Pausing for a bit, he quickly decides to focus on the middle of the five. Chasing after him, he keeps a general look on the other four, tracking them as long as they remain in sight.

Meanwhile, Greg decides to try things out a bit. He's a ghost, and he's flying just by thinking about it, so is his speed truly limited? Pushing himself, he tries to put on an even quicker pace, hoping to catch up with this apparent murderer.

Update: Plot hits the fan soon.

Unread postby Endesu » Wed Mar 21, 2007 4:10 am

Kelne would find himself drawing close to the exit from the dream world... and none too soon, as the very world around him appeared to be wavering, as if under the influence of some undue amount of heat.

It was around this time, as well, that Justin's airship was just now arriving over the Forbidden Plains on Gaera. It was at this exact moment that Justin fixed 32 with a harsh glare, as if daring him to press his point further. "Of course I am. Why wouldn't I be feeling all right?" He seemed not to make anything unusual of his prior behavior...

And it was at this very moment that Justin somehow sent a telepathic message out to Kelne, one that reverberated in the dream world, much like a detached echo.

"Kelne, are you still there, or not? If so, please respond..."

***

It was at this time that the five figures split in vastly different directions. Two seemed to dive back and make a beeline right back towards Doma. One headed east. One west. The one in the middle appeared to be somehow keeping his pace above Greg's, despite the fact that the ghost was in no way limited by physical impediment. Odd...

Stopping abruptly, frowning about the as-of-yet failure to catch up with the figure, he lets this one go. Turning around, he begins buzzing back towards Doma himself, trying to spot those two figures once more as he picks up as much speed as he can on the flight back.

Perhaps owing to the cruel sense of humor of the Fates, if nothing else, a figure in a cloak abruptly poofed into existence just ahead of Greg, more or less stopping his forward progression dead.

A closer examination of this figure would reveal a somewhat worn cloak, a hood just barely hiding what appeared to be a skeletal profile, and a rather thin physique. A rather sharp scythe was gripped within one of its fairly bony hands.

"Excuse me, you're Gregory Campbell, right?"

In Greg's life, he's oft caught the attention of a number of people. And his name, or its various stand-ins, gets distributed every once in a while, perhaps a bit further than he'd like. This is a question he's heard all too often for his tastes. And lucky for him or not, by now, his response to any query of this nature has become almost at the level of instinct by now.

"...Who?"

"Oh, ha ha ha. I'm sure that was funny the first time you tried it. This most certainly isn't the thousandth time I've heard it. Ha ha ha. Ha." The tone of this response, in addition to the laughter, appeared to be about as forced and dry as could possibly be managed by a voice.

"Seriously, though. I've been keeping tabs on you, seeing as how you died and all. And it's my job to take you to the next world. Now, are we going to make this easy, or are you going to needlessly drag this out?"

"...Hmph." Frowning, he looks off toward Doma, before glancing back towards the apparant reaper.

"Well...all well and good, that, but I've heard more than a few stories about this sort of thing, living in Doma and all. Isn't there some unfinished business, violent magically-charged death clause in there? You've been keeping tabs on me, I'd say that certainly applies. Certainly ghostly enough as it is anyway."

The skeletal reaper appeared to sigh. "Oh, don't tell me that you're one of the 'chosen ones', selected to save the planet, and that your death by the hands of the villain, if not reversed, will bring doom upon the entire world. Because, honestly, I've also heard that line spouted out quite a few times."

"Pft. And don't tell me all the thousands of ghosts in this world are some sort of...destined heroes. Isn't that the whole ghost deal? Unfinished business...violent death...magical means...pretty sure that's how the whole ghost thing works, innit? Hell, don't think most of them even need the magical means part."

The reaper huffed. "You'd probably be surprised to find that there are a fairly solid number of deaths attributed to such causes as old age, disease, high levels of cholesterol, and the like. I reaped one sod recently who had choked on a bit of bad fish. Anyhow, you certainly aren't helping your case with the tone you're copping."

