"Of course," the sorceress agreed. "That was my plan all along."

"You had better... attack first... so we can make sure you don't... turn on us," Kilisha told the sorceress, getting her own bow ready and trained on the succubus. "Try anything... funny, and you'll have... two arrows in you throat. Now... un-bar the door."

As the sorceress obediently removed the bar from the door, Kilisha kept her eyes focused on her. Once the bar was off, Kilisha grew even more tense.

"Now... do your thing," she instructed.

With a silent nod, the sorceress gripped the handle of the door, took a deep breath and exhaled, and threw the door open. Behind the door was a wide and tall room, with a thin stairway around the edge, in which stood eight incubi, four wielding swords and four wielding crossbows. Just as they spun around to face the intruder, the sorceress hurled a globe of bluish energy into their midst. An instant later, the globe dissipated and a ring of blue energy pulsed out from it, sending all eight of the demons crashing into the walls, producing a crunching sound when they hit. After falling to the floor, none of them rose again.

After throwing the globe, the succubus spun to the side, putting the wall once again between herself and the room beyond. An instant later, four arrows came from above and crashed to the floor where she had stood. Then, the sound of a door crashing open was heard from the right wall of the room and four more sword-wielding incubi came storming in. They immediately came towards the door the intruders stood behind.

Xiao Long stepped in through the doorway and let loose an arrow, then dove for whatever cover she could find, nocking an arrow along the way. She then let loose another arrow at one of the sword wielding incubi.

Seryntas stood just inside the doorway so the incubi would have to come to him one by one. He held his sword ready for the first.

(OOC: The doorway trick is something I learned playing NetHack.)

The first of Xiao Long's arrows struck an incubus in the shoulder. The wood elf then managed to get below the stone staircase at the edge of the room before the archers at the top of the tower could train their bows on her. Her next arrow pierced into another incubus' stomach, though its force was reduced by the incubus' leather armor enough that the wound was not fatal.

Kilisha followed Xiao Long through the doorway so that the girl wouldn't be in the room alone with the incubi. As she dashed through, she released her own arrow into the leg of the closest incubus, sending the demon falling to the ground. She then reached Xiao Long's side, drew her knife, and turned to face the enemies.

The sorceress was the next through the door, though instead of running for cover under the stairs, she rose from the floor, a pair of leathery bat-like wings suddenly materializing on her back, and began to fly toward the top of the tower. As she continued upward toward the large round opening at the top of the room, above which the tower's archers stood, a strong wind began to whirl about her. The archers fired down at her, but their arrows were blown aside by the wind.

Two of the three sword-wielding incubi chased after Xiao Long and Kilisha while the third continued to the door to engage Seryntas.

Xiao Long nocked an arrow to her bow, then turned to Kilisha. She saw thet her knife was drawn, and nodded towards the succubus. She then leveled the arrow right where the incubi soldiers would appear, just past the edge of the staircase that was guarding them from view. She waited, planning on fireing the arrow at point blank range into the face of whatever beastie shows up.

The first incubus to come around the staircase didn't have time to react to the sight of Xiao Long's bow before the arrow drove into its face. The demon fell backwards and landed on the ground dead. As the next incubus then came around the stairway, Kilisha struck quickly with her knife, stabbing the weapon into the shoulder of the demon's sword arm. The incubus reflexively dropped the sword and grabbed its shoulder, so Kilisha had no trouble striking again into the demon's throat.

Thinking the fact that Seryntas hadn't come through the door like his two companions a sign of hesitation, the demon moving to engage him broke into a charge, hoping to catch the bounty hunter with a low slash before the human could strike with his sword. The demon, however, had underestimated Seryntas' readiness. Its reward for this miscalculation was that it charged straight into Seryntas' own swing, unable to stop itself in time. As its upper half hit the floor, the incubus was able to examine the soles of its own boots just before passing into darkness.

