Zant kept his distance from the marching machine-things, watching them with the usual neutral expression. He couldn't completely hide his concern, though. Several people had been trampled by the things and they hadn't shown any sign of acknowledging this. Perhaps they were more a force of nature than anything else, but it didn't sit well with him. Magpie's thoughts only reinforced his own.

Lorraine was with Zant and Magpie, her face stoney and her face pale.

Automata - Modron Way

Asp heads with the other interested sorts, peppering a monodrone with all sorts of questions. While he's able to keep up well with the surge of forces, it doesn't seem to have the slightest bit of interest in responding to him. None do; Asp is far from the only one trying to pull some information out of them, but the entire force seems to be utterly ignoring everyone but themselves, all attention focused directly ahead with no concern or even notice of those about them.

Realized that some folks might want a pic for reference: http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs14/f/2007/ ... llon82.jpg ; of course, ignore the upper-right one. There's none like that in this group. (Also the scene on the left is Mechanus, not Automata, so ignore that too.)

Also, since I forgot to mention before: the March is moving at 20 ft. speed, so there's no problem for folks trying to keep up with it. Of course, as a result, that also means it took about a half hour or so for the entire March to emerge from the gate. It might have sounded a lot faster than it should have, that's my mistake.

As Asp wandered off, blithely chattering away, Lorraine ground her teeth. Either he didn't appreciate the gravity of what they were watching, or didn't care. Either way, she wasn't happy. She had a real debate in her mind. She could grab him up by his collar and more or less shove his face in the trampled corpses along the road... Or she could start walking off without him. She wasn't sure which was more tempting.

In the end, leaving him won out. She didn't need to scream at a Kender in the middle of all of this. She needed to get away, and she wasn't going to wait for Asp to finish his inquiry.

"Let's.... let's get to Hoshi. Come on."

She started walking.

Zant inclined his head in agreement and followed. He wished to speak with Hoshi before they left the city and Magpie had its own reasons for wanting to see her.

Magpie merely nodded and followed after, continuing to carry the safebox even if Garick would decide to remain and investigate the march further.

Garick was quite undisturbed by the march, if slightly fascinated. He had never seen something like this, of this scale. As he walked, still helping Magpie with the load, he watched the march. He noticed Asp go off with the marching creatures and really wanted to go with him to see what the commotion was, but he was still helping Magpie with the chest, so he was a bit torn about what to do. Even still, it seemed like Asp was the only one going off, with everyone else heading to Hoshi's. He wondered if the kender would be okay by himself, but he figured on a plane so close to Mechanus, Asp couldn't really get into that much trouble that he didn't ask for. On continuing this line of reasoning, though, he realized that Asp just might be the type to ask for trouble. He watched as Asp continued trying to question the non-responsive modrons, and really wondered if he should go after him just to keep an eye on him.

"Hey, Magpie, are you sure you can carry this yourself?" As it nodded, Garick turned about and ran to catch up with Asp.

"So, what are you hoping to get out of these guys?" Garick asked Asp. "They don't look very talkative."

"I don't know," Asp said, "I'd kind of like to know what's making the whole event tick. Let's try someone else."

Deciding that the modrons weren't going to be talked into answering his questions, Asp turned his attentions to one of his fellow questioners. After all, if the modrons weren't answering anybody, then he couldn't very well be wasting the person's time.

"Not very talkative, are they?" he asked, "Does this happen often? It must do if they've got procedures for it. Then again, they'd have procedures if it happened once in a thousand years. Where do they normally march to?"

Outside Automata - The March

The other questioner, an older, inquisitive-looking human with short salt-and-pepper hair and a matching close-cut beard, glances towards Asp and Garick ever so briefly before turning his observation back to a marching monodrone, his brow furrowed in confusion. He speaks to the two in a clipped tone, his accent dotted with hints of Draconic. "Not often, no. The March is supposed to be every Great Cycle, 289 years. But the last one was barely 90 years ago, there's no reason why they should be marching now. It doesn't make any sense."

