Shawn, seemingly returned to normal now, sat outside of her tent, smoking. She wrapped herself in a blanket, and just made particular note of glaring at everyone that came past. She watched as the boy from the tent across from hers (Todd Reed) emerged, and grins around her cigarette. "Hey, Toddy. You hear about this Spirit yet?"

Infinite Staircase - Magpie

"Oh, is that so?" Jusne smiles. "Well, with such high praise, how could I say no? I've never visited Automata before, so this should be an interesting trip indeed. If it's nothing but smithwork, it shouldn't take me long to prepare, I just need to gather my tools and some changes of clothes. How long to the door we'll be taking? And just what is this project you need my help on, anyway?"

Shawn

Not expecting Shawn to be sitting outside, Todd starts, scowling at her for the scare. A young human of about 10, he's an all-around average kid; olive-skinned and dark-haired, with the same basic clothing that most Guild members prefer. He's lived here with his mother for about the last year, one of the few parents that doesn't mind Shawn's "bad" influence. Just so long as Todd doesn't start taking up her habits himself.

"Um...I didn't see her, but Jene and Vis did. They were arguing about her. Jene said was Yondalla visiting us from the Green Fields, but Vis said she was one of the lillends in disguise that just likes kids. Did you see her? What d'you think?"

1150 XP for Shawn for the NPC.

"She's a ghost." Shawn says, taking a puff, while at the same time tossing Todd a toffee from her candy bag. "And she eats kids, I heard. But only the good ones. Taste better."

Infinite Staircase - Shawn

Todd catches the candy, frowning at her description. "...Nuh uh. They said that she said she's gonna help good kids, reward them and stuff." He pops the candy into his mouth, thinking a little more on her claim. "...And Mom said there aren't any ghosts on the Staircase! You're makin' up stories, aren't you?"

Hearing the ruckus, Rocket pokes his head out of the tent, padding over and pushing himself into Shawn's blanket, to Todd's great interest. "Hey, you got a cat? Neat! When'd you get a cat? What's its name?"

Shawn smiles, scratching Rocket under his chin as he comes up, and then poking his head out of her blanket. "His name's Rocket. And he's not just any cat. Take a look-" She lifts him up for a moment, giving Todd a better look. "He's a tiger."

Asp had embarked upon another round of adding to his spellbook, cheerfully making the rounds of the camp and acquiring whatever scrolls caught his fancy. Presently, he was infesting the tent of Garrus the Scribe, challenging that wizened elder's preconceptions as to proper wizardly behaviour with his haphazard ways and constant chattering.

"Oh, and I should get a protection from evil spell, too," Asp carried on, "Not that I think Filiatiere's evil, although it might be, but I think I'd get more use out of it than, say, protection from good."

Magpie seemed pleased with how the bariaur quickly agreed to join it back to Automata, and nodded almost enthusiastically. "I have decided that there are some changes I need to do to myself. If not only to forestall future misunderstandings, but also to adapt more readily to the world I have become a part of." the construct took out the small paper it had sketched down the plans on and handed it to Jusne, "I have worked extensively with wood-crafting recently, and I believe that that experience will be useful, but we, that is, mistress Hoshi, I and presumably also Lorraine, although I have not discussed the matter with her, believe that another craftsman more used to making armor would be needed as well. Mistress Hoshi expressed some reservations on the amount of mithril we can remove while still keeping up a good standard... smelting is unfortunately not an option."

Infinite Staircase - Shawn

Todd approaches carefully, and Rocket follows him with his eyes as he comes near. "Wow. He's a real tiger? Where'd you get him? Can I pet him? Does he bite?"

Asp

Though it's been a struggle, Garrus has done his best not to simply kick Asp out of his home. As well-traveled as he could be at the age of 279, he's still never adjusted to the ways of the occasional kender he's encountered, and yet there's simply something about their attitude that's always kept him from snapping at them as he would anyone else with that way of being. It hasn't kept him from getting fairly exasperated in their presence, though, but he's a very patient gnome these days.

He sighs, taking the scroll case out of his stores. "A reasonable enough conclusion, so long as you don't plan to be crusading against the Upper Planes any time soon. And is that the last of it, then, Asp?"