The sorceress, meanwhile, reached the top of the tower. Eight archers surrounded her, but their bows were useless as their arrows could not get through the wind that whirled around the mage. The succubus glanced down for a moment to make sure none of the mercenaries were standing out in the open below her, then raised her hand and made a spinning motion with her finger. At that, the winds about her began whirling much more fiercely.

Now the incubus Kilisha had shot in the leg was the only enemy remaining alive in the room. A second later, though, several incubi and succubi came hurtling down from above, crashing down on the floor with juicy crunching sounds. As the sword-wielder tried to drag himself back to the door, a succubus landed on him and he moved no farther.

As the sorceress floated back down from above, Kilisha emerged from behind the stairway to examine the broken demons that lay about the floor, slitting the throats of a few when she found that they managed to still be alive, however barely.

Seryntas regarded the sorceress silently for a moment, then spoke, "Good work; you'll be useful to us." He turned to Xiao Long.

"If she can do that to them, then I don't want to know what she'd do to us if you take that bow of yours off of her for even one second, got it, kid? I'm half tempted to tie her hands to her side, but then if we're attacked suddenly she can't do anything to help."

"I got your point," Xiao Long said to Seryntas, looking at the smears on the floor that were the demons. That sorceress had taken out five, maybe six demons in one fell swoop. Kind of made her wish she could do magic. "Wonder how effective my arrows would be against her, though. Obviously, these demons couldn't do a thing about her."

(OOC: While working on Xiao Long's Philsys sheet, her character and actiosn will be changing a bit so, bear with it. Thanks.)

Xiao Long laughs at this and nods. She put a new arrow to her bow, then went up the stairs to scout a littl bit ahead and see what was at the top of the staircase, and if there were any hallways or doorways, she'd peek down them, keeping her head down to avoid being seen by anyone down said hallways.

Kilisha watched Xiao Long ascend the stairs, not sure how the wood elf was going to manage to keep the sorceress at arrowpoint at the same time as she was focusing on scouting ahead. Loading her bow too, she pointed another arrow at the sorceress just to be safe. The sorceress let out a resigned sigh as she landed, the wings on her back disappearing as quickly as they had appeared, and returned to her inoffensive stance with her arms at her sides and her hands unmoving.

Aside from the door the group had entered through, there were five other doors in the room. One of these doors, through which the demons the group had just fought had entered, was on the ground floor. Kilisha pushed this door closed in case any more patrolling demons wandered into the hall beyond. The other four doors were located higher up the stairway, two on the second tier directly above the ones on the ground level and two on the third tier directly above the ones on the second. Three of these doors opened to more empty hallways.

The fourth opened to the waiting hands of another massive orc. These hands rushed forth to grab Xiao Long by the throat and lift her off the ground in their strangling grasp.

The orc hand startled Xiao Long, and as the steely hand grasped her neck, she dropped her bow, the wood clanging against the floor udnerneath her. As the orc raised her off the floor by her jaw, her feet kicked about wlidly. She grabbed the orc's hands and tugged as hard as she could, but the muscles in the monster's wrist and forearm were bundled up like steel. She attempted to kick the orc while dangling, but not to much effect either.

Help... she thought as she began to fade.

Seryntas heard the tumult and turned to see what was going on. What he did next he did on instinct, leaping into sudden action to charge up the steps two at a time, sword raised and a war cry ripping out of his throat. "Hang on, kid!" he yelled, barreling up the staircase.

Kilisha turned pale at the sight of what was happening. She continued to hold her bow on the sorceress, but she quickly began to doubt if that was what she should have been doing. The sorceress had already helped the mercenaries twice and could have attacked them either time had she chosen to.

The sound of Seryntas' shout made up Kilisha's mind. She didn't know if the heavily armored bounty hunter would make it to Xiao Long in time, and she couldn't stand the thought of what would happen if he didn't. A sort of rage welling up inside, Kilisha left the sorceress and charged up the stairs.

Once she got close to the top of the first flight, she could see that she had a clear shot at the orc's legs. She didn't want to risk hitting Xiao Long, but she didn't know if she could make it up the stairs quickly enough either.