He sighs. "If everything else holds true, though, they'll be heading to Fortitude next. Then Arcadia, then Mount Celestia, and so on around the entirety of the Great Wheel until they return to Mechanus. It's usually...two, perhaps three years before they complete their entire circuit. No one has a clue why, and the modrons have never bothered to explain it. Personally, I've always thought they were trying to keep the arrangement of the Great Wheel stable. Which makes me quite worried about what this early one might mean, I'll admit now."

Automata

Zant and Lorraine take the lead in the trip to Hoshi, with Magpie following close behind, carrying the strongbox as carefully as possible. Walking quickly down the street, Hoshi spies them herself only a few blocks from her rented workshop, and rushes to meet them, her attention obviously elsewhere. "Did you hear that? What was all that? I heard something about modrons, yugoloth plots, an invading force, rumors are flying all over the city. Did you see what happened?"

Magpie had barely time to nod in response to Garick's question before the elf left off to follow Asp, and it quickly readjusted to carry the extra weight, but it managed. For the rest of the trip, it looked rather focused on the chest it was carrying, and when finally they met Hoshi it put it down very carefully, standing over it to make sure no one tried to pilfer it while they were there.

"There is a march, it would seem." the construct replied calmly to the distracted smith, "There are a large numbers of modrons walking away, and then seem to be in a hurry... not minding that they walk over the inhabitants of the city."

Lorraine shook her head.

"I... we couldn't stay. There was nothing we could do, and just watching people be trampled..."

She looks somewhat ill. She tried to distract herself with Hoshi, just meeting her for the first time now, but it was a difficult task. Still, on that note:

"Lorraine, by the way. Mutual friend of Zant and Magpie."

As the three describe the scene, Hoshi stares past them back towards Modron Way, frowning. "Damn...Awful way to go. Was there any sign of why? What the modrons were doing?" Shaking her head, she looks to Lorraine. "Bad situation to meet you in, but it's a pleasure. You're from the Guild too, I take it?"

"... Huh. That does sound kind of worrying," Asp said, mostly because that seemed like the sort of comment that was expected of him. He didn't sound anywhere near as worried as the potential end of reality should entail, "But if that was the case, wouldn't people be able to destabilise the planes by disrupting the march? You'd expect nihilists or the Doomguard to be laying ambushes every step of the way. Especially since the march always goes along the same route. Maybe it's a kind of massed, synchronised wanderlust? You know, like lemmings, only without the jumping off cliffs."

Outside Automata - The March

He shakes his head. "It might always head to the same destinations, but it doesn't always take the same route. It changes a little each time. Likely to keep portal usage distributed. Not to say that there aren't ambushes along the way, plenty of people are always eager to try and disrupt it to see what happens. What happens is usually they get driven off. At best. As...ridiculous as many take them to be, modrons are no more to be trifled with than any exemplar.

"You're not the only one to propose that theory, though. I've heard others theorize exactly that before. But no, I can't understand why modrons would feel wanderlust of that nature. They never show any other inclinations towards that end. There's no reason why a race of order would have whims. No, it must be something far more important than that, and there would be nothing more important than stabilizing reality. It'd go hand in hand with the purpose of Mechanus."

"They certainly seem to take the job seriously, whatever it is," Asp said, "It makes you wonder though, what other stuff's going on to keep the planes spinning behind the scenes. Maybe the march is just one of the more obvious processes." He somehow doubted that the modrons were solely responsible for keeping things running properly. There pretty well had to be analagous events originating on other planes. For the sake of balance, if nothing else. The planes, like Krynn, were big on balance.

Asp frowned thoughtfully, "Maybe that's it. Maybe one of those other events has been derailed, and the march has been brought forward to pick up the slack."

"That could very well be, but I haven't heard tell of any other major events recently. Still, there's always the chance it's important but subtle. It's always something to consider; I'll keep the possibility in mind."