Nora chirps a bit, brushing against Asp's legs; it's only recently that she's enjoyed the use of their shared, secret language, but she's seemed to enjoy having something beyond pure empathy to communicate with. "How much longer are we going to be out, Asperel? I just want to sleep back home..."

Magpie

Jusne takes the smile, laughing heartily as he sees just what Magpie has planned. "So you're the project, then? Well, that's certainly something different, then. I'm honored you trust me so much as to reform your body, Magpie." He frowns, thinking to himself. "But is the door close enough to return to the Guild for nights? I'd hate to be away from Misa and the tots too long, but with all the ruckus there recently, I'm not sure about bringing them with me. I'd need to talk to her first if it would have to be a long-term stay."

Another bonus! 750 for Asp.

"Well me, and thank you for the offer," Garick said, extending a hand to meet the greeting. His shake was a bit tentative, as he wasn't sure how the greeting was supposed to work. He'd seen others shaking hands before and understood the logistics, but he wasn't sure how hard he was supposed to squeeze. He figured it might have been a quick judge of strength between men, so he squeezed a bit harder than he probably should have. "I appreciate the help. I'm actually thinking of going over to the smithy to have a look around. Can you point me in the general direction?"

Unlike the others, Lorraine had remained in Automata. She continued to work with Hoshi, to prepare for Magpie's return, and the work that would begin then. It wasn't for a lack of wanting to return, but a desire to not have to return after leaving in the first place. She would occasionally brush a finger over the pendant that had previously been her employer. She was so eager to study it... but now just wasn't the time.

The construct hesitated for a little while before it answered the question posed to it. "It would take on average five hours to ascend the staircase leading to Automata, and roughly calculated half that time to head down..." it thought for a while before continuing, "If you desire to be with your family, I can understand. The help I am asking of would be considerably time-consuming, even more so if you desired to head back here at the end of every day. It is, however, not impossible."

It made a little bow and spoke with a less formal tone, "It would seem advisable to speak to your wife about it. I will be waiting here. Do not worry, I have some things I need to see to while I wait."

Infinite Staircase - Garick

Barclay winces a bit at Garick's pressure, giving the wood elf a strange look as he pulls his hand away, massaging it. After a bit of thought, he nods, pointing out the various recommendations as he runs them down. "Well, that depends on what sort of smithwork you need. You want weapons, that'd be Aquar. He's just past the far end of the bazaar, near the landing corner. Jusne does all right weaponwork, but he'd be the first choice for armorwork or day-to-day items. Go straight about 6 tents down, and take a left for 10. Now, for more specialty items - latticework, figures, miniature pieces - I'd recommend Degand. He's off the opposite edge, behind me. Of course, you could also stop by the forge; not hard to miss, it's the leather tent in the bazaar just off the doorward edge. Not enough room for more than one, so they share the space, stop in when they need it. That enough to get you oriented?"

Magpie

"Yes, that's just what I was thinking." He grins, laughing. "Yes, this is something we should decide together, of course, though I think Misa will agree. The distance sounds fine, that's a trip I can easily manage for a few days; I've done longer, in my days before the Guild. And I don't have any other projects on me either that other smiths can't pick up just as well. I won't be able to devote a full day's work each day, of course, but it sounds like you have enough aid that you'll hardly see I'm gone. How about we meet tomorrow morning at the stairs? And if she ends up surprising me, I'll let you know I'll be stuck here instead."

Automata - Lorraine

At the moment, Lorraine's main job is observing Hoshi, allowing her to be taught just what it is she'll have to do. While she certainly has some experience in weaponcrafting, the work Hoshi does is a good deal different. Cast-iron molds and molten metal rather than pounded blades or hammer heads, it's something Lorraine has little familiarity with, but she can grasp the general ideas relatively quick. For now, Hoshi studies Magpie's various images, creating the wax mold cores around which clay will be fired, forming the final molds that Magpie's material will be reprocessed into and reattached for its final form. A good dozen molds already have their plaster coated, drying in the breeze with their various wax spurs jutting out here and there.

As she works, glancing between the plans and the next wax core, she speaks to Lorraine with the voice of a craftsman engrossed in her work. "Well, I think you're up to it by this point, Lorraine. Why don't you go ahead and get started? Just choose a piece and start carving." With a quick glance upwards, she grins, motioning towards the empty seat next to her. "Go on, just jump right in. No better way to get your start."