Deciding that time was the greater risk, Kilisha pulled back her arrow and took careful aim as low on the orc's leg as possible. As she was about to release, she saw the sorceress, wings having reappeared, levitating up to deal with the orc as well.

But as soon as the succubus reached Kilisha's level, she stopped her ascent and turned to face the mercenary succubus. Kilisha was purplexed by this for a moment. Then, seeing the sorceress making a gesture with her hands, she quickly moved to switch her aim to the spellcaster. But before Kilisha's arrow was in line with the winged demoness, the sorceress' hand thrust forth and a burst of electricity coursed from it and through Kilisha's body, bringing with it a wave of shocking pain. Kilisha's bow dropped from her hands and the succubus fell and tumbled down the stairs back to the floor. A few seconds later, her mind faded from consciousness, but her muscles continued to twitch and spasm.

Watching Kilisha's fall, the orc laughed loudly. Then, loosening his grip on Xiao Long, he turned her around and grasped her by the shoulders with one arm. With the other hand, he drew Xiao Long's swords from their places, tossed one away, and held the other to her throat.

"Surrender... human!" the orc called down to Seryntas.

Just as the image of the of the orc's disgusting face faded into darkness, they faded back in as he let go of her neck. She coughed violently, the air rushing back into her lungs, and a great sense of relief rushed back into her just as the pain in her shoulder and the feel of cold hard steel lay against her neck registered in her mind.

Think of something, quick, she thought, but the lack of air prevented her from thinking completely straight.

Ignoring the situation above, the sorceress dropped back down to the floor where Kilisha lay. She sat down on Kilisha's waist and placed her hand on Kilisha's forehead. A white glow then washed over Kilisha's body and the succubus' spasms stopped. A moment later, Kilisha opened her eyes, but she remained dazed and confused and lacked the strength to try to push the sorceress off of herself.

The orc continued to grasp Xiao Long by the shoulders, holding the wood elf's own blade to her throat. The orc decided it liked Xiao Long's sword. Aside from its axe, the only blade the orc possessed was a long knife that was clearly inferior to the elf's weapon. The creature hadn't even bothered taking that weapon from its belt...

Seryntas stopped, paralyzed with indecision. If he kept running, he knew he'd never make it in time to help the kid, and there was nothing Kilisha could do or anything he could do for her; turning his back on Xiao Long and the orc was a surefire way to make a bad situation worse, especially because Xiao Long seemed to be in much more immediate danger. He attempted to hide his doubt. "Let the kid go and maybe I'll make this easy on you!" he yelled at the orc.

"Do whatever you have to!" Xiao Long said to Seryntas, "Go help Kilisha. I think I've got this."

She then lifted up her leg almost to the top of her head and slammed it as hard as she could backwards...

...between the orc's legs...

...where it hurt.

The kick took the orc by surprise. Armored in that area only by leather, the impact elicited a loud grunt of pain and caused it to accidentally drop the sword it held. For its own part, it would have been ready to let go of the elf at that moment. However, being under orders to keep its prisoner held hostage no matter what, it maintained its grip. Of course, that grip was severely weakened.

Reaching into her robe, the sorceress produced an ornate dagger with a long blade and several gems set into the hilt that appeared to be of the same type as the large crystal Kilisha had seen in the center of the castle when she had looked down on it from the hill outside. Kilisha's eyes widened at the sight of the blade and she brought her hands up to try to guard against it. But Kilisha's arms had no strength in them, and the sorceress caught both of them in one hand and forced them out of the way.

The sorceress set the dagger down for a second to remove one of the shoulder pads of Kilisha's leather armor and roll Kilisha over onto her stomach. She then picked the dagger back up, reached her arms around Kilisha, and raised her up from the floor to hold her tightly against herself.

"Don't be scared," the sorceress whispered into Kilisha's ear. "I'm not going to take your life. That would be a tragic waste... of a resource."

This reassurance didn't eliminate Kilisha's fears, and the way the sorceress seemed to be playing with her made her feel indignant on top of that. Demons always played with her like that. She tried to push away from the sorceress, or at least writhe out of her grasp, but she couldn't escape.