He glances up towards the pair for an instant before his eyes return to his notes. "So how far are you two planning to follow? Are you caught up in the moment, or are you going to try for the entire circuit?""

Automata

She nods, frowning, and turns back away from the Way, eager to push onto another topic. "Well, whatever it is, it's outside of our concern now. I think I'm ready to get started, Magpie. Have you finished those plans you mentioned before?"

Magpie nodded and retrieved the folded up sketch it had been working on and gave it to Hoshi like it was the most expensive piece of drawing paper in the multiverse. Its green eyes seemed to dull down for a little before it nodded, its broken jaw wobbling slightly with the movement.

"It is... to the best of my knowledge. I am certain that if there are any faults, you will discover and correct them."

Garick hadn't planned on following the marching modrons any further than the city limits, if that far, but the question stuck him. He looked over at Asp to see what his answer was. The more he thought about it, though, the more it seemed like a fun little adventure. As he continued to consider it, his sense of the grandiose allowed him to envision marching with the modrons, fighting off would be assailants on the marchers. Then he realized the folly of his whimsies and came to his senses. More likely than not, following them would just lead him on an incredibly boring walk through the planes. He'd already done that before, and it wasn't nearly fun enough to make him want to do it again.

"Nah, probably not," he responded to the man. He again looked to Asp to see what he planned on doing.

Asp considered for a few moments. Taking a grand tour of the planes certainly sounded like fun, but it would mean abandoning his friends, and anyway, the modrons themselves would probably carry right on marching just like they were now, and Asp had a feeling that watching that for a good three years would get pretty boring.

"No, I don't think so," he said, "Though I might follow its progress. Getting ahead of the march shouldn't be too hard. How about you?"

Hoshi nods to Lorraine's offer as she looks over the sketch. "I'm sure there's something you could help with. Come along with us, and we'll find something you can contribute on."

Outside Automata - The March

"Oh, I'm sure I'll be following it for a time, but I haven't decided how long just yet. We'll see what happens, I suppose."

And if there's nothing else here, this seems like a good place to have the actual wrap-up. People can make their final posts, and then I'll post adventure XP and whatnot.

Garick decided that he should probably go and meet up with his new friends, and so left the scene of the march to go to Hoshi's. The events of the early march seemed quite interesting, and he'd have to keep an eye on it. If the planes were going to be falling apart, he wanted to know about it.

Magpie nodded in appreciation at Lorraine's offer to aid, then to Zant as well, before returning its attention to Hoshi, looking, if possible, even more nervous. Then it gave a shudder, and the brightness of its eyes faded back to the usual dull glow as it nodded again, more sure this time.

"Then... we shall proceed with the work? I... will contribute as much as I can with both knowledge and work, although I am unsure whether this experience will... be painful, or not."

Asp made sure to note down the route of the march before rejoining the others, filling them in on what little he'd learned. He made sure to note that he didn't personally think the planes were in any real danger, though it might be nice to know what had prompted this early march.

Automata

Asp and Garick return to the group, and together, everyone heads to Hoshi's, where she begins work on examining Magpie and crafting its - her - new body. Lorraine helps out where she can, contributing what she knows of constructs in general from her arcane experience. It will be a process far longer than a single day, however, and so with the mission complete, the party is free to return through the staircase to the guild, to rest and relax after the long fortnight away.

All right, since there was pretty much no combat of note here, it was all story, I'm going to go ahead and just award 6000 XP total to the lot of you for this whole adventure. Even Garick! People can get back to me for levelling needs and whatnot. In addition, there was the matter of the 16,000 gold reward as well, it's up to the rest of you if you want to cut Garick in on that as well, but I'm sure he'd appreciate it. And of course, there weren't any magical items or anything found here (Edit: Okay, one magical item, but it doesn't really count unless someone's eager to get taken over), so there's nothing else to add to the treasure list.

Second matter: Ripping Shini's Child's Play idea off, I'll be using an MVP system from here out. Each PC can vote for one person other than themselves that they think most deserve a special reward, and that player will receive an extra XP boost on top of the story award. Let me know your votes some time in the near future, and I'll post the result once I get a majority or once everyone checks in, whichever comes first.