The reaper threw a hand to the side and continued. "Yes, there may be those who do in fact have unfinished business. However, the fact often remains that the 'unfinished business' is typically not important enough to interrupt the natural cycle of life and death. There are those who have tried to offer that their business was important for the continued existence of... well, existence, but they mostly fell somewhat short in that regard."

Greg stars floating on towards Doma as he talks, moving slowly enough to suggest more of a walk-and-talk attitude than any sort of escape attempt.

"You know, you're not being very helpful yourself with all this evasion. Seems like all've you've got that in common, eh?"

"If I was wrong, then where do ghosts come from? And how would I qualify for that myself, hmm?"

"Now really isn't a good time, Justin. If it's an option, contact me while I'm awake. If not, you'll just have to wait for me to make my own way back."

So saying, Kelne stepped out of the dreamworld.

-------------------

"Well, you're being all... Nice and stuff. I think this is where the Boss would ask who you were and what you'd done with the real Not-Boss." Long association or not, there was no genuine suspicion in 32's voice, merely genuine puzzlement as to Justin's strange behaviour.

Wherein things happen

Unread postby Endesu » Sat Mar 24, 2007 1:50 am

The reaper waved these further interjections off, as well, but moved along with Greg back towards the city of Doma.

"Listen, let's simplify this discussion, because I'm certain the ramifications could go on for some time, and I honestly have other folk I need to get around to reaping. A few more of the guardsmen in Doma have already been dispatched, and I need to make sure they get where they're going... you want to live again, correct? To not be reaped? Tell me why, and try to justify its importance. We reapers are not entirely averse to the reasoning of those within the mortal span.

... and no fabrications."

***

Justin cursed, but he had no further way of reaching Kelne at the moment. He had arranged the correct positioning for contact and had arrived at the correct location, but he had failed to communicate his message. An important one, at that. He would have to consider what to do next...

It was at this moment of intricate considerations and calculations that Justin maintained his glare on 32, and pressed his response further. "Pardon me? I'm not aware of any particular moment in time in which I started 'acting nice'. I may not be the most exact match for Kelne, but I'm close enough to not engage in wanton acts of kindness."

It was with this that Justin began to engage in the act of landing the airship. They had arrived at a particular spot in the Forbidden Plains, for better or worse...

***

And so it was that Kelne would escape from the dream world...

... and return to the world of the waking. He would find that everything had been as he last left it; the Ikei had not managed to storm their way up here and destroy everything as of yet. 42, for the record, had stationed himself on a couch near the door leading downward... and had apparently dozed off at some point. Had he been awake, he likely would've cracked wise with Kelne the moment he had risen.

His wounds had benefited from this additional period of time; the treatment they had received from 93, in conjunction with the natural healing of the body, left him feeling sufficiently rejuvenated. With this status firmly in check, Kelne could once again approach the situation as he saw fit.

Slowing to a stop once more, he looks over the reaper, frowning.

"Hmph. Don't worry, I already know that much from the last one of you I talked to. Won't try it with you too."

Sighing, he closes his eyes, steeling himself for the coming truth. He reopens them, turning back towards the distant city of Doma.

"...She's trying to do better. Don't know what sorts o' messes this corporation of hers got her in back when, but whatever they were, she's trying t' make up for it.

"Then, on top of that, she decides to trust me t' help her out with all this. Something I'm trying to...live up to, that. Not something I'm all tha' used to, to be brutally honest.

"Not exactly 'defying death' material, I know, but that's why I want to stick around. She got dealt a bad hand in life, I haven't done much with mine. Haven't been a bad person, but haven't exactly been a good one either. She deserves a chance t' turn her life around; not some death-bed repentance nonsense either, a chance t' make up f'r what she did and live on. An' I think I deserve a chance t' not prove her wrong about me by leaving her in th' lurch now."

He resumes his leisurely trip towards Doma, speaking back to the assumedly-following scythe-wielding fellow as he drifts along the air.