Then Kilisha suddenly felt a sharp and intense pain in the lower left side of her stomach as the sorceress inserted the dagger. The cry she let out in response was weak, almost inaudible, but it was the loudest scream she could produce at the moment. The pain was soon joined by another similar pain as the sorceress sank her fangs into Kilisha's shoulder. Aside from her blood, Kilisha could feel something else draining away, though she didn't know what it was. Somehow, she didn't feel like it was something she would miss.

Noticing the orc's misfortune above, the sorceress stood up with Kilisha.

"That fool," she snorted. "I'll have to settle for one out of three now. At least you're the one I really needed."

Biting down on Kilisha's shoulder again, she began backing towards a door.

Giving Xiao Long a nod, confident that the kid had it under control (For now, Seryntas thought), Seryntas turned and ran, armor bouncing and jangling, after Kilisha and the sorceress, greatsword hefted over his shoulder as he sprinted to the door.

Xiao Long was surprised by how much the orc was able to hold up to such pain. Experience had told her that any male, no matter how hardy, was extremely vulnerable there.

Wonder what'll happen if...

She kicked it again. And again. And again

The three additional kicks finally convinced the orc to let go of Xiao Long. It normally would have just doubled over and been finished at that point. However, there was something unnatural in its mind, compelling it. It had to recapture... no, now it had to destroy the elf. Drawing the knife from its belt, it rushed at her with a powerful slash.

Through eyes filled with tears from the pain, Kilisha looked up at Seryntas as he approached. The sorceress continued drinking every last drop she could of whatever it was she was draining from the succubus, until Seryntas was through the door. Then, reluctantly, she removed her fangs from Kilisha's shoulder.

"Want your little demon girl back?" the sorceress asked the human. "I can't convince you to let me keep her, can I?"

The sorceress made a small gesture with her fingers and a large chest appeared on the floor in front of Seryntas.

"Name your price," the sorceress offered. "Whatever you want will be in there."

Xiao Long was finaly allowed to drop to the floor and when she did, she immediately tumbled away, picking up her fallen sword along the way. She came and faced the orc just as it charged at her. She held up her sword to defend herself, but just at the last moment, Xiao Long attempted to sidestep the rushed attack.

Being in such discomfort that it would not normally have attacked but being forced to attack anyway had resulted in the orc acting on blind instinct. It rushed at the elf at full strength, completely mindless of any consideration but the need to expose her insides. That being the case, the time it took the creature to either stop or redirect its momentum after its target had moved out of the way was relatively long. In fact, it didn't realize that she had dodged aside until it had already stepped over the side of the stairway.

A second later, there was another smear on the floor below.

Seryntas looked at the chest at his feet and grinned, imagining what he could find inside.

Money...
Jewels...
Beautiful women...
A magic sword...

Fucker probably weighs a bit, whatever's in there, right?

Seryntas grabbed the chest by its handles and attempted to heft it over his head; if he succeeded but it was heavy, he planned to throw it against the nearest wall, hoping to break it into a thousand pieces and bellow, "What I want don't fit in a chest, sweetheart." If it turned out to be actually rather light, what little romance was in Seryntas's heart wouldn't allow him to do anything but use it as an improvised weapon against the one who tried to use it to tempt him.

The chest was rather heavy, so it was thrown against the wall. However, the number of pieces it broke into was only about ten. Even if it had contained anything before, nothing came out of it now.

"That's too bad..." the sorceress said disappointedly, keeping Kilisha between herself and Seryntas. "This pretty little thing represents the pinnacle of the Circle of Zhalzath's work. She'll be hard to let go of. But if you want her that badly, I suppose I've taken a good enough sample of their magic to serve my immediate purposes. You can have her. For now."

The sorceress pulled the knife out of Kilisha's stomach and shoved her forward toward Seryntas. Still having no strength, Kilisha immediately stumbled and dropped to the floor. The sorceress then raised the dagger up into the air, the gems set in it now glowing a dark reddish color.