Infinite Staircase

By serendipitous happenstance, the two split groups of travelers that have worked together so closely as of late return to the guild at close to the same time. And both sides have returned larger than they were when they left. From Automata, the guild has gained an odd fellow, Thomason of Hardby, a cleric of Zagyg formerly of the world of Oerth with a taste for practical jokes and a quick (yet somewhat abrasive) wit. He's eager to get himself involved, finding the entire location amusing in its utter ridiculousness, but his personality certainly seems the sort to not mesh well with all people. And from the Outlands, two new members have arrived, a young teenage goblin and an older human; unlike Thomason, both seem to be extremely reclusive fellows, not even giving their names to others. They both seem a bit nervous about the surroundings, jumpy even, with the older man the worst of it. They have the look of people that have been through a lot, but they seem little willing to talk about it, or anything for that matter.

Of course, the increased membership is a small piece of news compared to the biggest event to hit the planes in months. The talk of the Guild by far is the plane-shaking news that the great Modron March, an event normally known to occur only once every 289 years, has just hit the planes 150 years early; something indeed quite strange for such an orderly race. Of course, the Automata party was there to see their arrival first-hand, and perhaps they have tales to tell about it. It's rare that such a major story hits the planes, but given the impact the March often has, it's certain to continue to be the source of rumors for months if not years to come.

On the other hand, there's also murmurs of an artifact-level device devoted to healing discovered by the Outlands party that, as far as the Automata travelers knew were merely seeking out a cure for Shawn. This is almost certainly related, but the murmurs also speak of mind flayers, and buried villages? There must be more to the story there indeed.

Of course, there's certainly news not related to either of the two swirling about. The crusades of the paladin Daneel are still on the minds of all, as he continues his scouring of Baator in the name of the Harmonium; more for the fact that he hasn't been killed yet than anything, but he's actually made minor success in pulling land back into the Outlands from the Nine Hells, a feat not oft accomplished. There's been a minor skirmish on Magma between Dao and Baatezu forces over fireflow. A recent Blood War spillover into the Outlands has led to the destruction of two more Indep villages near Curst. And plenty more from across the planes.

We're between missions now, so if you have any specific plans, let me know. Otherwise I'll work something up for you. Right now, what I've got is Lorraine's helping out Hoshi with Magpie, and Magpie herself is occupied away from the guild as well - the work will take about two weeks or so, so you've got at least that much time before the next excursion. And Spleen, I believe Theller is planning on working on a way to bring the altar into the Guild? If not, let me know about that.

Also, don't forget the bonus XP rules. I am making a slight modification to them, though. The bonuses for plothooks still hold. However, if the plothook ends up actually being used for the next mission, you get double. This doesn't mean only a couple people have the possibility for getting this, though. If two people cooperate to mesh their plothooks together, if one person hangs a plothook off of another person's, or even if one person gets to me about a potential secret hurdle that I can work into one plothook's adventure, and it gets used, you get that double bonus. :D (And don't forget it applies to making up an NPC too, if you want to make up a friend, a contact, a merchant, or even an enemy in the guild in your post. Do that, and if you want me to play them, good, if you want to play them yourself, also good! You get the XP either way, so long as it's someone that actually shows up with dialog.)

Also, as a between-mission extra bit, 5% bonus if you invent a piece of planar news and work it into your post. It can be something related to a news item already mentioned or something entirely different, but nothing too majorly cross-planar, just on the level of the final paragraph items in the above post. Or even lower in planar significance; maybe one of you still gets a broadsheet from back home and keeps up on local happenings or something.

Oh, and final bit, for those that don't read both threads (which I assume is most of you): congratulations to Seethe and Rosalyn for being the MVP in Other Journies for the last mission.

