips, now, three the color of Razzie's armor, three the color of Benjis. "These are a little easier to dupe. They will not grant magic, but they will give you other program advances."

Kid came gliding up then, as her XLR8 system shut down. "Hey guys, what's going on?"

Alexis sighed and let the lump of snow melt in her hand. She probably needed a lot more practice... But that she'd do when alone, right now stuff was happening and she looked at the chips in Thirteens hands with wide eyes.

"Cool, are you guys getting special abilities too?" She clapped her hands together and watched with eager for anyone to take the first chip when Kid came gliding.

"Hey Kid!" she exclaimed happily and ran up to the girl, giving her a little hug, although she looks a bit embarrassed moments later. "We're getting special chips from Thirteen. Isn't this cool? I've got ice powers!"