The construct gave the blacksmith a polite bow and replied calmly, "Understood. I will return to my tent once more, and come daybreak tomorrow, I will await you at the stairs. Please give my regards to your wife and children, tell them I shall create more animals to them if they behave themselves while you are gone."

The warforged had taken to whittling small, wooden animals whenever it needed to find a way to spend its free time. Initial attempts had been admittedly rather clumsy, but now there were several small, reasonably well made cats, dogs, horses and the odd wooden man or woman owned by children around the tent-city.

"I think so," Asp said after a moment's thought, "I can always come back if I need more, right?" This was one of those questions that was ever so slightly rhetorical. One could be sure that Asp would be back if he found himself in need of something, though he should at least do Garrus the favour of announcing his presence rather than blithely strolling right in.

"We're almost done, Nora," he said as an aside, "Then it'll be back home for study and transcription. And tomorrow, we interrogate Filiatierre."

Theller sighed. "Had I paper and charcoal, I would have. I was embroiled in even more pressing matters than the altar at the time...escorting former slaves of the illithids here to the Infinite Staircase was first on that list.

"Could the stone around the artifact be cut and lifted away with the altar still attached, or do you believe its power is so great as to prevent even that?"

Shawn nods, smiling. "He's a real tiger. And he won't bite, so long as you let him sniff you, first. He's like a really big kitten, just don't be too rough with him and he'll be gentle to you. We found him in the planes, somewhere. I don't remember where."

Infinite Staircase - Theller

He nods. "Of course, I understand. Just a bit hopeful, you see." With a small smile he falls into thought, considering Theller's plan. "That could work, yes. I have no way of knowing the strength of this artifact's effects without a more personal examination, but it's the best option I can see. I'd suggest getting together a small group, and heading out tomorrow back for this city of yours. Let's see if we can't bring this discovery of yours home, eh?"

Shawn

Cautiously, Todd holds his hand out to Rocket, letting the tiger cub smell him. He watches Todd, yawning, and lifts his head, purring as Todd begins to pet.

"I've never seen a real tiger before." Todd grins, scratching Rocket behind his ears. "Are you gonna keep him? He's nice, I like him. We don't have any pets except Mom's horse. She's nice too, but Mom keeps her at the stables mostly."

It seems that Magpie and Asp's stuff is pretty much done for this day, so I'll leave you two there for now. Let me know if I'm wrong.

Zant didn't remain at the Guild for long. The time he was there for was spent in seclusion and meditation until, after a few days, he packed up his belongings and said his goodbyes. He said he was returning to Water to seek spiritual guidance, wished those he was acquainted with well and expressed a hope to see them again some day.

Infinite Staircase - Shawn

Nodding, Todd sits on the ground in front of Rocket, barely even looking to Shawn now as he pets the cub. Rocket rolls over onto his side, enjoying the attention as he begins to drift off into sleep.

"Yeah, he does seem really nice. That'll be fun, Shawn, having a tiger around here. Oh, you should see if you can train him to do tricks or things too! Most cats don't I don't think, but maybe tigers do."

Seems like most everyone is ready to move forward at this point, and enough time's past that it feels like a good time for it. If people still want to continue things going on right at this moment, get in touch with me and we can move on in AIM or over PM, and I'll post the results up in the thread when done. Other than that, in my next post it'll be a timeskip to about two weeks ahead, and I'll be talking to everyone about what they want to do over the course of those two weeks.

Infinite Staircase

Two weeks have passed since the events at the Illithid city and Automata, with news still coming every so often about the progress of the March; they've reached the city of Fortitude just today, with the Harmonium soldiers wisely clearing a wide path to let them through to the plane of Arcadia with little trouble. Whitemoon, the decennial lammasu conclave, is due to begin soon, a month of discussion and revelry on the heights of Mount Celestia for the celestial beings. A major Acheronian disjunction is due to take place soon in Avalas, a tremendous collision involving at least 8 different cubes that's expected to result in dozens of new cubes formed from the debris.