Garick wandered about the Staircase, thinking about the events he saw in Automata. What does the march mean? He wondered what it all meant, if the march was something that helped stabilize the planes. It didn't make much sense to him, but he was no expert on the Planes. He walked about, gathering what information he could about what was going on on the different planes, and was more than a little ready to get off the Staircase and go on some other mission.

"If there is a limit to be found on its healing powers, it is high," Theller said. "I watched it knit the wounds of a full-grown human looking out death's window, a goblin woman quite injured, and myself and three others who had been fighting in small skirmishes that day. This is not to mention, of course, the healing it lent to the mind flayer we had been chasing, which seemed quite healthy again after several serious injuries." He decided not to mention the effect it had on Shawn; it wasn't his business to go around informing people of his young friend's strange tendency to turn into lightning. "Perhaps if we call it into the Guild's service we will find some upper limit, but I believe that if it can used to save a life, even once, we should do all in our power to bring it here and see that goal through." His piece spoken, Theller straightened, flexed his wings (growing stronger every day!), and prepared to listen to the response of the wizard he had sought for consultation about the altar. He silently reminded himself to see about researching whatever "Thoon" was once he had seen the business with the altar squared away...the strange egg of fluid, which reminded Theller of the goblin woman's stories about the Thoon-aligned mind flayers drawing fluids out of living and nonliving things, Theller kept in his tent and checked on often while holding a loaded crossbow (having recovered the crossbow he had dropped while chasing the hunting beast in the false town).

Infinite Staircase - Theller

Theller's sage, a local artificer, nods thoughtfully, pondering the properties Theller has described to him. "And you say it seemed to have been part of the ground, and not of Illithid manufacture? What of the chamber it was found in, was there anything of note about it that you noticed? If it's as powerful as you've described, it must have come from somewhere, and it will likely be quite difficult to cut away and transport. Knowing as much as possible about it in advance will give us the best chance to do so. Is there anything else you noted about it that could be relevant?"

Garick

Taking his time, Garick strolls around the tent "city" that makes up the Guild headquarters, one of the few bastions of near-civilization that might actually meet his approval. Picking up snatches of conversation here and there, he does his best to take in the state of the planes, his attention so pulled that he doesn't even notice the person ahead of him until they've collided.

An older man, in human terms appearing in his early-50s, his physique is muscled enough that if not for the slight point of his ears that belie his elven blood, he could easily pass as pure human. Dark black hair and a well-kept mustache frame his face, and he grins good-naturedly as he steps away from Garick, retrieving his wooden box from the ground. "Ah, sorry about that. I probably shouldn't be walking while distracted. Say, I don't think I've seen you around here before. New member, or passing visitor?"

Votes are in for the Automata MVP: congratulations to Kelne! For the award, Asp gets 750 XP.

In addition, Theller gets 500 XP for the NPC.

On Ysgard, many centuries ago on this date, a sect was founded. The Ring-Givers. Believing that no good deed goes unrewarded, they offer all to others, knowing that karma will eventually repay them their gifts. And indeed, this day, this anniversary, is marked on Ysgard as a day of giving by nearly all who dwell there.

Of course, Ysgard holds more than the Norse pantheon that grants it its name. One of the great planar paths, the Infinite Staircase, holds its base in the realm of the goddess Selune of Toril, within the first layer of Ysgard. And every year on this date, an unknown guild member, his identity kept secret, travels under cloak of invisibility from tent to tent, leaving a small satchel of minor gifts. No one knows who it is, or even if it is always the same person. No one's ever even seen a satchel left behind. But all appreciate the generosity of this mysterious figure.

Merry Christmas! Every character receives a small satchel of potion-candies! Small chocolates of various flavors that function as third-strength potions. 2 marshmallow fluff Cure Light Wounds, 2 caramel Bless, 2 raspberry cream Detect Magic, and 2 praline Mage Armor. Enjoy!