"Go ahead an' try t' reap me, bu' I'll tell y' now, I'm goin' t' make i' as tough on you as I can."

"Oh, so you were using sarcasm." 32 nodded. Everything made perfect sense now. Questions resolved, he turned to watch the landing procedure.

--------------

Kelne decided to let 42 sleep for the time being. He intended to use the time to put together some form of disguise for his ally.

Fishing a coin from his pocket, he began working on the enchantment, using the one on his own ring as the base pattern. It was a rush job, which would allow the bearer to maintain the appearance of a gas masked Ikei for a few hours, but would then become useless.

It ought to suffice for their purposes.

The Reaper (who was indeed following at a steady clip) paused and honestly seemed to consider what Greg was saying.

A moment passed before the skeletal face turned to Greg and appeared to grimly smile. "From what you say, and from what I have seen, I have no reason to doubt you. I suppose I can let you remain on this coil in the form of a spirit, then, if that is what you truly wish. I cannot help you with resurrection, however. You'll have to find out how to accomplish that on your own."

That said, the Reaper waved a dismissive hand towards Greg and began to move on towards Doma, most likely with the intent of reaping those who had recently perished.

***

Justin regarded 32 with an unusual quirk of the eye - perhaps he wasn't certain what 32 was talking about now? 32 was a Minion, though, and Minions were by no means held to the actual topic at hand. No matter.

The ship landed just the same, leaving the crew free to depart and head out into the Forbidden Plains. The spot that had been selected was not pristine by any means - indeed, it was yet another spot of featureless, forsaken land that made up the entirety of this cursed region.

However, the spot was wide enough for the ship to land as well as for the entire group to disembark. Once everyone (that is to say, Minions, Justin, Stephen, and the Duck) had settled outside, Justin took the moment to deliver a brief dialog.

"Now then. I'm not sure if any of you Minions have any superstitious suspicions regarding this spot or not. It certainly has had a colorful history, and the dead may very well be lurking about. None of that can be denied, so if by some small chance one of you Minions fears these lands, dismiss them. We can certainly handle the sort who may roam about through here."

He paused before continuing. "Now, then. I shouldn't need to ask this question, but there's no real harm in putting it forward. Who has their shovel?"

***

Kelne's attempt did indeed provide results. 42 was, at the moment, still resting, unaware of what his charge had been doing.

It was at this moment that Kelne would begin to hear very faint growling emnating from just outside the door leading to the lower floors...

Hey, woah, he's been missing!

Unread postby Dragon Sage007 » Sat Mar 24, 2007 10:41 pm

And so it was that, hours later, covered in sap, cuts, mud, and other gooky stuff that he didn't want to even think about, Kumo emerged from the forest. The mudslide had been a surprise. The two hour detour to get back to anything resembling level ground had been, too. But the real kicker was when a certain lion had mistook him for dinner, forcing him to run like hell and climb a tree, all while wearing a white mage robe.

Kumo was -not- a happy camper.

...A bit shocked at the beings swift acquiesence, he stops, watching him float off towards the city himself. Before he's entirely out of skull-holeshot, Greg speaks up.

"...Thanks."

Mulling things over, he darts off himself, trying to spot either of those two floating clones he lost sight of before this entire incident.

Kumo would thusly emerge into a city thrown into panic; shadows were roaming the streets, and though guards appeared to be fighting back with sufficient number, the tide of the monsters from beyond simply was not stopping.

A very distinct odor of smoke, as well as a yellowish flickering in the distance, would indicate to Kumo that somehow or another a fire had formed on some unfortunate building.

Needless to say, quite a bit had happened.

Things only grew more complicated as yet another character emerged from the forest next to Kumo; what appeared to be a woman in a White Mage robe. Well, a dirtied White Mage robe; she may have also experienced the fun mudslide trip at some point.

"Damn. I saw Astrynax, but he managed to get away from me... I have no idea where he's went..." She mumbled out loud, not even seeming to notice the Moogle directly next to her.