In more local concerns, not long ago marked the successful arrival of the altar brought in from the Outlands. From the research pursued by Brenn, Theller's artificer friend, it seems to be some sort of object connected to the Celtic god Diancécht. While chiseling the rock around it does seem to have reduced its power somewhat, it still should be a quite helpful contribution to the guild. Tales from the guild's children of "The Spirit" still spread, but details vary, though it seems that all agree on its encouragement for the kids to stay on their best behavior; while it has some of the parents muttering, most others ignore it. New members have come and old members have left, unfortunately more of the latter than the former, and in the saddest such news, word's arrived within the last week of the death of the Fyrd, a well-regarded party within the guild that has been out exploring the Lower Planes for the last two months. A sole survivor, badly scarred, has returned to report they were caught in an acid monsoon on Carceri, with the other seven lost to the planes; it's rare that word returns of the ultimate fate of long-absent members, but when it does, it's rarely good.

As for our own party itself, it's marked with at least one unfortunate departure of its own, if not quite as tragic; Zant's return to the Plane of Water, while perhaps unexpected, is in all hopes not permanent. Magpie, meanwhile, has shown a marked change, its former bulky form replaced with a much more human-scale body thanks to the work of Lorraine and Hoshi. As for the rest of the guild members, most of their time has been spent pursuing various personal interests, and simply relaxing after the two long trips they underwent. The goblin and human refugees, though still not having chosen new names, seem to be growing more and more accustomed to life in the Guild, though the human's still been seen spending long times sitting at the edge of the platform and staring off into space - always with someone close by to watch him, thankfully.

It's on a day some two and a half weeks after the return that we come back to our party. A day of excitement and fun for many, as a major shipment from Inner Planar traders has just arrived from Ice to spend the next three days perched on the landing just above before continuing on; one of the few caravan stops that visits the Guild. As usual it brings with it not just polar bear pelts and eternal ice, but also a half-dozen new travelers that seem interested in joining or even simply visiting the community - a wide variety from the outrageous to the mundane, ranging from Inner Planar natives curious of the life beyond, to a druid's canine companion seeking aid for his master. Meanwhile, a ragged looking raptoran has just climbed onto the platform, urgently seeking her cousin Theller; exhausted, out of breath, and uncomfortable in these environs, she says little more to anyone, not eager to speak with anyone but her family.

Just to clarify stuff for people that want to add some fluff to their posts; the caravan has mostly stuff from Ice since that's where it just came from, but it's still got some things from Air, Lightning, and Radiance too, and possibly a few items they picked up from other travelers from just about anywhere.

Garick had spent the last two and a half weeks wandering in and out of the Guild, exploring the neighboring areas of the Staircase, as well as some of the closer planes. He had been keeping an ear to the ground about the goings-on with the Modron March, curious about the reason for the early march. He was also around when the surviving member of the Fyrd had returned. Garick knew, probably more than most, the sorts of dangers that some planes hold for travelers. Though he didn't know any of the members of the team, he sympathized with the man and felt his pain.

Garick happened to be returning to the Guild this very day when the traders came by. Curious about what all the commotion had been, he wandered over. He browsed the small tents and impromptu shops that were set up. As he went through, a few items caught his eyes, but he didn't actually buy anything. As he wandered about, he noticed a bird-like female, and his curiosity got the best of him. She looked a bit distressed and lost, so Garick walked over to her.

"Hi, uh, you look a bit lost," Garick said, trying to be as amicable as possible, but not doing a particularly good job. "Do you need, you know, uuh, help?"

Magpie had had an... interesting last few days. Upon returning to the Guild, she (yes, well, it's pretty obvious now, isn't it?) set upon revisiting many of her friends, surprising them not only with a remodelled body, but a face capable of some basic expressions, moving parts and eyelids and everything! Maybe not having expected this, Magpie found herself bombarded with curiousity, until the construct had to escape into its tent for a moment of relief.

With the arrival of the trading expedition, Magpie had dared to venture up to the merchants, purchasing cloth, furs, trinkets, basically anything it felt it could do anything with, offering to give them a few crafted animals as well (it was running out of shelf-space for them, and although a growing trend of collecting all the animals Maggie was making had popped up amongst the children of the guild (someone was even making up a small index, naming all the animals that they found... rarely letting things like officially established genus getting in the way) but despite the growing demand, the construct still had plenty to give away.