Garick had heard snatches of conversations about the random goings-on in the planes. It seemed like the Modron March was the least of the worries of the planes. While he'd been wandering about the planes all those years, he had come across incidents, but most of the were small things. For the most part he took the stability of the Planes for granted. Sure, he'd helped to save a village here, or helped to keep a destructive artifact out of the hands of a warlock there, but they were all hilariously small situations when it came to the grand scheme of things. He wondered if things always sounded this dire from the Staircase, or if this was an unusual time. All these thoughts made Garick quite surprised by the sudden appearance of the elf. He was usually quite good about keeping an eye on his surroundings, but he must have gotten too involved in his thoughts.

"Oh, no, that was my fault. I've got a lot on my mind." Garick smiled amicably and offered a hand, "My name's Garick, and yeah, I'm a new member. Just got back from my first mission."

Magpie had spent the short time since their return from Automata to pack up whatever tools it had purchased, gotten or found (and repaired), fastening them on a shabby-looking leather-belt with straps for each and every one of the hand-wieldable tools, the rest going into a sack. Anyone asking the construct where it was going, or what it was doing, was met with a polite, but declining reply in the sense of "You'll see".

Before leaving back to Automata, however, the warforged made a beeline towards one of the smithies set up in the area, ringing the bell hung up outside the pavilion-tent of Jusne Malthoof, the bariaur blacksmith operating the small business.

"Excuse me, master Malthoof, are you available?"

"Certainly not of illithid manufacture," Theller confirmed. "The chamber was not as the illithids found it, clearly. Someone, a great and powerful mind flayer, was...kept there. In a pool. There were specimens of various sorts in jars on the walls. It was...disturbing. But the markings on the altar were not their markings, and the power from it was magical...and blinding. It looked made, but I could not see a seam between it and the ground, so perhaps it was carved out of the rock where it stood."

Infinite Staircase - Garick

"Well, it's always good to see new blood." He smiles, offering his hand in a shake, and shifting the box under his arm. "Barclay. So where do you hail from, then? Having any troubles settling in yet? I've been part of the Guild for years now, so if you need any help, feel free to ask. Of course, the same goes for most anyone in the Guild; we're always happy to help one another out."

Magpie

Stepping out from his tent, the bariaur grins down at his guest. "Ah, Magpie, it's good to see you again. Say, your sort tends not to sleep, aye? Have you heard or seen anything calling itself the Spirit? The tots have been clamoring about it all day, but no one else I've talked to has heard a thing."

Looking over him, he notices the warforged's preparations. "Say, you planning on heading out again? Didn't I hear you just came back? You ought to rest yourself; travel's well and good, but you should spend some time settling between trips."

Theller

"Oh, my! Blinding magic, you say?" He offers a small smile. "Well, m'boy, it sounds that you haven't found just some enchanted relic in this city. Rather, I'd say you've found a true artifact here. And if that's the case, then yes, I doubt we will be easily capable of transporting it. It's likely far tougher and more resilient than true stone if what you say is true; most artifacts tend to heal themselves of damage naturally, in fact."

He thinks to himself, drumming his fingers upon his desk. "Of course, just knowing of such things can be valuable in and of itself. You don't run across these things often, after all. I'd say keep this in the Guild for now, until we can find out more. What can you tell me of the markings on the altar? Did you recognize them? Take a rubbing of them, even?"

750 XP to Magpie for the NPC.

Magpie nodded rather gravely at the question and spoke in a tone fairly common to its old voice, the jaw having been hastily fixed to at least some semblance of its former self.

"It is good to see you too, master Malthoof. I have not heard of this Spirit and I have not seen him or her... although I was visited last night with gifts." it took out the little satchel to show it to the bariaur, "Or so I would assume they are. I have not seen this kind of... food before. I was told they were a gift, but I cannot understand why I was given it."

The construct remains silent for a little while more, then nods, "I just returned from Automata, this is true, but I have unfinished business there. I intend to return here once more after it is done, to request that I be allowed to study your art. However, before I do so, I would like to request that you join me back to Automata. I have... some changes to my form I wish to do, and I was asked to bring anyone talented in blacksmithing with me back, and you are the most skilled one I know."