***

The reaper did not even bother to respond; he apparently had things to do. Perhaps this had something to do with those souls he needed to reap?

Whatever the case, Greg was free to return to his search... only to find that in the time that had passed, the clones had disappeared entirely, leaving Greg with no lead to follow.

... except for the one that had headed back to Doma.

With little else to go on, Greg decides that's the only course of action available to him, and moves on, trailing after the reaper. And hopefully, the deceased guard he's heading to himself is indeed somehow involved in this situation.

Kumo had to rub his eyes as he looked out at the...well, if it weren't stopped soon, it might be a massacarre. Shadows are never a very good thing. And if no one was around to stop the fires, with all the crowded buildings in Doma...

And then he noticed the other white mage, quirking an eyebrow. "You know Astrynax? Wait, no, tell me later. Think you can stop a burning building, or at least help the victims inside?"

The reaper would eventually turn back to Greg in the midst of his trip to Doma. "Something you need? I already released you from your impending reaping. Do you wish me to go back on my word?..."

At this, the reaper appeared to ready his scythe, but he did nothing more forward than that.

***

The woman seemed to be taken by surprise by Kumo's sudden interjection; perhaps she hadn't even noticed the smallish Moogle standing there when she had emerged? "Er, possibly... I do have all of Astrynax's magic, so I could potentially do something about some of this. It wouldn't do to have Asty's city destroyed, or have any people be hurt... and I do have a few potions handy for such an occasion.

But it might be a bit much for just me. Given that the guards are busy at the moment, do you think you can at least help me with the distribution of some of these?" At this, the woman pulled out a set of the noted potions, which looked to be fairly fresh. "I'm not... terribly experienced in doing anything more than chasing a man, so I don't think I can handle stopping fire and healing people."

She looked at Kumo with a further glance, and Kumo could see that she was fairly picturesque - almost too pretty, in fact. The makeup she had on, in particular, would possibly cause the Moogle to speculate as to whether his current companion was a succubus or not...

Kumo really, really didn't care what species she was at the moment-at least, since she didn't sound anything like Nightbride-and lives were a bit more important than plot exposition just now. He began running towards the flames, most likely in the opposite direction of folks, trying to make sure that she was behind him.

"Flames first, people second! Unless they're going to die in ten seconds, they'll have to wait! I don't like it, but other lives are at stake too!"

He blinks, surprised by the short interruption, and stops himself as he speaks up.

The woman swiftly hurried after, deciding to go with what the moogle had suggested. It felt right, somehow... perhaps this was some of Astrynax's thought process leaking into her own? Whatever the case, she had made a decision, and she was sticking to it.

As the two went on, they would find themselves weaving through crowds of folk; most civilians had either taken refuge in their homes or in a safer spot. Guards were about and busy pressing back the Shadows, who seemed to continue coming. Unusually, Shadows moved about Kumo and the woman as well, but ultimately left them alone. Fortunate, yes, but quite possibly suspicious.

The two would finally arrive at the building in question; it appeared to be an older structure of some sort. One could almost vaguely read the word 'Library' on the front of the building, amidst the flames that had started. Several guards were about, but their efforts, involving the manual use of water, seemed to be having curiously little effect.

The woman frowned for a moment, but set herself in a position and readied to attack <s>the darkness</s> the flames that consumed the apparent library. Several guard mages had arrived on the spot, as well, and were similarly preparing to assault the flames.

The resulting magical attack (from the woman) would remind Kumo quite a bit of Astrynax; the woman took a similar stance, held out her hands in a similar way, and cast a spell much as the grumpy mage would've. This didn't matter at the moment, though; what mattered was that the woman had attacked the fire and indeed the entire building with an ice spell. The other mages followed suit with a water or ice spell, seeking to also kill the fire before it spread.