Meanwhile, another cloud of black mist rose from the orc that had just fallen to its demise. But instead of dissipating, it this time rushed through the door, past Seryntas, and came to swirl around the glowing dagger. The sorceress made a motion with her hand as if to throw the dagger, but she held onto it. However, the mist rushed back away from the blade and down into the floor in front of the sorceress.

The section of the floor the mist entered suddenly jutted up and formed itself into a tall, thin, humanoid shape made of stone. This golem immediately put its fists up and advanced toward Seryntas, opening with a strong jab at the human's face.

At the same time, the sorceress' wings appeared again and she rose from the floor, backing away quickly as she went up. By the time her boots were about two feet above the floor, she was already a good ten feet away. At this point, she turned and sped away down the hall extremely quickly.

Seryntas, no stranger to taking punches to his unprotected face, let himself go limp just before the punch struck rather than absorb the blow with his face. His nose was still bleeding heavily and probably broken (having been the recipient of a few broken noses in his time, Seryntas knew what it felt like, and this was a good candidate), but at least he still had two working eyes and all of the teeth he had entered the fortress with. Of course, now he was on his back looking up at the golem, gathering his strength to spring to his feet and strike back. How'm I gonna do this, though? the bounty hunter wondered silently. Fucker's made o' stone.

While Seryntas was staring at the golem, a few arrows pinged off the stone golem's face. At the end of the hall, Xiao Long stood there, raining arrows on the golem to draw its attention away from Seryntas.

After seeing the orc fall over the stairs, Xiao Long had slumped onto the ground in a seated position, catching her breath. She looked at her sword and thanked her father again for having left them. Her father had been a formidable halfling warrior, but the swords had been just a bit larger than those used by most halflings. This made them the perfect size for his half-halfling half-elf daughter. She smirked at the memory of her father, then sheathed it.

She took the stairs two at a time, arriving just in time to see the cloud of black mist rise out of the orc and flee down the hallway, where she heard Seryntas's voice. She collected her father's other sword, the one the dead orc still held in its hands, and sheathed it. She was sure she'd need her father's protection again. She then strung up her bow, nocked an arrow to it, and stepped into the hallway.

As she fired the small projectiles at the golem, she thought about her plan, or lack thereof. Her main strategy was just to annoy the golem enough to get it to chase her. She was sure she could outrun a giant hunk of stone. How fast could it be?

(Rolling dice for golem's annoyance. Result: 14)

Though none of the arrows actually drove into the golem, they did leave scratches on the surface of its face that were the equivalent of papercuts to it. Obviously, this was something of a nuissance to the monster. Forgetting that Seryntas even existed, the thing took off after Xiao Long. As it turned out, it was faster than Xiao Long probably expected. She would be able to outrun it, but she would have to run hard. And she would have no guarantee that it would tire.

(OOC: Joe and I are pretty sure "halfling father, elf mother" is the final form of Xiao Long's geneology.)

Seryntas scrambled to his feet and grabbed his dropped sword, resolving not to touch his bent, purple nose for a while. He watched Xiao Long leading away the golem for a moment, once again impressed with the little warrior's skill and apparently boundless courage. "Keep him moving, kid! I'm gonna check on Kilisha."

He moved purposefully but couldn't keep a wobble out of his step as he rushed to where Kilisha was. The constant fighting of the day was wearing hard on Seryntas's body, and his broken nose wasn't helping. He bent carefully by her fallen form and unbuckled one of his gauntlets, using his exposed hand to check her vital signs, not entirely sure what he was looking for on a succubus.

As Xiao Long ran up the stairs, she realized the golem was actually quite fast. She stopped on the stairs and watched it race up the steps toward her, then dove through the golem's feet, trying to confuse the consruct. Xiao Long knew she'd need Seryntas's help to be able to bring this thing down.

"Take your time," she said to Seryntas, her voice already heavy with panting, "I'm not in much of a rush."

(OOC: And yes, I'm pretty sure I"m going to pin it down as Halfling father, elven mother. Seems the best explanation for all the strange things I came up with when I was 14.