Having noticed the canine, the warforged approached it like it did most animals, looming over it for a few seconds before bending down (rather wobbly, however, with the still-recent shift in gravitational center). "Hello dog." she said matter-of-factly as she reached out to scratch it behind an ear.

Lorraine, not unlike Zant but not entirely like Zant either, had left the guild. The difference was that while Zant's time away was uncertain, Lorraine promised to return in the following week or the one just after. She claimed she had some research that needed doing, and that she was on the verge of an important breakthrough.

A few things might or might not stand out to Magpie about this 'dog'. The most obvious was that it was outfitted with a high quality leather barding, lightly etched with curved designs and stylized leaves. It covers the wolf's neck, chest, shoulders, back and hips, and it also wears a matching set of strapped on leather leg bracers. They're all fit precisely to the wolf's body, the hallmark of a custom order made to a skilled leather worker. After that, the wolf looks fairly average: White-Gray fur, amber eyes. It's a long hair, probably from somewhere cold.

It stood still when Magpie spoke, looking up at her attentively. He sat, and and spoke:

"Please don't call me dog; My name is Phelan."

It waited eagerly for Magpie to reply. There was a flash of silver light when Phelan spoke... His teeth were capped in some kind of metal.

Garick

The woman starts, giving Garick a suspicious-looking glance. Muttering something in a language that sounds vaguely similar to Elven, though not near enough for Garick to understand any of it, she frowns, glancing between the tents. From closer up, he can see that she seems to be exhausted. Dark circles line her eyes, and she seems pale and shaky; she probably hasn't slept in days. A badly-kept, second-hand shortsword at her waist is the only weapon she seems to carry, its blade so knicked and marked that it could easily have been grabbed out of the wreckage heap of some fortress. She doesn't look to have any sort of pack or supplies either, making the nature of her trip here even stranger.

Smoothing a tuft of feathers on her head, she looks back to Garick. "...I look Theller. You know he? This place...'Gild'? Is Theller here?"

Meanwhile, Shawn is currently darting through the sea of tents. She holds a package over her head, running to and fro, seemingly more concerned with finding something instead of going somewhere. "Hey! Out of the way!" She shouts at...Well, basically anyone in her way. "Has anyone seen Florence? I'm looking for Florence! Get out of my way, useless!"

Shawn

Coming back from the kitchen area with a small satchel of various fruits and rolls, Florence doesn't pay much notice to the distant commotion, until she catches the sound of her own name being called. Following the distant voice, Florence makes her way across the Guild camp, and it doesn't take her long to recognize who it is. As she nears, she spies the box weaving between tents, and with a small laugh to herself, she heads towards it, soon stepping out into her path, smiling. "You know, I just about heard you from the other side of the landing, Shawn."

"Well, good. Because this is important."

She tucks the package under her arm, and pops a chocolate into her mouth. "Doesn't help that some of the people around are feeling especially useless today. Anyway..."

She hoists the package out again, and holds it out. "Um...I got you somethin'. Y'know, as a way to say...Thanks, and stuff, for all that you do for me."

She grins ear to ear as she waits for the package to be taken.

Shawn

Florence smiles back, taking the package and carefully unwrapping it. "Oh, you didn't need to get me anything, Shawn." Soon reaching the box beneath the paper, she opens it up, pulling the jacket free. She looks it over, feeling alongside the inner layer of polar bear fur before grinning to Shawn. "...I love it. It looks great. I hope you didn't spend too much on me, though." She tries it on, tucking the empty box under one arm. "And it even fits right. Shawn, this is perfect. Thank you."

"Well, y'know...I know you like polar bears, and...I kind of hoped that you wouldn't get the wrong idea with the polar bear fur..."

She coughs, digging the toe of her left foot into the cobblestones.

Shawn

"Well, you don't have to worry, because I think it's great. And it should be very useful too, I can always use new traveling gear." She squeezes Shawn's shoulder, giving her a short laugh as she smiles to the girl. "Of course, you know this means I'll have to find you something too, right?"

Asp had been having a great time looking around the caravan. All sorts of things newly arrived from the inner planes, which he hadn't quite gotten around to visiting yet. In fact, Asp had decided to see if he could track down a map or two. Such things always came in handy on journies, except for maybe journeys through Limbo, which would change as you were mapping it, resulting in a great deal of overlain squiggliness. One of these days, he was going to have to assemble a big, interconnected map of the planes. Sure, it had been done before, but he had a sneaking suspicion people were just copying the layouts from one another. How long had it been since anyone had set out to map the Great Wheel from first principles, he wondered.