This effort quickly succeeded; the fires died down in a matter of moments. The woman seemed unsteady, and she appeared to be idly fingering her potions. Perhaps she wasn't used to casting spells like this? Whatever the case, Kumo would still recall that people may potentially be inside this building... potentially hurt people.

***

The reaper chuckled slightly. "Is that so? Very well. I see that you are able to put worrying about the woman aside, as well. I suppose you have everything under control despite the untimely death factor, then?"

Cackling just a bit, the reaper turned back and swiftly headed for Doma, cutting his descent short and arriving just around a few recently downed guards. Both had been rather heavily assaulted and torn at by a possible horde of Shadows, and little could really be done for them at this point.

As Greg arrived at the scene, he would find the Reaper calmly chatting with the two former Guards, who appeared to be fairly unhappy about the situation...

The reaper looked back at Greg as he arrived. "Is this what you wanted, then?"

As they float to Doma, before reaching the city, Greg starts to respond, glaring at him. He's cut off by the reaper's sudden departure, and frowning, he chases after the robed figure.

On arriving...that expression of annoyance and irritation is quickly replaced with one of fear and concern; he thought they'd be able to hold their own, even in their situation, but seeing this...

"...Was...was anyone else...did the shadows kill anyone else?"

"Certainly. This is a battle, so people die. Especially given the ridiculous numbers of Shadows that have arrived... there must be countless numbers of the things. Anyhow, it's not as if this battle is hopeless; the guards still do have a sufficient enough number to turn back this tide." So saying, the reaper gently began to guide the spirits of the fallen off the battlefield.

The reaper had yet to leave the scene, however, and regarded Greg with one last look. "What's the matter, then? Worried about something?"

Kelne let out a faint sigh. Clearly a few minutes' peace was too much to hope for. You'd think that the religious types downstairs would have at least let out a few screams or something before letting whatever it was waltz past them.

Muttering irritably to himself, Kelne headed over to wake 42, "No rest - or at least insufficient rest - for the wicked, 42. Sounds like we've got company."

----------------

There was a bright, cheerful chorus of affirmatives from the minions. As, no doubt, Justin had expected. Minions forgetting their shovels indeed...

Granted, it had likely been more than a few minutes' peace, but that wasn't the point. The growling continued as it was, never shifting in tone or frequency.

42 grumbled as Kelne moved to wake him up. "... 93, I'm not about to wear your prayer robes... piss off..."

***

Justin nodded, glad to reconfirm what was already obvious. "Very well then. As noted, I will need all of you Minions to dig a hole in that general area." With this, he pointed to a rather bland expanse not too far off. "Obviously, I'll need you all to work together, and to make the coming hole as big as possible - we'll need it for what lies ahead. Unless any of you have questions, you can get to work right away."

Justin turned, now, to his own set of Minions. "The lot of you who happen to have Shovel-Nets can go help them. Those who don't can wait for further instructions... your part will come later."

He turned, now, to Stephen. "And as for you..."

"... wait for something to happen that involves cutting. With my sword."

"Right, right."

"... not yet, I believe, but she may very well be. I'm not in the know concerning her current status."

Pausing, slightly relieved, Greg nods and darts off once more. He heads to the last place he saw her and the others; the doorway of the inn. Keeping an eye open as he moves, he watches for any signs of the spirit clones, or anything he can find that suggests they moved afterwards.

The doorway of the inn would reveal a comparatively peaceful scene; most of the shadows had apparently been cleared out of here by this point. The JD stood tall and strong; its magical reinforcements had apparently helped prevent any mid-battle damage.

There were no signs of Jikuro or the man she had approached, or those other people who had been sitting with Kyle previously. Most of the folk about were guards, now, insuring that everything was under control.

A look about would reveal no signs of Jikuro or trailing Shadows; indeed, there appeared to be no sign or hint as to where she had gone! If she was in trouble, there was no apparent way to tell...

The polite method having failed, Kelne prodded 42 with a boot. He resolved not to ask questions. A resolution he seemed to make with depressing regularity.