Jeez, this RP's been going for a long time.)

The golem brought its fists down at Xiao Long as she dove under it, but it hit only the stairs. It then spun around and hurled a clumsy kick at her, throwing itself off balance in the process.

Kilisha was still alive anyway. She also was apparently conscious, as she seemed to be quietly sobbing. Feeling Seryntas' hand, she stopped crying and looked up at him, wishing she could say something, but not capable of speaking at an audible volume.

Her visible injuries included the bite and the stab wound as well as several small electrical burns from the lightning blast. The first two wounds were bleeding still, but nothing vital had been damaged. The worst effect the sorceress had left behind was the sapped strength of Kilisha's muscles.

Seryntas looked up at Kilisha for a moment and over to where Xiao Long and the golem were doing battle, then back down to Kilisha, wishing there was something he could do to help heal her injuries but knowing he had no ability there. "You sit tight, okay? The kid's keeping that golem warmed up for me." He patted her companionably on the shoulder and gave her a wink, before strapping his gauntlet back on and picking up his sword. "Hang on, kid, I'm on my way!" he shouted, rushing in the direction of the girl's fight with the golem, preparing to see whether a hack to the torso would do more damage to the stone man or to the well-honed edge of his greatsword.

Xiao Long didn't even notice the kick as she rushed away from the Golem as fast as she could. She turned aroun djust as Seryntas dove past her, then she unsheathed her sword and decided to see if her blades would do antyhing against the golem as well.

Seryntas' and Xiao Long's swords struck hard against the golem's torso. Seryntas' blade cut about an inch into the monster and Xiao Long's cut was about an eighth as deep.

The golem wasn't stair-worthy. This fact was what brought about the biggest effect of their attack: the force of the powerful blow from Seryntas and the added force of Xiao Long's attack knocked the creature the rest of the way off balance. The thing teetered over the side of the stairs, then dropped off.

It slammed into the floor, sending several cracks through the stone and itself. As it climbed back to its feet, its head fell off. After that, it took a few steps toward the bottom of the stairs, then collapsed.

The black mist rose back out of the golem's body, this time to dissipate.

Xiao Long took a deep sigh of relief, then slumped to the floor, this time truly exhausted. She lay out on her back spread eagly, her swords dropping from her hands.

"How's she doing?" she asked, not getting up or looking at Seryntas. She stared at the ceiling, at the lanterns flickering and giving off the warm glow that illuminated the chamber that might have been her tomb. She sighed again.

"Weak, but she'll live." Seryntas stood over Xiao Long and looked down at her. "You've got a set of guts, kid, like I don't see every day. What'd you say your name was, again?"

Kilisha still lay in the hallway where Seryntas had left her, not bothering trying to move, as it was still no use. She had heard the loud crash followed by the silence, and knew that meant the fight with the golem was over. A few seconds later, she heard Xiao Long's voice followed by Seryntas'. That was relieving, as it meant they had both come through relatively unharmed.

With her worries calmed, she closed her eyes and let herself rest, waiting patiently for someone to come and retrieve her.

Xiao Long picked herself up from the floor, sheathing her swords tiredly. "Xiao Long, though I've already told you this before, you big oaf." She got up from the floor and trudged oevr to the hallway where Kilisha was. She sat down, leaning against the wall, next to Kilisha's still form. She knelt over, listening for breathin, and was relieved to hear her drawing breath.

"Good thing she's still alive," she said, her voice suddenly taking on a more serious tone than they'd heard before. Her voice suddenly sounded her age. "We'll stay here until Kilisha's able to at least walk. We won't be able to move anywhere until she's alright." She then slumped a little, her face very heavy and tired.

Seryntas stoically accepted the girl's taunt. "Xiao Long, then."

Then, after the suggestion about staying put: "Bad idea," Seryntas said. "Not here, too out in the open, ye know? Come on, I'll pick her up and we'll find someplace where we won't be bothered for a few minutes or however long she needs."