Anyway, maps, momentarily interrupted by Magpie talking to a wolf, which you didn't see every day (mostly owing to a certain lack of wolves), closely followed by the wolf talking back, which had to add another order of magnitude to the out-of-the-ordinary scale. Time, Asp decided, for a detour. He angled towards the pair, though he refrained from jumping into the conversation just yet. Magpie, he had found, wasn't much of a talker, and it wouldn't do to interrupt one of her conversations in progress.

Garick looked down at the girl, a bit confused, and thought for a second. He couldn't quite figure out what she had said before the broken bit of language she could, but the name she mentioned sounded quite familiar. He scratched his head a little bit while thinking, then his eyebrows shifted as he recognized the name, and frankly the race. Theller was a member of the other adventuring party that had come back at the same time as his own. And he was just as feathery, if not more so, than this young lady in front of him. Suddenly, a quick point in the right direction was going to become a search for a flying man.

"Uh, yeah, I know of him. Not sure where he is, though. Here follow me, I'll bring you around to see if we can't find him." He led her off to try and find Theller. He wondered, though, if he shouldn't have brought her to an inn first.

Theller was with Brenn again, looking over the altar, having just retrieved and paid for a new spear he had commissioned. "It is a terrible shame that it could not be brought with its full powers intact," the raptoran said, "but I am profoundly overjoyed to have it here. Although I do hope its presence will not be putting out of business anyone involved in the sale of magical healing. Such a thing might collapse the market!"

Magpie blinked slowly and then nodded, her face contorting in a slightly surprised expression before she nodded and smiled. "I understand, Phelan. I apologize, I was not aware you could talk."

For a few awkward moments Magpie just looked at the wolf, and then nodded, "My name is Magpie. It is a pleasure to meet you Phelan, is there any way I could help you? If you want to, I could show you around the guild, if you intend to stay here for a while."

Phelan nodded at the Kender's arrival as best he could, and then responded to Magpie. He speaks pretty quickly, and in good common, if rushed and just this side of hysterical. He sounds almost like a kid, but not-quite; His voice is the only thing wrong for it, aside from obviously not being humanoid.

"Actually, I need help back on the Plane of Ice. My friend has gone missing, and I'm really worried about him! He told me to come here if he didn't return in a day or two from his expedition thing... and he's still missing, so here I am! There's these little clockwork things attacking the town we were staying in, too. Creepy weird things that are attacking people. I can't help them alone! Can you and maybe some of your friends come help me?"

Here he turned to look at Asp hopefully, puppy dog eyes out in full force.

[Gah, Totally missed that Asp came along, sorry!]

Magpie looked up at Asp and smiled lopsidedly... although this looked more like lack of proper muscle-control than anything else. "Asp, it is good to see you again. This is Phelan, he is a dog who can talk." the construct would have said more, but it realized Phelan was talking, and grew silent, listening intensely before nodding.

"We are not busy, and it worries me that your friend is missing. I will gladly help you, Phelan, because I am a nice person." It spoke with the utter conviction of it being the nicest of people.

"Of course we'll help," Asp said enthusiastically, "Can't have random clockwork things going around killing villagers after all." It was really the sort of thing that ought to be discouraged, he felt. For a moment, he wondered if it was modrons, but no, they were out at Arcadia, so it couldn't be any of the ones involved in the march. "Leave it to us. We'll have a group assembled in no time, won't we Magpie?

"Uh... oh... yes, absolutely" Magpie seemed a little confused by Asp's enthusiasm, but nodded in agreement, stil half-smiling.

"Perhaps I can help you in that regard."

A young and particularly sturdy looking dwarf strode towards the trio of the wolf, the construct and the halfling, a friendly smile playing across his face beneath a finely groomed moustache. "I couldn't help but overhear your conversation. It sounds to me that you're in need of a skilled warrior and, luckily for you, I just so happened to be passing by." He did look the part at least, dressed as he was in scale armour with the tools of his trade secured on his person. "Kongunvir Reginsmith." he announced, bowing the the group as a whole. "Might I have your names?"