---------------------

And so the digging commenced, in that strangely organised, efficient manner so at odds with everything else the minions did. Oh the excitement.

42 swiftly awoke, bringing his sword to bear just inches away from Kelne.

"... oh, it's you." That said, he brought his blade back, keeping a wary eye on the tyrant all the same. He took a moment to shudder as if a cold wind had passed. "I just now had the most terrible nightmare... but... let's push that aside. What's going on, then? And have you accomplished anything during the brief time I've rested...?"

Oddly enough, at the moment, the growling from below had stopped...

Even the Minions would quickly note that there was something unusual about this hole - or, rather, what they were digging the hole towards. A bizarre sort of energy began to filter up through the air as soon as the ground had been broken with both shovels and shovel-nets.

The deeper the minions dug, the stronger the energy would be felt - would they feel it to be something out of the ordinary?

Kumo was keeping his head in this matter, at least-anything for a good distraction. He turned to one of the closer magi and asked, "Do you know if there are any people in the building, or should we leave it for now to deal with these...shadows? I'm a White Mage and an elementalist, so I can be of some help..."

The mage turned to the moogle and nodded. "We do have reason to believe that there may be a few people still in the building - according to local sources, the owner of this building is still in there, and there may be a few patrons yet inside as well. If you wish to help, sir, that is your choice, though we do thank you for any assistance you may be able to provide."

The mage waved to the others assembled there, and for the most part, they dissembled from the scene thereafter, most likely to deal with the situation elsewhere in the city. All counted, there was the mage in question, a single guardsman, Inana, and Kumo left at the spot.

The mage nodded and began to lead the way towards the now chilled building. "Let's go, then, and hope for the best for the civilians inside..."

Inana seemed to hesitate, still idly fingering the same potions. "I... I don't know..." Despite her own show of magical prowess from before, she still seemed to believe herself a bit unable to keep up with this sort of activity.

Kumo shook his head a bit, looking at the assembled mages...and at the two of them. A kid and someone with no self-confidence. Oh goody.

"Neither do I. But I'd say we go in, help who we can before they die of burn wounds or, worse, the building collapsing, and then go see what we can do to help the rest of the city. The Guard is tough-they can hold on for at least a while. It's not like they're hinging on us to save them or anything. But for now, I'm going in there, and I'd like you to come with me. I've got questions that need answering after things calm down."

With that oh-so-lovely pep talk, Kumo began to walk inside, depending on his small size to not shake anything too badly.

"Oh... very well." Inana huffed slightly but followed along all the same - thus the compact group of 4 entered the building.

As soon as they entered the building, they would hear the sound of screams emnating from the floor just above a nearby staircase... and just as soon as that had occurred, a horde of Shadows seemed to materialize within the very confines of this first floor of the library, wasting no time in closing in on the group.

The guard and the mage moved in quickly to halt the flow, and managed to hold them off just enough to prevent them from overrunning the spot.

"You two! You seem competent enough!" The mage shouted back, keeping his eyes on the flood of Shadows just ahead. "Go check upstairs, and do it quickly! We'll hold back this group."

Kumo started to yell out that he'd stay...but then realized that others might be facing the same thing. Others that -weren't- combat trained. So he shut his mouth, nodded, and rushed towards the staircase as fast as he could.

Inana tried to respond that she didn't know and/or wasn't sure - but she figured she'd stay the course for now, regardless of the strong feelings of hestiation she was experiencing at the moment.

The duo made their way quickly up to the staircase to find themselves in yet another wing of the library-type structure... however, much of the wing had been laid to waste. Several shelves had been knocked over and/or otherwise toppled to make everything something of a terrible mess. The less said about the books the better, which varied between "torn" to "shredded".

An old man of sorts and a young girl were making their way through the area, running from what appeared to be a group of five or six shadows in hot pursuit.

Inana gasped slightly, and slowly began to generate a spell of some sort. "... I... I guess we'll have to do something!"
